20,000 Copies Downloaded of "Christmas in Wine Country"

Make that 20,001 copies.
Thank you, thank you!
I so appreciate everyone who decided to take a look at my book "Christmas in Wine Country" during the free promo this weekend.
I self-published this book just under a month ago, thinking it would be read by my mom, mother-in-law, and friends. To now have it out in the hands of 20,008 people truly amazes me.
Especially since the cover has all the high-tech quality of a 5th grade book report. Actually, that's not fair to today's 5th graders who are pretty tech-savvy. So, the quality of a 5th grade book report in the 1980s.
Thank you, what a gift!
Now I hope everyone enjoys it!
All 20,018 of you.

House Swap?

Over the past 19 days of promoting my book "Christmas in Wine Country" I've heard a bit about doing a giveaway. I get the basic idea of this -- you give something away. In this case, I assume I'd give my book away. But I don't 100% understand the logistics of it or how it works with ebooks (anyone who wants to manage this process for me feel more than free to get in touch addisonwestlake@gmail.com)

But I've had another idea, and it's one I'm pretty psyched about.

I'm talking house swap.

And I'm talking, specifically, to the 9 people who've bought my book in France. C'est incroyable!

I love France! And when I say I love France I mean I love reading about it and watching movies set there because it's not as if I've been dripping with opportunities to spend significant time in France.

But maybe I can turn that around?

Here's my proposal: do you live in a cool, hip quarter in Paris? A historic and pastoral estate in Provence? How about, in exchange for a free copy of my 0.99 cent ebook, I get to live in your house for a week? And when I say "I" I mean my large family with several small children?

Not a good enough deal? How about we make it a week-long house swap? I live "just outside" the metropolitan hotspot that is San Francisco! (full disclosure: we're a BART ride away in a sleepy suburb that shuts down around 8pm. And we're living in the house we could afford, aka the house sliding down the hillside due to massive foundational flaws).

Think about it! Merci!

Crashing the Best Seller Party

Picture a party-crasher, some girl all dressed up who has somehow worked her way past the velvet rope, past the bouncer, through the secret side door into the VIP lounge. Her heels are too high, her dress is too short and she’s freakin’ psyched.
That is my book right now. Self-published as an ebook just 2½ weeks ago, Christmas in Wine Country is party crashing in the biggest way. And it’s not behaving itself at all. It’s the drunk one dancing in stilettos up on top of a table, hooting and hollering, whipping her bra off and circling it over her head like a lasso. Because my book has crashed Amazon’s Best Seller party.
Yup, it’s on Amazon’s top 100 best seller list in chick lit (that’s single women’s fiction in proper Amazon terms) and in humorous fiction. Alongside some wicked big names. Heard of Sophie Kinsella? Emily Giffin? Janet Evanovich?
My book has! And it came from such humble beginnings! Written at my tiny kitchen table in the midst of indescribable clutter, it has somehow cleaned itself up and talked its way into the party! And it is Tearing It Up.
“Wassup, Shopaholic!” my drunk, partying book is yelling over the loud dance music. “We’re freakin’ best sellers! High five me!!!” Of course, Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace (#12) is like “Whatever” to my book Christmas in Wine Country (#24) and leaves it hanging. But my book doesn’t even care—doesn’t even notice—because she’s too busy doing a shot with David Sedaris’ book Holidays on Ice (#84). And my book is like “You totally rock, Sedaris!!!” And Sedaris’ book is like “This is my favorite song!” and they run out on the dance floor together.
Anyway, that’s how I picture it.
Self-publishing! How else does this kind of thing happen?
All I have to say is, you writer-types out there—and you know who you are—waiting like wall flowers for the phone to ring with that super popular literary agent calling to ask you to the prom. Go out, buy yourself something super cute and sparkly at H&M, and take yourself to the prom. Put that book up on Amazon. Because what have you got to lose? This weekend, your book may be at the party, too. And my book will be like, “WASSUP!?!?!” and your book will be like “WASSUP!?!?!” and they’ll party together all night long.
