Spring Dinner Rotation 2017

Spring is here. Can you believe it?

For me it signals….oh my gosh, I gotta get stuff done. Before I know it, it will be summer and my kids will be home. That means more play and less work.

Thursdays have kind of morphed into cook with chicken days. That’s because with non-stop activities on that day, it seemed easy to choose chicken as the main dish and run with it. Fridays are still fish but once Easter is here we can eat meat...

Easy One Pot Chicken and Rice

I was picking Big A up from a play date when her friend asked her mom what was for dinner. Her mom said “chicken and rice.” I left there thinking, I don’t have a chicken and rice dinner. I mean, I serve chicken and rice separately but not as a one-pot dish.

I finally tried it for dinner one night following this recipe on Crème de la Crumb. Although both my husband and Little D liked it, Big A (my chicken lover) thought it was too spicy. I used my homemade Italian seasoning which has red pepper...

How I’m Learning to Trust My “Inner Expert”

I don’t know about you, but I tire of the non-stop advice coming at me. There’s the emails about how I should be launching my books. The non-stop articles on nutrition, health, and what I should be doing to stay fit. With all the information available today, it can feel virtually impossible to keep up with it all.

Being a family nutrition expert means I have extensive knowledge in that area. But it doesn’t mean I’m an expert on you or even my own kids. The only real true expert of anyone I can...

The Next Frontier with my Kids: Learning About Food

When I started this blog Little D was a newborn and Big A was two. I wrote a lot about infant nutrition and pickiness in toddlers. I also wrote books about these stages including how to do dinner with young children.

My kids are both school-age now and it’s a different stage for sure. Little D (7) has began to expand his tastes. Big A (10) seems ready for more responsibility even though she doesn’t know it yet. My feeding strategies need some refreshing, and I have a new plan.

From School to Fo...

5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Me

When I announced the changes to my website, I said I was going to stop hiding. Of course, that doesn’t mean the desire to hide isn’t there, it’s just I’m going to act despite that feeling. When I first thought of doing an “about me” post these thoughts came up:

“No one wants to learn more about you, just write about something else!”

“People are going to find out you’re weird”

“It won’t get shared on social media”

But that’s just...

Forget What Recent Reports Say: Talk to Your Child About Weight

Lately, a string of news reports recommend what seems like straightforward advice: leave weight out of health-related conversations with your child. I agree with this, to a point. It’s beneficial not to harp on a child’s weight and to avoid commenting on weight in general. In other words, don’t engage in what researchers call “weight talk.” Rather, focus on healthy habits and the importance of taking care of one’s body. A 2016 report from The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) puts it this...
