Mathieu Gallié est né en 1961 dans les Landes. Il grandit entre les aventures de Sherlock Holmes, Stevenson et Alan Quatermain et se consacre professionnellement à la BD par hasard. Il écrit son premier scénario sur une boutade pour le dessinateur Christophe Coronas, drôle de jeu auquel se prend Vents d'Ouest qui publie L'Empreinte des chimères en 1992. L'année suivante, le féerique Mangecoeur est nominé au festival de Bruxelles. C'est là qu'il fait la connaissance d'un autre nominé, Guillaume Sorel. Le courant passe immédiatement entre les deux complices. Tous deux férus d'héroïc-fantasy et de contes folkloriques, ils multiplient les collaborations fructueuses.
