Jeff Michaels: Musician. Author. Entrepreneur. And still can’t find his way home without his GPS.

In the early 2000s Michaels was riding the high of life on the road as a touring musician, opening for the likes of Nellie Furtado, Sister Hazel, and Dennis Quaid (yes, the actor) when he abruptly found the rug swept out from under him. In one month’s time he lost his position with his band, his day job, and watched as his former bandmates went on to sign with a major label.

Undeterred, Michaels formed his own band, and since then has gone on to enjoy national success in his own right, landing songs on several major TV shows, including MTV’s The Real World, Teen Mom, and The T.O. show on VH1. In 2010 Michaels made his publishing debut as the author of Please Hug Me – I’ve Been Delayed: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need to Survive the Not-so-Friendly Skies, born out of frustrations while traveling and touring. The book quickly became a hit with airport-dwellers nationwide, and was a featured title at Hudson News and Pacific Gateway airport retailers, and voted a “Top 12 book to Chill Out To” by MORE Magazine for Women. He appeared on NPR, Chicago Tribune, as a leading travel expert, with published articles in SmarterTravel.com, North American Travel Journal, Life & Times, Smart Meetings Magazine, among others.

In 2014 Michaels added his second booked to his series, Please Hug Me—I’m an Office Monkey: The Only Guide You’ll Ever Need to Survive Life in a Cubicle, once again drawing on his past experiences, this time as an office worker. He hopes the heartfelt humor combined with practical advice will help readers through some of life’s more trying situations.

In his spare time Michaels designs websites, writes the occasional dirty novel, and works tirelessly to bring awareness to human rights issues with his creative endeavors. Michaels is an adequate chess player who rarely learns from his mistakes, and claims to be a level 10 Sudoku player (even though no such rankings exist). He resides in Boston with his amazing wife, and their small puppy, who helped write this bio.

Other writers cheerful chimed in with, “oh, you’ve got Writer’s Block”, and offered their solutions to help stimulate her creative juices. None seemed to work.

I don’t believe in Writer’s Block, hence why I refer to it as a ghost. It’s an apparation—if you will. And a scary one at that, if you allow it to actually take on a shape and form of its own.

(You know, like a ghost.)

My suggestions to help get her back on track are below, and are what I’ve always done. This might seem simple, but it works.

1. Set a deadline. Writing without a deadline is not really writing. It’s brainstorming. Learn the difference.
2. Distance yourself from your writing. You must allow yourself time away from writing for the magic to happen. This is Writing 101. Go for a run. Play tennis. Eat ice cream. Watch TV. Masturbate. Do whatever you need to do to get your mind completely off your writing.
3. Focus. When you do return to your writing, make sure you remove ALL distractions. No Facebook. No phones. No kids. No dogs.
4. Allow your thoughts to flow through you and when that tiny voice pops up that says this isn’t good, or this isn’t right, or you’ll never finish in time, do your best to ignore it.
5. Finish your assignment on time.

You’ll soon see that number five is not a difficult step at all. No matter what time you give yourself to complete your project (providing it’s realistic and you’re not trying to crank out a novel in two days), you will finish the job. Time is a funny thing. Play around with it. Use it to your advantage.

As for Writer’s Block? If you follow all of the above and find you really can’t write something down, no matter how much time you spend staring at the screen, chances are it’s probably not worth being written.
