let it snow...

The Snowman (Harry Hole, #7) by Jo Nesbø I danced around reading this book having finished off Larsson’s Girl series and needed to bask in warmer climes before returning to the snows of Scandinavia, so I’m arriving late to the Nesbo Fan Club Dinner Dance. The construction of this work is what makes it shine; every writer’s dream is to build a work with Snowman’s perfect sense of timing. Nesbo is adept at peppering the story with subtle clues in an attempt to lead the reader into murky waters while performing the same connivery with his well-rounded cast of characters. It’s a fun ride, smartly executed.

when you're a....

Web of the City Web of the City by Harlan Ellison

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Early Ellison works including a novella-of-sorts - will bring back memories of greasers, the 50's and West Side Story without the Sondheim lyrics. Instead of the Jets and the Sharks, there's the Cougars and the Cherokees. The local-hang-soda-shop is run by Pops and the cops are the bad guys everyone is against. Grit is Ellison's forte and while the language of the time doesn't hold water anymore, his ability to capture the essence of it still makes for writing evocative of the time period and worth studying, if not enjoying.
