AI is Going to Kill Us All, Maybe. By Josh Stallings

Q: Chime in with your thoughts on writers using AI. Is it okay to use it for some tasks? Where do you draw the line?

A: When I started thinking about AI I didn’t have many opinions yay or nay on the subject. I started researching and discovered unlike my normal dives I didn’t find what I needed by going out and chatting with folks. To understand AI I needed to look to the (gasp) internet. If AI robots ever have their own bars and social clubs you know I’ll be hanging there, getting them drunk on...

All the Perfumes of Arabia, by Catriona

Chime in with your thoughts on writers using AI. Is it okay to use itfor some tasks? Where do you draw the line?

The Stone of Scone (pronounced Scoon)

Nope. Nyet. Pas du tout. Aye, naw.

Got that? I don't think it's okay. Is it inevitable? That's a different question and (for once) I'm staying on topic.

For me, it wouldn't matter if I was using generative AI technology to produce a whole novel, develop a character, bounce an idea, or hammer out a synopsis. Why not?

Currently, as far as I know, the...

All my own work... by Cathy Ace

Chime in with your thoughts on writers using AI. Is it okay to use itfor some tasks? Where do you draw the line?

NB: No AI was used in the creation of this blog post. I will not beusing it because I enjoy writing, so why steal that pleasure/terror frommyself?

On a more serious note, yes, I do think conversations must be had. I think the current statement from the Authors' Guild is a good place to start. Click through here to read what they are saying: https://authorsguild.org/advocacy/artific...

Chime in with yourthoughts on writers using AI. Is it okay to use it for some tasks? Where do youdraw the line?

I don’t think writers should use AI because it’s imperfect, and it isn't just another online technology; it’s a distraction from honing their craft and exercising their native talent andimagination.

The rumpus over Artificial Intelligencewill have us believe that our robot overlords are here, and writers everywhere mustbecome Sarah Connor or Kyle Reese aga...

Go Away Hal, I'm Busy Writing!

Q: Chime in with your thoughts on writers using AI. Is it okay to use it for some tasks? Where do you draw the line?

-from Susan

Full disclosure: I’ve never tried it and have only read about it - facts and opinions. Read an Advice column Sunday in which a college administrator asked the columnist if it was okay to use AI to mock up a draft administrative report, and the advisor said, sure, but the specifics in the report, obviously, had to be customized. I read an article last week that wondered...

Call My Agent

by Abir

How does a writer find an agent? Give us your thoughts.

The topic of an agent is a strange one. In many countries, e.g. France, there are no literary agents. The publishing houses deal directly with the writers. In Anglo-Saxon countries, the picture is more complicated. Traditionally they’ve been the gatekeepers to the industry, the ones who wade through the slush piles, find new talent and then guide their careers.

With the rise of self-publishing and the celebrity author though, the fie...

How Does a Writer Find an Agent? from James W. Ziskin

How does a writer find an agent? Give us your thoughts.

Over the past thirty years, I’ve managed to find representation from three different agents. The first was back in 1992. When she said yes to my snail mail submission, I was sure publication, financial independence, and fame were just around the corner.

They weren’t

Two books later, there were no offers from publishers.

My first experience with an agent was unsatisfying, and not just because she didn’t sell my books. We never gelled. In fact, ...

Going from memory, adding a dash of imagination

by Dietrich

Since I don’t have an agent, I’m going to skip this question, and go back to one from the past week: Please describe a scene from your latest novel that you’re particularly proud of. Or better yet, why not share it?

So the scene below is from The Get. It’s an introduction to one of the key characters, where we learn much about who he is and what he’s after. But, what inspired the setting for the book was Toronto’s Kensington Market area the way I remember it from when I was growing ...

Into The Void

Terry here, answering the burning question that plagues new writers: How does a writer find an agent?
First, you need to decide if you need an agent. The answer is generally yes, if you can get one. But if you are publishing independently, then you probably don’t need an agent. (Discuss). If that's the case, read only through #3 below, because that's for everyone, even if you don't think you need an agent.
I’ve been writing for a long time, and I remember when getting an agent was eas...

Agents, Agents Everywhere but Not a One to be Had...

How does a writer find an agent? Give us your thoughts.

Brenda here.

I believe that I am entirely the wrong writer to answer this question, because while I've dabbled in seeking out an agent, I've only ever landed one, and she retired a year after signing me.

My books have mainly been published by small- to mid-size Canadian publishers. I discussed acquiring an agent with my first publisher, who became a mentor and friends. She suggested that I didn't need an agent since this would take up a perce...
