Hopeless he’ll never be more than the boy who didn’t save his brother, 17-year-old Avikar accepts his life as the family stable boy, trying to forget the past. But when his sister, Jeslyn, is kidnapped, the thought of losing another sibling catapults him on a desperate quest. With his best friend by his side, and using the tracking skills he learned from his father, he discovers Jeslyn has been taken, kidnapped by one Lucino, the young lord of Daath, a mystical place thought only to exist in fables.

And Lucino has plans for Jeslyn.

His shape-shifting brethren feed off the auras of humans, and Jeslyn’s golden hue is exactly what Lucino needs to increase his power. The longer it takes Avikar to reach her, the more entranced she becomes with Lucino’s world, and the harder it will be for Avikar to set her free.

EXCERPT:

The wagons surrounded the site in a semi-circle. Sweat pooled in my palms. I had to take out the guards closest to that entrance. If I failed, so did the mission.
Get a grip.
I clenched the arrow in my right hand. Brushfire shifted nervously, sensing my fear. I rubbed her neck. I felt safer with her. She’d been with me since Jimri’s death. At night when the nightmares taunted me, I’d sneak out, riding until dawn forced us home. I’d rescued her from the burning woods, she’d rescued me from despair — today, I prayed both of us would make it out alive.

In Wicked Path: Book Two of the Daath Chronicles brother and sister are forced to opposite sides of Tarrtainya on a fast-paced adventure where the wildlife isn’t the only thing trying to kill them.
Three months have passed since Avikar defeated the Reptilian Prince, and he still can’t remember his battle with Lucino. On the hunt for answers, he returns to the scene of the fight and discovers a strange connection between his family’s dagger and the mysterious kingdom of Daath, and it seems only his distant father can reveal the truth behind it all.
Before Avikar can travel back home, Lucy assaults him in the market and forces him to flee to Nod Mountains—a place few dare to enter, and even less return from. With Raven and her childhood friend by his side, they must survive the treacherous journey through the pass with a vengeful Lucy hunting them. If they don’t, they’ll never see home again.
Jeslyn’s new life in Luna Harbor is the perfect remedy for her confused and broken heart. But when a group of mercenaries kidnap her beloved Grandfather, interrupting her daily routine as his jewelry apprentice, she's forced to join forces with the one person from her past she tried to forget.
And his assistance comes with a price.

How To Improve Your Chances of Querying Success

I've been at this game for a while now, so I thought I'd give some advice on what I've noticed help people progress through the querying process. So, here's my advice....

1. Social Media
As an acquiring editor, this is something I know is a big deal. An author needs to show they are capable of promoting their work and building a fan base before even signing a contract. So, while preparing the query, set up an author page on Facebook, get involved in Twitter, and set up a blog. Any other social media is also great. If you prefer Tumblr, Pinterest, etc, go ahead and set up a profile on those too. But Twitter is probably a must, since the writing community is strong there, along with twitter pitching and notifications of upcoming pitching competitions and other events.

2. Critique Groups/Partners and Beta Readers
Feedback is the best way to receive a personalized and objective view on your manuscript. It will help you improve where you have weaknesses, see typos, and reinforce your strengths. You can also help others by using your strengths to uplift their weaknesses. These people will become your friends, so will also be your greatest advocates.

3. Following Writers who are on "The Next Stage"
Whether it be on Facebook or Twitter, follow writers who are at the next stage of the querying process. Whether they be just signed, or published, it doesn't matter. They can give advice on direction, writing techniques that worked for them, and sometimes giveaway critiques and books. They can point you in the right direction, or guide you down the path that will work best for you through their example. I highly recommend following their blogs/websites.

4. Read
Especially read books by less well known authors in the genre in which you are writing. It's one thing to read the huge trendy books, but the books that are more obscure often have a uniqueness about them, rather than just mainstream appeal. Reading this variety helps learn how to create different types of voices and individuality with your own manuscript/s. So stop being a sheep and be an explorer! :-D

5. Help Others
Helping other people promote their books brings good karma. Being a writer can be competitive, but in general, being supportive is way more powerful than competing. Giving your blog for posting, tweeting, and/or sharing, will benefit you in the long run as you form friendships and respect with other writers. Be generous, be kind, while also being you.

Blo Tour: Remembering Kaylee Cooper by Chris Francis

Remembering Kaylee Cooper by Chris Francis
Remembering Kaylee Cooper is a middle-grade paranormal novel focusing on the life of an eleven year-old boy who becomes intrigued by the oddities of a first grade girl named Kaylee Cooper.
Constructing the setting for Remembering Kaylee Cooper
I had a recurring dream when I was ten, where a dark ghostly figure watched me while I played hide and seek with my neighbors around the old barn at the end our street. For the longest time it didn't speak, and never bothered me. It crept through the tall milk weeds along the cow pasture and observed us from afar. Despite it’s ominous presence, I thought nothing of my unusual visions - that is until one night, when I awoke in a cold sweat with a stinging handprint on my chest.
For years, before my neighbors grew up and became too cool for childish games, we spent endless hours running in and around that decrepit barn. The barn became the backdrop for many of our weekend and summer activities.
However, following that unforgettable nightmare, I saw the old barn a little differently. Riding past the dilapidated wooden building each day on my way to the bus stop, I couldn’t help remember my dream where an oddly shaped figure, leaned over me while I hid inside an old storage room.  A plastic doll covered in dust and cobwebs sat in the corner on top of an empty oiling can. Scattered along the wooden floorboards were marbles, blending in with the chipped concrete and rubble. A constant drip echoed softly off the walls and ceiling. To this day, I can still see the figure’s shadowy arm rise up over it’s head as it walked into the room. Long, boney fingers spread out around it’s hand. Scanning it’s surroundings for a moment, I remember the creature then turning to me, slapping my chest with one powerful thrust.
I’m not sure what was more vivid, the old barn, the faceless being that stalked me in my dreams, or the handprint I felt the next morning.
Whatever the case, these feelings - these chilling, dark feelings needed to come out in my story. When the protagonist, Alex Thomas, learns about a deadly house fire that took the lives of a family along Screaming Ridge Road, he is pressured to visit the abandoned home.
In my head, I saw that abandoned house like the barn from my childhood. Creating Screaming Ridge in my writing, I was able to draw from these curious memories. Alex Thomas is me. His experiences are my own. Kaylee Cooper is the woven personalities of children who I have taught over the years. The House on Screaming Ridge Road is the barn, and that figure - that gnarled, incongruous figure is the subject of the nightmare I had when I was ten years-old.
I never questioned whether the barn was haunted, at least not aloud. But growing up around the farmlands of Campbellville, Ontario, I often wondered if lost spirits from years past ever drifted aimlessly through the cow fields or took refuge in the empty rooms of that old barn.
If you were to ask me today if I believe in ghosts, or if there is something ‘out there’,  my eyes would likely glaze over for a moment, thinking back to my childhood. My answer is... Yes.

My New Book Deal - The Princess of Tyrone

New Book Deal: The Princess of Tyrone has signed with Curiosity Quills Press. The Princess of Tyrone is the first of seven books in the FairyTale Chronicles, based in a magical and technologically advanced galaxy.

The query -
Apolline is happy hunting magical creatures on her pirate infested outer-perimeter planet. She is a fantastic shot, and doesn’t flinch at the blood and guts of her kills. Never once did she consider she could be the missing Princess of Tyrone. All her life, she has heard the story of the Princess, cursed to sleep for eternity, unless her betrothed, the Prince of Oran, gave her true love’s kiss. Although Apolline knows she is betrothed, she thinks her fairy guardians arranged it out of ignorance of human ways. The thought she could be a princess is inconceivable. Then Allard appears. Handsome, charming—But he’s not hers to have. He’s betrothed, too. Her guardians warn her against her new found friendship, but she and Allard meet in secret anyway. Despite her rough exterior, he sees beyond her gun-slinging bravado, and their love blossoms. But the deadline for the sleeping curse is approaching. If Apolline falls in love with the wrong person, she could end up sleeping forever.

So yes, a fairytale retelling. All them them are loosely based ion fairytales, thus the name of the series. Some follow the fairytales closer than others. But they're all fun, adventurous and with great heroes and Heroines. Princess of Tyrone was originally a stand alone novel I wrote when I was eighteen/nineteen ish, but recently, I wanted to expand the world and use it to develop a deeper string of plots.

I'm excited to get this endeavor up and running. The whole series is already well under way and planned out... and half written lol!

I hope you all enjoy, and I'll keep you up to date with this crazy, fun read: The Princess of Tyrone.

Fire in the Woods Blog Tour: Is there anything wrong with a “nice guy?” by Jennifer M. Eaton

Lately, after reading novel after novel with romantic themes, I have to wonder… what ever happened to the “nice guy”?

I mean, is there anything wrong with being a nice guy these days?
Page after page I turn has been filled with overbearing, sometimes obnoxious males with egos bigger than their book’s word counts. I sometimes cringe, because I could never see myself falling for a guy like this.
Okay, I will be honest in saying I like the “bad guy” look… the whole denim or leather, with just a hint of stubble… I get that. It is fun to look at, but when it comes right down to it, I want the complete opposite of the alpha male that has become the “norm” in so many novels.
I think this is how the character David from my novel FIRE IN THE WOODS came to be. I don’t think it’s much of a spoiler to tell you David is from another planet. He steals the appearance of a famous human actor, and tries to pass himself off as a “local.”
If you can guess, it doesn’t quite work for him.
David, despite being a vision of teen hotness, is kind, shy, courteous, and really has no idea how good looking he is, or even what it means to be physically attractive. He couldn’t be less full of himself if he tried!
He was a great character to write, and I think he is very different from so many other heroes out there because he is really so believable.
David is the guy who you always wished you’d meet, and the guy you wished your daughter would meet (except for that whole ‘being an alien’ thing—that could be a bit of a turn off. I mean, no parent wants their kid involved in a long distance relationship, right?)
Anyway, David is proof that nice guys don’t always finish last. They may not get to the finish line as quickly, and they might not tick people off with their bad attitude along the way, but in my mind, that’s a good thing.
Well-mannered guys shouldn’t feel second rate. Ever.
Let’s hear it for the nice guys!

ABOUT FIRE IN THE WOODS: Publication date: September 2014
When a plane crashes in the woods near Jess’s home, the boy of her dreams falls out of the sky—literally. But David’s not here to find a girlfriend. He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.
But her father runs their house like an army barracks, and with an alien on the loose, Major Dad isn’t too keen on the idea of Jess going anywhere. Ever. So how the heck is she supposed to help the sweetest, strangest, and cutest guy she’s ever met?
Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.
Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.
As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

Blog Tour: Charming by Krystal Wade

Krystal Wade is back with a spine-tingling retelling of Cinderella!
In this edge-of-your seat, tension filled retelling of Cinderella, a vengeful schizophrenic pulls sixteen-year-old Haley Tremaine into his dark world. She must make a choice: save her abusive, alcoholic father and bitter little sister and allow the only people who've treated Haley like family to die, or seek out the killer and save them all.
The concept for Charming hit me when I wasn’t expecting or searching for new ideas. I was helping a friend come up with fairy tale redux plots. I told her she should write a scary Cinderella story, something without all the happy birds and glass slippers and perfectly sweet endings.
This friend actually told me she doesn’t write horror, wouldn’t even know how. And, me being me, I offered advice. I said, “It’s easy. You just…”One very rough plot idea jotted in Google Chat later, and I was in love. So much in love that I begged my friend not to want the story.“I don’t write horror, remember?”Score! After laughing about what we should call this book, which usually ended with IN BLOOD, I set it all aside and got back to edits on Shattered Secrets. But every time I heard a certain song by The Neighbourhood, Afraid, I thought of Chris Charming. Every time I heard anything by Lana Del Rey, I imagined Haley walking alone at night, during the day, scared, hollow. So I wrote the first few lines, and I adored them. As soon as I completed Shattered Secrets’s edits, I got to work on Charming In Blood. Yeah, I know, not quite as good as Charming, but just imagine using a deep voice and saying IN BLOOD.It’s fun. Really, really fun.My early research involved a ton of Google Stalking (they really should trademark that) of Deerfield, MA, what makes the town tick, what the houses were like (used realtor.com for that), the crime, the landscape. I had so much fun taking virtual tours with the realtor website and using Google Street View outside a house I mentally purchased and decided belonged to the Tremaine family.I ate, slept, and breathed Charming until the story went from concept the first finished draft, and it’s a story that I still find myself thinking about, wanting to go back to, giddy for the whole world to read! Thanks for taking the time to listen to me ramble! I hope you enjoy the book.<3 Krystal

CHARMINGThey say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and that's great . . . as long as you don't die.
Sixteen-year-old Haley Tremaine had it all: top-notch school, fantastic family, and a bright future, but all of that changed when an accident tore her family apart. Now, an alcoholic father, a bitter younger sister, and a cold headstone bearing her mother’s name are all she has left.
Chris Charming has it all: a powerful CEO for a father, a prestigious school, and a fortune at his fingertips, but none of that matters when he lands a reputation as a troublemaker. Struggling to follow in his father’s footsteps, he reaches out to the one person he believes truly sees him, the one person he wants: Haley.
Little do they know someone's determined to bring the two together, even if it means murder.

About Krystal Wade:Krystal Wade is happily married to the love of her life (don’t gag) and raising three beautiful children in the gorgeous state of Virginia. They live just outside Washington, D.C., and every day she wakes up to find herself stuck in traffic trying to get there. When she’s not working, commuting, or chasing after her three children (four if you count the man), you can usually find Krystal outside talking to her chickens like they’re the cutest things in the world (they are), or training her amazing dogs how to herd said chickens (which they love), or curled up on the sofa with a good book (why can’t that be 100% of the time?).

5 Interesting Facts about Witches
When I was writing Salt and Storm I took my childhood love of witches and did some research. Here are some fun facts about witches that I found, and how I used them in my books!
-      Contrary to popular belief, a male witch is not a called a wizard or a warlock. A male witch is simply called a witch. Warlock is actually a negative term that means traitor.
I used this because in my world, witches are good and demons are evil. I didn’t want any confusion about the roles, so I called men witches too.
 -      Witches are not otherworldly beings who can fly, change form or brew potions from the eyes of newts. They are just people.
I liked this for the same reason I like Batman (and yes, Sam & Dean): just a normal person who does extraordinary things. Of course, my witches have magic or don’t, but I like that they live with Nons and are mostly the same
-      Witches do not claim to have "supernatural" powers. They work with natural earth energies and involves the manipulation of natural energy to create a change in the world.  Which is why I made witch magic (essence) created, controlled and pull from nature. (vs. demon magic (void) which creates from nothing.
-      In 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, a great number of witch trials were held. 24 people died as a result of these trials. Of the 24; 19 were hanged, 1 pressed to death, and 4 died in prison awaiting their trial.
I used some real cases from the Salem Witch Trials in Storm.
-      The craft practiced by witches is generally for the good of the world.
I loved this because if there’s going to be magic then there needs to be a reason, so witches working to save humanity (ie. themselves since they are human) felt like a good choice.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?
You get to escape into a fantasy world, and get to carry that world with you, in your mind, wherever you go. I'd be sitting at the traffic lights, in Kat's world, or doing the grocery shopping, in Kat's world. I loved it, and felt a bit bereft when the story was finished.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
After my first book was published, I was terrified of writing another one that wouldn't be 'good enough'. For a few years, I dealt with this by avoiding writing anything other than 'work stuff'.
The National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) came to my rescue, forcing me to blurt out 1500 words a day regardless of quality, for a month, until it became a habit. The lack of time to re-read, edit and perfect yesterday's work was just what I needed.
You can't edit a blank page. Begin before you are ready.

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?
I first knew that I would one day write a novel when I was fourteen. I'm now forty, and here it is. I couldn't have written this one twenty years ago (for a start, there was no social media, which features heavily in the storyline).
All along, though, I was watching people. (Not in a freaky, stalky way - just 'people watching'). The best thing anyone can do as an aspiring writer is 'look up'.
About the Author
Emma Grey has two teenage girls, a three-year-old boy, a couple of businesses and another teen novel in the pipeline. Her first book, 'Wits' End Before Breakfast! Confessions of a Working Mum' was published in 2005.

Book Two: Fall

What do you do when you realize nothing in your life is what you’ve believed it to be?

When Arionna Jacobs loses her mother in a tragic accident, her world is turned upside down. She’s forced to leave her old life behind and move in with her father. Dace Matthews, a teaching assistant at her new college, is torn in two, unable to communicate with the feral wolf caged inside him.

When they meet, everything they thought they knew about life unravels. Dace has intimate access to Arionna’s mind, and something deep within her fights to rise to the surface. They don't understand what's happening to them or why, and they're running out of time to sort out the strange occurrences around them.

Their meeting sets an ancient Norse prophesy of destruction in motion, and what destiny has in store for them is bigger than either could have ever imagined. Unless they learn to trust themselves and one another, they may never resolve the mystery surrounding who they are to one another, and what that means for the world.

Arionna thought she understood sacrifice, but she never counted on her destiny tearing Dace apart. Ever since she nearly died, he has been consumed with guilt. Now it threatens to turn him into the monster he always feared.

It's up to Arionna to stop him before it's too late, but the path to hell is paved with good intentions, and Dace is hurtling toward self destruction.
