Aspartame Induces Lymphomas and Leukemia in Scientificall...

Aspartame Induces Lymphomas and Leukemia in Scientifically Published Test Results
Dallas, July 19 2005 — Studies published in two scientific journals link the artificial sweetener Aspartame to lymphoma and leukemia in rats and spontaneous changes in thinking and behavior in people, the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network reported here Wednesday.“The release of two scientific studies -one in Italy, the other,Africa, warns that the artificial sweetener, aspartame, commonly found in diet drinks and 7,000 products worldwide, may cause more harm than once thought possible,” said network founder Mary Nash Stoddard of Frisco, Texas.“The first study was released this week, in the European Journal of Oncology by Morando Soffritti and coworkers,” Stoddard said.“This study clearly demonstrates a significant increase in several types of lymphomas and leukemia in rats. . . . These malignancies have increased dramatically, since the widespread use of aspartame,” said neurosurgeon and author Russell Blaylock, M.D., in Jackson, Mississippi. The second study is The dose-dependent effects of Aspartame on Serotoninergic Parameters in Albino Rats, by B.A. Iwalokun, Department of Biochemistry, Lagos State University, Lagos, Nigeria. Study results provided strong indications that aspartame may alter serotoninergic parameters and associated behaviors, Stoddard said. The abstract was published in the abstract book from the November 12 through 14th, 2004, Third International Conference on Mechanisms of Action of Neutraceuticals, at Maggie Valley Resort, North Carolina. An earlier 1993 study, published in Biological Psychiatry by Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Ralph G. Walton, M.D. shows: “Administration of this substance has also been associated with aggression and bingeing.” An evolving view in modern psychiatry is that although depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, impulse control disorders and eating disorders have been viewed as separate entities, they should be viewed as a continuum of disorders – all involving some degree of dysregulation of serotonin. “I believe there is overwhelming evidence that aspartame contributes to this dysregulation,” said Dr. Walton. In a 1997 lecture at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, published, 1998 in toxicology sourcebook, Deadly Deception Story of Aspartame, Stoddard told students:“Individuals are reporting, to ACSN, cases of brain tumors and non-Hodgkins lymphoma.”In 1986, Stoddard was diagnosed with a life threatening blood disease, eosinophilia myalgia, after adding aspartame to her daily diet. When she ceased using it, the illness went away. ______________________________http://aspartamesafety.com/web/press-...

Recent Case History Report of Adverse Reaction to Aspartame in Chewing Gum

CHEWING GUM WITH ASPARTAME - CASE HISTORY ADVERSE REACTION REPORTAge: 55 Sex: Female

Q. May we have permission to publish your data to help others?A.  YesQ. Name medical problems YOU experienced while using aspartame (tm NutraSweet/tm Equal).A. Headache, sleep disruption, numbness of hands and face, hives on body, blurred vision, weakness; diagnosed with cataracts that eye surgeon said were typical of someone using steroids (I have never used any and rarely take any headache or cold medicines, being unusually healthy).   I began chewing "5" gum in mid-September 2011 and found that I wanted it several times a day while at my desk at work.  I did not have gum at home so only used in office.  Noticed that I was suffering from severe congestion, worsening weakness, ringing of ears, and headaches by the second week of October.  Rapidly worsened to include numbness of hands and face, sleep problems, blurred vision, extreme muscle weakness, and hives on my chest and face.   Went to eye doctor for rapidly worsening vision and was told there was nothing he could do to correct my vision and that  I appeared to have a systemic problem.  Suspected it could be something I was eating when I realized that I was feeling better after a few days of rest and rapidly weakening by the end of the second day back at work.   Started carefully monitoring what I was eating and dropping items from my diet when I suddenly realized that I was feeling worse after having popped a couple of pieces of gum into my mouth - this was in late November.  Was shocked to discover that the gum which I thought had only sorbitol and one other sweetener also had small amounts of aspartame, which had cause my mouth to itch the first time I put a pack in a coffee and had avoided since.   Didn't see the ingredient in the small print at the bottom of the ingredients list and didn't think 3 sweeteners would be needed for a stick of gum. Immediately threw it away and eliminated from diet.  After several weeks I had noticeably improved my health and stamina, however vision was permanently hampered.  Went to a different eye doctor who diagnosed cataracts.  Have had cataract surgery on left eye and am about to have surgery on right eye.   Eye surgeon indicated that the cataracts had formed on the back side of my lenses as "an evenly 'spray-painted' coating" that was not normal for someone my age and  "typical of heavy steroid use."  I have not been on any prescription medications since I stopped taking the pill over 20 years ago (and that was the only one I was on).  I have never used steroids other than eye drops provided this week for recovery from the cataract surgery, and only rarely take any over-the-counter medications (simple antihistimines and Tylenol)  for colds or headaches, preferring to tough it out.  For heavy chest congestion, I take Mucinex for a few days at most.   I use Tom's toothpaste and only natural foods and sugars, with the exception of the gum that I had been using.  I do not exhibit any of the normal indicators of cataract risk.  Still have some ringing of ears and elevated blood pressure but otherwise my energy level is back to where it was before.   Q. Have you been diagnosed with any form of malignancy that coincided with your aspartame use?
(Aspartame caused brain, uterine and mammary tumors in lab animals in the original tests.)A.  NoQ. Did your symptoms go away or diminish when you stopped using the sweetener?A.  Yes - the symptoms have mostly disappearedQ. How long have you been Aspartame-free?A.  Since late November 2011Q. Did you see a Doctor about any of these symptoms?A.  Went to eye doctor; have discussed my situation with a regular doctor used for a presurgery checkupQ. Did your Doctor think it could be related to aspartame?A. Doctor for presurgery checkup thought I had self-diagnosed pretty accurately.Q. Did your Doctor advise you to stop using aspartame?A.  YesQ. Did you use aspartame while pregnant? (Give approx. amounts.) (Aspartame changes DNA and has
caused birth defects in lab animals.)A.  NoQ. Did you report your symptoms to the FDA (Food & Drug Admin.) or any other group?A.  No - tried to use their website but it is too complicatedQ. Name the specific products) containing aspartame you were consuming when you experienced
these symptoms. (Brand names.)A. 5 gumQ. On the average, what quantity were you consuming (how often, how much each time, etc.)A. 2 to 4 sticks per day, Monday through Thursday each week.Q. Did you ever feel addicted to your sweetener? (Describe)A. I definitely craved the gum; hadn't chewed gum in years prior to trying a few pieces in a co-workers office.  Went out and bought a huge pack and started chomping awayQ. How long had you been consuming aspartame before you began to experience any symptoms?Thinking back, had minor symptoms after about two weeks, rapidly worsened.A. FOR THOSE CONCERNED ABOUT WEIGHT: Did you begin using products with aspartame when
you began a restricted calorie diet or joined a weight loss program?  Yes - was chewing in afternoon to avoid other snacksDid you use aspartame products only for some of your meals to save calories?  Yes - instead of other snack foods.Did aspartame seem to help you lose weight at first?  Yes - through not eating chips and junk foodsWhat were the long term weight loss effects of using aspartame.
I started craving sweets and was eating cupcakes and cookies regularly which I had always been able to walk away from before. This stuff is horrible - I have been telling everyone to stay away from it and forbidden my sons to use gums or diet drinks containing it.  I cannot believe it is still on the market causing so much harm.

"ASPARBESITY": def. Syndrome created by ingesting the pharmaceutical sweetener, Aspartame. Traced back to approval of Aspartame sweetener in early 1980s, for use in foods, beverages, Rx & OTC medications, gums, etc. "Asparbesity" is creating havoc in our world's Food Supply. Popularity and availability of the sweetener increases. Healthcare professionals talk about the Epidemic of Obesity, yet offer little in the way of explanation for its origins. Founder of the international Aspartame Awareness Campaign, in 1987, Mary Nash Stoddard offers studies showing why she believes this phenomenon began in 1982 - escalating into a full-blown, medically recognized Epidemic in 2012.

MAYOR BLOOMBERG OUT OF THE FRYING PAN INTO THE FIRESTORM OF CONTROVERSY OVER PROPOSED SODA BAN

The Sinister Dark Side of Banning HFCS Sweetened Sodas In NYCJune 5, 2012

A proposed ban on large-sized sugary sodas may drive consumers to sodas filled instead with formaldehyde, as a breakdown product of Aspartame's 10% methanol content.

On June 12, in an attempt to combat the obesity epidemic, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will ask the Board of Health to ban the sale of sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces by movie theaters, restaurants, mobile food carts, and delis, though not grocery stores or convenience stores—so 7-Eleven's 44-ounce Super Big Gulp is safe. It also must be stated that there is not one grain of refined cane sugar in a regular Soft Drink. They all contain the highly-controversial, genetically-modified sweetener, High Fructose Corn Syrup. Another little known fact is this: the so-called Sugar Lobby pales in comparison to the megalithic Artificial Sweetener Industry, which literally has billions in its coffers with which to vigorously fight any threat to its dominance in the world.

The Bloomberg proposal would exempt not only diet sodas, but also fruit-based drinks, dairy-based drinks, and alcoholic beverages, no matter how many calories they contain.

Most soft drinks are sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup. HFCS is a corn syrup that has undergone enzymatic processing to convert some of its glucose into fructose to produce a desired level of sweetness. Astonishingly, the mayor has exempted so-called diet drinks featuring artificial sweeteners Aspartame and Neotame. The mayor seems to like them and his proposal will undoubtedly push more people into choosing them. There is evidence these drinks are extremely dangerous, some scientists call them 'neurotoxic,' potentially much more so than the drinks they would replace.

Aspartame and Neotame (aka Equal/ NutraSweet), which are used in more than 6,000 diet products, foods, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, have carcinogenic effects at a dose level within range of human daily intake—effects that are magnified when exposure begins during pregnancy. One packet of Equal contains 33 mg. of aspartame; one can of Diet Coke contains approximately 200 mg. of Aspartame and 20 mg of methanol. One-half cup of sugarfreeJello contains 40 mg. of Aspartame and 4 mg. of methanol. Ten percent of each aspartame molecule is methanol, which is converted, at temperatures exceeding 85 degrees Fahrenheit, into formaldehyde—which, in turn, is converted to formic acid. The other 90% is composed of phenylalanine (may cause mental retardation & seizures) and aspartic acid (caused 'holes' in the brains of lab animals.) These amino acids, when found in nature are harmless.  When ingested in isolation, as in Aspartame, they are neurotoxic.Aspartame has been implicated in the development of Gulf War syndrome. Huge amounts of diet drinks were shipped to Gulf War troops, who were drinking it, after it converted to toxic breakdown products in high temperatures. In the transcripts of the August, 1985 Senate Hearings on the Safety of Aspartame, the National Soft Drink Association stated their objections to the sweetener, saying "After a few weeks in storage in hot climates, there is little to no Aspartame left in a Diet Soda." Instead, only the toxic breakdown products remain. Aspartame has been shown to decompose into: methanol (wood alcohol), formaldehyde, diketopiperazine (brain tumor agent), and other toxins. Coca-Cola started using aspartame in Diet Coke in 1984.In a study on seven monkeys, five had grand mal seizures and one died, a casualty rate of 86%. Mary Nash Stoddard, Founder of Dallas/Washington-based Aspartame Consumer Safety Network, set up a hotline for pilots in 1987. Stoddard reports that pilots are having grand mal seizures in the cockpits of commercial airline flights due to Aspartame, and others are crashing the flight simulator at training facilities while in seizure. Aspartame also blocks production of serotonin—a chemical that regulates aggressive behaviors, sleep patterns and menstrual cycles in women.Diet sodas in general are linked to a 61% increase in strokes and heart attacks, according to the American Stroke Association. Interestingly, Alliance for Natural Health reports: the population studied for this landmark report consists of all New Yorkers! In a 1976 FDA document on GRAS substances, it stated: "High-fructose corn syrups are predicted to increase in production and to replace sucrose and invert sugar in up to 30 percent of their applications by 1980-85, based largely on relative costs." The document further states: " Informing the consumer of the sugar content of foods by appropriate labeling could lead to judicious use of sweetened foods. Choices could be made easier with a greater selection of less sugared foods in the market place. The Select Committee has weighed all of the foregoing and concludes that: Evidence exists that simple sugars, including glucose and fructose [and, therefore, corn sugar(dextrose), corn syrup including high-fructose corn syrup, and invert sugars] are cariogenic. … However,  Informing the consumer of the sugar content of foods by appropriate labeling could lead to judicious use of sweetened foods. Choices could be made easier with a greater selection of less sugared (artificially-sweetened?)  foods in the market place. The Select Committee has weighed all of the foregoing and concludes that: Evidence exists that simple sugars, including glucose and fructose [and, therefore, corn sugar(dextrose), corn syrup including high-fructose corn syrup, and invert sugars] are cariogenic.

Mayor Bloomberg needs to seriously rethink his proposed ban. It demonstrates a complete ignorance of science on his part. When government tries to force people to behave a certain way on pain of fines or worse, there is always the risk of unintended consequences, separate from the question of whether government should be telling people what to eat in the first place.

What even the most informed scientists know about food (and medical treatments) is continuously changing. Over time people will become better informed and hopefully, better choices will be made. When government officials jump in with heavy-handed punishment, there is too much risk they will get the science wrong, as in this case, or else, they will arbitrarily force today's science into law, even though science is consistently evolving. Don't forget - at one time, "More Doctors Smoked Camels Than Any Other Brand!" proclaimed the ad in the Journal of American Medical Association JAMA, a peer-reviewd scientific, medical publication.

The mayor, states opposition to his ban is "ridiculous." But is it? There are many reasons to oppose it, not the least of which is scientifically well documented and may be found in numerous independent peer-reviewed studies.

It must also be stated, said Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Founder, Stoddard, "If this legislation is dropped in favor of tax penalties to be levied on consumers who purchase regular HFCS sweetened Sodas - we propose Diet Sodas be taxed on a basis equal with the Regular Sodas."###(article taken from published research of Aspartame Consumer Safety Network and Pilot Hotline, since 1987, along with information on the proposed NYC ban of HFCS sweetened Large Diet Drinks, presented June 5, 2012, by The Alliance for Natural Health)

Food Q&A: Just what is ‘natural’ flavoring?Every week...

Food Q&A: Just what is ‘natural’ flavoring?Every week, ‘Today’ food editor Phil Lempert responds to your questions about ingredients, cooking and shopping
By Phil Lempert"Today" Food Editorupdated 4/7/2004 9:07:39 AM ET -Q: Could you tell me the latest about "natural flavor," which now seems to be not just in savories, such as soups and salad dressings, but in everything from unsalted butter to organic yogurt? My understanding is that it is a sludge of beef byproduct, high in free glutamic acid, a cousin to MSG, and that it adds flavor — and perhaps a bit of a mad cow — to everything we eat.  I avoid it like the plague, but it's getting harder and harder.  Is it legal in organic products? Many thanks. — Mary R Burlington, NC
A: We’ve all heard of products being labeled “artificially flavored” or “naturally flavored,” but I’m glad you are  curious as to what exactly “natural flavor” means, because even with all the regulations and new organic certifications it’s a confusing and misleading mess! The definition of natural flavor under the Code of Federal Regulations is: “the essential oil, oleoresin, essence or extractive, protein hydrolysate, distillate, or any product of roasting, heating or enzymolysis, which contains the flavoring constituents derived from a spice, fruit or fruit juice, vegetable or vegetable juice, edible yeast, herb, bark, bud, root, leaf or similar plant material, meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, dairy products, or fermentation products thereof, whose significant function in food is flavoring rather than nutritional” (21CFR101.22).
Certainly a mouthful! In other words, it could include beef by-products, but not necessarily.Any other added flavor therefore is artificial. (For the record, any monosodium glutamate, or MSG, used to flavor food must be declared on the label as such). Both artificial and natural flavors are made by “flavorists” in a laboratory by blending either “natural” chemicals or “synthetic” chemicals to create flavorings.
Gary Reineccius, a professor in the department of food science and nutrition at the University of Minnesota, says that  the distinction between natural and artificial flavorings is based on the source of these often identical chemicals. In fact, he says, “artificial flavorings are simpler in composition and potentially safer because only safety-tested components are utilized.
“Another difference,” says Reineccius, “is cost. The search for natural sources of chemicals often requires that a manufacturer go to great lengths to obtain a given chemical…. This natural chemical is identical to the version made in an organic chemist’s laboratory, yet it is much more expensive than the synthetic alternative.”End result: We shoppers wind up paying the price for natural flavorings, and according to Reineccius, these are in fact no better in quality, nor are they safer, than their cost-effective artificial counterparts.
So what about the flavorings used in organic foods? Foods certified by the National Organic Program (NOP) must be grown and processed using organic farming methods without synthetic pesticides, bioengineered genes, petroleum-based fertilizers and sewage sludge-based fertilizers. Organic livestock cannot be fed antibiotics or growth hormones. The term "organic" is not synonymous with "natural."
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) defines “natural” as “a product containing no artificial ingredient or added color and is only minimally processed (a process which does not fundamentally alter the raw product) may be labeled natural.” Most foods labeled natural, including its flavorings, are not subject to government controls beyond the regulations and heath codes.
The NOP food labeling standards (effective October of 2002) include a National List of Allowed Synthetic and Prohibited Substances. This list has a section on allowed non-synthetic substances, some with restrictions (205.605(a)) for products labeled “organic” or “made with organic ingredients.” Four categories of organic labels were approved by the USDA, based on the percentage of organic content: 100% Organic, Organic, Made with Organic Ingredients, and Less than 70% Organic. Natural flavors, then, can be considered NOP compliant as “organic” when used under the 95% rule (flavorings constitute 5% or less of total ingredients and meet that meet the appropriate requirements) if their organic counterparts are not available. “Made with organic ingredients” can be used on any product with at least 70% organically produced ingredients.”
According to the National List, under section 7CFR205.605(a)(9), non-agricultural, non-organic substances are allowed as ingredients that can be labeled as “organic” or “made with organic,” including “flavors, non-synthetic sources only, and must not be produced using synthetic solvents and carrier systems or any artificial preservative.” Other non-synthetic ingredients allowed in this section include: acids such as microbiologically-produced citric acid, dairy cultures, certain enzymes and non-synthetic yeast that is not grown on petrochemical substrates and sulfite waste liquor.
So, the bottom line is that you have to read those labels carefully. “Natural” might not be so natural, and that even some organic foods might contain some of these “natural flavors.” There are still many grey areas for consumers and producers alike.
Research is being done and attempts are being made to produce more organic flavorings, but the process is slow. We as consumers need to be more aware of what ingredients go into our foods and also demand that the government sticks to its responsibility to regulate these ingredients and make sure that the information is disclosed on EVERY label.###

ASPARTAME APPROVED VIA ILLEGAL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED TO FDA FOR APPROVAL IN 1981 - Drug Company later lost 9 mil Law Suit for Falsifying Lab Tests

Deadly Diet Soda, the truth about Aspartame

During the Gulf War, the military had pallets of Diet soda sitting out in the intense heat, this is how they discovered that Aspartame turns to formaldehyde at temperatures that exceed 86 degrees. My advice would be to not consume any product that contain any artificial sweetener due to the fact that they are changing the name because of public awareness.

Facts They Don't want you to know about Artificial Sweeteners

Food Safety Expert / Author, Mary Nash Stoddard In the original lab tests, ASPARTAMEcaused 4 kinds of tumors: Brain Tumors / Breast Tumors / Pancreatic Tumors / Uterine Tumors.

Results of these tests were criminally falsified - then submitted to FDA! When the temperature of Aspartame exceeds 86 degrees Fahrenheit [body temperature is: 98.6], the 10% methanol [wood alcohol] in ASPARTAME [aka NutraSweet/Equal] converts to formaldehyde [embalming fluid] and then to formic acid [toxin found in ant sting venom].

Aspartame may be the unidentified environmental trigger for: Brain Tumors - Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - Lyme Disease - PMS - Migraine - Mild to Severe Depression - Carpal Tunnel - Arthritis - Meniere's - MS [Multiple Sclerosis] - Epilepsy - Anxiety/Phobia Disorders - Alzheimer's - ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease - Eosinophilia Myalgia Syndrome [EMS] - Graves Disease - Tinnitus - Fibromyalgia - Stroke - Heart Disease - Lupus - Mental Illness - Attention Deficit Disorder - other "Difficult-to-Diagnose" Diseases.

Aspartame poisoning can trigger the following: Chronic Fatigue; Lupus; Graves Disease; Alzheimer's; Fibromyalgia; Multiple Sclerosis; Heart Attacks; Brain Tumors; Pancreatic Cancer; Breast Cancer; Uterine Cancers; and Mental Disorders.

Three Senate Hearings have been conducted on the safety of aspartame - yet no official action has been taken by our government. Aspartame Consumer Safety Network's Mary Nash Stoddard, representing a constituency of over 10,000 individuals worldwide has provided formal testimony at the Senate Hearing in 1987 and has on numerous occasions since then, registered formal objections both in writing and in person to the FDA; FAA; EPA; USDA; Presidents Bush and Clinton; Secretary of Defense Cohen and various members of Congress. James Bowen, M.D., outspoken anti-aspartame advocate had his license to practice medicine revoked in eight states because medical boards found not that he had "harmed" a patient, but that he was "delusional" about aspartame's adverse effects. Dr. Bowen [appeared on CBS Evening News with Dan Rather in 1984 talking about his case of Lou Gehrig's Disease which he reversed by getting off aspartame].

Dr. Bowen states, "Aspartame's adverse effects have to be non-specific, affecting virtually every organ of the body. Otherwise, it [aspartame] would have been off the market within the first two years!"

When ACSN's founder, Food Safety Expert, Mary Nash Stoddard met with FDA and FAA officials in Washington [87-88] they claimed their hands were tied.

They were unwilling to undo the wrongs [including criminal actions taken on the part of those submitting aspartame for approval] that had been committed in allowing aspartame to remain illegally on the market. The Supreme Court refused to hear the petition regarding aspartame's illegal entry into the marketplace - filed in Washington D.C. by Consumer Attorney and ACSN co-founder, James Turner, Esq. Does MONSANTO have a "gatekeeper" on the U.S. Supreme Court in the form of former Monsanto attorney, Judge Clarence Thomas?

Law suits have been settled out of court. In 1992, G.D. Searle [wholly-owned subsidiary of Monsanto Chemical, St. Louis, MO since 1985] lost their exclusive patent on the pharmaceutical sweetener and now there are over 10,000 products containing aspartame as both active and inactive ingredient. [It is not always listed clearly on the ingredient label.] Diketopiperazine [DKP], a known brain tumor agent, is a breakdown product of aspartame.

Dr. John Olney of Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, shows a 10% rise in the two specific forms of brain tumors that showed up in lab tests: Astrocytomas and Glioblastomas [glio cell tumors], since aspartame came onto the market in the early eighty's. Formaldehyde [embalming fluid], a breakdown product of methanol [wood alcohol] in aspartame is found on the EPA's list of hazardous chemicals. Phenylalanine [50% of molecule] in aspartame can change the chemistry of the brain and lower the seizure threshold, according to studies done by Dr. Richard Wurtman, head of brain science at MIT. Phenylalanine also blocks production of a neurotransmitter - serotonin, which may result in mood swings; sleep disorders; mild to suicidal depressions and aberrant behaviors in some. Prozac and L-Tryptophan both increase serotonin levels.

A newsletter published by the Association of Birth Defect Children, shows Phenylalanine in aspartame can be responsible for both mild and severe birth defects - including permanent neurological damage. Aspartic Acid [40% of the molecule] in aspartame can change DNA, caused holes in the brains of lab animals and is classified as a neuroexcitatory amino acid.

Aspartame can sabotage weight loss attempts. Many report a paradoxical weight gain while using the products sweetened by aspartame. A study done at Leeds University in the U.K. showed weight gains by the men in the study on aspartame. Physicians and researchers know what damage may be caused by ingesting wood alcohol. Two teaspoons have been know to cause death.

[Every 12-oz can of diet soda which contains 200 mg. of aspartame may contain as much as 20 mg. of methanol.] The effect of methanol on the eye, liver, pancreas and other organs of the body are well documented in the scientific literature. In nature, ethanol, methanol's antidote is always present to neutralize the toxin. There is no ethanol in aspartame for protection. Aspartame can be especially hazardous to anyone with a preexisting medical condition such as diabetes.

Manufacturers of aspartame and makers of the thousands of products which contain the fake sweetener, generously fund in various ways, the following so-called independent organizations: American Diabetes Association, American Dietetic Association, members of Congress, prestigious medical schools and others. [The New York Times - 11/15/96 - reported the American Dietetic Association takes money from the food industry to endorse their products].

At timed intervals of up to 6 hours, the radioactivity in plasma and several organs was investigated. Most of the radioactivity found (>98% in plasma, >75% in liver) was bound to protein. Label present in liver, plasma and kidney was in the range of 1-2% of total radioactivity administered per g or mL, changing little with time. Other organs (brown and white adipose tissues, muscle, brain, cornea and retina) contained levels of label in the range of 1/12 to 1/10th of that of liver. In all, the rat retained, 6 hours after administration about 5% of the label, half of it in the liver. The specific radioactivity of tissue protein, RNA and DNA was quite uniform. The protein label was concentrated in amino acids, different from methionine, and largely coincident with the result of protein exposure to labelled formaldehyde. DNA radioactivity was essentially in a single different adduct base, different from the normal bases present in DNA. The nature of the tissue label accumulated was, thus, a direct consequence of formaldehyde binding to tissue structures. The administration of labelled aspartame to a group of cirrhotic rats resulted in comparable label retention by tissue components, which suggests that liver function (or its defect) has little effect on formaldehyde formation from aspartame and binding to biological components. The chronic treatment of a series of rats with 200 mg/kg of non-labelled aspartame during 10 days resulted in the accumulation of even more label when given the radioactive bolus, suggesting that the amount of formaldehyde adducts coming from aspartame in tissue proteins and nucleic acids may be cumulative. It is concluded that aspartame consumption may constitute a hazard because of its contribution to the formation of formaldehyde adducts.PMID: 9714421 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]

Re:  USAF Official Stand Down - 9/26/97
Dear Secretary Cohen:
Thank you for the opportunity to share our findings and concerns with you regarding U.S. Military Pilots and those who work with them maintaining their planes and controlling military air traffic, etc. For the past decade [since 1987], I have maintained and operated a unique Pilot Hotline for the reporting of adverse reactions to their artificial sweetener, aspartame [aka NutraSweet/Equal.] During this time, I have been made increasingly aware of a risk factor to pilots that is capable of clouding their vision, fogging their brains and causing them to suffer grand mal seizures and vertigo in the cockpit while flying. I was first made cognizant of this situation when I gave testimony to the Senate in 1987. While there, F-16 pilot, Maj. Michael Collings took me aside and asked me to help pilots understand this substance that is capable of sabotaging their flying careers and possibly even taking their lives in the process. You see, Maj. Collings had experienced a grand mal seizure [just like the one my daughter had in 1985], from his sugarfree drink. When I met with Deputy Chief Flight Surgeon, Dr. Jon Jordan at the FAA in Washington in 1988, he expressed concerns, but told James Turner and me that there was nothing he could do to warn pilots against a danger the FDA refused to acknowledge. It was then I decided to start a hotline, with no funding, just to help pilots report anonymously, their adverse reactions. These reports have come in to me by the hundreds. Our warnings have been published in such notable publications as: USAF Flying Safety magazine [May and August issues, 1992], and Navy Physiology magazine earlier. Dozens of flying magazines around the world have published our warnings to the flying community. But, now it is time to republish those warnings.
An Air Force Stand Down, such as the one proposed for this Friday, September 26, will be completely futile, unless pilots are warned about the hidden dangers of using artificial sweeteners by a person, such as yourself, in a position of respect and authority. I understand this is something of a 'hot potato' issue - but, it's time for someone with true courage of convictions, to speak out and save lives. Many government officials have told us off the record they consider aspartame a high risk factor, and they do not use it themselves. But, they refuse to take that extra step and tell pilots in an official memo. Until that happens, lives will continue to be lost and planes and helicopters will continue to plunge to earth for no apparent reason.
In our files are case histories of pilots who have experienced grand mal seizures in the cockpit of commercial airliners. Yes, that is plural. It has happened on numerous occasions and we have the details in our files.
I have attached to this letter an article that was the featured cover story in Extraordinary Science magazine a year or so ago. Please notice the references to large numbers of flying magazines that have published warnings in the past.
Last Thursday, September 17, a top government official in Canada's Department of Transport, a former Air Force pilot himself, went on Canadian TV with me, warning pilots of the high risk factors associated with consuming aspartame and flying any aircraft. During the course of his five or so minutes interview he said, 'Whether it be operating a large commercial airline jet with passengers, doing lumber work with helicopters and everywhere in between, it's imperative pilots be made aware of aspartame products [including virtually all chewing gums - sugarfree or no], that could affect their performance.'
Secretary Cohen, I hope this week you will urgently issue an official 'Heads Up Alert' to military pilots, concerning their consumption of all products containing the artificial sweetener, aspartame.
Sincerely,
Mary Nash Stoddard, FounderAspartame Consumer Safety Network and Pilot Hotline [since 1987]www.aspartamesafety.com

FLYING HIGH ON ASPARTAME (Atkins Monthly magazine)

Atkins Monthly

Flying High [On Aspartame]
Mary Nash Stoddard

If you are a passenger in flight, you may want to save the article to read after you arrive at your destination. It is not our intent to unduly alarm the flying public. This is important information each of us needs to know.

Are pilots more susceptible to aspartame reactions than everyone else? This is a question I am asked frequently by members of the media. The answer is, "No, pilots are no more vulnerable than the rest of us." It is just that their jobs depend on a higher degree of mental and physical acuity than most. Their medical certification requires that there is no history of seizure activity, which aspartame is capable of causing in some.

The first pilot I met who had lost his medical certification to fly was USAF Major Michael Collings. I met him after hearing him testify at the third Senate Hearing on the safety of Aspartame. I spent time with him again when London's Thames TV flew us into Washington D.C. to tape a special documentary they were doing on the issue. Over coffee one day I asked him to relate more details of his case. I already knew how he traced the problems of tremors and seizures suffered from 1983 to 1985 directly to his patterns of NutraSweet consumption. When his duties took him to remote places where there was no diet soda or diet Kool Aid, he was free of the tremors, and whenever he resumed intake of artificially sweetened beverages, his tremors resumed, growing more severe, and culminating in a grand mal seizure that put him in the hospital and ended his career as a pilot. Collings' tremors and seizures ended on October 6, 1985, the day he quit ingesting NutraSweet. Michael told me how he had not once but twice turned down the invitation to become a member of the prestigious Thunderbirds.

They could not understand his decision, but he related to me that at the time, he could not fly 'wing tip to wing tip' with anyone. They will never know the real reason Major Collings rejected their offer unless they read it here.

The next pilot I met who had lost his "medical" was Brownwood, Texas pilot, Charles King. He suffered symptoms similar to Major Collings' and, like Collings, he only suffered them during his use of Aspartame products. The FAA took his anecdotal symptoms seriously enough to revoke his medical certificate and end his flying days for a few years. However, King fought the system until he miraculously got his license back in 1990. To date, his is our only real success story. We consider it a major breakthrough.

He hasn't lost his license, but he almost lost his life. After just two cups of NutraSweet hot chocolate, pilot George E. Leighton experienced blurred vision so severe he was unable to read instruments on his panel and very narrowly avoided a tragic landing. Safely on the ground, he related his story to the coworkers in his office. Two of them recounted similar symptoms experienced after brief exposure to aspartame. He claims 'this makes Aspartame particularly frightening to pilots, since in a single pilot IFR, full workload situation, partial impairment of capability can be just as fatal as total impairment (unconsciousness).' Leighton has become somewhat of an activist now, investigating suspicious incidents related to flying and attempts to raise the consciousness of the FAA and others about the issue.

Leighton wrote this letter to the editor of the US Air Force Flying Safety magazine after they printed an Aspartame Alert to all Air Force pilots:

"I would particularly direct your attention to the potential altitude effects of the methanol contained in Aspartame. To my knowledge, there has been no investigation of its binding to the hemoglobin (like carbon monoxide), thereby inducing hypoxia as suggested by Dr. Phil Moskal. Perhaps your Air Force Flight Surgeons would be interested in pursuing this from a medical viewpoint. I do not have the resources to pursue such an investigation and the FAA is stonewalling the whole Aspartame issue. The FAA's inaction is very likely politically motivated. As a General Aviation News article points out, Samuel Skinner the boss of the FAA as Secretary of Transportation at the time was formerly employed by NutraSweet's law firm, and Spotlight, April 6, 1992, reveals that his wife is presently employed by that firm. Later, as President Bush's Chief of Staff, Samuel Skinner was in an even more powerful political position with direct influence over all government agencies, including the FDA, the FAA, and your own DOD. Through his own past employment and his wife's present employment with NutraSweet's law firm, it would seem that NutraSweet had a pipeline directly to the top. It should be noted that without the 1977 direct intervention of Samuel Skinner (who was then U.S. Attorney for the Justice Department's Chicago office) and his associates, a grand jury would most certainly have indicted Searle/NutraSweet personnel for fraud and criminal behavior in concealing the deadly effects of the drug Aspartame from the FDA. The drug would never have been approved for use as a food additive and I would not now be writing this. I am continually appalled by the apparent indifference and inaction by various pilot-oriented organizations … FAA, AOPA, ALPA, and others … to the in-flight hazard posed by pilot's ingestion of diet drinks or other drinks laced with Aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal). In the Navy Physiology article, for example, they state: … 'Aspartame can increase the frequency of seizures … (susceptibility) to flicker vertigo or to flicker-induced epileptic activity. It means that ALL pilots are potential victims of sudden memory loss, dizziness during instrument flight (i.e. vertigo), and gradual loss of vision.'This certainly is a direct safety-of-flight item and should be dealt with as such. Instead, the Navy … ' offers a heads up to a potential problem.' Let me ask you a question. If you became aware of a component of every Air Force aircraft which was subject to sudden, catastrophic in-flight failure, would you simply write an innocuous 'heads up to pilots' at the end of an obscure article in your magazine? Of course not! You would take immediate emergency action to ground all aircraft until the safety-of-flight item was removed. Aspartame (NutraSweet/Equal) is that safety-of-flight item! I do not expect to see Aspartame banned from the marketplace at this time; that is an unrealistic expectation. My immediate, personal goal, however is to have all pilots informed of the potential safety-of-flight hazard posed by Aspartame. At least, they could then make an informed decision whether they wished to risk their lives and careers by playing airborne Russian roulette with Aspartame-laced products. Of course, a more appropriate question may be asked: 'Should pilots even have this right, when other people's lives are at stake?"

The following is a harrowing account by Capt. Harold Wilson:

"Each day was exciting, filled with both adventure and danger, life was
great. I had been chosen for a special assignment and sent to the
Aleutian's to provide an essential air service in an area of tremendous
distances, horrendous weather, and unbelievable isolation, where only a few
pilots had ever gone before, some never to return. Yet I thrived in this
environment, confident that I could handle any weather and mechanical
problems or whatever else got in my way. Feeling that I had arrived, life
could not get any better.  At the peak of health, I soared high on silver
wings, master of the sky.

Then it all changed.  In a moment of time my career was over, my life
forever changed. An event took place that for the first time was beyond my
control. No amount of training could have prepared me for this; it's not
covered in flight school or in the emergency checklists. A part of me died
that day.

One stormy August afternoon I was flying a charter flight high above the
Bering Sea when without warning I collapsed unconscious.

There was no other pilot on board; the aircraft was a sophisticated and
highly complex twin engine prop jet. One of the passengers on the flight
came forward and sat in the empty copilot seat.  He knew nothing about
flying, but was good with radios and was able to announce our plight using
one of the 5 two-way radios on board.  Over the years I had carried many
important and distinguished passengers but none so important as my guardian
angel, who guided the aircraft for the next 10 minutes.

The Coast Guard base at Kodiak, one of the largest in the U.S., and the Air
Force rescue center at Elmendorf were both put on alert, yet despite all
their military might there was little they could do except to listen on the
radio for what they believed was the imminent loss of the flight into the
ocean.  We were a thousand miles away far out over the ocean in one of the
most remote places on earth.

It was later determined that with no one at the controls the aircraft had
entered a high-speed spiral dive with the air speed rapidly accelerating to
where the aircraft would begin to disintegrate within the next 30 seconds,
then fall into the icy waters of the Bering Sea two miles below.

Having been a flight instructor for 15 years, and teaching people to fly, I
know that it would have been impossible for a passenger without knowledge of
flying to have controlled the aircraft during that time, given all the
conditions that existed, Including the passengers statement that the
aircraft was in a steep dive with the horizon rotating as we came down
through layers of dense storm clouds.

Arriving at deaths door at 400 mph, there seemed no human way out of this
one. By the time I regained consciousness, the aircraft had fallen to just 800 feet
above the ocean. Miraculously, by now in level flight and at a safe air
speed. It was a miracle. I have not been able to fully reconstruct what took
place during that time.

I recovered and flew on to land at Atka, a tiny village of 95 Aleuts located
on a small island in the Bering Sea.  We were more than 1000 miles from the
nearest road. As millions of people heard of the event on the evening news,
I spent the longest night of my life on that Island and pondered the events
of which I could not understand.  There is a period of time missing from my
life.

26 hours were to pass before I could see a doctor 1300 miles away.   Many
Americans are not aware that such remote places exist in their country.
For so many years I was used to helping people in medical emergencies.   Now
that I needed help, I could not call a local pilot–for that was me.  In the
gathering darkness at the close of that day I felt utterly helpless and
alone

Many people enjoy reading about themselves in the press, however, next day
when I read the Anchorage News (largest newspaper in Alaska) and found that
my story had made the headlines on the front page, it was far from being
pleasant reading.  Why me?  I was at the peak of health, now this. Why ?
As I searched for answers I went through several years of medical testing
which shed only limited light on what triggered the event.

After that event my life and my mind were in turmoil.  My career, which had
consumed most of my life for the past 25 years, had been torn away in a
sudden and cruel manner.  Being told that I would never fly a commercial
aircraft again was something I could not accept.  I went into shock, getting
around in a daze.  My world devastated.  In one day I went from being one of
the senior pilots, to being not only unemployed, but also unemployable and
seemingly unwanted, my career stripped away forever.  Words alone cannot
describe the magnitude of the void that now flooded my life. And, all because of a
sweetener? How sad."

George E. Leighton is a pilot and noise control consultant based in Orange, CA., and an FAA certified ATP flight instructor.

ACSN cofounder,  James Turner and I met with Chief Deputy Flight Surgeon, Dr. Jon Jordan at his FAA office, as long ago as 1989, presenting our concerns and looking for solutions for pilots. One of the answers was to establish a pilot hotline for the purpose of taking adverse reactions confidentially, which we did. Since then, based on our work, the US Air Force published two warnings in their official Flying Safety magazine in 1992. We believe the flying public and pilots have a right to know we have collected several reports of grand mal seizures in the cockpit in flight on commercial airlines.

Is aspartame the unidentified terror in the cockpit of every aircraft? Many pilots have reported adverse reactions to the Aspartame Consumer Safety Network Pilot Hotline. The effects of aspartame on pilots should be the concern of each member of the flying public.
