We are all unique
We are all unique
An ancient Greek philosopher is said to have been turned into a woman for a period of time. Eventually he was turned back into a man. He was asked who had more pleasure in their sexuality, a man or a woman. Apparently, he said: if the parts of love be 10, nine are to the woman. More recently it was said (I don’t know who said it) that a woman’s investment in love was far greater than a man’s because a man only invests a few minutes where as a woman potentially invests as many as nine months to many years.

Hope and 'The Solomon Stone'
Hope and “The Solomon Stone”
Serial story/novel writing is a terrific medium in almost every way. It goes back to the development of newspapers in the 18th century. Charles Dickens wrote all of his stories (Oliver Twist, A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and others) as serials. When movies first arrived they were often created as serials. And we know how wonderful series’ are on television. In every case the emotional charge of waiting for ‘the next installment’ can bring a lot of pleasure.

is the joy gone from reading?
The end of reading
I teach English literature to a small group of grade 12 students in Toronto, Canada. I asked them recently if any of them had ever read a book for ‘pleasure’. Virtually none of them had. One had read “Twilight”. One laughed and said that the words ‘pleasure’ and books’ didn’t make any sense together. When I had asked the same question in past sessions the answer, overall, was about the same. If anyone had ever read anything they didn’t have to read for school, it was “Twilight” or “Harry Potter”.
