Our First Glimpse of Yakuza 8
We’ve known for a while now that Yakuza 8 is in development, but now we got our first look at it.
Not a trailer, not official screenshots… but rather, off-screen footage during a tour of RGG Studio.
MMA fighter Mikuru Asakura will appear in Yakuza 8, and he posted a video about getting the part in the game that includes a studio tour.
(People have been referring to this as a leak, but it’s clearly not a leak; this is an intentional tease.)
During the tour, they briefly show work being done on a new scene for Yakuza 8 that provides glimpses of Ichiban, Adachi, and Nanba. This part occurs at around 10:26 in the video.
Notably, Ichiban has a new hairstyle here, although when you see him from behind, you can tell it’s not short hair but rather a ponytail. Judging by this fan’s translation of the subtitles, it looks as though Adachi and Nanba have come looking for Ichiban, who is now using his Hero’s Bat to hang clothes on.
I haven’t played Yakuza 7 yet, but I’m working on it. I’m currently on the first part of Yakuza 5.
According to Gematsu, a new city will appear in Yakuza 8 and RGG Studio also has a separate title currently in development. I wonder if that could be one of the “unannounced titles” mentioned last November.
Still not the big reveal we’ve been waiting for, but it’s nice to see a tease of Yakuza 8 in development nevertheless. Are you looking forward to Yakuza 8?

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Is My Favorite Pokémon Game Since Gen 5
Over the weekend, I finally finished my playthrough of Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
Legends: Arceus is a very different sort of Pokémon game compared to the main series.
The biggest difference is probably the game’s structure. Instead of taking a journey across the region to challenge other Trainers, you have a city that serves as a hub area, from which you travel to large zones to catch Pokémon.
Catching Pokémon is the major focus here, much more so than in past Pokémon games. You can now catch Pokémon without getting into a battle first, by throwing Pokéballs at them on the field.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. Sneaking up on Pokémon to have an advantage, cautiously approaching Pokémon that are prone to running, seeing if I could avoid a battle… it ended up being a big part of the experience.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is not open world (and was never marketed as such), but instead has several large regions unlocked over the course of the game. You’ll want to explore them to find Pokémon and also gather materials to use for crafting.
I’m not sure I’d say exploration is a major focus, since there isn’t a lot to do beyond finding new groups of Pokémon, but I had fun with it.
Now, this is set in an era when most people living in Hisui don’t understand Pokémon. Many are even afraid of them. You’re basically creating the world’s first Pokédex. Pokédex entries aren’t considered complete until you’ve finished a number of tasks with that Pokémon, such as catching them, seeing them perform certain moves, and defeating them with certain move types.
Not only does this system mean you’ll probably catch a lot more Pokémon than usual, it also encourages you to rotate different Pokémon into your team much more often.
Combat is still a big part of the game, but it’s also different than in previous games. Turn order is decided ahead of time based on speed, and you can change it depending on the move you pick and whether you use the new Strong and Agile stances. This means you can end up attacking twice in a row, or sacrificing a turn later on in exchange for a more powerful move now.
I also noticed that level seemed to matter a lot less than in previous games. In past Pokémon games, having a level advantage means you can steamroll past just about anything, but that wasn’t the case here.
Between that and the encouragement to rotate your team, as well as some other changes, I found Pokémon Legends: Arceus to be the most challenging Pokémon game I’ve played in a long time. I went into battles – especially battles against other Trainers, which are much less common but still occur – knowing that I might run into trouble.
(And because of these changes, I didn’t mind that your current team all gets experience from battles whether they participate or not!)
Now, let’s talk about the story. It doesn’t have a huge emphasis on story, but I’d say it’s stronger than in early Pokémon games. It’s interesting enough and has some memorable moments, and it doesn’t get in the way constantly like in Sun and Moon.
Click for Pokémon Legends: Arceus spoilersAnd maybe I’ll never get the Distortion World in modern graphics, but at least I got to be terrorized by Giratina clawing his way into reality once again.(I’d pay for Distortion World DLC, though.)
There are also several small changes to streamline the experience, like being able to change your Pokémon’s moves or nickname from the menu. Summoning Pokémon separate from your team for field skills also makes a return, although here it includes things like scaling mountains and sniffing out buried items.
It’s not a perfect game; there are a few things I found annoying. You have limited inventory space and have to pay to expand it one item slot at a time, so you have to regularly put items into your storage box. Crafting materials can be used from the storage box, so I wish you could just send them there automatically. There are also certain Pokémon that only appear in the dimensional rifts that spawn somewhat rarely, which added unnecessary tedium to the final stretch of catching them all.
Yes, I caught all the Pokémon in Hisui, something I’ve only done once before, when I completed the regional Pokédex in Pokémon White.
After the main story credits roll, there are numerous post-game story quests that continue the main story and are absolutely worth doing, and then after that it’s simply a matter of completing the Pokédex. I didn’t complete all the entries, but I did catch all the Pokémon, and the payoff for that was worth it.
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a very different Pokémon game in a lot of ways, but I really enjoyed it. It disappoints me even more now that Scarlet and Violet opted for a direction I don’t care for, because Legends: Arceus is the most fun I’ve had with a Pokémon game since Gen 5. If they make another Legends game with this style, I’d absolutely get it.

Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 Officially Revealed
Although I haven’t played Fuga: Melodies of Steel yet, it’s one I’ve meant to check out for a while now, a turn-based RPG set in the Little Tail Bronx universe.
Well, CyberConnect 2 has now officially revealed the sequel.
This isn’t actually the first time it’s been mentioned. Back in March, they announced that they would be making Fuga: Melodies of Steel 2 and eventually Fuga: Melodies of Steel 3.
The news surprised me, since I heard it sold poorly. It seems that CyberConnect 2 really loves the series and will continue to make them on their own, while working on licensed games for other companies.
There aren’t any details about the second game yet, but the website is now open. Information will come on July 28, possibly during the Fuga: Melodies of Steel anniversary broadcast.
A demo for the first game is available now as well. The Fuga: Melodies of Steel demo lets you play up to Chapter 3 and transfer your progress to the full game, so it sounds like a great way to give Fuga a try.
Have you played Fuga: Melodies of Steel?

Bayonetta 3 Releases October 28, New Trailer, Special Edition Revealed
After Bayonetta 3 finally resurfaced last September with a 2022 release window, we now have a new trailer and a specific release date.
Bayonetta 3 will be out on October 28.
In addition to the standard edition, they also revealed the Trinity Masquerade Edition, which includes a 200-page artbook and a panoramic artwork made up of all three Bayonetta covers.
According to the press release, it will be available at “select retailers and the My Nintendo Store.” After enduring the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Special Edition preorders, I was very happy to read the words “select retailers.”
The first Bayonetta is also getting a limited standalone physical release on September 30, since previously it was only packaged with Bayonetta 2 or available digitally.
Now let’s take a look at the new Bayonetta 3 trailer (which I’d embed here, but it can only be viewed on Youtube).
After the previous trailer, I was a little concerned that the new gameplay elements might make the game feel too slow. Well, this trailer reassured me. The part where you directly control the demons still looks slower than the rest, but everything else looks as fast-spaced and smooth as ever.
The mysterious silhouetted character from the previous trailer is now officially revealed as a new playable character called Viola. Theories about her identity are still running rampant, however, especially since Luka seems to recognize her.
This trailer also confirms there are multiple worlds/timelines/universes in Bayonetta 3, including a character Nintendo strongly implied is an alternate Bayonetta.
The story description in the press release says “the unstoppable Umbra Witch must join forces with some familiar faces, the mysterious Viola and a multitude of other Bayonettas to stop human-made Homunculi from wreaking havoc” and that you’ll “meet a veritable coven of Bayonettas, each more fabulous than the last, while fighting through the streets of Tokyo, the mountains of China and beyond!”
In short, Bayonetta 3’s story sounds like it’ll be a crazy time.
Oh, and PlatinumGames also revealed “Naive Angel Mode,” aka the mode you turn on if you think someone might walk in and see you playing (or if you just want to avoid nudity). As shown in their comparison video, this essentially keeps Bayonetta’s clothes on during her special attacks and transformations.
(A few people are upset about this option existing for some reason, but most agree it’s great to have options.)
I’m so excited for Bayonetta 3, and I’m thrilled that we have a release date! I wish it wasn’t coming out right after Star Ocean (and the third Yomawari, which just got an October 25 release date), but it seems this will be another one of those years where the upcoming months are packed with excellent games!
What do you think of the new Bayonetta 3 trailer?

Dragon Quest Treasures Story and World Details
One game we’ve discussed a few times now, most recently after the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase, is the upcoming Dragon Quest spin-off Dragon Quest Treasures.
It’s coming out in December, but we still hardly know anything about it.
The official Japanese website was recently updated with new details about the main characters and the story and world, and Gematsu translated these new details here.
Dragon Quest Treasures follows Erik and Mia, who are pulled into the world of Draconia where they begin searching for treasure. This world is inhabited by monsters, and they gain the ability to communicate with monsters thanks to something called the Dragon’s Dagger.
Erik and Mia are also joined by a cat spirit and a pig spirit, who partner with them. It goes on to say you can press a button to switch between Erik and Mia, who share the same level.
Putting that together with what we saw in the Nintendo Direct trailer, it sounds like you’ll control one human character directly while three monsters join you in your party. From the little bits of combat shown in the trailer, though, I’m not sure if that means there’s a meaningful difference between playing as Erik or Mia or if they’re functionally the same.
I’m most curious about what the gameplay loop is like, since it has such a focus on treasure-hunting. The story details revealed here don’t give much of an indication of what the overall goal is, either.
Now, Dragon Quest Treasures has been described by many people as being a successor to the Dragon Quest Monsters games, but back when Treasures was first announced, they said a new Dragon Quest Monsters game would be announced in the future. I’m looking forward to that.
I feel like I don’t have a solid grasp on what Dragon Quest Treasures is like yet, but it does look worth keeping an eye on. What do you think of Dragon Quest Treasures so far?

Crisis Core Remaster Will Remain Faithful, Rebirth Won’t Cut Content
Several new interviews have come out about the Crisis Core remaster and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, which were officially announced last month.
Since their announcement, there has been much speculation on how Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core Reunion might tie into the remake and how much Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will diverge from the original.
These new interviews shed some more light on the matter.
Gematsu has a nice round-up of the key information, as well as links to the individual interviews.
Although they’re officially referring to Crisis Core as a remaster, it sounds like they’ve done quite a lot. The assets have been replaced, combat has been adjusted to make it smoother, with combos and shortcuts, and the camera can be freely controlled.
However, when it comes to the story, it is a “faithful reproduction” of the original Crisis Core, and “no new story has been added as a result of Final Fantasy VII Remake.”
Fans have interpreted this in many ways (including some who are convinced they’re lying).
Now let’s talk about what the interviews covered regarding Rebirth. First, their rationale for calling it Rebirth instead of Remake 2 is that… calling it Remake 2 might make fans think there will be a 3, 4, 5, etc. They also want the title to give the impression that you can play Rebirth without having played Remake.
Okay… I don’t even know what to do with that first part, but this is the same company that picked the title Bravely Default 2 to make sure fans wouldn’t think it was a direct sequel…
The second part of that is surprising, though. Apparently they believe the story in Rebirth can be enjoyed on its own without the context from Remake. (Then again, companies tend to insist you can start with the newest entry no matter how reliant it is on its predecessors.)
Rebirth will be massive and vast, but they haven’t revealed whether or not it will be open world yet. That will be part of the next batch of information about the game.
More importantly, they assured fans that the trilogy will not trim down the story. Some of the progression is different, and “the order in which you visit some places may change,” but their policy is to not cut content. It will also contain new mysteries, but they’ve tried to avoid deviating from the original, which is… interesting.
That comment in particular has led to a new wave of arguments over whether this remake is telling a completely new story or if it is still following the original’s plot.
I’m curious about where they’re going with this. I’m also looking forward to the next time they release information about Rebirth, since it sounds like it’ll deal with the world. I’d prefer for Rebirth not to be open world, but having large zones to explore would be nice to see.
What do you think about the latest Crisis Core and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth interviews?

God of War Ragnarok Launches November 9
One most-anticipated games of the year has a release date at last!
God of War Ragnarok will be out on November 9.
I’d started to worry it might be pushed to next year, but it’ll be out in 2022 after all, in what is becoming an increasingly packed second half of the year for me.
(This puts it right around Harvestella and Valkyrie Elysium.)
Along with the release date news, they also announced the various special editions.
Now, since this is one of my most-anticipated games, I was interested in the contents of the Collector’s Edition. However, both the Collector’s Edition and the even bigger Jotnar Edition don’t contain physical copies of the game. They come with a steelbook case, but no disc, only a download code for the game.
The rest of the stuff in those editions is tempting, but I like having a physical disc. I’ll probably go with the standard edition after all.
Anyway, a trailer also accompanied the news, although it’s just a short cinematic trailer.
I’m excited for God of War Ragnarok, and I hope it’s as good as its predecessor!
Since we’re already halfway through the year, it’s safe to predict my vague thoughts of playing Ascension while waiting for Ragnarok will not come true. Maybe next year.
Are you excited for God of War Ragnarok? How do you feel about the collector’s editions not including a disc?

Aksys and Spike Chunsoft’s Showcases Recaps
Over the weekend, our cluster of game showcases concluded with the panels at Anime Expo 2022.
Bandai Namco’s contained nothing new beyond the announcement that Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher, which we discussed last week, will get an official release in the west.
That left Aksys and Spike Chunsoft, and both turned out to be well worth watching.
Aksys GamesAksys Games did not stream their showcase, but a fan in attendance streamed it, so I was able to tune in and see the announcements live. I didn’t expect much to be announced, but I hoped we’d get either a new otome announcement or Shibito Magire localization news.
They began with an overview of their upcoming games (including the release date of Piofiore: Episodio 1926 being moved up from September 22 to September 8) and soundtrack CDs available with some of them.
Then they got into the announcements. The first game shown was Pups & Purrs Pet Shop, which I thought had been already announced, but apparently this is a series and I was probably thinking of the previous Pups & Purrs game.
The second game announced was Inescapable, a “social thriller” coming to all major platforms next year. It seems to have a death game sort of premise, and I’ve seen it described as Danganronpa-inspired. So that’s definitely something I’m interested in.
Then it was otome time!
Norn9 is coming west for the Switch. I played Norn9 on the Vita and found it to be enjoyable, though I disliked the incomplete feel of the story and said I’d pick up its fandisc Last Era if it was ever released in English, since Last Era is supposed to fix a lot of those issues.
…and sure enough, yes, they followed the Norn9 trailer with a trailer for Norn9: Last Era, which is being translated at last.
Yes, they’re separate releases instead of a dual pack, but I’m just happy that we’re getting Last Era.
Then they showed another trailer, for another otome, Radiant Tale. This one is about a girl becoming the producer for a circus troupe in a fantasy world, and what stands out to me the most is how beautiful and colorful it looks.
The next game was also otome, one I’ve seen a lot of people hoping would be localized, Shuuen no Virche ~Error:Salvation, which is on the other end of the spectrum in that it appears to be about death and darkness and despair.
(I’m intrigued.)
Then the final trailer began, and when I saw “Shibito Magire” appear on the screen, I nearly screamed.
Yes, the third Spirit Hunter game is being localized under the title Spirit Hunter: Death Mark II. …Which I’m sure will cause no confusion whatsoever with the second game in the series, NG.
That was the last of the announcements, and they spent the rest of the showcase providing more details about the announced games. I went into it hoping for at least one otome or Shibito Magire, and I got four otome announcements AND Shibito Magire.
In short, 2023 is already packed for me with games to look forward to, and I’ll play NG soon.
Spike ChunsoftSpike Chunsoft also didn’t stream their showcase, and again it was streamed by a fan who was there.
They mainly highlighted already-announced games, but they did confirm that Chaos;Head Noah will be coming to PC on October 7 alongside the Switch launch of the Chaos;Head Noah / Chaos;Child dual pack.
Their showcase also had one other announcement: Anonymous;Code localization. Yes, the newest entry in the Science Adventure series is coming west in 2023 for Switch, PS4, and PC.
I’m excited to play Chaos;Head Noah and Chaos; Child, and I’m looking forward to Anonymous;Code as well… although I still need to get Robotics;Notes in the meantime!
MiscellaneousApparently Sekai Project had a ton of visual novel announcements at Anime Expo, including Nekopara After and the Nekopara spin-off Inapura: Dog’s Paradise. Type-Moon was also there and confirmed that Witch on the Holy Night is not only getting an English translation (which we discussed) but also a western release on December 8.
And there were plenty of other announcements of visual novels I’m less familiar with. In short, as a visual novel fan, this was a crazy weekend for announcements. The upcoming lineup from Aksys alone already has my backlog crying out in pain.
What do you think of the games that were announced at Anime Expo 2022?

Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher Will Have an English Release
While the Partner Showcase was filled with exciting games, Japan’s Partner Showcase included another interesting announcement: Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher.
I’ve never played the Monster Rancher games, but it’s a series that’s interested me, especially since 1 & 2 were recently remastered.
Monster Rancher is a monster-raising game in which you get monsters by using CDs. Later games used different methods, and the remasters opted to use a music database to let you search for songs to generate monsters from.
This new entry is a crossover with the Ultraman franchise, so the monsters you’ll be raising are Ultra Kaiju.
That’s… such a strange combination, but the idea of raising kaiju is so bizarre I love it.
And while no global release has been announced, it turns out there will be an English version. The Southeast Asia version will be released with an English translation, and since the Switch is region-free, that means we’ll be able to play it even if it isn’t released here.
Play-Asia already has a page up for the English version, although preorders aren’t open yet.
Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher is the sort of weird idea I can’t help but be interested in. I bet most people wouldn’t have guessed the first new Monster Rancher game in over a decade would be this. What do you think of this unexpected crossover?

Nintendo Direct Mini and Star Ocean: The Divine Force Broadcast Recaps
As we discussed on Monday, we have another cluster of video game events and showcases this week.
The first two have now taken place, the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase on Tuesday and then Square Enix’s Star Ocean: The Divine Force broadcast early this morning.
So let’s dive into what was shown, starting with the Nintendo Direct.
Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner ShowcaseDespite not being a full-blown general Nintendo Direct, this week’s Partner Showcase was actually quite good. In fact, this might be the best Partner Showcase they’ve ever had, although I’d have to go back to refresh my memory on the others.
The Partner Showcase, which you can watch here, began with another look at Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak.
Next, however, they announced that Nier Automata will be coming to the Switch. I enjoyed Nier Automata, so if you haven’t had a chance to play it, this is a great opportunity. (Meanwhile, the question of how Square Enix got Automata running on the Switch but could only manage cloud versions for Kingdom Hearts remains a mystery.)
They announced an adventure game called Lorelai and the Laser Eyes that could be interesting, and then Super Bomberman 2. They followed that with the Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, which includes all 10 Mega Man Battle Network games.
Pac-Man World is also be remade as Pac-Man World Re-Pac. I wasn’t familiar with Pac-Man World at all before, but it looks like it could be fun.
The next games were a cute co-op game called Blanc, a brand-new Monkey Island game called Return to Monkey Island, and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, which got an October 20 release date. Sparks of Hope also got its own gameplay showcase today.
After that, they showed side scrolling roguelite Little Noah: Scion of Paradise, train simulation game Railgrade, and RPG Time: The Legend of Wright, which we may have mentioned in the past. That game looks interesting, and it’ll be out on August 18.
They devoted a fair chunk of time to Sonic Frontiers, which I’m not interested in personally, although I know it’s a big game. Disney Dreamlight Valley got a new trailer, and so did Live A Live – which has a demo available now, too!
Remember when Story of Seasons got a Doraemon crossover? I guess it did well for them, because it’s getting a sequel, Doraemon Story of Seasons: Friends of the Great Kingdom. After that was a new trailer for Minecraft Legends and then one I’d been waiting to see more of for a while now, Dragon Quest Treasures.
We first discussed Dragon Quest Treasures when it was announced during the Dragon Quest anniversary event, but we didn’t know much about it. From the new trailer, it looks like a monster-collecting action RPG with a focus on searching for treasure. It will be out on December 9.
Then they had a short montage of Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, No Man’s Sky, A Plague Tale: Requiem (cloud version), and a game called Captain Velvet Meteor: The Jump+ Dimensions.
Oh, and Portal 1 & 2 are now out on the Switch in the Portal Companion Collection. Those are also great games you should check out if you haven’t had a chance to before!
Surprisingly, Square Enix stole the spotlight with a farming life sim RPG, of all things! It’s not one of my favorite genres, but Harvestella looks beautiful and interesting enough that I’m really curious about it. It will be out on November 4.
Ah, the five seasons… winter, spring, summer, fall, and DEATH.
(Seriously, though, Harvestella looks impressive. You also can choose between a male and female protagonist, although they look so similar I wouldn’t be surprised if you missed that.)
Finally, they wrapped up the Direct with the announcement that no, the Switch has not been left out after all! Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are all coming to the Nintendo Switch. Like with the Xbox announcement, Persona 5 Royal will be first, on October 21.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force BroadcastMeanwhile, Square Enix held a broadcast this morning to share new trailers and details for Star Ocean: The Divine Force.
And you know what? It looks really good!
The characters’ faces look a little odd, but overall the new trailer is impressive.
In addition to the new trailer, they also released a video focusing on the characters and combat, and another showing the first 8 minutes of the story from Raymond’s perspective. You’ll be able to choose between either Raymond or Laeticia to follow as the main character.
Although the broadcast was only in Japanese, these videos were made available in English as well.
Star Ocean: The Divine Force will be out on October 27, and I’m definitely interested now.
(It will be available for pretty much everything except Switch, so maybe I shouldn’t have paired them for this post. Then again, maybe it balances it.)
What are your thoughts on the Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase and the new details about Star Ocean: The Divine Force? Which games from the Direct are you most interested in?
