Author Interview of Kimberly Brockman

Interview of Kimberly Brockman - Author of the Raven Series
Raven Cover

(D.R.) Welcome, Kimberly. It is good to have you here for an interview today and to be able to give readers some insight on you as a person, not just a name on the cover of a book. Will you please tell us a little about yourself, like where you are from and how you started your writing career?

(Kimberly) Absolutely! I was born in Georgia and still reside there. We have great summers, mild storm seasons, and less than a handful of poisonous spiders. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else!

As a child I loved to read Christopher Pike books. I believe they were my gateway into creative writing. I won awards in school for short stories, but I never wrote anything substantial until Raven. Over the past couple of years I began to have some incredibly strange dreams and would wake up trying to memorize every detail before it could evaporate from my mind. In January of 2012 I woke up from the most exhilarating dream I’d ever had thinking, “Wow. This is it. This is what I’m going to write about!” Eight months later I saved the 80,000 word file as “Raven” on my computer and began my journey into becoming a published author.

(D.R.) I have experienced writer’s block in the past. Have you experienced writer’s block as well? How did you manage to overcome your writer’s block?

(Kimberly) Thankfully, no, I haven’t. My creative juices were free flowing almost the entire time I was penning Raven. The only time I had to work through any type of obstacle was when the screen became so blurry through my sleep deprived eyes that I couldn’t type any more. Luckily, six hours on a soft pillow and several cups of coffee set that straight!

(D.R.) Writing for many authors is a way to pass the time or a hobby. Do you write as a hobby or do you write full time as a means to provide an income for you and/or your family?

(Kimberly) I am a small business owner as well as mommy to a busy seven year old. Writing is only part time for me at this point. I would love to be able to do it full time. Imagine… creating and writing all day every day! What a wonderful life that would be!

(D.R.) Some writers use a pen name to publish their novels, is this the case you for?

(Kimberly) A pen name? No way! I worked my fingers to the bone writing and creating the Raven Series. I don’t want to share credit with anyone – especially a make believe name!

(D.R.) Most writers have been influenced by other authors through the years. Can you tell us the author or set of authors that influenced you the most for your particular genre?

(Kimberly) I would have to give the honors to two authors…Christopher Pike for the mystery and romance aspects and of course Stephanie Meyer for the intriguing paranormal romance of the young adult genre.

(D.R.) If you could pick one of your books to be made into a movie, which book would you pick? Who do you envision playing the major roles in the movie?

(Kimberly) Raven, of course, and it isn’t because it’s the only book I’ve published! Seriously, though, I can definitely see Raven being made into a three movie saga. I would die for Zac Efron to be my Chase because of his glorious smile, Emma Roberts or Lily Collins as Rayne, and Liam Hemsworth for the role of Alex.

(D.R.) Do you currently have any works in progress? Can you tell us what the book is about and when readers can expect to find it available in ebook or paperback?

(Kimberly) I am in the middle of the second book in the Raven Series. It should be out in summer of 2013, but remains untitled as of yet. I have also been working on a special young adult book that follows a girl reflecting back on her childhood journal through her high school years. It has a tentative title, but I’m keeping that a secret for now. Both will be available in ebook as well as paperback.

(D.R.) Are your books currently available in ebook format and/or in paperback? Where can readers find your books?

(Kimberly) Raven can be purchased in ebook or paperback format through Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

(D.R.) Where can your fans find information on you and your books on the internet?

(Kimberly)

Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/KimBrockman
Twitter: www.twitter.com/KimBrockman
Official Website: www.RavenSeries.com

(D.R.) Is there anything else you would like to say for your fans and readers before we conclude the interview?

(Kimberly) Thank you all so very much for reading and spreading the word about Raven and the Raven Series. I appreciate each and every one of you! I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family and friends and for that I am forever grateful. Feel free to connect with me on any of my networking sites: facebook, goodreads, or twitter. I look forward to hearing from all of Raven’s fans!

One last thanks to YOU for doing this wonderful interview. An author interview is to a book what a commercial is for a movie. So, THANK YOU! 

(D.R.) Ladies and gentlemen, this concludes my interview with Kimberly Brockman. Thank you for sitting down with me and conducting this interview. I wish you the best of luck in your writing career and hope readers will enjoy your books for years to come.

Nobody Loves a Bigfoot Like a Bigfoot Babe by Simon Okill

Nobody Loves a Bigfoot Like a Bigfoot Babe by Simon Okill

I started writing full time after an accident at work forced retirement. I first dabbled in screen writing and slowly developed a TV series explaining the paranormal. The Producers couldn’t get funding so the series was dropped. One of the episodes involved Bigfoot and was expanded into my first novel. It is the first in a series of seven Bigfoot adventures. I have completed part 1 of my latest work in progress Eternally Yours where a woman is treated in an asylum but as she gets her memory back, her vampire tendencies return. I have several completed scripts available.
“Nobody Loves a Bigfoot Like a Bigfoot Babe”

The Northern California town of Big Beaver is a tourist-trap for Bigfoot spotters, alien sightings and is home to The Phantom Bigfoot Bather. One particularly weird Beaverite, Duane, has kept the Bigfoot a secret until a feisty female Bigfoot abducts a teenager. Now he must juggle the FBI, MB, his close friend and crypto-zoologist and Sheriff Lou while dressing up as Bigfoot to lure hunters away from the real thing. Can Duane keep his Bigfoot friends a secret?

5 Star Review of Athine Verses by author Shannon McRoberts

Athine Verses by Shannon McRoberts

Athine Verses was a great read for me. The detailed story packed into this novella was interesting from start to finish.

The book starts off with a prologue that gives some history into the gods and events that had happened earlier in history. If you are not one for lots of history then you can skip the prologue and go right to chapter one. Some readers love history and lots of names and places, other readers don’t like the history. Don’t worry though if you are one of those that don’t like history up front....you can skip the prologue and not miss a beat in the book. I for one read the history as it was enlightening and well written. A very good job of tying both Greek and Norse mythology into one encompassing story.

The story flows seamlessly as you learn about Harmonia and Athine, two half sisters, both the daughters of Ares. The story moves between both character leads and shows the world from their point of view. The transitions between the character leads were well written, even in places where things happened at the same time. It was a nice transition to see multiple things happening at the same time as Shannon did well at story showing instead of story telling.

Without spoiling the plot..... There is an effort to save the world and another effort to destroy the world. I will not say who is involved in which part of the plot, but it was well written and made for a nice surprise towards the end of the book.

Technical aspects of the book were almost flawless. The sentence structure was well written and provided details that let the reader visualize what their surroundings looked like. This was expertly done as the perfect amount of detail was given which kept me interested in the book.

The only downside of the entire book is that it was too short. Roughly 25,000 words kept me in my seat for three hours straight and left me wanting more when I was finished with the book. I will definitely be reading the next two books in the series to get more of what Shannon has started in this book.

I would recommend this book for readers in middle school grades and higher. There is no use of profanity, no sexual encounters, and the violence is mild but realistic.

A must read for lovers of fantasy and mythology. If you like a book with a strong female lead, then you are going to love this novella.

5 out of 5 Stars for a very well written story in regards to content, technical style, and enjoyment.

5 Star Review of Deception Peak by Author Dianne Gardner

Today I had the privilege of reading Deception Peak by Dianne Gardner. Here is my review of this amazing book.

Review of Deception Peak by Author Dianne Gardner

I sat down with Deception Peak and finished the book in one sitting. As I was reading the story I was thinking “My son would like this book”.

Dianne weaves a story that is interesting, easy to follow, and filled with excitement, and adventure.

The main character in the story takes a boy named Ian and his father into a world of adventure as they travel through a portal in their own home. Ian and his father Alex travel back and forth between their world and this other world several times before they are finally trapped in the alternate world and separated from each other.

Most of the story finds Ian attempting to escape from the Meneks and trying to find his father. Friendships are built as he experiences adversity each and every time you turn the page.

Not all friendships are meant to last, and some of Ian’s new friends earn a hero’s funeral.

Does Ian find his dad? Well it is a young adult fantasy novel, so you might think he finds him in the end.

Does the book end happily every after? Happily ever after is so different for each person, I wont spoil the ending here.

Well worth reading and I will definitely being reading this again with my son.

It would be save to let children 3rd Grade and above read this story. No profanity and no sexual references. There is a minor bit of violence, but none so graphic or detailed that younger children could not read the novel.

5 out of 5 Stars for a very well written story in regards to content, technical style, and enjoyability.

Self-Publishing Options - Which One is Right for You?

Self-Publishing Options - Which One is Right for You?

I want to start off by saying that I am not bashing any of the online eBook retailers. I am providing information based on my self publishing experiences. I hope this posting helps at least one author become more successful in their self publishing journey.

Amazon announced the Kindle Direct Publishing “Select” (KDP Select) program and authors jumped at the opportunity of increased book sales and profits. Some authors did great during the start of the KDP Select program, but many more had no gain from joining the program.

KDP Select requires authors to grant exclusive rights to Amazon for the distribution of their eBook around the world and prevents the author from self publishing their eBook through other online retailers such as Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.

The exclusivity in KDP Select lasts for 90 days and is automatically renewed unless the author elects to not have their contract with KDP Select renewed. To ensure it is not automatically renewed the author must make the selection under the interface options for their book. If not, then their book will be enrolled in the program for an additional 90 day period.

KDP Select provides Amazon Prime members an opportunity to borrow an author’s eBook for no additional cost to the customer. This in itself puts the author into the money share for the allotted value of the KDP Select program for the month. The author may make more or less money for an Amazon Prime member borrowing the book than for an actual sale depending on the price their eBook is normally priced at.

The program also allows authors a chance to offer their eBook for free for up to 5 days during the 90 day enrollment into KDP Select. This provides the author with a way to get their eBook into the hands of many readers during the free download days and helps spread their name.

KDP Select is the only way to list your eBook for free on Amazon unless you list it for free on another site and Amazon price matches the other eBook retailer.

Exclusivity is something that can help or hurt an indie author in the long run.

Exclusivity does not mean that Amazon is going to promote your book for you. The promotion of eBooks for indie authors is left up to them. They did not get a big contract and a publicity deal, so they must publicize their own book or find a social media group with shared interests to help spread the word of the book.

Exclusivity means that the author cannot publish through other retailers such as Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords. This in itself can prevent the author from reaching the crowd they wish to sell their eBook to. Amazon is one of the top eBook retailers in the nation, but there are many readers that do not own a kindle and prefer to read on a different digital reader or in PDF format on their computer.

Personally I have only had 3 copies of an eBook borrowed on KDP Select in the past 75 days. Whereas my total sales from paid customers are at 30 books combined between Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords during the same sales period. I am not saying that KDP Select is not for every author, only that for me it has not boosted sales for me personally.

My five free days provided me close to 1,000 downloads of my one eBook that is in the KDP Select program. Very few of those downloads led to a review being posted. The fact is, that there are many who search Amazon for free eBooks and download at will. Some of these people have so many eBooks that they can not possibly ever read them all, or only downloaded the eBook because it was free and may never intend to actually read the eBook.

If you consider the growing market competition in the eBook industry then you have to consider who Amazon’s competitors are. The major competitors in digital sales are Barnes and Noble, Apple, and Sony. Each of these companies provides a digital eBook reading device that you can read their specific format on. Smashwords does not provide a portable eBook reader (unless you consider your laptop) but provides eBooks for download for almost every reader format available. Smashwords also distributes to major eBook retailers such as Sony, Apple, Diesel, and Kobo. When you consider how many channels that you cannot make your eBook available through, then maybe KDP Select is not the best route.

How can you market your books?

The first thing you need to do is make sure your eBook is ready for the public. The last thing you need is to put out a book that is not ready for distribution and all of a sudden you have a large number of negative reviews that will probably hurt the sales of your eBook. Make the sacrifice by spending a few dollars to have your eBook edited by a professional Copyeditor. Content Editing is good, but copyediting is probably the most important step in the editing process. Readers will not buy your book if they find multiple technical errors in the excerpt/sample listed on the eBook retailer’s website. These technical errors are more of a turn off from your eBook than bad content inside the book.

Research the online self publishing platforms and see which platform or group of platforms will best suit your needs as an indie author. The platform that works for one author, might nit be the one that works for you. Make sure you are familiar with all of them so you have a better chance at succeeding in the self publishing world.

The next thing you need to do is pay a professional cover artist to design your eBook cover. Many readers will not even look inside the eBook if the cover doesn’t interest them first. Packaging your eBook is just like packaging anything else in a store. Professional cover artists can be contracted for as low as $40.00 (USD) and as high as several hundred dollars. Spend the money and have your cover done properly.

Marketing is all you. If you do not have a blog, then go make one. Don’t post crude on it though. You want to post stuff about your eBook. Your blog should have been started well before you published your eBook so you would have a community of friends and followers prior to your eBook being released to the public. There are several ways to do this to include occasionally posting chapters of your book on your website for free. If you plan to write more than one eBook in a series then you may want to consider posting your entire book in chapters over several months or a full year. This will allow you time to build a community of fans prior to releasing your second book to the public. If your fans enjoyed the free chapters from your first eBook, then they may buy the second eBook when it hits retailers.

Twitter and Facebook are also your friends. Create an account where you can market your books and share excerpts with your fans. Remember that you are trying to build a community of readers and fans. Post stuff to your Twitter and Facebook accounts that readers want to see. Excerpts of your eBook are great because they may interest a reader or fan enough to go buy your eBook.

Find yourself a social media network with similar goals as your own. There are many groups out there to include the Author’s Social Media Support Group (http://asmsg.weebly.com) and the Independent Author Network (http://www.independentauthornetwork.com). These two groups are filled with authors seeking the same goals. They can offer advice and support to other indie authors as they build upon the knowledge and experiences of each other.

Interview with Roxanne Hargrove - Erotic Author

Happy Reunion Cover

An interview with Roxanne Hargrove

Erotic author of "Happy Reunion"

(D.R.) Today I welcome Roxanne Hargrove, author of Happy Reunion, the opportunity to sit down with me and talk about himself, her short story Happy Reunion, and her works in progress.

(D.R.) Welcome, Roxanne. It is good to have you here for an interview today and to be able to give readers some insight on you as a person, not just a name on the cover of a book. Will you please tell us a little about yourself, like where you are from, and how you started your writing career?

(Roxanne) Thank you, David. I currently live in a small town in Ohio with my parents but have only lived here a year. Prior to that, I lived in Beckley, West Virginia and have lived several places prior to that.

I’ve enjoyed writing since I was in high school. I began writing poetry and silly little short stories that would make my peers and teachers laugh. I found in my adult life, I started to enjoy writing erotica. I would write steamy little short stories and share them with my friends who would declare they needed a cigarette after reading them.

I never took my writing very seriously until last year. The year before, I had encouraged my significant other to publish his written works. That got me into editing which got me acquainted with other authors.

Last year, I joined in doing some teasers with other writers of erotica and got so much positive feedback that I really started to think about writing something to publish. Also, I wanted to know if I would be able to do the whole thing by myself without having to pay someone to aid me. I did it!

(D.R.) I know Happy Reunion is an erotic short story, but can you tell me a little bit more about Happy Reunion and what readers can expect to find as they journey through the pages?

(Roxanne) Happy Reunion is about a man who left for business a year ago, leaving his wife Laura. Now that his work is done, he’s coming home and you can imagine the pent up sexual frustrations of the two.

From the moment the two get home until the end, readers can expect a complete view into the love the characters have for each other as they release their sexual tension.

I feel anyone who has been separated from their lover for any period of time will be able to relate to the story.

(D.R.) Do you write under a pen name? If so do your close friends and family know your pen name and the titles of the books you write?

(Roxanne) Yes, I do write under a pen name. I make it no secret as to what my real name is to anyone. Everyone who knows me, knows my pen name, my real name, and the title of my book.

(D.R.) I know it is a stretch, but is there a message you are trying to get out to readers as they make their way through your story?

(Roxanne) I want people to know that distance and length of time apart is nothing in the face of true love. If you’re meant to be together, there will be a happy reunion in your future. Never give up and never stray from that love.

(D.R.) For many authors, family is vital in their writing, while others separate their writing careers from their real lives. What does your family think about your books and how do they support you in your writing career.

(Roxanne) My family was so proud of me when I published my book. I did it without any help, except the encouragement from a few very special friends and the man who owns my heart.

My mother actually read my book and told me it was very well written. My father was so proud that I set my mind to write a story, find out what I needed in order to format it correctly, and publish the story. I even created my own cover. He won’t read the book.

(D.R.) Some authors describe having periods of writer’s block and some really struggle through these periods. Did you experience writer’s block while writing Happy Reunion?

(Roxanne) Not at all. Happy Reunion is based on my current situation with my lover. It’s a reflection of my hopes for our own reunion. It was easy.

(D.R.) Every author has their own technique for overcoming writer’s block. How did you manage to overcome this period when you were unable to continue with the story?

(Roxanne) I haven’t had any trouble with Happy Reunion but there is another story I’m writing for a collection that I get stumped with at times.

I almost gave up on that one before I even had once sentence written. It’s about show girl. That’s all I’m going to say. I didn’t know anything about show girls. I mean nothing and had no clue on how to set the character up. I didn’t want to do the research either. It was too much like work to me. I write for fun.

I got past it by just sitting my lazy butt down and doing the research any way. A great story is forming from just making myself write. That’s what you have to do when you you’re a writer. Just write.

(D.R.) I started writing many years ago as a hobby and eventually turned it into a little more when I published my first book. Are you writing as a hobby or are you writing full time to provide an income for you and your family?

(Roxanne) It’s definitely just a hobby at this time. Besides, I know it takes a long time to get publishers to look at your work and I don’t think I’d like to have someone on my back about putting out the next story. I like doing things in my own time.

(D.R.) Can you tell us the author or set of authors that influenced you the most for your particular genre?

(Roxanne) Hunter S. Jones. I started talking to her and had her look at some of my teasers on my blog one day. She told me I really had a talent and should pursue it. She kept on me too and I really like her work! She’s brilliant!

(D.R.) Now keep this answer as tame as you can for me. Why do you write erotic fiction instead of romance stories?

(Roxanne) Romance bores me. The passion of erotica is exciting and I have a dirty mind.

(D.R.) Have you written yourself or anyone close to you into your story?

(Roxanne) The love of my life. I just didn’t use his real name.

(D.R.) It isn’t unheard of for a short story to be the basis for a full movie production. If you were to get a movie deal for Happy Reunion, who would you cast to play the lead roles in the book?

(Roxanne) Daniel Craig and his wife, Rachel Weisz. Rachel Weisz is one of my absolute favorite actresses and she’s stunningly beautiful, and Daniel Craig is extremely sexy.

(D.R.) Are you currently working on any other short stories or a full out novel?

(Roxanne) I’m working on a short story about an abused housewife exacting revenge on her husband, which will be published under my actual initials and my last name. I am also working on a short story about a transvestite show girl for a collection I’m putting together. I have ideas for the other stories I want to add to that.

(D.R.) I know your short story is available in eBook format. Have you taken the steps to have your eBook published in paperback yet?

(Roxanne) No, I have not. The reason for that is because the story itself is only fourteen pages long if that.

(D.R.) Which major retailers are your books currently available in?

(Roxanne) Only Amazon at the moment.

(D.R.) Before we part ways, is there anything else you would like to say for your fans and readers around the world?

(Roxanne) I appreciate every single person who reads my work. Being an indie author isn’t easy and the best thing you can do is to leave reviews.

Also, never give up on anything. Life is what you make it. If you choose to look at the bad perspective of everything, you’re going to be miserable. If you choose to pull the good out of every situation, then you’re truly blessed.

(D.R.) Roxanne, I would like to thank you for sitting down with me today for this exciting and revealing interview. I wish you the best of luck in your writing career and hope readers around the world will enjoy your books for years to come.

Author Interview with Jess Mountifield

Jess

(D.R.) Welcome, Jess Mountifield. It is good to have you here for an interview today and to be able to give readers some insight on you as a person, not just a name on the cover of a book. Will you please tell us a little about yourself, like where you are from and how you started your writing career?

(Jess) Originally I'm from a historic little town called Woodbridge, on the east coast of the UK, but I now live in the Roman built city of Bath. I've probably been writing on and off for most of my life but it wasn't until I'd been in Bath for a few years that I really worked out it was what I wanted to try and do for a career, not just a hobby. I'd tried a few other possible careers and although I did reasonably well, I just didn't mesh with them and enjoy it in quite the way I enjoy sitting down with my characters, a pen and some paper.

(D.R.) I have seen four books that you have authored. Can you tell us a little about those books and where you got the inspiration to write them from?

(Jess) My first two novels, With Proud Humility and Chains of Freedom, came from my love of history and other cultures. One is set in the Caribbean and the other in New Zealand, so I really got to explore their different ways of life and all the things that made those places special.

The other two I've got released stem more from the things I read and watch personally. I love Fantasy and Sci-fi and read and watch a lot in these genres, so it was pretty inevitable that I'd branch into these genres eventually. The Sci-fi is the start of a series set a little bit in the future but not too far, and in the neighbouring city of Bristol and the Fantasy I have out so far is a duo of short stories, called Innocent Hearts, set in the same world. They are the start of a run of short stories I want to publish in the same world. Most of them have come about from me trying to get my head around different parts and races in my fantasy world, leading up to a series later.

(D.R.) Which one of your books is your favorite and how come it stands compared to the other books in your own opinion as the author?

(Jess) I think my favourite is my Sci-Fi, Sherdan's Prophecy. The characters are two of my favourite so far and there's some great dynamics between them. Sherdan is a scientist and wealthy bureaucrat and Anya is a Christian artist. There's a lot of fireworks between the two as the try and work out if science and faith can be aligned or not and exactly what force is dictating the future of the two of them. It's sort of a super power/genetic manipulation meets political thriller meets end of the world prophecy. Lots of interesting and fun topics to explore, coupled with action, romance, science, faith and a lot of things in between. It's in the Sci-fi and Religious categories on Amazon but it's really a genre mash up of lots of things.

(D.R.) Writing for many authors is a way to pass the time or a hobby. Do you write as a hobby or do you write full time as a means to provide an income for you and/or your family?

(Jess) It started out as a hobby but it definitely isn't now. I gave up my job a while back now and get the pleasure of working full time on my writing. It wasn't a tough decision either. There's very little I enjoy more than writing about the characters in my head and what they get up to, getting to earn money from that is an amazing feeling.

(D.R.) Most writers have been influenced by other authors through the years. Can you tell us the author or set of authors that influenced you the most for your particular genre?

(Jess) There's a large number in all sorts of different genres. In terms of my fantasy, most definitely Tolkien, C. S. Lewis and even George R. R. Martin a little plus the author of the Redwall series Brian Jacques. On top of that I think a few writers for TV and film have influenced me, most notably Joss Whedon.

(D.R.) If you could pick one of your books to be made into a movie, which book would you pick? Who do you envision playing the major roles in the movie?

(Jess) Probably my first novel, With Proud Humility. It's got plenty of swashbuckling high seas action. I'd love Sean Bean as my Captain Hayes, although the actor is getting a little too old for the role now, but he's an almost perfect fit for the slightly arrogant sword wielding ship captain, with Anne Hathaway as Marie Woodell and definitely Alan Rickman as my bad guy. That actor just oozes menace when he speaks.

(D.R.) Do you currently have any works in progress? Can you tell us what the book is about and when readers can expect to find it available in ebook or paperback?

(Jess) I've got several works in progress at the moment. Out tomorrow in ebook format is another fantasy short, called Wandering to Belong, about a young girl called Aneira who has been wandering the wilderness of the land for about eight years trying to find somewhere she can call home. Then one day she comes face to face with a fire breathing dragon and almost doesn't live to talk about it.

On top of that I've also got another couple of fantasy shorts on the way and the sequel to Sherdan's Prophecy, which continues about three months after the first left off.

I'm also waiting on one more reviewer for the quote on the back cover to have Sherdan's Prophecy in print so that should be my next print launch, at the moment estimated for May.

(D.R.) Are your books currently available in ebook format and/or in paperback? Where can readers find your books?

Author Interview - Brae Wyckoff, The Orb of Truth

(D.R.) Today I welcome Brae Wyckoff, author of The Orb of Truth, the opportunity to sit down with me and talk about himself, his novel The Orb of Truth, and his works in progress.

(D.R.) Welcome, Brae. It is good to have you here for an interview today and to be able to give readers some insight on you as a person, not just a name on the cover of a book. Will you please tell us a little about yourself, like where you are from, and how you started your writing career?

(Brae) Thank you for having me. I was born and raised in San Diego. I currently live in North County San Diego area. I have been happily married for twenty years now and my wife and I have three children and one grandson. My writing started in 10th grade when my English teacher encouraged me after I submitted a horror based short story. I was hooked ever since then. My actual career in writing started two years ago after I was laid off of work. It has been full steam ahead ever since.

(D.R.) As I was looking at your accomplishments I noticed that The Orb of Truth was voted as the #1 Best Christian SciFi/Fantasy Book. There are some well known examples of fantasy books and series that are based on Christianity, can you tell me a little about The Orb of Truth and what you did to focus the book in a Christian aspect?

(Brae) The Bible has amazing stories and I thought it would be interesting to incorporate my love for Dungeons and Dragons and my Christian faith. I have woven in spiritual elements without being preachy and in your face about turning to Jesus. My story within The Orb of Truth is an epic tale of good vs evil that has captured many reader’s hearts around the world. I don’t shy away from using magic or introducing evil characters in my storyline and I really focused on the characters themselves and the choices that come their way and how they respond to them. I also love to incorporate humor to make it a fun read and adventure. You won’t be disappointed.

(D.R.) Is there a deeper message you are trying to get out to readers when they read The Orb of Truth?

(Brae) For me personally, I struggled with my purpose in life and what I was created to be and do while here on earth. I found this to be true in many if not everyone’s lives so The Orb of Truth really goes after the purpose and destiny in everyone, but based on individual choices much like we have in real life. At the same time I wanted to write something epic with a great heroic ending. My books have a feel good ending even amongst the sacrifices they experience in the story.

(D.R.) For many authors, family is vital in their writing, while others separate their writing careers from their real lives. What does your family think about your books and how do they support you in your writing career.

(Brae) My family is my #1 fans, especially my wife. Without their support, then it would be quite difficult to get this career launched. Success doesn’t happen overnight and it takes an amazing team behind you. My wife works FT in corporate America while I write and also promote other business endeavors we have established and are launching. Once my career really takes off then I plan on going to her office and sweeping her off her feet and taking her out of there…imagine the end of the movie The Officer and the Gentlemen. It will happen.

(D.R.) Have you written any family members or friends into your books in some form or fashion?

(Brae) Oh yes, when dealing or interacting with a writer you are a target. I have used past interactions, funny comments, strange personalities, and more, from my family and friends and from strangers. But most of the characters have a piece of me woven into their DNA.

(D.R.) Can you tell us some more about this/these character/s and do your family members know you put them into your book?

(Brae) Yes, my family is extremely supportive and even helped me on several occasions to give me advice on certain characters and their habits or personalities. It can make for an interesting conversation sometimes.
I have a gruff red-bearded Dwarf named Dulgin. He is one of the heroes and has become a fan favorite. His personality has a lot of me in it, not that I’m mean and grumpy but he has aspects especially with his dialogue or mannerisms. There is a part in the book that my family truly relates to me and that is when he talks about “eggs”. I’m not an egg fan so this little scene is quite funny (at least to me and my family anyway).

(D.R.) Some authors describe having periods of writer’s block and some really struggle through these periods. Did you experience writer’s block while writing The Orb of Truth?

(Brae) The Orb of Truth started twenty years ago with me. I had the story for the most part but I couldn’t figure out the ending so I had the dreaded block for many years and struggled through several re-writes. It was two years ago that I had a divine encounter to say the least and the ending fell into place perfectly. I have not had writers block since and I will never have it again. I wrote the book in six months and I wrote the second book in the same amount of time. I have already started book three and have several other ideas formulating. God is good and he loves to help those in need. A theme in The Orb of Truth is the statement, “It is time.” This has applied to me in so many ways and it truly has been a message from heaven for me and many others.

(D.R.) Every author has their own technique for overcoming writer’s block. How did you manage to overcome this period when you were unable to continue with the story?

(Brae)

(D.R.) I started writing many years ago as a hobby and eventually turned it into a little more when I published my first book. Are you writing as a hobby or are you writing full time to provide an income for you and your family?

(Brae) I am writing FT to provide for my family. Once I take on something, I go all the way. I am extremely professional in all my endeavors while at the same time being personable and approachable by all. I have a mission— sell a million books! I believe in the impossible…

(D.R.) Can you tell us the author or set of authors that influenced you the most for your particular genre?

(Brae) JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis are staples in my genre and I fell in love with their story telling ability. I have been deeply humbled to be placed next to them on several people’s shelves and the amazing reviews comparing me to these greats on Amazon.

(D.R.) If you were to get a movie deal for The Orb of Truth, who would you cast to play the lead roles in the book?

(Brae) This is always an interesting question. I do know that the human fighter called Abawken should be played by Thor, Chris Hemsworth. Jeremy Renner might be a good choice for Bridazak, the main character. I like Anne Hathoway, she could portray the elven mystic, Raina Sheldeen, although I have a close friend who says she is Raina after reading my book (girl power). I’m still working on who should take the gruff red-head dwarf, Dulgin. I’m open to suggestions…

(D.R.) You are currently in the final stages of The Dragon God. Is this book a stand alone or is it a sequel to The Orb of Truth?

(Brae) The Dragon God is the sequel and is part of the Horn King Series. Right now the book is with my editor and we are both going through it line by line to make it the best we can. My family, my critique group of several authors, and my editor have all expressed to me that this next book, The Dragon God, is better than the first. I’m happy to hear that. The Orb of Truth sets the stage and introduces you to the amazing world of Ruauck-El and the characters and is what makes the sequel all that much better. I’m excited and my fans are waiting patiently for the release.

(D.R.) Can you tell us a little more about The Dragon God and what to expect when it is released later this year?

(Brae) The Dragon God has all the characters from the first book plus I introduce some new characters that I think will become fan favorites. There is a particular gnome named Trillius that is the neutral character in the story and he gets himself into some interesting situations throughout the book. Trillius was briefly mentioned in the first book, but now we see him in his glory for the sequel. I gave a short intro to Trillius on my Official Fan Club page on Facebook. Trillius has been well received thus far and I only gave a snippet away.

In this book we will see Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings, along with Dragons, evil Mystics, Kings, Pirates, and a Vampire.

Join the Official Brae Wyckoff Fan Club on Facebook to make sure you hear about the exclusive posts that I only release there.

(D.R.) Do you have any other works in progress and if so, when do you plan to release them to your fans?

(Brae) I am currently writing the third of the series called The Vampire King. It is completely outlined and I’m chipping away at it while balancing marketing efforts for the first book, editing the second, and dealing with speaking engagements and book signings. I’m busy, but it is all good!

I am also working on a short story that revolves around two magical thieves tools named Lester and Ross that are also touching the hearts and the funny bones of my readers. They are the comedy relief. I have a backstory for them and I plan on writing it and getting it on Amazon as a FREE download once it is finished and edited. My hope is to have this done this year also. Wow, I have a lot to do.

(D.R.) I know your books are available in ebook format. Have you taken the steps to have your books published in hardback or paperback yet?

(Brae) The Orb of Truth is available on Amazon in both ebook and paperback. You can also get the paperback at Barnes and Noble. I love to have both versions to meet the needs of everyone. I love a good paperback book and I love to have the ease of an ebook on my phone or kindle.

(D.R.) Which major retailers are your books currently available in?

(Brae) My book will be available soon in some airports and smaller bookstores, but the main force is Amazon as everyone shops there. People can also contact me directly to get an autographed copy mailed to them.

(D.R.) Before we part ways, is there anything else you would like to say for your fans and readers around the world?

(Brae) I am deeply thankful to all my fans and to all the new readers who are jumping into the amazing adventure I have written for them. I have people as young as 12 and old as 90 who have loved the book and can’t wait for the sequel.

I’m accessible on Facebook and love interacting with the fans there. I’m also active on Goodreads and love to connect with everyone.

My favorite thing to ask my fans is which character they like and why, so read the book and let me know who it is you love.

Also, I have a special Vampire contest going on in Facebook land on our event page. My Event Manager, Aileen Aroma, is running this event. You can submit your version of a Vamp for the chance to have the character be written in the 3rd book, The Vampire King, and get an autographed copy when it is released.

We have other contests going on in Facebook and the BIG PRIZE that ends at the end of March, so join today and win prizes…Aileen is incredible and works tirelessly each day to help promote and connect people.

(D.R.) Brae, I would like to thank you for sitting down with me today for this exciting and revealing interview. I wish you the best of luck in your writing career and hope readers around the world will enjoy your books for years to come.

15 Steps to Formatting Your eBook

15 Steps to Formatting Your eBook
by
David Rieckmann

15 Steps to Formatting Your eBook is a simple step by step guide for getting your eBook ready for the publishing process.
Smashwords Purchase Link: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view...

The guide walks you through every step of the process for making text only eBooks. If you want to include pictures, then I would suggest checking the guides from the major eBook publishing companies for specifics on inserting images.

I also did not talk about designing cover art. Cover art should be left to professionals. One of the major factors in marketing and selling your eBook is your cover. (as mentioned in Indie Authors and Books previous blog post - "10 Tips on Self Publishing" http://indieauthorsandbooks.wordpress...) Take the time to pay a cover artist for the cover your book deserves. Many cover artists already know how the cover needs to be formatted for the major eBook publishing companies, so let them do that part of the work so you just have to upload the image.

If you follow the steps in the guide exactly, then you will should never have an issue when uploading to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, or Smashwords.

I wish you the best of luck in your self publishing journey.

Here is a short preview of the Formatting Guide.

Due to blog formatting, the images and text may appear slightly different on the blog than in the eBook version.

Introduction
There are many guides on the internet for formatting your eBook so you can submit it for publishing on many of the many eBook publishing platforms. What I am going to try to cover here are some very basic concepts to help get you going. Some things will not be covered as I am writing this very basic guide for the majority of eBooks.

What will not be covered:
Pictures
Illustrations
Cover Art (will be covered in a later post)
Formatting for print versions

Let’s start with the basics. Formatting for print and Ebook formats vary in different ways. The premise for eBook formatting is that your eBook needs to be converted so that it flows on digital readers. Improper spacing and tabs can create many problems in the flow of your book. Hopefully these steps will help you format to alleviate many common problems.

Don’t worry about formatting for your chapter titles at this point. We will get to them later.

Step One: Turn off AutoCorrect and AutoFormat

Turn off autocorrect before you begin. Leave the spelling and grammar check features on but set them so they only mark the error and you have to manually make the change. When doing section breaks, sometimes word-processors turn those section breaks into page breaks. You do not want the page breaks in your document.

Click the Office symbol at the top left of word.
The drop down menu will open and click Word Options at the bottom of the drop down menu.
Click “Proofing”
Click “AutoCorrect Options...”
Now, turn everything off under the AutoCorrect and AutoFormat tabs.
On the “AutoFormatAsYouType” tab turn everything off except for “Format beginning of list item like the one before it”
On this tab you may elect to leave the “smart quotes” and “fractions” tabs turned on.

Word Options

AutoCorrect Options

Ok, it is time to get started with the meat and potatoes of formatting your eBook.
The first thing you need to do to your eBook is to get rid of any formatting that you already have included in your manuscript.

The way I accomplished this was very simple.

Step Two: Get Rid of the Formatting

Hold the “ctrl” button on your keyboard and press “a”. This will highlight your entire manuscript.
Right click on the highlighted text and select “Paragraph”
Make the following changes to your word document from the “Paragraph” menu.
Alignment: Left
Outline: Body Text
Indentation Left: 0”
Indentation Right: 0”
Indentation Special: First Line (You can elect to not have any indentation but I find it helpful for the first line of every paragraph to be indented.)
Indentation By: 0.3” (Only if using first line indents.)
Spacing Before: 0 pt
Spacing After: 0 pt
Line Spacing: Single
Spacing At: Blank (If you change this it will change your Line Spacing.)
