Happenings from the Writing Cave in June

I love writing fiction. It allows me to enter a world where I can stretch my imagination beyond any limits. But most importantly, I love the challenge to create, what I’d like to think, are ingenious plots into plausible and possible scenarios.

However, my latest challenge is to try and maneuver my real-life plot into a positive outcome.  Joe is happily back on his feet and feisty as ever after his “underwater exploration.” But the incident gave us pause as we reflected on the possibility of simplifying our lives. That notion, however, was quickly erased. Much too easy. So, in the midst of working on the next book in the Max Ford series, focused on the Climatized movie, and looking for a TV streaming outlet for Simon Hall, we’ve decided to embark on a major remodel of our home…I kiddingly refer to it as my insane asylum. This will start during the height of high construction costs, scarcity of building materials, and lack of available contractors. And to make things even more interesting, we need to find temporary housing for five months during the high season in Florida. Who said life should be easy? But not to be glib, we are fortunate to be able to have the choices, and I wake up each morning reminding Joe, “This is going to be fun!” Stay tuned for my thoughts when we get started on construction. That is when life may become more interesting than fiction. And feel free to remind me at any time that “it’s going to be fun!”

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN MAY

As I said before…I’m not the greatest with timely newsletters, but so far I’m batting a thousand! Two months in a row. Most important, I hope you enjoyed hearing about my activities in and out of the cave and last month was no exception!

My darling husband, Joe, often provides tidbits, stunts, and experiences that I sneak in between the pages of my novel. You’ll even find out things about him hidden in License plate numbers and secret codes. Last month, the day before his birthday, the code became 911. Wait, there is a happy ending! But that was after he wrestled with two Styrofoam dumbbells in the swimming pool, and as he puts it, the human dumbbell lost, having aspirated salt water into his lungs. After a few days in ICU…yes, on his birthday, he’s back home and getting stronger every day. Actually, he’s almost better than ever! So, here’s another overused cliché that is more than appropriate…”You can’t keep a good man down!”

And according to Joe, his best medicine, was seeing each book in the Simon Hall Political Thriller series hit Amazon’s Kindle Bestseller List during our April Free Giveaway Promotion.

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN APRIL

For those loyal followers and fans, you know I’m not great with timely newsletters, but I have a ton of excuses that I hope you will find understandable…even some enjoyable! Naturally, the CCP virus nixed book presentations, book signings, and the like for a while, but that doesn’t mean I have been idle.

Many of you are aware that I recently re-released the “Simon Hall Political Thriller” series with new covers and some minor editing.  Having written my first series between the years 2011 and 2014,  I was amazed as I went through the editing process that the factual components of the plotlines are reminiscent of the headlines today! “Psychic”…you decide.

Simon’s been busy too, winning the #1 Bestseller on Amazon for Brotherhood Beyond the Yard…and don’t miss the action as each successive book ups the game dramatically! Wondering what Max has been up to? 

She’s been struggling through Covid, dealing with major life decisions, caught up in assassination attempts, and battling the Consortium. All will be revealed in the explosive conclusion to the “Max Ford Mystery” series. Stay tuned for the release of The Infiltrator’s Shadow in the Fall.

DEMASKING AMERICA

A Balancing Act between our Health and the Economy

I recently listened to a favorite radio talk show Viewpoint This Sunday on the America Out Loud platform. The topic of discussion was about wearing facemasks. The consensus appeared to be that it was unwarranted, unhealthy, and unnecessary. The dialogue between the Radio Host, Malcolm, and his guest speakers, focused particularly on their individual rights. They also shared a frustration at the glances and visual scorns they received when not wearing a facemask in public areas.

The next day I read an article about a birthday party in Pasadena, California. During the shelter-at-home orders, a large group of extended family members and close friends got together for a celebration. They did not social distance. They did not wear a facemask. Five partygoers tested positive, and through contact tracing officials discovered many more in attendance had become ill.

All of this led me to think about my rights and responsibilities to society. As our country slowly reopens, I suspect it will function a bit differently, for a while at least. But we remain a thriving society based on its foundation of freedom and the principles it is built upon. I decided to look up the textbook definition of society and it reads like this:

a group of individuals involved in persistent social interaction, or a large social group sharing the same spatial or social territory, typically subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations.

Two things caught my attention: large social group sharing and political authority. Oliver Wendell Holmes instantly came to mind with his famous quote, “that no free speech safeguard would cover someone falsely shouting fire in a theater and causing a panic.” The U.S. Supreme Court agreed and upheld the illegality of the use of dangerous speech.

Here’s my takeaway: For us to function in a free society we must consider the language we use to express our ideas and beliefs. Equally important, our actions must not bring harm to our fellow citizens.

I’ve watched many of the protests around the country with people fighting for their businesses to reopen and jobs to come back; acts which underscore one of our most treasured freedoms. But I’m taken aback by the number of people in the crowds not wearing facemasks or social distancing. The same parameters that have been suggested by our federal government and imposed by state governments, at varying degrees around the country. I also believe it is equally just for a business owners to demand the same. Ultimately, it’s our choice to comply or not but at the same time consider the rights of other.

I live in Florida and needless to say, it’s a hotspot. As of this writing, 41,923 confirmed cases and 1,779 deaths have been reported. Each day I check for new cases and deaths, specific to my county. To date, we have 435 confirmed cases, 57 deaths and 4 new deaths reported as of yesterday. Sixty-one too many.

I realize in every State, and at the county level, they have different demographics and statistics, which takes me back to my original premise: we all have the personal freedom of choice to decide how and when we move forward. And where you live specifically, may determine your choices. If there is any blame to be placed at the federal level, it is the one-size-fits-all strategy…but I digress.

In the final analysis, when I feel like I’m coming down with a cold or worse yet, the flu, I stay away from my husband’s face. Simply because I don’t want to make him sick. If I came in contact with the invisible monster, the Covid-19 virus, the one with no warning signs, I could seriously infect the ones I love—and the ones I don’t even know. I might end up asymptomatic or end up with a horrible flu-like illness. But if I unknowingly infected my husband—it could be devastating.

So, I wear my mask because it’s not worth the risk. And I will do so until I feel it’s safe. Also, I don’t shout fire in the theatre.

MAINTAINING OUR HUMANITY

To many it’s obvious that I haven’t written a blog for some time, and while and I could offer many excuses, they would pale into insignificance during the current state-of-affairs. But something has been churning in my mind and it’s time to spill the words onto cyber-paper.

Joe, my husband and I, while self-sequestered in our home, have reflected upon how incredibly fortunate we are, not only to be able to work out of our home, that our love is strong enough to spend 24/7 together without issue…no pots and pans flying…actually, there’s been a lot of ordering in. But throughout this ordeal, we truly recognize how blessed we are. At the same time, our hearts go out to those facing extreme difficulties; loss of jobs, fears of losing homes and businesses, and most important, worries of themselves or their loved ones being afflicted by this invisible monster, the COVID-19 coronavirus.

Joe, who is quite a few years older me and admittedly much wiser, grew-up during The Great Depression. I would often tease him about his depression-era mentality, being extremely frugal and unabashedly practical. So here we are, reserving toilet paper until we both realized how foolish it seemed. There are so many more important things in life…okay, wine is one of them!

Seriously, this is a horrific time in our country and around the globe. It also presents a great opportunity to refocus on what really matters. In a sense, we have captured the esprit de corps of a depression-era mentality as we find ourselves readjusting our mindset. Hopefully, we’ve also developed a greater a sense of responsibility, not just responsibility for one’s family and those we love and protect, but responsibility for our neighbors, and responsibility to our country. Rooted in our American ingenuity, we’ve seen entrepreneurship rise to the heights of creativity one could only imagine. Businesses reinventing themselves with restaurants becoming grocery stores and grocery stores becoming delivery services, factories across the country retooling to produce personal protection products for our first responders and major corporations partnering with unlikely sources; Ford Motor Company and General Electric Healthcare Systems, to name one. And politicians from both sides of the aisle working in concert as implausible bedfellows. Unprecedented cooperation and humanity in a time of crisis. And let’s not forget Zoom Happy Hours…America at her best!

The novel coronavirus crisis will end and hopefully, we will be able to give a huge sigh of relief that the death toll was not as bad as originally forecast. But what’s next? Surely, the statisticians will revise their actuary tables and try to describe where they went wrong. The economists will move full throttle with market predictions in trying to determine how quickly our economy will rebound. Surely, the bleachers will be filled with armchair quarterbacks in the social, economic and political stadiums. Media Outlets will start rolling out the soundbites. Fingers will wag. And politicians will once again stand upon their soapboxes and spend taxpayer dollars at will. I guess that means life will return to normal. I hope I’m wrong.

In the final analysis, the move forward could be quite simple; continue to behave as though we are still weathering a crisis. As individual citizens, afforded enormous rights and freedoms, let’s stop the vitriol, stop expecting or demanding others to do for us what we can do for ourselves, continue to work hard, take care of our family and neighbors. Don’t lose the humanity we’ve just gained. Help keep America Great, Safe, and Kind!
