The Lore of Hegira: Episode 3, Slumfairy

The Borja gave them a pair of personal fliers. The ancient models, low on fuel, wouldn’t get Bex and Sumida very far. Still, they’d fly the fleeing pair up through a shaft in the honeycombed outer walls of the Borja’s territory. From there, they’d be able to access the next residential level. Maybe even get a chance to rest.

Bex was grateful for the convenience but it didn't lessen her exasperation at Sumida.

"You've been telling everyone from the Forii colony, the Borja’s, not to fight the Merch...

New Substack Publication Schedule

For the sake of adopting a more structured approach to publishing to Strange Stories Live Here, I’ve come up with a weekly posting schedule based on article/post type. Starting 07/31/2023, Strange Stories Live Here will be updated five times weekly (Mondays - Fridays).

The Lore of Hegira: Episode 2, Slumfairy

Back plastered to the wall, Sumida valiantly battled the urge to hurl.

"Run?" Her head reared up at Winny’s frantic words. "Now?"

A loud rumbling started, making the walls shudder. The noise became louder and louder as whatever was coming got closer. Winny hurriedly strapped on a couple of holsters, and snatched up her backpack stuffed with ammunition, medicine, and food rations. The rumbling suddenly stopped. A high-pitched, mechanical wail pierced the sudden silence.

Sumida balked. “Is that a jug...

My First Stab at Writing Horror

I set out to write my very first piece of horror fiction story circa 2012, just in time for Halloween.

Inspiration for the story came from that episode of The X-Files in which Mulder and Scully encounter some red-eyed creature that might have been once one of the Conquistadors who came to Florida with Ponce de Leon in search of the Fountain of Youth.

In the last scene of that episode, as Scully exits her hotel room, the last thing you see is that red-eyed creature watching her from under her bed....

Is it Possible to Give Away Paid Subscriptions on Substack?

There are a couple of people who I want to grant free access to my Paid Subscriber only content. Does anyone know if there’s a way to do that?

Owning Your Craft

The online writing community is saturated with self-labeled experts shilling a myriad of theories about the DOs and DON’Ts of what it takes to be or become a successful, published author.

I’m sure you’ve heard or seen it.

How many times has it been said that unless one writes x-thousand words every single day, one has no chance of truly succeeding as a writer?

There seems to be no short supply of soothsayers proclaiming that you should write, write, write till you’ve either churned out some sembla...

The Lore of Hegira: Episode 1, Slumfairy

Severed heads weren't commonplace, even in one of the crime-ridden shantytowns sprawled along the rims of Hegira's surface canals.

Winny frowned, her gut churning as Bex plunked a dripping, bagged thing down on her counter.

Just as Winny got to wondering whether her human foster-sister had finally gone far enough 'round the bend to forget that a headhunter's job wasn't supposed to be taken quite so literally, there was a choked oomph! which suggested that something was, impossibly, still alive in ...
