E3 2016 Part 1: Schedule and EA’s Press Conference

Another E3 has begun!

EA – June 12 at 1 PM Pacific Time / 4 PM Eastern Time

Although Nintendo does not have a press conference or digital show, Nintendo Treehouse will begin streaming on June 14 at 9 AM Pacific Time / 12 PM Eastern Time.


This year, I have a new set of pipe dreams as well as some serious predictions, so let’s begin our look at E3 2016.

No surprise announcements ahead of time this year, so let’s start with the first press conference.


EA’s E3 2016 Press Conference

EA has a lot of franchises I don’t particularly care for, so its press conferences aren’t often high on my list.


This time, they started off with Titanfall 2. Unlike the original, it has a single-player mode. This makes me moderately more interested, but I’m still not sold on Titanfall.


After that, sports games took center stage, as often happens with EA.


Now, there are a few EA games I’m interested in… such as Mass Effect: Andromeda!



I was really looking forward to Andromeda news, but I don’t feel like I know much more than I did yesterday. The premise of entering an alien galaxy is interesting, but the trailer didn’t really show much. I want to know more about Andromeda’s story and how its gameplay will compare to the previous Mass Effect games.


They promised more details for the fall, so I’ll be patient.


Andromeda’s time ended far too quickly. After a brief explanation of EA Access and a new feature called Play to Give, they moved on to FIFA 17… which has an all-out story mode. Story mode, however, is not enough to convince me.


Then they referenced last year’s E3, where they showed Unravel. Although I haven’t played that adorable little platformer yet, it interested me. This gave me hope I’d like whatever they showed next… and I did!


EA has launched a new program called EA Originals, designed to work with small developers to deliver unique experiences, and the first one is a game called Fe.



It looks cute and pretty interesting, so I’ll be keeping my eye on Fe.


And then it was Star Wars time! Yeah! I love Star Wars games!


Well, they didn’t have too much to show. There’s going to be a new Battlefront, as well as a couple other Star Wars games.


Visceral-Games-Star-Wars-concept-art Visceral Games and Amy Hennig are making an action-adventure Star Wars game that tells and original story with new characters.


They showed off some concept art (pictured) and a few seconds of gameplay.


Respawn Entertainment is also working on a third-person action-adventure Star Wars game, which is set in “different era.” They showed motion capture work for a lightsaber duel.


I’m excited for more Star Wars, so I can’t wait to learn more about these two games.


After that, EA moved on to Battlefield 1. And that was that!


As usual, EA’s show at E3 only had a few games that caught my interest. But this is just the beginning. E3 will continue tonight with Bethesda’s press conference. While we wait, let me know your thoughts on EA’s show.

My Hatoful Boyfriend Plushies

Remember the Hatoful Boyfriend Plush Project Kickstarter I supported back in November?

Pictured above, you can see my four Hatoful Boyfriend plushies, along with the other bonuses given to backers. You can also see my inexpert photography, so let’s take a closer look at each of these birdies!


My favorite, to no one’s surprise, is our mad scientist Dr. Shuu Iwamine. Here he is along with the character tag showing his human form.

How much do I love Shuu? Well, I named him among my top 5 favorite video game mad scientists. (Note: I hadn’t reached my beloved Kingdom Hearts mad scientists at the time I wrote that list.)


Moving on, here is our crazy “fallen angel,” Anghel Higure.

Remember, while Anghel may live in a strange little world all of his own, the Anghel-verse has its own manga. I reviewed it and definitely recommend it to Anghel fans.


Of course, I couldn’t get Hatoful Boyfriend plushies and ignore sweet little Nageki Fujishiro.

If you’ve played the games, you know there’s more to Nageki than meets the eye… and don’t forget, there’s a rare conversation between Nageki and Anghel that becomes fascinating once you’ve played through the BBL route.


And speaking of characters who become more interesting the more you know about them, I also got a plushie of the character who gave me my first Hatoful Boyfriend ending, narcoleptic teacher Kazuaki Nanaki.

He frequently topples. Even a Kazuaki plushie can’t stay awake!


Finally, along with the Takaba Lab lanyard you can see in the big picture I posted first, we also got pins of Labor 9, the King, Miru & Kaku, and the St. Pigeonation’s crest.

Remember, if you know who none of these characters are, you should play Hatoful Boyfriend and its sequel, Holiday Star.


Is the premise absurd? Of course! They’re about a human girl attending an all-bird school! But despite all of that, they’re actually really great games.


When I reviewed the first game, I couldn’t stress enough how unexpectedly good it was. Meanwhile, while the second game is different, I consider it a perfect companion to the first.


As for the plushies, they’re soft, wonderfully-made, and everything I could ask for from Hatoful Boyfriend plushies! Each is five inches, and here’s a shot of Shuu in my hand so you can better judge the size.

Not all crowd-funded projects work out, but here’s one that definitely did. I’m so happy to have received my Hatoful Boyfriend plushies (they actually arrived a few days ago, but Kingdom Hearts prevented me from blogging about them then), and I think they’re fantastic!

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is Set for December

Kingdom-Hearts-2.8-Final-Chapter-PrologueKingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is my most-anticipated game of 2016, and I’ll get to see most of the year before I play it.


Today, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 was confirmed for a December release.


(I was hoping for August, but oh well.)


While its glorious title can cause a bit of confusion, this is a new collection that contains:



Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD
Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth By Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage (which is brand new!)
Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover (which is an HD movie that doesn’t just re-tell Unchained χ, but is a different aspect of the story focused on the Foretellers)

Because of how late I got into the Kingdom Hearts series, I never played Dream Drop Distance on the 3DS. I do, however, intend to play the demo on my 3DS once I watch Re:coded.


The announcement was accompanied by an awesome new E3 trailer, because releasing E3 trailers before E3 has become a trend. I haven’t actually watched the trailer yet, because I’m still deathly afraid of spoilers, but you can enjoy it.



I’m certain (due to the explosion of 2.8 excitement across the Internet) it’s a wonderful trailer, and in a few days after I watch Re:coded, I’ll watch it and join you in your excitement!


Anyway, December 2016 for Kingdom Hearts 2.8. I can’t wait!

A New Favorite is Born in Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep

Birth-By-SleepMy saga through the Kingdom Hearts series continues!


After I played and reviewed Kingdom Hearts (which I enjoyed), Re: Chain of Memories (which I mostly liked), and Kingdom Hearts II (which I loved), I watched the cutscenes for 358/2 Days and then took a short break…


…and spent the whole break waiting to play Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep.


As with the previous games, I didn’t play the original version, but the Birth By Sleep Final Mix included in the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix.


Verdict? I have a new favorite Kingdom Hearts game.


One of my criticisms of Kingdom Hearts II was that its worlds felt much more linear than the worlds in the first game. While I’d still say Birth By Sleep’s worlds suffer from that a little, it was more fun to explore them and some had secrets to discover.


The gameplay also introduced the Command Deck, which fortunately is nothing like Chain of Memories’ card deck. Instead, it’s how you use all of your special moves, magic, etc. It’s fantastic!


Not only is it nice to set up your special commands and be able to use them with one button (which is the button Kingdom Hearts II used for opening treasure chests, so my early Birth By Sleep hours included many wild attacks on treasure chests), but commands also level up as you use them. Commands at their maximum level can be melded to form new ones.


Command melding is a lot of fun, especially when you end up with a powerful new command. Special items let you attach abilities to them, which you keep permanently if you max out the command, which makes it even better.


Birth-By-Sleep-Command-BoardBut the best part about the Command Deck is the Command Board, a mini-game for leveling up your commands and obtaining new ones.


It’s like a streamlined Mario Party played against other Birth By Sleep hours, and I never got tired of it. In fact, I wanted more boards and more characters!


A few other features distinguish Birth By Sleep’s combat from that of the previous games. First, D-Links, where you channel the power of other characters to temporarily use their commands and special attacks. It wasn’t my favorite feature, but it helped me out on a few occasions.


Second, shotlocks, where you essentially aim a powerful attack that can either hit multiple enemies or do a ton of damage to one. Shotlocks were fantastic to use, especially my favorite, Meteor Shower.


The D-Link gauge is replenished by orbs dropped by enemies, and the shotlock gauge refills as you attack enemies.


Attacking enemies also fills your command gauge, which ends with either a finishing move (which you learn more of as you play) or a transition to a Command Style, which gives you different attacks and has its own special finishing move. Some Command Styles can be transitioned into different ones, and they are usually really cool.


That’s already a lot of stuff to love about Birth By Sleep, and we haven’t even gotten to my favorite parts: the story and characters.


Birth By Sleep has three protagonists, Terra, Ventus, and Aqua. Each has a separate story to play through, although the three stories intersect and overlap. If you’ve played Kingdom Hearts II, Ventus should look familiar. There’s a reason for this, and it’s not as confusing as you might fear.


I’ve heard people say Birth By Sleep is where Kingdom Hearts’s story goes crazy. If so, then it’s my kind of crazy, because I loved it.


Birth-By-Sleep-TerraThe plot, the characters, I loved them all. Some of my old favorites from previous games even returned, which delighted me to no end. And while the Disney worlds sometimes felt separate from the main plot, they tied in fairly well to the protagonists’ character development, and some were just plain fun.


Terra’s story was my favorite, even if I sometimes wanted to shake him. (That’s him to the right. Look into his eyes. These are the eyes of a man who will trust anyone, no matter how obviously evil, until their villainy becomes explicit. It’s rather endearing, really… if frustrating.)


Speaking of villains, I finally got to see Master Xehanort, who claimed a spot on my list of favorite characters almost immediately for being horrible and manipulative in the most entertaining of ways.


I went into Birth By Sleep wondering how the game would handle him. Kingdom Hearts II already attached the name Xehanort to a villain, and Birth By Sleep’s intro showed him being pretty obviously evil, so it could have been painful if they tried to pretend he wasn’t bad. To my relief and amusement, it doesn’t try at all, and Master Xehanort spends the game’s early scenes giving the camera evil smirks at every possible opportunity.


(To be honest, the sheer amount of Xehanort is one of the reasons Terra’s story is my favorite. The villain can make or break a story for me, and he definitely makes it.)


Click for implied Birth By Sleep spoiler (and a Dark Shadows reference)I also found it very funny that I played Birth By Sleep while watching the 1897 storyline of the original Dark Shadows, specifically the arc where Count Petofi takes over Quentin’s body.

The only criticism I have of Birth By Sleep’s story is that Aqua doesn’t really have one. She’s following Terra and Ventus, but she lacks her own plot, which made her story duller than the others. Since she’s a Keyblade Master, I actually expected Master Eraqus to have a stronger role in her story.


He doesn’t, which is a shame. He’d actually grown on me quite a bit by the time I got to Aqua’s story, so I was looking forward to seeing more of him.


Still, one dull story (and a lack of Eraqus) is a small complaint, and really the only complaint I have about Birth By Sleep except that the mini-games felt repetitive since they were the same for all three characters. Besides, the Final Episode made up for Aqua’s lackluster story.


Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep, which I played as part of the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix has everything I ask for in a video game: an exciting plot, enjoyable and memorable characters, and fun gameplay. Toss in a great mini-game like the Command Board, and you can’t go wrong.


If you’re catching up on the series or you just never got around to Birth By Sleep, I highly recommend it.


And now it’s over. Once I watch the cutcenes for Re:coded, I’ll have nothing to do except wait for Kingdom Hearts 2.8. No more Kingdom Hearts to play. Well…

Nintendo’s E3 Live Stream Will Include More Games

Dragon-Quest-VII-screenshotNintendo’s E3 2016 plans caused a considerable amount of concern and confusion, but it’s not so bad after all.


The Legend of Zelda may be the only game playable at E3, and Nintendo’s digital press conference has been replaced by a Legend of Zelda live stream… but Nintendo Treehouse, at least, will show additional games.


According to the Nintendo Treehouse E3 schedule, the June 14 live stream will begin at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET with Pokémon Sun and Moon gameplay, and then The Legend of Zelda.


Live streaming will begin again on June 15 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET with a Pokémon GO Q&A. They’ll then show Monster Hunter Generations, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE.


This should give people another opportunity to see what Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE is. The recent story trailer should also help.



So we’ve got a few more games besides Zelda to look forward to. The description says “including” those games, so we should see more.


A few notable titles are missing from the list, like Paper Mario: Color Splash. I’m still hoping they noticed the backlash and decided to change Color Splash into a story-driven RPG if it was Sticker Star 2.0.


Of course, I’m hoping for surprise announcements from Nintendo, too, and this makes them feel all the more likely.

Final Fantasy XV Isn’t Fully Open World (And Other Fun Details)

Final-Fantasy-XV-campI’ve warmed up toward Final Fantasy XV a lot since it was revealed. A couple months ago, I went so far as to say I believe in it, even though it’s open world.


Guess what?


Final Fantasy XV isn’t fully open world after all.


To clarify, I don’t want all my games to be linear, not by any means. The growing trend of open world games disturbs me because I prefer the semi-linear style where new areas unlock as you progress and the world gradually opens up.


Well, that’s actually the style Final Fantasy XV has!


In a new Active Time Report, Square Enix revealed many details about Final Fantasy XV. Gematsu compiled them all, and what stood out to me the most?


“The game isn’t set in an open world where you can freely go wherever you like. Since there is a main quest, the more you progress, the more places you’ll be able to go.”


Yes! New areas unlock as you progress. And what about backtracking?


“You can return to areas you’ve previously visited so long as it’s before the last boss.”


It’s still not like having a world map (which I love), but I’ll take it!


There’s fast-travel, too. I’ve grown to appreciate fast-travel with the lack of a world map, so I’m happy it’s there as an option. Of course, I can’t wait to fly the car, and apparently it’s possible to crash and get a game over if you don’t land properly.


A ton of other details were announced, such as that the white-hooded man shown in the E3 2013 trailer will still appear in the game.



Oh, and the main characters’ profiles have been updated with new information about them, such as their ages. Personally, I expected Ignis and Gladiolus to be a little older than 22 and 23, but apparently not.


There’s a lot to look through, so be sure to check out the article from Gematsu. Right now, I’m thrilled it isn’t a full open world and more excited for Final Fantasy XV than ever.

Let’s Look at World of Final Fantasy’s Villains

World-of-Final-Fantasy-BrendiresWhile Final Fantasy XV gets most of the attention, World of Final Fantasy is the other upcoming Final Fantasy game, a turn-based RPG for the PlayStation 4 and Vita.


A year ago, after it was shown at Sony’s E3 2015 show, I wasn’t sure what it was about.


Was it a story-driven RPG? A cute little game mainly concerned with being cute?


Would it be an epic turn-based RPG, or another sign Square Enix thinks “epic” and “turn-based” are contradictory?


I’m still not entirely sure, although the trailer shown at TGS 2015 helped.



In an interview with Kotaku, the director said it would have the “volume of a story” found in Final Fantasy VI, VII, and VIII. That’s great, but I can’t help but be a little skeptical when I see this cute world filled with chibi versions of past Final Fantasy characters…


Nevertheless, Square Enix has released new details and screenshots, so let’s talk about one of our favorite things: the villains!


Dark Knight Brendires

The guy pictured up above is Dark Knight Brendires. “Dark Knight” is probably his class, since he’s the king in charge of the Bahamut Army. In traditional villain fashion, he plans to take over the world.


He has a cool design, so I’m interested in learning more about him despite his vague motivations.


Seguriwades

World-of-Final-Fantasy-SeguriwadesSeguriwades is the Bahamut Army’s staff officer, responsible for developing their strategies.


He and Brendires will create a “vortex of chaos” in the world, which is here called Grymoire although it’s previously been written as Grimoire.


I’d like to get a better look at him. I also hope they have some more allies… maybe a mad scientist?


Ahem.


Other Characters

The new information also revealed a mysterious Masked Woman who seems helpful but might not be, the Bahamut Soldier enemies, chibi Vivi from Final Fantasy IX, new saver summons (used by Yuna, Cloud, the Warrior of Light, and Lightning), and three Mirages (Odin, Undead Princess, and Descal).


I’m still not entirely sure what World of Final Fantasy is.


But hey, Brendires and Seguriwades look interesting, so maybe this really will be a return to both Final Fantasy’s gameplay and storytelling of old.

Muv-Luv Set for July, Dragon Quest Builders in October

We’ve got release windows for two Japanese games to talk about today.

Muv-LuvFirst up, Muv-Luv.


Back in January, I discussed Muv-Luv as one of several games I’ve crowd-funded and explained it’s supposed to be one of the best visual novel series ever.


According to the latest announcement, the translation for Muv-Luv Extra is finished, and Muv-Luv Unlimited should be ready in June.


The planned release date for Muv-Luv in the West is July. They have cancelled the beta test so they can focus on getting the full release ready in time.


Muv-Luv (Extra and Unlimited) has a Steam page now. Muv-Luv Alternative is planned to follow in the winter. It hasn’t appeared on PSN yet, but it will be released for the Vita, as well.


Unfortunately, physical copies were only available to backers.


I look forward to finding out in July what Muv-Luv is all about.


Dragon Quest Builders

Next, a game most people thought wouldn’t be localized has been announced for the West… Dragon Quest Builders, available for PS4 and Vita.



While Dragon Quest Builders is a Minecraft-esque building game, it’s also an action RPG with a full-length story mode.


One thing I find really cool about it is that it’s set in the same world as the original game, which I actually played, following an alternate ending where the hero joins the Dragonlord instead of defeating him.


I’m not much of a sandbox/builder fan, but the story has me interested. It’s also just good to see Square Enix showing confidence in the West’s Dragon Quest market.


Dragon Quest Builders will be out in October.

Gameplay Trailer for I Am Setsuna

I-Am-SetsunaI Am Setsuna is one of my most-anticipated games of the year.


The first game made by Square Enix’s new development studio, Tokyo RPG Factory, and announced at last year’s E3 show, I Am Setsuna is a classic-style JRPG in the style of Chrono Trigger.


It is being localized for the PlayStation 4 and PC (via Steam). Unfortunately, it’s digital-only. Still if you like this sort of game, don’t let its digital nature deter you!


I Am Setsuna will be out on July 19 for $39.99, and Steam pre-orders come with a bonus music track.


Square Enix just released an E3 2016 trailer for the game. E3 is still a few weeks away, but nothing like getting a head start, I guess. It’s an English gameplay trailer, so take a look for a better idea of what this game is like.



It looks pretty fun, and the Chrono Trigger influence is clear.


I’m looking forward to this game, although I need to decide if I want to play it on the PC or the PS4 I haven’t bought yet. Either way, I can’t wait until July.


With any luck, I Am Setsuna will be a big success and encourage Tokyo RPG Factory to make more games like it. Maybe it will even convince Square Enix turn-based combat isn’t dead yet.

My Hopes for Pokémon Sun and Moon

Pokemon-Sun-and-Moon-box-artSince their announcement, I haven’t said a lot about Pokémon Sun and Moon.


Pokémon X and Y were a disappointment to me. I haven’t touched my copy of Y in ages, not even to get any of the event Pokémon. (And I was the sort of person who visited the mall with multiple Pokémon games to get the event Pokémon in all of them.)


But I can’t hold a grudge against the whole series. I might even give Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire a chance after all. And when it comes to Sun and Moon, here are my hopes for it.


Improved Exploration

To me, X and Y didn’t feel like they had a lot of exploration. Sure, the world was 3D, but there wasn’t much of it. Caves, especially suffered. While I’m not a big fan of Pokémon caves, they felt lifeless.


I don’t mind a little linearity, but I never felt a real interest in X/Y’s world. Was it just me?


I hope Sun and Moon have a world I want to explore, with cool locations and side areas. Since the Alola region is a series of islands, it sounds like a perfect fit.


A Good Story

I know, looking for a good plot in Pokémon games is a bad idea to start with. After Black/White, though, I can’t help it. I loved the story in those games, and I have no end of praise for them because of it.


While the main plot of X/Y didn’t do it for me, it had glimmers of excitement… and the Looker side quest in the post-game had better writing than the entire rest of the game.


I’ve also heard the ORAS Delta Episode has good writing.


Pokémon doesn’t need to reach epic JRPG levels of plot, but I hope Sun and Moon have an interesting storyline again, one where I care about the characters and want to know what happens next.


Good Villains

Pokemon-LysandreEven without a strong story, I’ll settle for good villains. You know what my biggest problem with X/Y was? Team Flare. It’s hard to take villains seriously when they look like this.


Lysandre was at least intimidating. He wants to use an ultimate weapon to destroy anyone who isn’t part of Team Flare, then remake a more “beautiful” world.


Except Cyrus did it better!


Cyrus wants to destroy the universe to remake a universe without any conflict. (Or emotion.) He has a more concrete backstory than Lysandre. He’s crazy, but within the context of his insanity, his actions make more sense. (Aren’t the members of Team Flare exactly the sort of people Lysandre hates? Why are they the ones he’s saving?)


All right, I know there are people who like Lysandre better, but I couldn’t help but see him as a less-interesting imitation of Cyrus.


Fun Mini-Games

Pokémon contests, the Pokéathlon, Voltorb Flip, that awesome mining stuff in Diamond/Pearl/Platinum… I want more fun mini-games like that. (What did X/Y have? Just Pokémon-Amie?)


And while it’s not quite a mini-game, the Join Avenue in White 2/Black 2 was the main reason I kept playing my copy long after I finished the main game.


These are a few of the things I hope Pokémon Sun and Moon have. I apologize for my X/Y ranting. What do you hope to see in the new Pokémon games?
