Interview With The Amazing Sara Raasch
I just finished the last book in the Snow Like Ashes series, Frost Like Night. My feels are all over the place! AHHHHHH!!! I loved this series so much!
Snow Like Ashes series follows 16-year-old
Meira, a headstrong refugee of Winter, who wants nothing more than to
fight to take her kingdom back. She tends to go off half cocked into action. She definitely reacts emotionally in situations.
She trains alongside the future King of Winter, Mather. He is believed to be the heir. He’s also her closest friend in the world. ::Oooooo!! wink wink::
And Sir, he’s in charge. He trains them. He makes the decisions. And he looks out for everyone in their refugee group as best he can.
The series has these beautifully written eight nations (Seasons and Rhythms) that the characters travel to on their course to save their own kingdom and these emotionally complex characters they encounter along the way that you just want to keep reading about. Crazy twists and secrets and WOH!!
I loved Meira so much because even as she acted emotionally, she was so brave, loyal, and determined. So determined. And watching her grow and deal with the surprise relation of who she really is throughout the three books was awesome!
Frost Like Night has big battles, unexpected turns, incredibly swoony moments, and a war to end all wars.
I am so lucky that Sara agreed to answer some of my burning questions I had after I finished the last page of that incredible book!
Check out my interview with her!
1) What an amazing series! I loved every minute of it and will definitely miss Meira and the Seasons and Rhythms! How are you feeling with this being the last book?
Relieved! Sad! Excited! Bittersweet! It’s a crazy mix of emotions, but that’s pretty much publishing in general. Just nonstop emotions! All! The! Time!
2) There were some terrible losses on Meira’s journey to save the world. Was there anyone that hurt the worst to you?
*SPOILERS*
The scene that always made me tear up SO MUCH (mostly because I listened to Krista Siegfrids’ “Can You See Me” while writing it and OMG the FEELS: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7Z6nQNJPiA) was definitely Sir’s death scene. It was the culmination of so many threads (Meira’s father-esque plot with him, Mather’s similar thread, Hannah, the magic, etc) that it was just constantly ripe with emotion. Ugh, still hurts!!
3) In your acknowledgements, you said you had a character named after your friend, Melinda, that didn’t make it into the book. If she had made it into the book, what kingdom would we have met her in? Would she had dodged the Decay?
Ha! She’ll love that you asked about this :)
Melinda is my sister, and she isn’t too much of a reader (gasp! I know!). So I knew the only way I had any hope of getting her to read my books was to hide her in there somewhere – so I named a side character after her, Queen Melinda Haskar of Cordell, Theron’s mother. It’s important to note that she’s his *deceased* mother, and my sister takes great pride in now telling everyone that she’s the dead queen of Cordell.
4) The Blizzard fandom is such a cool fandom to belong to! What is some of your favorite fan mail you’ve received from fans?
Oh where to even start!! I’ve gotten the most AMAZING things – all because the Winterians are the best fandom to belong to, in my opinion ;D I’ve gotten coasters painted with the map of Primoria, hand-made mugs, fan art GALORE (people are so. freaking. TALENTED!) – but I think my favorite thing has to be a compilation album of sorts that one of the FROST LIKE NIGHT War Council members gave me – it’s a whole book of quotes from fans saying how much they love the series. She even got a note from my mom! It’s so amazing!!
5) You have a new series you are working on! Yay! Can you tell us any juicy details about it? Or is it all really hush hush?
I am in LOOOVVVEEE with my next series!! It’s a YA pirate fantasy. I describe it as the Golden Age of Piracy meets the Spanish Inquisition with botanical river magic. I can tell you more about the three POVs – one is a girl, Lu, who lives on the island of Grace Loray (where said botanical river magic is); another is a stream raider (think “pirate”) who harvests and illegally sells magic, named Vex (my young Jack Sparrow inspired character!); the last is from the country that once owned Grace Loray as a colony, Ben, the crown prince of Argrid (a Spain-esque country with a very theocratical government). Despite what it may look like, it is *not* a love triangle! Ben is the product of my deep obsession with CS Pacat’s Captive Prince trilogy – if you haven’t read that series yet, omg, GO READ IT NOW!
Thank you so much for having me!!

If a Sara makes macarons, she’s going to have extra filling frosting.
So she’ll make some cupcakes to go under the frosting.
But she’ll run out of extra frosting halfway through the cupcakes.
So she’ll make more frosting.
And have some left over.
So she’ll make macarons.
