Ghost Trick, Baten Kaitos, AND the Return of Professor Layton?!
As I predicted, we’re talking a break from our romance celebration today because the Nintendo Direct on Wednesday was too exciting not to cover!
I won’t go over every game that was shown, but you can watch the entire Nintendo Direct here.
I went into the Nintendo Direct hoping for at least one of three things: the rumored Ghost Trick remaster, the rumored Baten Kaitos remaster, or Ace Attorney news.
Well, there hasn’t been Ace Attorney news yet, but otherwise the Nintendo Direct delivered more than I ever expected.
The first thing to catch my attention was the announcement of a February 15 release date for the third piece of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 DLC, along with a teaser for the story expansion that I tried not to pay too much attention to since I haven’t finished the game yet.
Then it happened: Ghost Trick.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is back! Capcom later released a full trailer confirming that Ghost Trick will be remastered for Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam) this summer. While largely the same as the original, this remaster includes a few bonuses (like sliding block puzzles for some reason).
If you’re unfamiliar with Ghost Trick, it’s a puzzle game from Shu Takumi, the creator of Ace Attorney. You play a ghost able to manipulate objects in the environment as well as rewind time to shortly before a person’s death, which you do while in search of answers about your own death.
It’s an incredible game and one of my favorites. Now that it’s coming to modern platforms, you definitely should play it.
(I was hoping to order a physical copy, but after mistakenly saying it would be available physically, Capcom corrected themselves and said it will be digital-only. Although I’m disappointed about that, I’m still getting it, of course.)
That was it, the Nintendo Direct was already won for me. I was so excited over Ghost Trick, I nearly missed the game shown directly after it, DecaPolice.
DecaPolice is an upcoming detective game, and it appears to be a combination of an investigation game and an RPG. Once I calmed down enough from the Ghost Trick news to pay attention, I realized it actually looks pretty cool.
What really surprised me was seeing the develop of DecaPolice. I actually missed it in the trailer (Ghost Trick hype), but then I saw people talking about it being a Level-5 game.
I’d more or less given up on Level-5 after their new content over the past few years consisted of unlocalized Yo-Kai Watch games, an unlocalized Megaton Musashi game, a couple mobile games, and an ever-lengthening list of delays for Inazuma Eleven. Things didn’t look good, especially with the reports that their North American offices had shut down.
So to see a new Level-5 game in the Nintendo Direct? That was quite a welcome surprise!
A few other interesting-looking games followed, including a narrative adventure game called Harmony: The Fall of Reverie, which I didn’t realize was from Don’t Nod until I wrote this post (and when did they change their name from Dontnod?), Octopath Traveler II and Sea of Stars, both of which look appealing to me as a classic turn-based JRPG fan, and a full-scale remaster of the first Metroid Prime game, which has me trying to decide if it’s worth playing over the Wii U version I already have.
The Direct included another trailer for Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, as well, which I’ve had preordered for a while now.
And then the trailer was shown for the Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster. That’s right, it’s real and it’s a collection of both Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean and Baten Kaitos Origins! I had a great time with the first Baten Kaitos, although I haven’t played Origins yet. I’m so happy to see these often-overlooked JRPGs return!
Who knows, maybe this will pave the way for the cancelled Baten Kaitos 3 to be revived?
Sadly, the Baten Kaitos remasters have been confirmed to have Japanese voice acting only. While this might be a good thing for the first game and its rather terrible English dub, I’ve been told the English voice acting in Origins was much better. Still, I’ll take no dub if it means a Baten Kaitos revival!
And then they immediately followed that with the headline “A New Fantasy Life Awaits,” and I spent half a second thinking, “No, they can’t possibly mean that Fantasy Life” before the trailer made it abundantly clear that yes, it’s that Fantasy Life!
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is a sequel to the 2012 (2014 worldwide) JRPG life sim from Level-5. While it technically received a sequel before, Fantasy Life 2 was a short-lived mobile game that was shut down after a couple of years. Now this new game looks to be a full sequel worthy of the name and incorporates time travel into the gameplay.
Fantasy Life was a lot of fun, so I’m happy to see it get a true sequel at last (and disappointed at the number of online reactions I’ve seen where people see the title and dismiss it as just another farming game; you don’t even farm in Fantasy Life!) and hope it lives up to the original.
And then they followed that up a short teaser trailer that made me freak out the second I saw a top hat wearing silhouette… Professor Layton is BACK!
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam is a new entry in the series, and you know, despite my mixed feelings about the last game in the series, my excitement at seeing a new Professor Layton game announced was on the same level as if it was Ace Attorney.
(Maybe even more, since I’m not among the doomsayers who believe Ace Attorney is dead, but I did believe the Professor Layton series was probably dead outside of my faint hopes for a Layton Brothers remaster/sequel because of the manga.)
So yes, I’m thrilled beyond belief that Professor Layton is back… but since the announcement, my excitement has been tempered with caution.
A lot of fans seem to think that because this game stars Professor Layton himself (and Luke, as revealed by the official website), it will be a return to form. But I’m not so sure. Layton Mystery Journey’s problem was not the protagonist. Katrielle would have been fine if she had a better game around her. The low-stakes writing, lack of story, and weak puzzle direction were the game’s actual problems and won’t necessarily be fixed just because Hershel is back in the protagonist’s role.
But you know what? I want to believe. I want to believe they saw the mixed reception and sat down to write a solid Professor Layton story again. I want to believe they brought in a good puzzle designer to make this game’s lineup of brainteasers. I love this series so much that I want to believe in it again, with as much excitement as I felt when Layton’s Mystery Journey itself was first teased.
The Nintendo Direct continued after that and closed with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but I don’t care about that nearly as much as the other games here.
Ghost Trick and Baten Kaitos remasters, Fantasy Life and Professor Layton sequels… I can hardly believe all of these things happened in the same Nintendo Direct. (Also, is it just me, or did this Nintendo Direct have an unusually large number of mystery/investigation games?) It was an incredible Direct, and 2023 is shaping up to be an amazing year of games.
What did you think of the games shown in the Nintendo Direct?

Celebrating All Things Romantic: Doodle Date
Today we’re going to talk about an unusual indie game I picked up in a bundle, Doodle Date.
Doodle Date has a unique central gimmick: you draw the character you’re dating.
After being pulled into the world of your sketchbook, you are asked to draw your ideal date. You draw several different expressions/poses for this character, who is then named Sketchy and goes on a date with you. At certain points in the game, you have to draw other things, as well, like your waiter at a restaurant.
The drawing gimmick is entertaining, and I liked seeing how it was implemented at various points. My terrible artwork just made it funnier.
On the other hand, I’m not sure I’d actually call this a romance. It’s a short game, taking about 30 minutes for one playthrough, and the romantic development generally consists of being told you’re going on dates with Sketchy and growing closer. Instead of developing a romance, it spends more time playing into the darker implications of entering a world of sketches and creating someone to fall in love with you.
Click for Doodle Date spoilersIn the Sketchy route, you become upset that Sketchy won’t have sex with you and learn that Sketchy is distressed over every aspect of their existence being created for your benefit. You get a divorce. It’s also possible to instead end up with Claire, the pre-existing sketch who tells you how the sketch world works. In that route, you get her pregnant, and the implications of a human-sketch hybrid baby are apparently so horrifying that she tries to kill you, so you kill her. Then the baby shows up years later and kills you in revenge.
Doodle Date is a romance game in the same way Doki Doki Literature Club could be seen as one, except that game devotes a greater amount of time to developing the character relationships first.
That’s a shame, because drawing your own love interest for a visual novel is a fun idea that I would have liked to see played out in earnest instead of from this meta perspective. It’s still interesting, but not what I was expecting.
So far this February I’ve reviewed a Nekopara game that focuses more on personal growth, and now a meta horror take on visual novels. At least Wintertide Miracles was a good romance story! Friday’s post has a good chance of being supplanted by Nintendo Direct news (fingers crossed), so let’s hope I manage to find another genuine romance for our review on Monday!

Celebrating All Things Romantic: Code Realize ~Wintertide Miracles~
After discussing the otome visual novel Code: Realize two years ago and its fandisc Future Blessings last year, now we’ll be talking about the second fandisc, Wintertide Miracles.
(As a reminder, a fandisc can be seen as an extended epilogue game, or a sequel that builds on your happy ending.)
Like its predecessor, Wintertide Miracles contains several different types of stories.
One entertaining inclusion are the “triangle dates,” scenes that feature the main protagonist Cardia with two of the other characters. While not explicitly dates like the name would suggest, most of them feature the love interests vying for her interest with some comedic antics along the way.
The triangle dates aren’t just restricted to love interests, though, and those additional scenarios might be the funniest of all.
(Nemo is a treasure, and he’s at his best in Wintertide Miracles.)
Now let’s talk about the character routes, the game’s core content. These are set at Christmas, making this otome a great choice to read around the holidays. Instead of following each character’s ending from the original game, however, all the Christmas stories follow the ending of Finis’s route from Future Blessings. Essentially, it treats that as an extended common route so that the romances can develop from there.
They’re quite cute and sweet, with an emphasis on romance and holiday cheer instead of high stakes, a lovely way to revisit these characters.
But if you need a break from the winter setting, each character also has a bonus short story set at the beach that unlocks when you complete that character’s route.
Since Future Blessings included a new route for Herlock Sholmes, as well as the platonic Finis route, both of those characters get their own follow-up stories as well, with higher stakes and more dramatic plotlines than those found in the Christmas stories. There is also another side story set during the original game’s common route, in which Cardia befriends a songstress named Cantarella and becomes entangled in a new plot. Despite its slow start, I ended up enjoying this story quite a bit.
Finally, once you finish playing everything else (except the beach stories, which are optional), you unlock special epilogues for each of the main love interests. These do follow their individual Future Blessings routes and are fairly low-stakes stories showing the characters happy and in love.
I greatly enjoyed Code: Realize ~Wintertide Miracles~. Going into it, I worried it might feel stretched for content, being the second fandisc. However, I enjoyed it just as much as Future Blessings. Maybe it’s heavier on the fluff than on serious conflict, but there’s nothing wrong with that. If you’re a Code: Realize fan, you definitely should check out Wintertide Miracles – especially around the holidays.
(Personally, I wouldn’t mind a third Code: Realize fandisc. Maybe with Nemo and Hansel routes? I can dream.)

Celebrating All Things Romantic: Nekopara Vol. 4
The Nekopara series continues to surprise me.
After reading through Nekopara Vol. 1, Vol. 2, and Vol. 3 in past years (not to mention the otome spin-off Catboys Paradise), this year I moved on to Nekopara Vol. 4 anticipating another story of Kashou starting a relationship with more catgirls.
So it’s quite a surprise that I’m mainly counting this as a “Celebrating All Things Romantic” review by virtue of the series itself fitting in the theme.
The past entries featured Kashou getting to know the catgirls who help him manage the patisserie La Soleil, helping them through their problems and conflicts at the same time. In the fourth volume, however, it’s the protagonist himself who takes the center stage.
An encounter with his father, who disapproves of his work in the patisserie and tells him his cooking is still lacking, leads Kashou to question himself and what it is that he’s missing. This entry largely focuses on his conflict with his father and his personal journey to overcome his doubts. It’s quite heartfelt, and its messages are surprisingly wholesome.
It’s still filled with catgirl antics and funny moments, but the focus was much more on Kashou’s character development.
Of course, this is Nekopara, so the lack of romance is mitigated if you get the 18+ version (or the 18+ patch). While this entry might not include any new relationships, the main character still has six catgirls to spend time with. What’s more, I learned that the 18+ content of Nekopara Vol. 4 actually contains alternate scenes as well, where if you say you’re in the company of other people, you’ll be presented with a different intimate/romantic scene instead of a sex scene.
I also learned that the console versions of the Nekopara games are not the same as the all-ages Steam version after all, but replace the sex scenes with different scenes.
That’s more complicated than I expected from Nekopara, but then again, it’s a series full of surprises. In short, Nekopara Vol. 4 does not focus on romance as much as the others, but will still have its share of romantic scenes and/or related activities depending on the version you play. Meanwhile, the core story is a surprisingly wholesome tale about fulfilling your dreams and seeing what drives you.
Volume 4 is currently the last game in the Nekopara series, although a new game called Nekopara After La Vraie Famille was announced in 2021. And don’t forget, you could win a Steam collection of the Nekopara series by participating in this year’s contest!

February is here, and that means we’re once again dedicating a month to romance in honor of Valentine’s Day. Celebrating All Things Romantic 2023 has begun!

Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles Announced
So the NIS 30th Anniversary live stream began with the announcement of Disgaea 7 localization, as expected.
The next announcement, however, was quite a surprise.
Rhapsody: Marl Kingdom Chronicles has been announced for summer 2023 for the Switch, PS5, and PC.
While Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure was re-released last year as part of Prinny Presents NIS Classics Volume 3, this new release is a collection of Rhapsody II: Ballad of the Little Princess and Rhapsody III: Memories of Marl Kingdom. This is the first time these two games will have official translations.
(It looks like they’ll be sold individually on Steam.)
The games are cute and look interesting, so I might pick up that NIS Classics collection to try the first Rhapsody before its sequels come out.
The limited edition looks pretty cool, too.
Have you played Rhapsody? Are you excited for its sequels finally coming west?

Vanillaware’s Next Game is Almost Finished
According to a new interview from Nintenderos, translated by Persona Central, the next game from Vanillaware is almost ready to go.
Vanillaware first teased this game back in 2019, when they released the prologue for 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim Prologue was essentially a paid demo with some other bonuses, including a tiny teaser trailer for an unannounced game.
The teaser is incredibly short, and shows a forest setting with a castle in the background before focusing in on a knight facing a group of other knights on horseback.
That’s it, that’s all we have to go on, but we’ll probably hear more about the game soon. In the interview, Vanillaware president George Kamitani says the game teased back then is now finished, and it’s “one of Vanillaware’s biggest productions.” He isn’t the director for that one, but has another project in the early stages that can fully enter development now that the previous project is done.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was the first Vanillaware title I played, and it was a magnificent game, enough to have me intrigued by this new title based on that alone.
(I did start Muramasa sometime previously, but I never got too far into it.)
I know their games were mostly known for gameplay over story until 13 Sentinels came along, so I can’t assume this mysterious new game will have the same sort of amazing storytelling that captivated me there. Nevertheless, I’m still excited to see what Vanillaware has in store.

NIS 30th Anniversary Live Stream Announced for January 30
NISA has announced a special live stream to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Nippon Ichi Software.
It will be held on January 30 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET and feature new game announcements and merchandise.
Since NISA is holding the live stream, that should mean any new games announced will be localized.
But while NISA handles localization for a lot of series I’m interested in, I don’t think we’ll see news about games like Trails and Ys here. It’s NISA’s stream, but it’s for NIS’s anniversary, so it’ll probably be focused on NIS-developed titles.
With that in mind, I think Disgaea 7 localization has the best chance of being announced. It’s due out tomorrow in Japan, so an event like this a few days later feels like prime time to reveal it. I’ve never gotten into the Disgaea series, but I know it has a lot of fans.
What else could be announced?
It’s probably too soon for another Yomawari title to be announced, although I’d love to see it. Maybe I can hold out hope for some of those visual novels NIS has never localized, like that Jack the Ripper murder mystery I’ve been wishing for ever since it was announced. They’ve also been releasing those NIS Classics collections quickly enough that another one sounds plausible.
Maybe they’ve got some surprising new announcements to be revealed, too. I’ll certainly be tuned in to find out!
What do you hope or expect to see from the NIS 30th anniversary live stream?

Top 5 Ace Attorney Announcements I’d Love to See
It’s been a while since we’ve had any Ace Attorney announcements, despite me checking for news every time I see it’s trending on Twitter.
It’s been long enough that when the official Facebook and Twitter accounts changed their profile picture, I clung to it as a hint of upcoming news.
Since the release of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles in July 2021 (which itself came after a long drought of Ace Attorney news), all we’ve had in the way of new Ace Attorney releases is an Apollo Justice trademark that still hasn’t come to anything and the replacement of the buggy Phoenix Wright Trilogy mobile port with the better version every other platform already had.
So as far as actual game news goes… we have nothing. And I keep hoping.
But what sort of Ace Attorney announcements am I hoping to see?
Any announcements, I would say… except not another version of the trilogy; the trilogy is so widely-available now that it’s the last thing we need.
So here are the top 5 Ace Attorney announcements I’m hoping for the most.
5. Ace Attorney 4-6 CollectionFor newcomers to Ace Attorney, the second half of the main series presents a problem. The Phoenix Wright Trilogy has been ported to all modern platforms, so you have your choice of where to play it.
But the fourth game, Apollo Justice, is available on DS, 3DS, and mobile. Nothing besides those. The fifth and sixth games, Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, are only available on 3DS and mobile. What makes this worse is that the 3DS games never got physical releases, so once the 3DS eShop shuts down in March, it’ll be the mobile ports or nothing for the last two main series entries.
So it’s high time we got ports or remasters of those remaining three games, preferably as another collection to go alongside the Phoenix Wright Trilogy. What would they call it? Ace Attorney: The Second Trilogy? The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy 2? The Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy, ignoring the fact that his name is only in one of the three titles? Since games 4-6 aren’t a cohesive trilogy, naming such a collection might be the trickiest part. All the same, a collection like that is one of the announcements I’m hoping to see.
4. Ace Attorney Investigations CollectionYou know, at least Apollo Justice got ported to the 3DS. The same can’t be said for Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth, the spin-off available only on the DS and mobile. And then there’s its sequel, the never-localized Gyakuten Kenji 2, which is one of the best in the series according to people who have actually gotten to play it.
After campaigning for its localization for years, I more or less gave up hope until the release of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. If those two spin-offs can be bundled together for a new release (and localized), why can’t we have an Ace Attorney Investigations duology bundle?
Apparently the orchestra concert last year contained a large number of Gyakuten Kenji 2 songs, which I’m clinging to as a sign. Maybe this time, Investigations 2 will finally come to the West.
3. The Great Ace Attorney 3The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a perfect duology. It’s a wonderful story with everything neatly wrapped up at the end, with only the slightest of hints that maybe a sequel could be made. Part of me wants to say that we should just let it end there, lest a sequel ruin the conclusion.
…But partway through Chronicles, I realized I wanted to stay with its characters forever. I didn’t even want another main series title at that point, because I’d grown so attached to the Great Ace Attorney cast. So I’d be nervous about it being done well, but I’d really love a Great Ace Attorney 3.
2. Ace Attorney 7My fervor for The Great Ace Attorney has cooled since then just the slightest amount, enough for me to accept that getting a new mainline entry is probably more exciting after all. We’ve been expecting Ace Attorney 7 since the rumors in 2017. For that matter, the data breach that first leaked Chronicles also listed Ace Attorney 7 for a Q3 2021 release, which it obviously missed.
The truly pessimistic fans believe it’s been cancelled, but I’m sure we’ll see Ace Attorney 7 eventually. But when? And what will it be like? Yamazaki, who directed the Investigations game as well as Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice, left Capcom in 2020, so we could even have someone new at the helm.
Will it be another “Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – some new subtitle” entry? Or perhaps an “Athena Cykes: Ace Attorney”? Another game starring Apollo?
Let’s just hope we get Ace Attorney 7 news sooner rather than later… this year, perhaps?
1. Great Ace Attorney InvestigationsFinally, the Ace Attorney game I actually want the most is probably the least likely of all the ideas on this list. Edgeworth got his Ace Attorney Investigations spin-offs, and now I want another prosecutor-led game set in the Great Ace Attorney era. That’s about all I can say without Great Ace Attorney spoilers, except that I think there’s enough room for further development and character arcs there that it could be an amazing game!
(I actually went into more detail about what I want behind a spoiler tag in my Great Ace Attorney 2 review.)
It would star all my favorite characters. I want it. I need it. I’ll be terrified about whether or not it could live up to the duology, but I still want it with all my heart.
ConclusionI’m sure there are plenty of other Ace Attorney games fans might hope for. A port of the Professor Layton crossover? Another crossover? A game starring Sholmes? Something entirely new with a new protagonist? I’m on board for any and all new Ace Attorney content, but these are the five announcements I’d most love to see.
What Ace Attorney games do you hope will exist in the future?

Granblue Fantasy: Relink News and Trailer Coming Tomorrow
It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Granblue Fantasy: Relink.
This action JRPG was announced all the way back in 2016. In 2018, we celebrated its localization announcement. That was back when it was being developed by Platinum, which it isn’t anymore.
Then in 2020, we discussed the shift in developers and upcoming news. It already seemed like ages since it had been announced, and now here we are in 2023 still waiting for a release date.
Well, maybe it’s finally time. It’s been announced that a new trailer will be shown in the Granblue Fes live stream tonight at 10:45 PM PT / tomorrow at 1:45 AM ET. The live stream will also include Granblue Fantasy Relink announcements. Here’s hoping that includes the release date.
Several new screenshots have also been shown, which you can see here in Gematsu’s article about it. A demo is available at Granblue Fes as well, which people can play for 10 minutes, so some gameplay impressions have started to appear online.
It’s been so long since Granblue Fantasy Relink was announced, it’s hard to believe we might finally get something substantial.
Although at the same time, the wait could be worse. Looking back at those old posts about Relink, I mentioned Atlus’s Project Re Fantasy twice and also brought up Monolith Soft’s unknown fantasy IP. We still haven’t seen anything about either of those. Maybe their time will come this year as well.
For now, we know we have Granblue Fantasy Relink news to look forward to tomorrow. Are you excited, or has the long wait dampened your enthusiasm?
