To John Cheever On His 100th Birthday

The constant drinking, chain smoking cigarettes, the state of being unfaithful to a spouse or other sexual partner, the dirty little secrets of suburban life and anxiety regarding America’s place in the postwar world.

No, this is not Don Draper and the show Mad Men, this was John Cheever. The master of American short story.

Could there have been a Don Draper without him?

You can listen as John Cheever reads from his book, "The Swimmer" in the link below to help you decide.

From the Poetry Center Archive: John Cheever reads "The Swimmer" | December 19, 1977

Don't Have To Live Like A Refugee?

Lately, 10% of the world has been doing just that with an average stay in a refugee camp of around ... 12 YEARS. The refugees must live in transit camps without heat or electricity.

Recognizing that the U.N. Refugee Agency have not advanced their transit camps in over the years, IKEA, a Swedish company registered in the Netherlands is partnering with UNHCR to create smart, flat-pack housing designed in a durable, easy-to-transport-and-set-up. It is still in a prototype stage. However, a smart design around tragic circumstances could make it better for many unfortunate families.

Time Act To Protect The Internet Before It's Too Late
You can put together your letter, link to EFF below

"... the FCC met to discuss new rules that could determine the future of network neutrality. There’s been a lot of news circulating about what the FCC's plan will contain. And while we haven't seen the text of the plan yet, we know the agency is still considering a set of rules that will allow Internet providers to differentiate how we access websites. But the FCC is clearly hearing the public outcry to protect the future of the Internet. The agency announced that they are seeking comment on wider set of initiatives that would stop ISPs from setting up pay-to-play Internet fast lanes. The FCC is opening a four-month comment window to hear from people across country about how their proposed rules will effect the future of our Internet. So we must take this opportunity to speak up — early, and often. EFF has created a tool to help. Visit DearFCC.org to raise your voice and make sure the FCC is clear on this point: We don't want regulations that will turn ISPs into gatekeepers to their subscribers."

Link to letter:

It's our Internet. We made it, and it has re-made us, changing the way we communicate, learn, share and create. We want the Internet to continue to live up to its promise, fostering innovation, creativity and freedom. We don't want regulations that will turn our ISPs into gatekeepers, ...

What Price Book Publicity?

Although, the article below never gives a dollar amount on what you should be paying to promote a book, I can' t help but ask this savvy writing community-

What do think the amount of money should be paid by authors to promote their book?

Of course, you probably know a 12-year-old who can design your site. Don't hire him or her. There are places to save a dollar, and website design and implementation isn't it. Your reputation, as an author, depends on how good you look online....
