And now let's chat with novelist Lillian Duncan, author of the suspense novel (with a little romance thrown in), Jane Doe (Harbourlight Books, June, 2020).

Even though her books cross genres, they have one thing in common, faith-based stories that demonstrate God’s love—and lots of action. Okay, that’s actually two things. She believes in the power of words to change lives, especially God’s Word.  

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I’m short! Very short. I’m 4’8” or at least I used to be. The doctors are saying I’m a bit shorter than that now but I’m not acknowledging that in any way!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Jane Doe.

Raven Marks survives a brutal kidnapping, but she’s haunted by the memories. First because she doesn’t have any and then because she does. She wants to move forward with her life but one thought stops her. What if she’s not his last victim? As more memories surface she has to decide whether to put it behind her or try to protect others.

What is it about Raven that will make your readers care about her?

Even though she’s hit rock bottom (literally and figuratively), she refuses to give up. She not only fights her way back to good health but is willing to do what she must to bring her kidnapper to justice so he can’t hurt anyone else.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’ve been reading The Giver series by Lois Lowry and am loving them even though they were written as young adult novels. They’re quick to read but make you think. I’d highly recommend them to anyone who hasn’t read them yet.

What are you working on now?

To be honest, not a whole lot. I finished writing my Messenger series which is a dystopian novel set in NewAmerica where even saying the name of God is a crime. I think I was so focused on that series, I’m having a hard time starting another project. But I’m not worried. Another story will come when the time is right.

I hear you. I'm even under some deadlines, and the stories are not yet bursting forth. It happens sometimes. I suppose that "fake it 'til you make it" adage occasionally fits with writing. Sometimes I don't remember those moments were even happening when I read back over things I've published!

And now let's chat with novelist Carol Nelson, author of contemporary Christian women’s novel, Audra – Dying For Life (Bookbaby Publishing, August 2020).

Carol lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where she spends most days writing her stories. Although she started writing in childhood, it took a lifetime to know what her heart truly desired and needed to write—stories that touch the fabric of women's lives with hope, grace, and faith, combined with the little spice of clean romance women enjoy. She took a writing course as a young mother, then laid all writing aside to concentrate on raising her three daughters. 
Her daughters have blessed her with seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. (An eighth grandchild is in heaven with her grandpa.) She served as an aid in a nursing home, worked in the purchasing department of a large corporation, spent time as the head cook at an all-you-can-eat buffet, and went full circle to become a care giver before settling in to her first love, writing. 
Reading, gardening, cooking, and playing cards and games keep Carol busy. She’ll be glad when she can go to church without a mask.

Amen to that, Carol! Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I love to watch the large variety of birds attracted to the seed, suet, and water in our backyard. This summer, we also spotted a mama gray fox and her two kits jumping into the yard to drink the bird’s water. It seems like she prefers city living to the nearby mountains.

How cute those foxes must be! I haven't seen a fox in the wild since moving to the west coast. They're such pretty animals.
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Audra -- Dying for Life.

It’s not a routine visit when Audra Knight's gynecologist says, "I need to do a biopsy." It leaves her numb with fear. 
Suddenly a potential cancer victim, it's not the time to notice Dann Day, the handsome new band-orchestra teacher at Chandler's Grove Academy. And why should he want anything to do with her? With her unresolved anger issues, the way she's strayed from God, and the fact that Heather Easton already seems to have claimed him for her own, getting involved would be stupid. Plus, cancer could certainly lead to heartbreak, and she won’t put a man through that. 
When Dann asks Audra's help on a school project, Heather's jealousy flares. It's the catalyst that amplifies Audra's anger, sending her back to God and church to find peace and the courage to truly live. But when Audra admits to growing feelings for Dann, can she tell the man who wants a family that he might not be able to have one with her? As the pressure mounts, how will she know the right way to go?

What is it about Audra that will make your readers care about her?

Maybe it’s the patient caring she shows her sixth grade English class. Maybe it’s the way she’s loved by students and teachers alike. Maybe it’s seeing a lovely young woman stuffing her anger and hurt in the secret closet of her heart and hoping she’ll find freedom from its oppression. But just maybe it’s all of those because Audra’s no different than any of us, a complex human being in need of heart healing.

Share with us a quote you like from a book by a different author. What do you like about the quote?

I really wanted to pass on this question. I don’t collect quotes. I don’t even remember quotes. I read to escape or be entertained. However, during my quiet time, this quote from Augustine, a Church father, popped out at me, and I hope I can remember it: 
“A great mystery, Brethren, God is above all: you raise yourself, and touch Him not: you humble yourself, and He descends to you.” 
I like this because it’s a great reminder that man can never reach God on his own merits, but if we come to Him with contrite hearts acknowledging who He is, He will meet us with everything we need.

I wasn't able to find that exact quote, but I see that Augustine clearly spoke a lot about the importance (and power, really) of humility. Thanks for that, Carol!
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I just finished A Bride's Journey to the Colorado Territory , by Diana Lesire Brandmeyer. I’ve always liked a good wagon-train story, and this book not only has an engaging story line of traveling west, it’s been very well researched. This is Book 2, so I recommend reading Book 1, A Bride's Dilemma in Friendship, Tennessee , first.

What are you working on now?

I’m getting Book 2 of the Chandler’s Grove Series, Life Transformed, ready for publication this fall or winter, and I’m writing Book 3, Becoming Sisters. I also have two stand-alone books waiting to be published.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I spent the summer after high school graduation working in the graphic art department of the Smithsonian Natural History Museum (the one with the giant elephant in the rotunda). My bus into the city arrived an hour early, but they let me in and for that hour each day, the entire summer, I had the museum to wander all to myself (and the cleaning crews).

How wonderful! Until recently, I was a D.C. girl, and that was one of my favorite museums, especially after having kids. 
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Mountain Laurel.

Ian Cameron, a Boston cabinetmaker turned frontier trapper, has come to Mountain Laurel hoping to remake himself again—into his planter uncle’s heir. No matter how uneasily the role of slave owner rests upon his shoulders. Then he meets Seona—beautiful, artistic, and enslaved to his kin. Seona has a secret: she’s been drawing for years, ever since that day she picked up a broken slate to sketch a portrait. When Ian catches her at it, he offers her opportunity to let her talent flourish, still secretly, in his cabinetmaking shop. Taking a frightening leap of faith, Seona puts her trust in Ian. What is it about Ian and Seona that will make your readers care about them?

Ian Cameron is driven by conflicting desires—pleasing his family and obeying his own honed sense of independence, but it’s his innate kindness and compassion that keeps rising to the fore.

Despite the limitations of slavery, Seona’s is an indomitable spirit. Naturally she hungers for freedom, but within those confines she seeks, and finds, self-expression.

How much prep work do you typically do before you start writing a novel?

The honest answer is, as much as is needed. That might mean years of pondering and throwing the occasional note into a file, or months of research, or weeks of intense plotting and character development. Most often it’s all three.

It looks as though you've become quite an expert on 18th Century American history because of the research you've done for your books. I'm going to have to dig deeper into your work!
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I always enjoy Charles Martin’s novels. He strikes a good balance between fast pacing and deep characterization. I just finished The Water Keeper , which takes a deep dive into the perils of human trafficking and the toll it takes not just on its victims, but those who rescue them.

What are you working on now?

I’m turning in book #2 in the Kindred duology, Shiloh (Mountain Laurel is the first), this summer and will be editing it over the autumn. I’m also thinking about what might be next.

Veronica Heley celebrated the publication of her 84th book in the spring of 2020, having been in the business for over 40 years. She is currently writing two gentle crime series set in different areas of London and two or three short stories a year for the Methodist Recorder. 
She has also written children’s and resource books, a biography, and some historical fiction, along with many articles and reviews. 
Veronica is involved with her local church and community affairs, likes to break for coffee with friends, and does the garden when she has time.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

If I have half an hour to spare in the evenings, I watch a re-run of Judge Judy.

She's such a character! 
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of False Conclusion.

Bea Abbot’s plans for the summer holidays are thrown into chaos when Bernice, her fourteen-year old ward, reports that a school friend is in trouble. Evelina Trescott’s uncle has died in a mysterious accident at their country house and her aunt, Mrs Trescott, is keen to hide Evelina away from the police. 
Evelina arrives on Bea’s door step catatonic, heavily drugged on prescribed medication and unable to remember finding her uncle’s body. Is she really a hapless victim being sheltered from harm by her family, or is she a wily criminal? 
The more Bea learns about the Trescott family, the more she realizes something is horribly wrong with Evelina, and soon finds herself drawn into a dark web of greed, abuse and murder.

What is it about Bea that will make your readers care about her?

Bea cares about other people.

How much prep work do you typically do before you start writing a novel?

I always research any medical problems that may occur in the story, and check that I know what I’m doing if I meddle with electricity, or fireworks, or legal problems.

Probably not a bad rule of thumb in real life either!
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Crow Lake by Mary Lawson, a writer new to me. It raises a problem that intelligent girls have to face . . . if you get the education you crave, what does that do to your relationships in the family?

What are you working on now?

Another Bea Abbot book. This one is to be called False Face, to be delivered early next year.

Franny accepts amateur sleuthing help from new flame Nevan Burns, a young fine artist (who’s also a fine young artist). He proves himself more than good company, and Franny finds herself swinging from one emotion to another, from joy to fear, from anticipation to dread. She’s not equipped to search for Grace alone. She’s even less prepared for what she finds.

And now let's visit with novelist Gayle Roper, author of the romantic suspense novel, Hide and Seek (December 2019).

Gayle Roper has been in love with story for as long as she can remember, whether reading one or writing one.

She has authored more 60 books over a fifty year career in Christian publishing. She has won the Carol Award, the RITA Award, a Romantic Times Book Report Reviewer’s Choice Award, and finaled repeatedly in the Christys. She has won the Holt Medallion three times and twice her titles have won the Inspirational Readers Choice Award.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I love to eat out (which is a companion to the truth that I don’t enjoy cooking).

I hope you're still managing that, despite the lockdown. Here in California, we're only able to enjoy outdoor dining, so the choices are relatively limited!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Hide and Seek. 

When Ellie runs away to protect her then nine-year-old son, Nick, she never expects to return. When her grandmother is dying, her heart demands she come home, despite the danger.

Gabe, small town police chief and high school football coach, is impressed with Nick’s talent on the gridiron but aware Ellie is keeping secrets. His responsibilities and his growing affection for both Ellie and Nick create massive conflicts.

Joey, Nick’s father, has been looking for Nick ever since Ellie spirited him away. When he finds the boy, his goal is to make Ellie pay.

Ellie’s fear, Nick’s growing independence, Gabe’s questions, and Joey’s vendetta force clashes and confrontations. Each individual must decide whether to continue hiding from past conflicts or seek the freedom and resolution of trusting in God.

What is it about Ellie that will make your readers care about her?

Ellie has made some foolish choices in her life, but she has determined they will not define her. While they force certain limitations, she works hard at reaching beyond them. She’s gutsy and strong. She loves Nick and does everything in her power to keep him safe. She cares for underdogs like Nick’s friend, Kenny, and Avery, the poor little rich girl next door.

When Ellie becomes a Christian, she learns to trust God to redeem not only her soul but her life situation. As she falls in love with Gabe, she can’t believe something this good has happened to her. She will not let Joey ruin what God has provided.

How much prep work do you typically do before you start writing a novel?

This particular novel was almost ten years in the writing. My problem was a good one to have in that I didn’t know enough about the emotional ramifications of abuse. My first editors, both survivors of abuse, laughed at my lack of understanding. I had to read and listen and learn to be able to realistically portray a situation I have not experienced. But this is what we do as writers. We get in the skin of people so we can tell their stories. Just as it takes longer to understand some real people, it takes longer to understand some characters. The struggle is always worthwhile.

How smart of you to use as your first editors people who are survivors of abuse. Experiencing abuse is a unique circumstance (not unique enough, of course), and one that sometimes comes about so insidiously that one can't fake its damage to a victim's emotional makeup.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I just finished listening to Lynn Austn’s If I Were You . (I’m a huge fan of audio books.) Great concept—a friend assumes the life of a British war bride/widow with the American family she’s never met. Then the story goes back to World War II and the experiences of the two women. The depth of historical detail is woven in so naturally you don’t realize the research Lynn must have done. Well written and fascinating. I’d love to know what you think of the ending.

I love audiobooks too! Because I walk every morning, I always have an audiobook going. I'll have to check into If I Were You. It sounds wonderful.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on my eighth Seaside, NJ, book, SeaChange. I’ve been writing this setting since 2000 in novels, a novella, and a short story. In SeaChange Janine has lost her job and been forced to return home to live, and Ross has had his life upended by events beyond his control. Family and its impact on our lives is an important thread as Janine and Ross learn to trust the Lord even when things don’t go well.

My favorite Seaside character, Clooney, appears with his usual gift that somehow saves the day.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of In High Cotton.

While the rest of the world has been roaring through the 1920s, times are hardscrabble in rural South Georgia. Widow Maggie Parker is barely surviving while raising her young son alone. Then as banks begin to fail, her father-in-law threatens to take her son and sell off her livelihood—the grocery store her husband left her.

Can five Southern women band together, using their wisdom and wiles to stop him and survive the Great Depression?

Since I read Ane's book (and really loved it), I'm going to share my short review of it here: 

A delightful slice of American life during the late 1920s. Set in South Georgia as the Great Depression descends upon the country, this novel focuses on the admirable, strong women of River’s End and their loves, enemies, challenges, and successes. Magnolia Parker and her colorful, close-knit circle of friends embody the best in people, resilient against the prejudices and injustices they suffer. Ane Mulligan writes as if she were one of Maggie’s contemporaries, teaming with charm and grit. A very quick, compelling read.

Ane, what is it about Maggie Parker that will make your readers care about her?

Maggie Parker is a plucky gal who doesn’t take flack from anyone. She’s fiercely loyal, giving, and determined.

What’s the most positive thing you can tell my readers about the state of Christian fiction today?

Christian authors have been on a campaign to write books that equal or surpass that of the secular world. I know I’ve been working hard to grow in the craft with each book I write.

I agree. Honestly, it seems the emergence of indie publishing frees traditionally published inspirational authors to explore genres, styles, and subjects previously avoided by traditional houses. That does level the "playing field" somewhat. 

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Where the Forest Meets the Stars , by Glendy Vanderlah. This is her debut book and the characters are so fully well-developed, and her writing has a depth of emotion normally seen in seasoned novelists. I couldn’t put it down! Not only that the end was not what I expected, which for a multi-published author doesn’t happen often.

Who doesn't love being surprised by a book's ending? That's great.

What are you working on now?

I just finished first round edits on the second book in my Georgia Magnolias series, On Sugar Hill, and I’m writing the third one, By the Sweet Gum. They are stand-alone novels, but all set in Georgia during the Great Depression.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I attended a Mick Jagger concert in Jakarta, Indonesia, and a riot broke out outside the stadium. While Mick sang, people were burning cars and throwing Molotov cocktails. We didn’t find out what was going on until after the concert was over and we walked outside to see what looked like a war zone. Possibly my most memorable concert experience.

My goodness. That's one time it was safer to be in the midst of a rock concert than not!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Black Midnight.

Three years before Jack the Ripper began his murderous spree on the streets of London, women were dying in their beds in similar circumstances as The Midnight Assassin terrorized the citizens of Austin, Texas. Now, with suspicion falling on Her Majesty’s family and Scotland Yard at a loss as to who the Ripper might be, Queen Victoria summons her great-granddaughter, Alice Anne von Wettin, a former Pinkerton agent who worked the unsolved Austin case, and orders her to discreetly form a team to look into the London matter.



The prospect of a second chance to work with Annie just might entice Isaiah Joplin out of his comfortable life as an Austin lawyer. If his theories are right, they’ll find the The Midnight Assassin and, by default, the Ripper. If they’re wrong, he and Annie are in a bigger mess than the one the feisty female left behind when she departed Austin under cover of darkness three years ago.

When the queen—known to her as Granny—calls on her for help in solving a crime spree occurring in London that no one else seems able to solve, she readily says yes without fear of becoming a target of the killer.

Reading your descriptions brings to mind the series, Victoria, which I love. It's fascinating to imagine your stories wrapped around Queen Victoria's granddaughter.

What’s the most positive thing you can tell my readers about the state of Christian fiction today?

Christian fiction is reaching more people now than ever before. As witnessed by genres like fantasy and true crime, there is something out there for every reader interested in the Christian market.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I just finished The King's Justice , Book 9 of the Maggie Hope series by Susan Elia McNeal. I loved that entire series so much that I binge read all nine of them in a row. And by read, I mean I mostly listened to the books on Audible during my daily commute to my office but also read on my iPad and phone. I guess that makes me a hybrid reader.

I'm always listening to an audio book when I walk (or, in the good old days, when I went to the gym). I'm a big fan of audio books and am going through the process of having audio versions made of all of my books now.

What are you currently working on?

I am finishing up a cozy mystery for Guideposts Books that is set in Charleston, South Carolina. The story centers around good friends, a missing statue, and an old hospital, and I cannot wait to share it with my readers in 2021.
