Summer 2022 Game Showcases Round 2
So Nintendo finally announced the next Nintendo Direct, but since we have another cluster of game showcases, I decided to consider this separate from the Not-E3 events instead of continuing them.
(It would be confusing to call this Not-E3 Round 2, though.)
Nintendo announced a Nintendo Direct Mini for tomorrow at 6 AM PT / 9 AM ET. It is a Partner Showcase about upcoming third-party games.
So… not exactly the general Direct we were hoping for, but Partner Showcases can still include great announcements. (In retrospect, maybe I should have included Sony’s third-party showcase as part of Not-E3 after all.) I hope Bayonetta 3 is considered to be third-party, since a release date is still one of the main things I want announced.
Meanwhile, I will once again hope for Ace Attorney news!
The next day, on June 29, Square Enix is holding a broadcast about Star Ocean: The Divine Force at 4 AM PT / 7 AM ET, but I think will only be in Japanese, so I’ll wait until the details are translated.
Then when the weekend comes, Anime Expo 2022 begins. So far, three video game companies have announced Anime Expo 2022 showcases. Bandai Namco’s will be on July 1 at 8:30 PM PT / 11:30 PM ET, Aksys Games has a showcase on July 2 at 2:45 PM PT / 5:45 PM ET, and Spike Chunsoft follows on July 2 at 5:45 PM PT / 8:45 PM ET.
All of those could potentially have exciting news, so I’m looking forward to them!
Which of these upcoming events are you most interested in? What announcements do you hope to see?

Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse English Release Date
It didn’t quite make the winter release window that was announced last year, but Muv-Luv Alternative Total Eclipse Remastered is almost here!
Total Eclipse will be out in English for the first time on July 20. The release date was announced yesterday.
It is a Muv-Luv spin-off set during the events of Alternative that follows a test pilot named Yuuya who is assigned to a top-secret project and deals with conflicts with his new team members as well as international intrigue.
This remastered version is only the main story of Total Eclipse and does not include “Burning of the Imperial Capital,” or Teito Moyu, a prequel story that was part of the original Total Eclipse release.
However, all the way back in 2016, the Muv-Luv localization Kickstarter campaign announced that the extra funds would go toward translating Teito Moyu as well as another project. Here’s hoping those plans haven’t changed!
I’ve enjoyed the previous Muv-Luv releases, so I’m looking forward to Total Eclipse and whatever else they have in store for the future.

FFXVI Confirms AI-Controlled Party Members, No Open World, and More
The awaited Final Fantasy XVI interviews have appeared and provided us with a lot of interesting new details and answers to questions we’ve had ever since the previous trailer.
Probably the most important information comes from the interview with IGN, in which Naoki Yoshida addressed the question of party members.
Final Fantasy XVI will have AI-controlled party members who “participate in battle, as well as trade banter with Clive.”
So while it sounds like there won’t be other controllable characters, fans who were mainly concerned about the lack of a party for story reasons should be pleased to know Clive won’t be a solo adventurer after all.
We’ve already speculated that Benedikta and Hugo might be party members, but another possibility is the puppy shown in the first trailer. According to Yoshida, the puppy is “more wolf than dog” and is named Torgal. He wouldn’t say if Torgal is a party member or not but said we’ll have to “wait and see.”
Curiously, a detail from the interview with Famitsu, translated here, is that you will have a “buddy” in every battle with you who can be issued commands. Right now, Torgal seems to be the best candidate for that role.
One more important answer from IGN’s interview is that Final Fantasy XVI is not open world. Instead it has an “area-based game design,” which for me brings to mind the sort of games I prefer, ones that aren’t fully open but still have large areas to explore.
Now, some story details came from GameSpot’s interview, which revealed that Final Fantasy XVI will follow Clive in his teens, in his 20s, and in his 30s. Due to these time skips, details about the world will be revealed through side quests and an in-game compendium. Final Fantasy XVI will be “a complete experience so that no other tertiary content will be required to enjoy or understand it.”
This interview also touched upon the M rating, which Yoshida said is basically so that they can explore mature themes without feeling limited.
Meanwhile, the interview with Game Informer revealed that the one-on-one Eikon battles we saw in the trailer will actually be quite unique, with each of these battles having its own system.
As examples, Yoshida suggested one Eikon versus Eikon battle might be “reminiscent of a 3D shooter,” while another could be “like a pro wrestling match,” and a third might “transform an entire area into a battlefield.” These battles all have their own UI, which was hidden in the trailer to avoid spoilers. So the Eikon battles sound like they might be quite interesting and unexpected.
The Game Informer interview also mentioned that a third trailer will be out this fall.
Finally, the PlayStation Blog interview revealed that the game is “fully playable from start to finish” and the remaining time is required for voiceovers, playtesting, and debugging.
There is a lot of information spread across all these interviews, and I didn’t cover it all, only the pieces that stood out to me the most. I’m happy to know we’ll have at least an AI-controlled party and that it isn’t an open world game. What do you think about the latest Final Fantasy XVI details?
(Meanwhile, there was a Nintendo Direct today focused on Xenoblade Chronicles 3, which I didn’t watch since I don’t want to see too much of the game ahead of time, but I did see that it’ll get a story expansion DLC like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 did. If it’s as good as Torna, that’s fantastic news!)

Bandai Namco Celebrates .hack’s 20th Anniversary
Today is the 20th anniversary of the .hack series, which most recently saw its second trilogy remastered as .hack//GU Last Record.
Since Bandai Namco is celebrating the anniersary, fans were hoping it might include a game announcement, either a collection of the original quadrilogy or an all-new title.
So far, however, that hasn’t happened. Bandai Namco released a video celebrating the series with a 20th Anniversary book, an art compendium, a commemorative soundtrack CD, and digital publications that will be available in Japan.
They also announced a 20th Anniversary exhibit that will be held from August 9-28.
That doesn’t necessarily mean we’re out of luck for a new game announcement, though.
As reported by Gematsu, Bandai Namco trademarked the name “Last Recollection” back in April. Due to the similarity with the title Last Recode, there’s some speculation Last Recollection will be a collection of the first four games.
.hack//GU Last Recode also had a line in Vol. 4 (an epilogue story added for the collection) that could have been a tease for a future .hack game, although it’s been several years now since Last Recode came out.
Anyway, since they’re opening the exhibit in August, it doesn’t sound like they consider today to be the conclusion of the anniversary celebration. Maybe in the weeks ahead, we’ll hear about a new .hack title after all. What do you think?

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Remaster, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and More!
Yesterday evening, Square Enix held a Final Fantasy VII anniversary celebration broadcast, and after the way they hyped it up as a must-see event, I was fully expecting Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 to be announced.
Well, we got that and more!
They began with the announcement that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is now on Steam. However, they did so with a trailer full of scenes from the ending, so I suggest you don’t watch the trailer if you haven’t played the game.
Intergrade is the newer version that includes the DLC episode starring Yuffie, which I haven’t played yet since it never came out for the PS4. Eventually I’ll get Intergrade so I can play the DLC.
Anyway, they then showed off some merchandise and then showed off their mobile games. I couldn’t care less about the battle royale mobile game First Soldier, but I remain extremely interested in Ever Crisis, just like I was when it was announced.
I was half-hoping they would announce Ever Crisis is coming to other platforms, but it’s still a mobile game. A closed beta will be held later this year. I just hope its mobile game elements (apparently interviews last year confirmed it would have loot boxes) aren’t too intrusive.
As an episodic game that covers the entire compilation with ATB combat, Ever Crisis seems like the answer for people who wanted a more straightforward remake, so I really hope it’s good.
After the mobile games, they then announced Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion, a remaster of the Final Fantasy VII prequel game Crisis Core. Some places have referred to it as a remake, but the official press release about all of these announcements called it a remaster, so I did the same.
I always wanted to play Crisis Core, but since I don’t have a PSP and there’s no digital version, I wasn’t able to. I’m thrilled to finally be able to play it, and it’s a multiplatform release, too! Crisis Core will be out this winter.
That announcement was leaked ahead of time, which took away from the surprise, but it was exciting to see it confirmed.
Finally, they closed with the news everyone was waiting for, the official announcement of Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2… or rather, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, as it’s actually titled, which I’m sure will cause absolutely no confusion whatsoever.
It looks beautiful. Not only that, but it looks like the Nibelheim flashback is still playable, which is the one thing I was hoping for confirmation of. I hope Sephiroth still fights alongside you in combat to do a ridiculous amount of damage.
Now, this trailer has caused a divide among fans yet again. Some have taken the trailer as a clear sign that Square Enix is doubling down on making significant changes to the story, but I didn’t take that away from it at all. In fact, I’ll admit that when the trailer asked, “What is fact and what is fiction?” my first thought was that my JENOVA theory is true, which was probably me jumping to conclusions too.
After listening to it again, the dialogue in the trailer actually fits events from the original game, so I don’t think this trailer told us anything about how much they’re changing the story.
Anyway, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be out “next winter” for the PS5. Since Crisis Core was announced for “this winter,” that probably means late 2022/early 2023 while Rebirth will follow in late 2023/early 2024. The confusion around this was increased, however, by the producer saying in a message to fans that it will be “approximately three years after the original Final Fantasy VII Remake released in April 2020.”
It’s probably still late 2023 at best, but we’ll see. I assume they don’t want it to be too close to Final Fantasy XVI’s summer 2023 release window. And it looks like now I have a deadline by which I need to get a PS5…
They also confirmed that this incarnation of Final Fantasy VII will be a trilogy, and development of the third game has already begun.
All in all, the Final Fantasy VII anniversary broadcast was well worth the hype! I’m excited for Crisis Core, cautiously optimistic about Ever Crisis, and can’t wait to see more about Rebirth. Meanwhile, Capcom held its Dragon’s Dogma stream at the same time and confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is in development. Since that’s all they said about it, I’m not sure why they didn’t include the announcement in their showcase.
So, what did you think about the Final Fantasy VII announcements? What are your hopes and fears for Rebirth? (For that matter, maybe you’d rather talk about Dragon’s Dogma 2, so feel free!)

New Kingdom Hearts IV Details from Interviews
It’s still hard to believe that Kingdom Hearts IV was announced just a few months ago, but now we have some additional details thanks to new interviews with Nomura.
In a recent interview from Game Informer, Nomura revealed several interesting things about the series and Kingdom Hearts IV in particular, including that Sora will always be the lead for numbered titles.
The part of the interview that stands out to me the most is what Nomura had to say about Quadratum. Nomura described Quadratum as “the initial base” and said “you spend time there and then go to different worlds and then go back there.” So it sounds like Quadratum will function as a hub world.
I love hub areas in games, so I like the sound of that. He also said we’ll get to see Sora’s “day-to-day routines” due to this approach in Quadratum, which is interesting.
(I still want a remake of 358/2 Days with the castle as a proper hub.)
Some other highlights are that the new enemy “has a lot to do with” the Foretellers, and that Nomura is trying to find a balance when it comes to including Final Fantasy characters. As someone who never thought the Final Fantasy characters were that important to the story, I don’t mind that, although I know a lot of people were displeased by their initial exclusion from Kingdom Hearts III.
Meanwhile, an extended interview with Nomura was also published by Famitsu, and translated by KH Insider.
One interesting thing to come from this interview is that when asked about the woman from the end of Melody of Memory, Nomura said it’s a secret as to whether she’ll appear in the game or not, but “there was a time when I wasn’t sure whether I would choose KHIV or VERUM REX as my next project. However, she is a central VERUM REX character.”
That sounds to me like we’ll probably get Verum Rex as its own game someday.
Nomura also talked about how Akiko Ishibashi, who worked on NEO: The World Ends With You, has joined the writing team for Kingdom Hearts IV. Meanwhile, Ruiko Fukazawa, who previously worked on FFXIV: Heavensward, is writing the scenario for the new mobile game Missing Link.
I can’t wait to see where they go with Kingdom Hearts IV, especially now that we know a little more about it. What do you think about the latest Kingdom Hearts IV interviews?

Xbox Games Showcase 2022 Extended
The last Not-E3 showcase for now was Capcom’s. Now, I was initially thrilled when I saw Capcom had announced its own showcase, until I saw the description that said it would be about previously announced games. Nevertheless, other reports said there might be an announcement or two.
I tried not to hope, but I admit, I gave in and started hoping when I tuned in early and saw them advertising Ace Attorney during the countdown ahead of the showcase. Not only that, but the into once they began showed silhouettes of major Capcom characters, including Phoenix Wright!
However, there was no Ace Attorney news of any kind, so the best thing I can say is that at least they consider it important.
They began by featuring Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the upcoming Monster Hunter expansion.
After that, they showed some trailers for Street Fighter 6, the Capcom Fighting Collection, and Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium.
The next major feature was Exoprimal, that action game about fighting dinosaurs. It’s not my sort of game, but I’m sure players interested in it appreciate how much time was spent on it.
Then they began talking about Dragon’s Dogma. Let me explain the situation here. I have never played Dragon’s Dogma, but I know its fans are hoping for a sequel. The game is now celebrating its 10th anniversary, and rumors of a Dragon’s Dogma 2 abound. Many people thought it would be announced tonight.
So when Dragon’s Dogma took center stage tonight, only for the announcement to be about a “10 Years of Dragon’s Dogma” video… well, we Ace Attorney fans might be disappointed, but at least we weren’t hurt like Dragon’s Dogma fans were hurt tonight.
Anyway, there was one thing I wanted to see from Capcom tonight besides Ace Attorney, and that was the Resident Evil Village DLC they announced last year. And yes, they showed it! …In a video that showed major scenes from the end of Village, so… maybe don’t watch if you’re trying to avoid spoilers.
Shadows of Rose is the story DLC, and the part I’m most interested in. I had significant concerns about where they might take the series after Village, but the DLC trailer has be curious. It looks like they could have some interesting things in store.
The DLC also includes new content for the Mercenaries mode, and a third-person view option. It will be out on October 28.
The multiplayer game Re:Verse will launch at the same time, but I don’t particularly care about that.
Finally, they showed the trailer for the Resident Evil 4 remake again and gave a few more details. Strangely, they kept referring to the enemies as “ganado” for the plural, even though I’m sure Ganados was the plural in the original. They also have apparently changed them to make them scarier, although they didn’t go into detail.
Resident Evil 7, RE2make, and RE3make are all coming to next-gen consoles, and that was the end of the showcase.
My Ace Attorney heart weeps, but at least I have Shadows of Rose. Dragon’s Dogma fans, you have my sympathies and I hope that video ends in a sequel announcement for you.

All right, the second showcase today was the PC Gaming Show, and this time I decided to just cover the games that stood out to me the most instead of going through each and every one (especially since the showcase lasted two hours).
They actually started we a game that was shown last year and looks as interesting now as it did then: Soulstice.
They also showed an interesting tactical game called Tactical Breach Wizards, which I wasn’t too interested in at first until I noticed that it seems to have a fair amount of dialogue and some humor mixed in.
A fair amount of time was also devoted to a game called The Invincible, which is based on a sci-fi novel I’m not familiar with. It seems to be focused on exploration and narrative, and it looks like it could be good.
The Alters is a game about working with alternate versions of yourself, which is an interesting premise, and a new horror game called Decarnation looks particularly creepy.
Speaking of creepy, there was a new trailer for the System Shock remake, another look at Immortality, and another trailer for Scorn, which went into more detail about the game. Scorn won’t have any dialogue, making use of its atmosphere and environment instead.
Ahead of that, there was also an announcement for a tactical RPG called Demonschool. I’m not sold on it yet, but I’ll keep my eye on it.
Deliver Us Mars was also shown, which I’m looking forward to since I enjoyed their previous game, Deliver Us the Moon.
Gloomwood also looks like an interesting game, as does the unusually-titled Backfirewall_, a puzzle game about an old operating system that doesn’t want to be updated.
No big surprises came from the PC Gaming Show, but these were the highlights for me. Which games from this presentation stood out the most to you?

Microsoft held its showcase today, one of the few major shows being held. They started with Redfall, that co-op vampire shooter that was announced a while back, although I’m not particularly interested in it. The next game was a big surprise, though: a trailer for the long-awaited Hollow Knight: Silksong.
No release date, but it looks great. There’s also a good chance it’ll be out within the next 12 months, since they said later on that every game in the showcase would be. Maybe I’ll play the first Hollow Knight by then.
They showed a strange game called High On Life, and then Riot Games had a short segment about bringing their games to Game Pass. Then we got to see A Plague Tale: Requiem.
As someone who isn’t a racing game fan, I thought they devoted a bit too much time for Forza Motorsport, but I’m sure Forza fans were happy. They also showed new content for Microsoft Flight Simulator, including a new update bringing the Pelican from Halo to the game.
Overwatch 2 got a new trailer, they announced a strategy game called Ara: History Untold, and then expansions were revealed for Elder Scrolls Online and Fallout 76.
Back to racing, Forza Horizon 5 is getting Hot Wheels content.
The next game was Ark 2, and then they showed a new trailer for Scorn, a creepy-looking horror game.
Flintlock: Siege of Dawn is an open world RPG, Minecraft Legends is a spin-off described as a strategy action game, Lightyear Frontier is an open world farming game in space (combining this Not-E3’s trends of farming games and space games), and Gunfire Reborn is a shooter with cute animals (and apparently is already out on other platforms), but it was the game after that which caught my attention.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a spooky Metroidvania, and I was hooked by the atmosphere even before I saw the gameplay. I will definitely have my eye on this one.
As Dusk Falls was shown again, as well as Naraka: Bladepoint (already out but now coming to consoles), and then a narrative game called Pantiment.
Then they showed Grounded, which I thought was already out, but I guess that must have been Early Access. The full game is coming out now.
The next announcement was Ereban: Shadow Legacy, a stealth action game.
Diablo IV got a new trailer to announce its Necromancer class, which I admit was a pretty cool trailer even though I’m not interested in Diablo.
New content was also announced for Sea of Thieves.
Another new announcement was up next, a game called Ravenlok that might be the one I’m most interested in from this show. It looks like some sort of fairytale action game, and it’s beautiful.
The developers of Limbo and Inside announced their next game, Cocoon, a top-down puzzle game.
Next was a new game from Team Ninja, which at first I thought might related to Nioh, but actually it’s an action fantasy game called Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. I want more details about this one. The setting looks very cool, so I want to learn more about the gameplay.
Then came a shocking announcement… well, actually one I saw rumored but dismissed because it seemed too unlikely… Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are coming to Xbox and PC. The first will be Persona 5 Royal on October 21.
This probably means my hopes of a Persona 3 remake combining the best of both versions won’t come true, but it’s still a nice surprise. Although it’s rather strange that P3 and P4 are coming to Xbox platforms ahead of modern PlayStation platforms. Sometimes it feels like Atlus picks platforms by drawing them from a hat.
Anyway, Kojima appeared to announce that he’s working with Microsoft on a game, but he didn’t say what it is except that it’s a “never-before-seen concept” and something he’s always wanted to make. So that should be interesting.
Finally, after mentioning it earlier in the show, they closed with an extended look at Starfield. I may be one of the few people not interested in Starfield, but at least there were some other cool announcements at this show! What game are you most interested in from the Xbox and Bethesda showcase?

After the previous two showcases today, one more remained: the Future Games Show.
They began with a game called Outpost, a horror game called Luto, and another look at Nightingale, which was shown the other day, and then a racing game called Tray Racers.
The publisher Kwalee then showed off four games, Wildmender, Die by the Blade, Scathe, and Robobeat.
Morbid Metal was next, then Turbo Golf Racing, yet another look at American Arcadia, Alaskan Truck Simulator, and then an interesting puzzle game called The Entropy Centre, which looks very Portal-inspired.
Then they went through a brief montage of games from Ukrainian developers: Puzzles for Clef (which was also in the Wholesome Direct), Zero Losses, and intriguing noir mystery game called This Rain Will Never End, Farlanders, and Through the Nightmares.
The next games were Lost in Play, Brewmaster, Bramble: The Mountain King (which I remember from a previous year), and a mob-themed game called Enemy of the State.
Then they visited the “virtual show floor” to look at Tarnishing of Juxtia, ORX, A Twisted Tale, Power Chord, Reptilian Rising, Potion Permit, Melatonin (the last two of which we saw earlier today as well), Once Upon a Jester, and Bail or Jail.
Back to the regular presentation style, they announced Sunday Gold, Do Not Open, and Bright Memory Infinite, and then an extremely cool-looking horror Metroidvania called The Last Faith, which is probably the most interesting game I’ve seen all day.
Definitely have my eyes on that one.
Team17 featured next, with Thymesia (also quite cool), Autopsy Simulator (I’m not saying I’m obsessed with The Great Ace Attorney, but my first thought was, “Here’s a game for Maria”), The Unliving, Sunday Gold even though it was just shown earlier in this same showcase, Sweet Transit, Bator (which we saw at another showcase), The Knight Witch, and Killer Frequency.
After those, they showed a game called Tinykin, Serial Cleaners, and AirportSIM.
They love montages, so we got another montage: Fueled Up, Dinkum, Multiversus, Mythbusters: The Game, Shadows of Doubt, Last Time I Saw You, Instinction, and Beyond Sunset.
Phonopolis, Being and Becoming, and Arctic Awakening were the next games shown. I actually played a demo of Arctic Awakening recently, although I ran into some trouble with bugs.
Next came F1 Manager 22, a brawler called Divine Knockout, and a platformer called Planet of Lana.
Then they announced that Deadly Premonition 2 is coming to Steam, which would have been a big surprise if it hadn’t already been teased a couple days ago. I have yet to play Deadly Premonition 2 to compare it to the first game.
We got another look at Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, and then Palworld, which you might remember as a bright and colorful Pokémon-esque game where your monsters have guns. Very weird.
Finally, they concluded with a trailer for a horror game called Ill.
That’s the last of the showcases for today, but two more will take place tomorrow! Which games did you enjoy the most from this year’s Future Games Show?
