Review of "The Admirer" by Michele Stegman

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday (Week Long Special Edition)Hello my reading friends! It's actually Wednesday, so this review is right on time! If you haven't been around the last few days, let me fill you in very quickly. This week I have been hosting a special review week with a new line of short stories published by Breathless Press called FLIRTS, properly named for their brevity and the feeling that you get while you read them. If you haven't been here, Monday I started with a LGBT title "Eat Dessert First" and yesterday was a Suspense title "Eyes Only". Both were remarkably crafted and today's is no exception. So, on with it!

The Book:Released May 23rd of this year, "The Admirer" is an addition to BP's Timeless line. This is their historical line and covers everything from Ancient Times through World War II. This particular short takes place in the Regency Period. It is a heat level 1 and a very sweet romance. Coming in at just over 6k, it's another perfect fit into a lunch hour with a few moments to spare for ordering or driving and such.

The Timeless historical line Flirt cover is represented by grayish rose petals. I understand the black and white, like old TVs or movies, but personally I believe the color is drab compared to the rest of the cover. I think perhaps cream colored or antique white petals may have looked better. But, that's just my opinion.

The Plot:As often goes in these romances of old, there is an arranged marriage that the heroine, Marcia, is not to happy about. She wants adventure, intrigue, and passion. Upon meeting her fiance', she realizes that he can give her none of these.

When flowers and other gifts begin arriving addressed only from "An Admirer", Marcia sets out on the biggest adventure of her life. But, will she be able to find him before her wedding day?

The Verdict:I absolutely love historical novels, though I must admit, I am NOT a fan of the Regency Period. I know, take me out in the middle of the square and stone me. I can't help it, it's just not my personal taste. That being said, I really liked this short story. It wasn't overly swamped with all the high and mighty jargon that I'm supposed to know before I even pick up the book. The heroine was fresh and dare I say almost scandalous for the period with her late night rendezvous, but she is willing to risk anything for true love. The triangle between the heroine, the Duke, and the Admirer is also well played. (Though I kind'ov had it figured out from the beginning, the author adds enough to still keep you guessing.) So, what's it going to be?
It's a "Five Cups of Love" Read!

A Review of "Eyes Only" by H. K. Sterling

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday (Week Long Special Edition)Last night after reading "Eat Dessert First" and posting my review, I hopped in my bed, cuddled up with my Acer and settled in for my next exciting read. When I loaded my latest FLIRT, I immediately noticed the cover. Of all the Flirt categories, the covers for the Covert lines excite me the most. Dark and Burning... oh yeah! And with H. K. Sterling behind the wheel, I knew I was in for a treat. And, so are you!

The Book:Released March 28, 2014, "Eyes Only" is the first and only Covert style Flirt that has been released from Breathless Press thus far. Coming in at just over 5k words, it was a short forty minute read, perfect for a lunch hour if you must travel to get your lunch. As you can see, this Covert imprint of the Flirt line is truly gorgeous. What exactly is the Covert line? Well, these are all stories of intrigue. Whether there is suspense, murder, or investigations; this line has it. And between this little story and her new series, H. K. Sterling seems to be dominating the line... and believe me, I couldn't be happier! I love the way this author can weave an assorted tale.

The Plot:This particular short deals with an interrogation. In the military world, leaking information is a serious business. No matter how innocent you think it can be, there are always people that will use your relationship to progress their cause. This is the problem faced by a young Marine, and his account of the goings on that lead him to this inquisition. Details are a must, and Ms. Sterling provides this with little effort. And sometimes... not every loose end can be tied.

The Verdict:Love, love, love... loved it! No death, no murder, no gore... just pure old fashion manipulation and interrogation. Great short story, and though it was short, it still felt complete. The ending was a twist that I never saw coming and I hope like hell that she puts out another in this line soon! Last review I was lucky to do for her, I claimed that she could very well be the next JD Robb. I stand behind my words. Even in this short, her true writing ability is amazing!  But, just to make it official....

A review of "Eat Dessert First" by Brantwijn Serrah

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday! (Week Long Special Edition)So, it's not Wednesday yet. I know, I know. But... I have decided to make this week special and hopefully, I can keep it up going all week. This week, I'm feeling especially delicious because it's the last week of school! My kids all passed those stupid tests last week, and I am less than two weeks awake from Disney World with my family!

My celebratory week will be a week that I've decided to FLIRT with you! Wondering what a Flirt is? Well, it's a short story category put out by Breathless Press that has stories that range from 2k-8k. They're only .99 a piece AND each and every FLIRT has a 50% off coupon to buy another flirt and a 20% off to buy any other book off their website. AWESOMESAUCE!  Without further ado, (since I just had my dinner) let's start with the first title of the week...

The Book "Eat Dessert First" is a very short read. Coming in at just 2.5k it was one of the quickest things I could get my hands on. A mere twenty minutes later, and I was done. (Perfect while waiting at a doctor's office.) It is from the LGBT line and you can tell that by the rainbow rose petals on the cover. Each Flirt category has the same basic design and the colors of the petals help distinguish the category, but if you are ever in doubt about what you're getting, each category is also tagged on the cover of the book as well.

The PlotHmmm. This will be harder with the Flirt category of books, because as you may have guessed, there's not a whole lot of plot. Each of these stories are basically a scene or two with motivating characters and some fun thrown in. Trust me, this one doesn't disappoint. As you may have guessed from the title, we're discussing food. The setting is a kitchen, and oh my... my... I forgot all the sexual connotations that can be associated with cooking. After this read, I seemed to remember them ALL!

It is an LGBT romance, and it is a m/m read. Beautifully executed, I believe and truly realistic.

The Verdict?Yum! Yum! Yum! Sexy characters, fun in the kitchen, and it's all about the dessert... hehe. Well, what else can I say, this particular story definitely satisfied my appetite for a quick lusty read.  Yep, You could have guessed it.....

Review of "A Taste for Killing" by H.K. Sterling

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday! And I'm back! Unfortunately, the month of April was not conducive to me reading anything and oh how I missed that! But, it was not all bad. I did receive another acceptance last month and sent out another short as well. That second short was bought just two days ago! It's been great on that end. I also did my first blog talk radio interview at the end of last month and had a blast! But, the real reason you're here is for the Book and the Review! So, lets get on with it!

The Book:"A Taste for Killing" is a short novella published by Breathless Press that was released February of this year. With a word count of slightly under 15k, it took me about two hours to read with a few unwanted interruptions from my children. At a heat level 3, this murder mystery romance gives you just enough spice to really enjoy the romance side of the story without taking away from the who-dunnit side.

The Plot:This is a classical who-dunnit story. There's a death and it needs to be solved ASAP. Unfortunately, with the back log of police work it doesn't look like it will be fast. So, the victims relatives take it upon themselves to hire a private detective to help get the job done. Enter our heroine, Carolyn Woods. Oh she's good. She's got the experience and the drive. What she doesn't have is a man to fill a void in her life left by another.

Enter the hero, or is he a suspect? Crap... he's both! And this is where the story really gets good. Evan Jones is a brilliant young architect. Handsome, fit, and not Carolyn's usual type. But he's also a very prominent suspect. His dealings with the deceased make him suspicious indeed. But, Carolyn's ready to get to the bottom of this case and in Evan's bed. Will she solve the murder before something terrible happens?

The Verdict:This little novella really piqued my interest. I think Ms. Sterling has found her calling in the mystery/suspense genre and I sincerely hope she continues to hone this area of her writing. As this is just the first in a series, I can honestly say that I cannot wait for the others to come out! Great detective work, the clue pacing, the romance, I mean everything just came together perfect. Each and every scene lead you to the next and things just rolled right along until it was over. If you love a true mystery and romance, I cannot begin to recommend this enough to you. Dare I say it... Yep, I'm gonna put this out there... Perhaps our dear Ms. Sterling will become the next JD Robb. She definitely has the talent! Here it is!

Review of "For the Love of Murphy" a Sweet Romance Anthology

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday!Good morning, friends! It's another wonderful Wednesday here in North Carolina and this week I've had the great joy of reading a little selection in paperback! For the Love of Murphy is the second anthology that I've been in that has been converted to print, and there was something about flipping the pages of my own book that warmed me in my cozy little bed last night. So without further ado!

The Book:A collective work from five separate romance authors, "For the Love of Murphy" was released March 17th, 2014 by Roane Publishing in both ebook and print. With the theme of "Murphy's Law" and whatever can go wrong will, each story uses the bad luck of our main characters to drive the stories forward and lead them to their happily ever afters. Complete at just over 200 pages, this short anthology provides a few hours of escape into the world of sweet romance.

The Stories: No Wrong Turns- by Lisa A. Adams: I generally don't review my own books as I feel there is too much bias going on. Of course I love my own story. Hopefully you will too. The heroine of the story is leaving her old life behind, and in a quirky series of "Murphy" events, she winds up stranded. Our hero may have what it takes to assure her that good can come from disaster, but he would have to be a seriously special man. Can Sean live up to the challenge?

Falling for You- by Michelle Ziegler: Down trodden and depressed after her hit and run at the wedding alter a year ago, Darci has gone into hiding. With the help of her best friend, she has no choice to rejoin life after her friend signs her up for an online dating service. With the string of bad luck and "Murphy" guiding her towards relationship embarrassments, Darci can't help but think about the one man from her past that got away years ago. Love lost and rekindled is one of my favorite themes in romance. Mrs. Ziegler does an excellent job of pulling you into the relationship between the heroine and her best friend. And, truth be told, I was dying to get to the end of this one. I knew something big was about to happen, and Ms. Zieglar gave me exactly what I had hoped for. This was a great short story and I hope to read more from the author very soon.

Coffee and Cufflinks- by Anabelle Blume: Olivia is a successful business woman who is about to lose everything. Through no fault of her own, things keep messing up at work and she's taking the hits. The only thing left is to appease the client. Schmoozing and total butt-kissing is in order. Unfortunately, the client is a prick. Thank God for small miracles like coffee in the morning and a gentle soul that can perk up your day for just five minutes. But can just five minutes counter balance the other messes in her life? Absolutely not. How can her business life and her personal life ever blend together? Just wait and see. I absolutely am enthralled with Ms. Blume's use of description of the women at the bar. So spot on and accurate, that I found myself shaking my head and laughing at the heroine and her best friend. I love when scenes come alive in your mind because the story telling is that good. Congrats Ms. Blume!

A Slippery Slope- by Rebecca Hart: Let me preface this with, yes, I'm published in this anthology. Yes, I love my own story and think it's great. That being said, this story was my favorite of the bunch. Maybe because I felt an immediate connection with the heroine, Anne. The story telling was amazing, the female friends were perfect, and the man... Um yes! I'll take one please! You have to read this cute story. In fact... I think I'll read it again after I'm done here.

The Shamrock Incident- by London St. James: Wow, Ms. St. James had me from the start. Setting in Charlotte, North Carolina. Check. Flower Shop like the one I used to work at. Check. Assembly line rush orders, chaotic deliveries, and sheer trouble waiting around the corner. Check, check. check. I was so caught up in this story, I think I read it the fastest. Ms. St. James has already established herself as an amazing author and has proven that fact once again with this short sweet story.

The Verdict:The whole of the anthology left me wanting for nothing. Even at a heat level one, all of the authors have put in enough sensual excitement that you are waiting for glorious moment. All of these stories live up to that challenge leaving your heart skipping and a smile across your face, just as a powerful kiss is shared. Promises of things to come keep your mind wandering for hours, thinking about the endless possibilities between these couples. I'm sure you already know the verdict, but to make it official....

Review of "Jungle Fever" by Maria Cox

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday!Hello again, Readers! Yes, I know, it's been two weeks since my last post and for the first time in months... I failed you. All I can say is "I'm sorry. Sometimes, life happens." Unfortunately, all five of my children, my husband, and myself came down with that lovely new stomach bug that's been going around. My only response to that is, "Thank God that it only lasted a little more than 24 hours for each of us."  It hits you quick, drains your energy, forces you to have buckets and bags on standby & don't even think about eating. Anyhow, we all survived and I'm getting back to things like I like them. Routine is important for everyone. My routine of reading one book a week is making me become a better reader and, I also believe, a better writer. So! Without further ado... this week's review!

The Book: Jungle Fever is a short novella written by Maria Cox and was released by Secret Cravings Publishing on February 5th, 2014. Coming in at just under 9k, this story was released in Secret Cravings "Weekend Getaway" category and is a spicy heat level four. It took me less than an hour to read and would  be perfect for a lunch time snack. With rather unique characters, I was impressed with the break away from the traditional stereo types. Some would automatically look at the cover and assume that the male was the chauvinistic thug and the girl the innocent princess, but you would be wrong. (I know I was.)

The Plot:It's Becca's birthday, and after being under house arrest for three weeks because of some dubious actions, her father releases her under her older brother's care for the night. Her brother is a business man and the last person she wants to be around, but she'll take what she can get.  It's a night of clubbing, dancing, and fun that awaits (even under the eyes of careful watchmen.) But its her carefully planned escape from these body guards and the sight of an old acquaintance that really turns this novella up.

Enter the hero:
Jaden is a hard working man. A regular nine to five job and an after hours gig in partnership with Becca's brother. He's focused and ready to move on past mistakes he's made in the past, including sleeping with Becca. But, spotting her in the club leaves his mind twisted as he recalls the incredible night of passion that they shared weeks ago. He knows that she could be the end of his career, but will his lust and love for the woman outweigh his sensibility?

The Verdict:This little novella promises a quick getaway. And with a heat level of four in under 9k, you know that there will be sexual encounters and quick. I love that the author used a couple that had already gotten together once. Back flashes give you a sense of intimacy that's realistically possible and not just a "love at first sight" scenario. There were some assumptions that the reader would have to make on the HEA at the end, but the characters definitely received their Happy For Now. Though this really has nothing to do with the writing, I must point out that I'm a little disappointed with the cover. The title is Jungle Fever, so you expect a mixed couple and it is written that way. But the cover gives a version of our Italian-American princess a very different appearance. As I said though, nothing to do with the story itself. Overall, it was a fast read, a quick romp in the alley so to speak, and worthy of the price for the escape. So, where would I place it????

Review of "Demon Protector" by Lauren Pilla

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday! It's that time of week again, another great new title, another couple of hours to myself, and another review... JUST FOR YOU!

The Book:Today's novella stands complete at approximately 27k and took me a little under three hours for me to read. Paranormal romance in genre, I must say that I was happy to see something outside the box like a demon instead of the typical were-shifters. That said the heroine is a witch, and well I just love all things witch-y! Released by Secret Cravings Publishing on October 8th, 2013 and a very sexy heat level four.

The Plot:What would you do if you finally found out that you were a witch, your parents were both witches and had kept you clueless, and suddenly had demons trying to kill you so they could suck your power and claim it as their own? Yeah, that's where this one starts, and that's just in the first chapter. But, lets throw in another wrench... not all demons are made the same.

Enter the hero- a brooding dark male, with superior strength, a vivid description of any Men's Fitness magazine cover model, and a french accent that you can almost hear as your reading. Um... yum! Sexy, confident, and willing to break his own rules for the sassy little witch that has suddenly captured his interest. He has to protect her!

The adventure begins and it is a race to the finish! Will she learn enough in time to protect herself, or will her Demon Protector have to step in and save the day, facing his own kind, and a terrible secret?

The Verdict? This was an adventure that gripped me. Will she get away? Will he be able to get over his past? Will she? I must say that the well thought out character arcs of this story was the driving point. Each must grow and change in their own way before they can find their happily ever after, whether that's together or apart. The author does a great job of incorporating the sexual aspects of attraction between the couple as well. Each scene held something a little different which made the story flow easier and seemed less repetitious. The demon was a unique character and addition to the paranormal genre. So, what do you think? I say...

Review of "Grand Slam" by Misty Matthews

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday! It's been another crazy, hectic week here as my house renovations are taking over almost every single other aspect of my life. But, my weekly read was something I was not willing to give up. I put my foot down and explained to my hubby that you wonderful readers NEEDED me to post my blog this morning to tell you all about another fabulous book. (And it was fabulous!) He finally saw things my way, and I got an hour break, and you get to hear about an amazing new novella! So it's a win-win-win!

The Book~Grand Slam is a novella length story, coming in at just over 16k and released by Sweet Cravings Publishing January 22, 2014. A quick read, I was done in under an hour, and some sport analogies in it but nothing that would get anyone confused. I am a sports fan, but not a baseball fan. Football and Hockey are my men sports, and Soccer for the ladies. However, I was not confused at all with the backdrop of this sport, as the author did a decent job of incorporating the big events of a game without over detailing it.

The Plot~ A wonderful week of passion after college graduation, leaves our heroine, Brittany, with a lifetime of wonderful memories and a token that she won't soon forget. Raising a child on your own is her personal choice, besides how could she stand in the way of all his major league dreams. But keeping secrets always has its downfall.

When her son begs to her to go to the game with him, Brittany fears that her life will topple to the ground. If big baller Justin were to fins out about his son, he may take her life away. She's already lost have her heart to the playboy, she won't let him take the other half of her heart as well.

Enter the hero, it's been almost eleven years since he's seen her, but he's thought of her every day. Sure there are tabloids and gossip columns rumors, but Justin is still searching for the one that got away.

When he hits a Grand Slam and her face appears on the jumbotron, he's sure it's his imagination, but the camera zooms in again and he knows it's her. With raw emotion he aims to get what he lost back, but something doesn't sit well in stomach. And the tides they are turning.

The Verdict?Ms. Matthews, I am in love with your writing style! This was a story of true character development and emotion. The intertwined back story was believable with all the detail and explanation. A tug at my heart strings and almost a tear in my eye. This story was a step apart from almost everything I've reviewed here so far. With minor sexual scenes written in to enhance the story, but not overpower, I believe that Ms. Matthews will one day grace the coveted New York Times Best Seller list! Really, truly amazing writing here.

It's a "Five Cups of Love" read!Though I'd give it 6 if I could!

Review of "My Bloody Valentine - Vol. 1" Edited by Kristen Pavka

What's New to Review ~ Wednesday!Good Morning my fellow avid readers! Oh, I have the most splendid anthology to tell you about today and I just can't wait! So We're starting right away!

The Book:  "My Bloody Valentine - Vol.1" was released just this past Friday on Valentine's Day! It is a short story anthology with twenty one very unique and different stories that was written by seventeen brilliant authors. Edited by one Ms. Kristen Pavka and published on ebook by Breathless Press. The collection stands complete at a little over 38k and each individual story hoovers around 2k. Excellent length for each story, might I add, for those waiting in the car for five minutes to pick a kid up, or hiding it in the laundry room while you're pretending to fold clothes (not that I would know anything about that...). Short, quick, HOT, steamy, reads that all have a Bloody theme to them.

Yes, unlike any other anthology I've ever seen out there, this collection of shorts all have a steamy quickie, but may not necessarily have a Happily Ever After or Happy For Now ending. But, the writing! Oh the writing is amazing! Each and every one of these talented writers adds a new voice to the collection, a new situation, and a new twist on some old tales. They were all absolutely incredible!

The Stories:Little Red by Tysche Dwai - A very new twist on an old tale. Rumors have been swarming the realm and Red still has to make it to Granny's. But, a magical being meets her along the way and where there are fangs, you have to know that there are vampires!

Butterfly by Decadent Kane - The devil, a demon, and an extremely strong heroine that is willing to do anything for love. I'm already a fan of Ms. Kane and this story has been added to the list of greats!

One Way to Say Goodbye by Robin Crawford - An excellent addition to the antho! The emotional intensity of this story is well crafted. You feel exactly what the heroine feels.

Last Kiss by D. F. Krieger - The apocalypse is here! Drama, drama, drama! A couple fighting against a deadly disease, one last time, one last kiss. Great story telling!

No Change in Policy in Room 8 by Torie James - Yes! A fabulous short. very gripping and a twist at the end that leaves you laughing at the Hero's cockiness. Loved it! way to go Ms. James!

The Dark Man by H.K. Sterling - A life ending game, or is it just the beginning? Excellent read! A strong heroine and a hero you want to partake in!

Blindfold by Jay Wilburn - And just what exactly would you do for food when the apocalypse comes? A very sensually sexy story and an ending that could lead to disaster but they're together.

Dangerous Desires by Jen Bradlee - Historical with a masked man and a twist. Loved the feel of old world London this short had in such a short length. Bravo Ms. Bradlee!

Three Little Men by Dianne Hartsock - The first tale in this book that actually felt almost like it was straight out of a horror scene. Creatively imagined and well-written! Too bad I read it at night and was slightly freaked out. But, I LOVE horror so that's a good thing!

Awaiting Our Reunion by Christine Morgan - This short read like a memoir to me from the beginning and was the first in the book that was emotionally painful for me. I almost wanted to cry it was that good. Congrats on focusing in on that romantic pain Ms. Morgan!

Rhythm and Blues by Brantwijn Serrah - A shifter, some voodoo magic, and a sin for a sin. Totally brilliant! This story came from nowhere and knocked my socks off. It was definitely unexpected and fit the anthology well!

Tempting Sin by Shellie Rosewarne - An angel tempted by sin and lead by lust. A fulfilling sexual encounter, well played out and incredibly described. Props to Ms. Rosewarne!

Rebirth with a Rose by Kera Faire - Don't mess with a woman who wants to be left to please herself and is wearing stilettos. Yep, Lesson Learned.  Thanks for that one Ms. Faire. I loved the ending there. Just enough sarcasm and flair to love this heroine.

Invoking Ostara by Lisa A. Adams - Yes, this is my story. Of course I love it... Watch for the twist at the end.

Spider Prince by Iyana Jenna - A unique shifter story. Finally, one that doesn't involve Werewolves and the like. Ms. Jenna has an eye for detail here and I can almost imagine the writer sitting and watching a spider crawl across the floor, trying to get every word right. The secret is in the details. Bravo!

Stormy Night in Old Town by Kelly Ryan - A true ghost story here and a steamy love scene. Ms. Ryan has a way with the sexy parts that's for sure. Kudos! I loved it!

Aphrodisiac by Roni Sharpe - I always did love a good Incubus story. Perfect. Hot loving and a fulfilled love scene. Then there is the coldness of a casual lay. Great story telling.

Siren's Call by Shelli Roseware - Ah, the Sirens of old Ancient Greek tales raise their weary heads in this title and it's a hit. Of course I'm quite partial to mythic infused writing so it's almost certain that I would like this story. Ms. Roseware has done her research and that speaks volumns to a a fellow historical writer. Great story!

Feral by Decadent Kane - Continuing the elf revolution, Ms. Kane has pleased us once again. Dare I say, Ms. Kane be crowned the new Elf Queen? She's got my vote! Hot, teasing love, and an elf's undoing. More please!

The Shed by Brantwijn Serrah - This story is of secrets and pain. (The good kind!) Loved it. Probably the hottest read in the book and a great addition to the anthology. I was just thinking, I want a Reid :-)

Under the Shadow of Wings by H.K. Sterling - A goddess on a mission. A lingering soul to devour. She's found her prey. Lets hear it for the mile-high club! I haven't seen a story on a plane in years, and Ms. Sterling has covered it in detail. Yay!

The Verdict? There were so many different tales that seemed to sneak up on you and take you for a ride. Different settings, characters, pairings, love making, and plots all take a wild ride in this anthology. With all of the personal detail above is there any doubt?

It's a "Five Cups of Love" read!

New Release! My Bloody Valentine (anthology)

It's Release Day!It's a great Friday morning here in North Carolina. (Except of course for the snow and ice that has been on the ground for the last four days... uggh.) But! It's Valentine's Day! That wonderful day of the year that has been turned into a marketing scheme of men having to buy roses or chocolates or dinner for their loved ones.Yep, just one day a year, you have to show me how special I am. (I'm not sarcastic or anything.)

But along side of that, I do have a new story being released today!

Invoking Ostara Macey has trained extensively to complete the sacred ceremony of invoking Ostara, but

when madness ensues and threatens her lover, will Ostara hear her pleas?
