HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN JANUARY
Happy Belated New Year!…And what a year it has been thus far…and we are only in the second week. Perhaps, it is because 2022 and 2023 seem to have morphed into one of Construction, Deconstruction and Reconstruction for Joe and me.

In preparation for the chaos, we brilliantly decided to take a six-week cruise in July on Oceania’s Insignia. The time away gave us time to deconstruct from our chaotic life, until Joe and I got covid. Actually, I got covid and gave it to him. I thought something was awry when suddenly every other treadmill was blocked off for social distancing. And I was the unfortunate recipient of the whole gamut of symptoms, including a severe case of strep throat. Typical of my husband, he escaped with a low-grade fever. Fortunately for both of us, we managed to survive our ten-day quarantine, in our penthouse suite with twenty-four-hour butler service…timing is everything!
Back to construction. We returned to our home and spent the week preparing for our temporary move to a condominium, preparing for the movers to pack our furnishings, and prepare to drastically upset our lives for a year! Then as the final piece of luggage was unpacked at the condo and we finally settled in, there was a mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Ian. Now with two homes unavailable, we ended up staying with dear friends the day the storm brewed and the night while it hurled its 155 mph winds. They lost power at 1pm in the afternoon and we all camped out with candlelight and an abundance of wine for the night. All in all, each of the homes was relatively unscathed.
Now for reconstruction. Two weeks before Christmas when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse, Joe, my darling husband, took a fall and fractured his hip. It was a freak accident, but heartbreaking. He had worked so hard to regain his balance after his brain surgery a year and a half ago, only to find himself back at the Rehabilitation Center. Fortunately, he did not have to undergo a joint replacement, but he did have to have surgery to place a metal rod through his hip to stabilize the fracture. But he was able to come home on New Year’s Eve.
It was a crazy year on both a personal and professional level, as the books and movie seemed to go through the same construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction.

2022 was chaotic to say the least and I expect this year to be more of the same. But given all the wonderful things in my life, minus a few mishaps, Joe and I are blessed to have each other, to have our health, and to have dear family and friends we cherish. We recognize that others are less fortunate and have faced more difficult times. But for all of you we wish much happiness, good health, and a safe and prosperous 2023!
Please remember, all reviews are more than welcome!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN DECEMBER
Tis the Season to be Jolly…Although, I did spot Christmas trees and Halloween costumes at Costco one day in September. And as our construction project slowly progresses, the landscaping is now gone; the roof tiles are now gone…

…and the day set aside to reflect on all we should be thankful for has now gone as well.
The holiday season has officially begun! But as quick as the turkey was devoured, so will the Christmas tree and the holiday cheer as we round the corner of another year, making resolutions we know we will never keep.
I know I’m reflecting on the year a tad early, but so much has transpired in my life, in my friends and families’ lives, in our country, and in the world. As with 2019, 2020, 2021, and this year so much uncertainty still hangs in the balance. It becomes challenging to weed through all that has transpired, much of what most people find difficult to even understand. Sometimes it feels like the world is upside down, like the World Cup where the mostly likely teams to win…lose…and vice versa.
Everyone knows I’m a political junkie and as Pericles said, and I believe, “Just because you do not take an interest in politics doesn’t mean politics won’t take an interest in you.”
So, whether it is:
a pandemic genetically engineered in China,
critical race theories,
defunding the police outcries,
progressive prosecutions,
open borders flooding the country with millions of unidentified immigrants and criminals,
fentanyl drug overdoses,
election fraud,
parental protests,
gender identity indoctrination of children,
low unemployment coupled with lack of participation in the workforce,
the rise in gas prices coupled with the depletion of our petroleum reserve,
the increase in food costs and depletion in supply chains,
the Green New Deal,
the Mid-East turmoil bubbling up again,
declining military enrollment,
the Ukrainian war,
China’s threats towards Taiwan,
Iranian threats to the U.S.
and the expansion of nuclear weapons in China, Iran, and Korea…
…the list continues. But one thing connects them all…POLITICS!
Sorry to sound like a Bah Humbug, but I don’t see a shift in the metrics soon, but oftentimes reality is a welcomed wake-up call for change! Suddenly, The Byrds song from the 60’s came to mind…remember Turn Turn Turn.
To everything (turn, turn, turn)There is a season (turn, turn, turn)
And a time to every purpose, under heaven
And with every New Year comes new hopes and new dreams! On a positive note, more young people, more parents, and more small businesses are becoming more engaged in the politics that affect their lives. We don’t have to agree, we just need to be aware, especially when you exercise the privilege of voting.
Now, for some Shameless Promo!
It’s time to think about stocking stuffers…
I have a few ideas!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN NOVEMBER
Disruption or Destruction…it’s hard to tell which is worse…our remodel or the political ads for the upcoming mid-term elections. On our side of the aisle the scaffolding is in place and the roof is about to come off. No, we are not tearing it down, we are building it up, adding a new floor. So, prepare yourself to be inundated with construction photos for the next several months.
The good news is that all the flooring, lighting fixtures, sinks, faucets and yes, toilets have been selected. Now, I’m eager to get back to Max and The Infiltrator’s Shadow.
And while the new view is promising, the view from the “political” swamp is well…still swampy. But there is promise of hope depending on how you choose to vote, in what purports to be an historic election.
In 1981 William Casey, the then CIA Director said, “We’ll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”
As depressing as that may sound, it is a warning call and as prevalent today as it was then. Let’s hope we don’t hear repeated calls of election fraud. Be vigilant, vote honestly, and help to restore the integrity of our democracy. If you want to understand more of how we got to this place you may find Redemption: The Aftermath an interesting read.
Disruption or Destruction? I’m voting on a minor disruption in both cases. Please remember, all reviews are more than welcome!
That’s a wrap…I hope you will look forward to more Happenings from the Writing Cave!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN OCTOBER
Cruising home, heading into the hurricane season and the midterm elections, both equally destructive, it’s sad to see how quickly tragedies become politicized, and therein lies the tragedy.
Just as many Floridians began to laud the non-existent hurricane season, Hurricane Ian brought on its fury and pummeled the U.S. barring down particularly hard on Florida and the Carolinas leaving destruction in its wake.
According to NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, “Hurricanes are powerhouse weather events that suck heat from tropical waters to fuel their fury. These violent storms form over the ocean, often beginning as a tropical wave—a low-pressure area that moves through the moisture-rich tropics, possibly enhancing shower and thunderstorm activity.”
So, Hurricane Ian did what hurricanes do: they intensify very quickly. Just as quickly, as the untold damage and human suffering began to surface, so did the opportunity to push the Green New Deal, pointing to climate change as the real culprit.
However, words matter. In the ’70s, the first real battle cry was Anthropogenic Global Warming, in layman’s terms, man-made, but it became a hard sell politically over time. Then through some semantic hocus-pocus, this “man-made destruction” was changed to Climate Change, something that couldn’t be denied. Still, the mantra was that global warming caused the climate to change. And here we are today, where everything is conveniently blamed on Climate Change…meaning you are to blame…and at a very high cost.
If you’d like to read more about the genesis of climate change, follow the money, follow the science, its politicization, and what really can be done, you may find my book, Climatized enlightening. It is available in paperback, eBook, and audiobook.
And don’t forget Climatized is also prepping for the big screen…

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN SEPTEMBER
Oscar Wilde said, “Good intentions are invariably ungrammatical.” Well in my case, not ungrammatical, that would be unaccepatable. But perhaps, they are sometimes imprecise.
It all started in 2007, when Joe, my husband and unknowingly would-be my editor, challenged me to put my thoughts on paper. Personally, I think he was tiring of my rants about the upcoming presidential election. Then eighty-eight thousand words later and much to our surprise, Brotherhood Beyond the Yardwas born and our careers and life dramatically shifted.
Ever since, every vacation morphed into a semi…okay, mostly working vacation, completely supported by my editor-in-residence. And with each trip our baggage became increasingly heavier, piled with file folders and reference books related to the current book I was working on. And yes, Simon and Max always came along for the adventure.
In August, we embarked on a six-week cruise on Oceania’s Insignia, and packed as usual with working documents in tow. Actually, I’m starring at the file folders right now. Or rather they are starring back at me…as they have every day since we left. Now, with nine days left to go, Max is still waiting for me to finish The Infiltrator’s Shadow.

Remember those good intentions? Well, you might say I had an epiphany. I realized how much I missed being with, and spending real, devoted time with the one person who supported me the most. That’s not to say that we don’t spend a lot of time together and enjoy a myriad of activities, but for the last many years my work seemed to dominate. We both enjoy the banter and discussions about my day’s writing, and after years together we are never at a loss of things to talk about. But on this trip something happened to my mindset. Maybe it was because of Joe’s unyielding, never-begrudging support that I never took the time to be completely present.
Max, you’re going to have to wait a little longer…I’m on vacation!

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN AUGUST
Someone once called me an author of “Speculative Fiction.” My husband calls me a scary soothsayer. Perhaps it is because whenever I work on my storylines I take a deep dive and sort out the overlooked dots making an unexpected connection. And as a confirmed political conspiracy theorist, I believe just because it’s a conspiracy doesn’t mean it isn’t true. I try to step away from the headlines and the media spin and seek out the facts. Then I roll them into a fictional plot…to entertain as well as impart some knowledge. Personally, as a reader myself, I always come away more satisfied from a book when I’ve learned something new. And admittedly, my process is incredibly rewarding when my sleuthing proves to be true.
In an earlier newsletter, I explained while lightly editing The Simon Hall series for the re-release the plotlines in each of the four novels seemed to mirror the current headlines. One example is The Ultimate Revenge, first published in 2014. Simon’s masterly plot to take down the national electric grid revealed the vulnerabilities in great detail. Today, those same vulnerabilities exist and have become a greater threat but dwarfed by the Green New Deal spin. In reality, it won’t fix the immediate problems.
David Tice, producer and director of the new movie Grid Down, Power Up takes away my fictional plot but offers an excellent reveal of the grave risk we face today in this amazing documentary, not to be missed. For more information, check out https://griddownpowerup.com/
And for more tantalizing intrigue
The Simon Hall: Complete Political Thriller Series will be $0.99

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN JULY
Sometimes when nothing happens it can be a good thing!
Last month was not one of those occasions. June was a horrific month of lightning and thunderstorms. Ask our irrigations system. One of those nasty little lightning strikes managed to hit the wires in the ground and worked its magical electrical current all the way to Hunter Irrigation System Controller, blowing off not only the cover but the entire control panel. Two weeks before, I turned on the spa and the cover to the swimming pool water filter blew off, shot up twenty feet into the air, and landed on the neighbor’s roof. Thankfully, the trajectory was aimed at an inanimate object. Then there is the pending remodel of our home. As of now, we leave on a six week cruise in July, return in September…two weeks later move out of the house for four months…and to where…still working on that part.
Let’s not forget the volatile stock market, the exuberant gas prices, cost of food, and the incessant talk about stagflation, inflation, and recession! And now as we head into the silly season with the mid-term elections, prepare yourself for the heightened atmosphere of political infighting, outfighting and media
outbursts.
But aside from all the calamity, it was also a solemn month, and a time to reflect on what is really important. Four years earlier, my dear publisher and friend, David Dunham passed away unexpectedly. To this day, I continue to miss his sage advice, his clever quips, and most of all, being able to share my recent works, and the aforementioned, political conversations. But listening to this video each year on the anniversary of his death makes him seem a little bit closer.
Now, about the nothing part…or at least the drip, drip of nothingness.
Hard to imagine that 2022 is half over. But let’s start the second half of the year on a high note. In a few days, the U.S. will celebrate 246 years of Independence. It is a time to reflect on why our history matters. Family picnics, parades, and fireworks all play a part, but I hope everyone sets aside their hotdogs long enough to remember exactly why we continue to fight each day for our Independence!
And when all the excitement dies down, you might want to begin reading The Simon Hall Political Series. The Complete Box Set is now available on Amazon Kindle

HAPPENINGS FROM THE WRITING CAVE IN JUNE
I love writing fiction. It allows me to enter a world where I can stretch my imagination beyond any limits. But most importantly, I love the challenge to create, what I’d like to think, are ingenious plots into plausible and possible scenarios.
However, my latest challenge is to try and maneuver my real-life plot into a positive outcome. Joe is happily back on his feet and feisty as ever after his “underwater exploration.” But the incident gave us pause as we reflected on the possibility of simplifying our lives. That notion, however, was quickly erased. Much too easy. So, in the midst of working on the next book in the Max Ford series, focused on the Climatized movie, and looking for a TV streaming outlet for Simon Hall, we’ve decided to embark on a major remodel of our home…I kiddingly refer to it as my insane asylum. This will start during the height of high construction costs, scarcity of building materials, and lack of available contractors. And to make things even more interesting, we need to find temporary housing for five months during the high season in Florida. Who said life should be easy? But not to be glib, we are fortunate to be able to have the choices, and I wake up each morning reminding Joe, “This is going to be fun!” Stay tuned for my thoughts when we get started on construction. That is when life may become more interesting than fiction. And feel free to remind me at any time that “it’s going to be fun!”
Enough of my personal craziness, I want to thank you for supporting the May promotion downloads. You helped move each of the Simon Hall books again to the top of the Kindle Best Seller List. Now stay tuned for what’s coming next…Happy reading everyone!
