August 11, 2017: Typing Assignment #6

Before I get into this assignment, I want to point out that Mr. Van Cleave has a YouTube channel in which he goes over all the submissions by presenting a slideshow of them (which allows you to read each one), then discusses each of them individually.

The sixth Typing Assignment from Joe Van Cleave’s blog is the following:

We all have someone in our lives who represents a story waiting to be told. That story could be uplifting, or not. But that’s the way true-to-life stories are; not all fairy tales and happily-ever-after and Prince (or Princess) Charming. But a story, waiting to be told, as a typed, one-page composition. It’s your story, to share with others.

For this assignment, I took my healed wrist to the 1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe, and tried to fit a single page in about Erma Henderson.  Though there is a lot to her story, and a lot of it has been shared, I chose to revisit her for this assignment because August 20, 2017 would have been her 100th birthday.

One of the take-aways from this assignment is that I need to allow myself a little more time to either hand-write or rough draft it on the typewriter and re-type.  One of the aesthetics of using a typewriter is the human error component of mistypes, misspellings, and rawness of thought.  If I’m going to continue this and publish them here, I need to consider providing cleaner copy.

July 28, 2017: Typing Assignment #5

Still hampered by the splint, I used my 1961 Smith Corona Coronet Automatic, an electric typewriter, again for Typing Assignment #5 at Joe Van Cleave’s blog.

This assignment “is to work with that worst of all opening lines to a story, “It was a dark and stormy night.”

This line has been panned for decades by critics and cognoscenti alike; but are we afraid? No! Instead, we see it as a challenge. After all, we’re already writing on manual typewriters. Typewriters, I tell ‘ya! So a little more salt in the wound shouldn’t be any trouble.

Start your one-page piece with that classic line, and see where the Muse takes you. Make it fiction; or make it nonfiction, if you have a personal tale, set in a dark, stormy eve, worth telling. Perhaps there’s a family story or legend you’d like to try your hand at. Make it poetry, make it prose, you get to choose.

This is my contribution.

July 16, 2017: Typing Assignment #4

Typing Assignment #4 from Joe Van Cleave’s Blog was difficult this week.  An acute fracture in a bone in my wrist, which occurred at a soccer game on Tuesday, has been making every form of typing a challenge.  Furthermore, the assignment itself required some thought and imagination.  The past seven days busy with work and soccer, left little time for thought on this project.  But with the deadline near, I put this together.

The assignment “is to write about that old pangram: The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. You are free to use this phrase as a jumping-off point for wherever the create muse leads. Write from the perspective of the fox, or the dog, or the dog’s owner. Tell us the backstory, or what happens after. Is there animosity between the fox and dog, or are they friends? Why is the dog considered lazy – did he get a false reputation? You get to decide – it’s your story.”

Well, I took this in an entirely different direction.  Sort of like how my week went.  I used my 1961 Smith Corona Coronet Automatic, an electric typewriter which would be easier for my injured left hand, and, well, all I can say is that a quick brown fox did jump over a lazy dog.  The rest I’ll leave for you to decide.

July 8, 2017: Typing Assignment #3

Today I completed Typing Assignment #3 for Joe Van Cleave’s blog.  These have been fun, both for content and to develop a habit for using the typewriter more often for writing, not just addressing envelopes.

Typing Assignment #3 is “to write a one-pager about youthful hang-outs. Write about some place you liked to spend time at when young, and perhaps a bit about the people you hung with and maybe even some special circumstance or story that transpired.”

Using my 1951 Royal Quiet De Luxe, (because the typeface is smaller and I can fit more words to the page), here is my submission titled “Leave the Driving to Us.”

July 2, 2017: Typing Assignment #2

After posting Typing Assignment #1, I watched the video about Assignment #2, and realized that the deadline for it was today.  After watching the video and visiting Joe Van Cleave’s Blog page “Typing Assignment #2,” it was back to work.

The assignment is to “write a one-page essay on what you find unique and/or valuable about using typewriters as writing tools.”  For this, I hammered out a rough draft on the Royal Quiet De Luxe, then polished it on the Olivetti Lettera 22.  Below is my submission.

July 2, 2017: Typing Assignment #1

A couple weeks ago, I received an email from David Wells, creator of the Vermont Vintage Typewriter website, with his latest article.  In it, he shared his submission to Joe Van Cleave’s “Typing Assignment.”  Last week, another email arrived, with David’s submission to the second assignment.  I kept the emails as new, wanting to refer back to them and consider this Typing Assignment project.

Today was the day.  I didn’t read David’s submissions, not wanting to be influenced by them.  Instead, I went directly to Joe Van Cleave’s blog.  I found the article and video describing the purpose of this project.

Okay.  Sounds good.  Though I’ve never been a writer who has been inspired by writing prompts, I have been looking for a way to give my typewriters more use.  Their function lately has been to address envelopes.

This is Typing Assignment #1

Well, too late to include it on his website, I decided to do this just to get started on this project.  My hope is that I’ll be timely for Assignment #3.

Here’s my response to this first Typing Assignment.

Attending a Detroit City FC Match at Keyworth Stadium

You’ve seen us on the local news.

You’ve read about us in the local newspapers.

You’ve heard about us from friends, family, or co-workers who have attended our games.

But you still haven’t been to a Detroit City Football Club match?

Shame on you.

I know.  From the outside, we can be intimidating.  Smoke.  F-bombs.  Loudly singing from Minute One to Minute Ninety.  Unapologetic arrogance.

[image error] [image error] [image error]

But you won’t find a more entertaining and fun sporting event, with the greatest people, anywhere.

This guide is intended to help you enjoy the full experience of a Detroit City FC match, from within the comfort and camaraderie of the Northern Guard Supporters.

A Little Detroit City FC History

Detroit City FC began in 2012, playing matches at Cass Tech Stadium on the campus of Cass Tech High School in Detroit.  The history of the Cass Tech experience can be found HERE.   In 2015, the fan base outgrew the high school facility and had to find a larger stage.  In September, the team announced that it put in a bid to renovate Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck.  After gaining approval from the Hamtramck School Board, team ownership called out to the supporters.

October 29, 2015, at the Fowling Warehouse in Hamtramck, Detroit City FC pitched their investment proposal.  The financial need to rehabilitate the eighty-year-old Keyworth Stadium was $750,000.  Supporters were asked to make an individual investment through a crowdfunding source – as low as $250, as high as $10,000 – under the Michigan Invests Locally Exemption Act.  The investor would then be repaid with interest over time from the team’s revenues.  The team set $400,000 as the goal that, once met, would free the funds early and allow the renovation work to begin.

On February 15, 2016, the closing date to invest, Detroit City FC raised $725,500 from 492 investors.

The renovation began, and there were dates when supporters could volunteer their time and sweat in getting the stadium in shape.  By its inaugural match on May 20, 2016, the first phase of the renovation was complete.  All but two sections on the Supporters’ side could be completed, giving a seating capacity of about 7,000.

[image error] [image error] [image error] [image error]

On that opening night of May 20, 2016, the stadium swelled at 7,410 fans.

Getting In

To get in, you need a ticket.  Detroit City FC season tickets are the best bang for your buck in Detroit sporting events.  In 2015 at Cass, it was a must.  However, with the increased capacity, individual game tickets can be purchased online or at the stadium.

Pre-Game

Of course, you’re going to want to get there early.  And by early, a good ninety minutes before game time.  The place to meet is the Fowling Warehouse.

Fowling is a sport which combines (American) football and bowling.  It’s the place to hang out, have a few pops (or Detroit City FC-local brews).

The Northern Guard Supporters have a table outside where you can purchase all the great Northern Guard swag, the proceeds from which supports the smoke expelled.  On average, over 130 sticks of smoke are ignited during a match.

It should be noted, the Fowling Warehouse does not serve food.  However, there are high-quality food trucks at the stadium to satisfy your palate.

The March

At an hour before game-time, the Guard gathers outside of Fowling Warehouse for the pre-match speech.

From there, we gather on Conat Road, blocked from traffic by the Hamtramck Police Department.

(There is a narrow stairway for those of us who’d rather not scale down the hill.)

And from here, the march begins.

Once Inside Keyworth

Grab some food at the food trucks.  Grab a beverage to keep hydrated.  Grab some Detroit City FC souvenirs.

There are two sides of the stadium.  The Family-Friendly side and the Supporters Section.

On the Family-Friendly side, you can enjoy the experience without much effort.  Don’t go too far down the grandstand.  There is a section dedicated to the opposing team’s supporters.  Their numbers are generally small, though.

And just because it is the Family-Friendly side, it doesn’t mean it’s without supporters and antics.

The other option is the Supporters Section.

The sign sums things up.  But here are the details.

The chanting and singing run the entire ninety minutes of match play.  The words to the songs and chants can be found at the Northern Guard Supporters’ table in the form of “Hell’s Hymnal.”  Or you can download it from the Northern Guard Supporters’ website.

The important people to follow for songs are the capos.  They stand at the front of each section, facing the supporters.  Follow their lead, for that is how the entire section stays together, creating an imposing, single voice in support of our players and of intimidation to the opponents.

The famous Tetris song is performed twice – once in each half.  Be prepared to be drawn into the lines, arms over shoulders, for what creates an awesome display for those over on the Family-Friendly side.

[image error] [image error] [image error]

If you have health issues with smoke, this is not the side you want to be on.  Furthermore DO NOT BRING YOUR OWN SMOKE TO THE MATCH!  The Northern Guard has assigned supporters in charge of smoke and when it is released.  Smoke is usually released at the opening kickoff…

after a Detroit City FC goal is scored…

and continuously from the 85th minute until the final whistle.

So there you have it.  An evening at a Detroit City FC match can be the most fun you’ll have at a sporting event in Detroit.  We look forward to having you join our family.
