Coming up for air
Obviously, life has consistently kicked my hind end... and there's a lot back there to kick. And so, because of the hours I keep,I am embarrassed to realize how long it's been since I visited.
As we all know, writing only books is a pipe dream for the majority of word lovers. To make ends meet, we end up working with all kinds of projects...And so I get lost in trying to juggle my own writing with the freelance work I do. When I come up for air and realize, as I have at this moment, that I haven't visited here for far too long, my face burns.
I recently finished "Hissy Fits Will Set You Free." A story with several other stories winding through it... about women from all walks of life, who meet in a support group. One of my favorite activities is to develop characters. Next to that, I love to give them lives... real lives, with real dreams and real pain and real frustrations.
Next month I'm heading north to do book signings and stand-up comedy gigs... it takes a LOT of preparation for these trips... a LOT of material has to be created for a 45-minute comedy skit. Just to talk about it gives me a headache. Actually I don't have any projects right now that can be set aside... my arms are tired from juggling so much. My mind is crispy fried...
Thank you for supporting my work! And now, I believe I will sign off and hold the couch down for a little cat nap!

Floozies Forever?
My efforts to finish "Flamingo Floozies" are still unsuccessful. I am beginning to think that I am dragging my feet on this one simply because I hate to say goodbye to the quirky, bratty characters!
I love Bernie's "job"... she has installed a 900-number in her home, which she refers to as "the dirty phone."
I love Twink's yearning to find her wild side...it's buried somewhere under all that responsible behavior.
And I am really in love with Julip. She's 70 and single, with huge mammory glands which never see a bra. She bounces those untethered boobs all over the place and is known to call anyone "an old shit ass" if they question her motives.
Aw yes... the floozies... I love 'em!

Old truths in a new beginning
Two incredible days! Last evening, I shared my books at a new book store in Cape Coral. And today, I attended the Reader's Festival. I met lots of great women, sold a lot of books and found myself feeling a lot more brave, in regard to how I will hear that little voice in the back of my mind... the voice that repeatedly reminds me that I am in an entirely new place with new readers. And what if these new readers don't "get" me?
The truth is that women love to laugh... and it doesn't matter where I happen to be, there will always be women around me who know exactly what I'm talking about. My books speak to women, directly from my heart.
When I begin to question myself, I have to try harder to remember that truth.

Shipping & handling
Elaine and I have been packaging books today... it's a great feeling, to get books ready to mail.
Lucky for me, Elaine is not only a wonderful editor and a dear friend, she is also a female version of McGuyver.. the chick can suddenly whip up a regular masterpiece with a few cardboard scraps and some tape.
At the same time, though, her many skills serve as reminders that I can actually hurt myself with a pair of dull scissors and at least one good intention wrapped up in a bad idea.
It definitely takes a team of two to pull off what we do. She's the brain... and I'm good for a great curse word or two, when necessary.

Words are magic
When I was a little girl, I constantly wrote little stories about all kinds of things. Today, I love to write for the same reasons I loved it a million years ago... I have a movie in my mind and through words, I can be anywhere with anyone, doing anything I can dream up.
That might just be why the female characters in my books are constantly wreaking havoc. They always get to do what the rest of us only dream of doing...
Words are magic. Don't ever let anyone tell you any different.

Too much imagination
Here's the problem with how much I fall in love with my characters... I almost forget they aren't real people!
While I work, with them chattering incessantly in my head, I sometimes just expect to just suddenly look up from the keyboard and see them fluttering around like little fairies, lounging on my desk and fussing with each other.
When it doesn't happen, it's pretty sad and disappointing, actually.

Shoulda been a mermaid
I don't think there's another person in the world who loves the beach more than me. I just recently finished writing a fun "beach read" called Beach Rx. And I am working on another one, "Flamingo Floozies." I always envision women digging their toes in the sand and laughing their faces off in the sun as they enjoy these books.
Writing is always a gift for me. But these two pieces have reminded me of what I have always known about myself.. for some reason, being at the beach soothes me... no matter what awful stuff might be going on in my life, I feel centered there. I have made all of my major life decisions while floating on a raft in the ocean. On sad days or frustrating days, I get in my car and drive to the beach to soak up the sun or to just enjoy an awesome sunset... and then everything in my world is more explainable.
I'm thinking I would have made a great mermaid!
