Renee Novelle: Writing for New Adults
For all of you who're interested in New Adult versus plain old Romance, please welcome today's guest blogger: Renee Novelle, author of The Boyfriend List who answers the question, "What is the New Adult about and why do you love to write for this genre?"
The New Adult genre of romance tends to focus more on those experiences and individuals who are in college or immediately after college. Usually between the ages of 18-25. The issues/drama/concerns that are presented in these books are usually more relevant to that age group, where as romance in general can focus on any age group and the experiences therein. This is a key point in many peoples lives, where individuals begin to blossom into the adult that they'll become. It's often a period of personal awakening, goal setting and life choices that will shape the path of the rest of their lives. So it's been great that a separate genre has finally been created to focus on this transitional period from youth to full adulthood.
I think writing New Adult is just fun. It's a great genre with so many opportunities to explore. I remember feeling so free and alive at that age, with so many possibilities at my fingertips and it's been great to kind of explore that again through my writing. There's a part of it that's very nostalgic for me, and I like to live vicariously through my characters, exploring different choices and seeing what the outcome will be. And there's also a part of it that's very liberating. With New Adult, I don't feel confined to certain unspoken rules that seem to be more present in other genres.

Don't Feed The Trolls
Bullying/trolling is a constant factor online, and it's surprising how tolerant moderators are of this behaviour. If you're an author, bullies/trolls will club together and systematically run down your books with vicious one star campaigns. It's not a big deal if you're well known but it can be horrible if you're new.
If you're venturing into writing, and you're wondering how to avoid the monsters online, here are some tips to help you spot them:
1. Bullies/trolls always cite "the rules". They tell you how authors are supposed to act, how reviewers are supposed to review, how you should promote a book, etc etc. Anyone who disagrees is subjected to a tirade of abuse. Fact is, there are no universal rules.
2. Bullies/trolls don't debate, nor do they stick to the point. Their point is to cause trouble, so they never give a straight answer to a straight question. If there's a good discussion going on, they'll interrupt by going off-topic, hoping to stir things up.
3. Bullies/trolls hide their identity. On Goodreads they are the ones with private profiles, on Facebook they never show personal pics, and on Amazon they have nicknames and don't list blogs, web sites etc. These people are cowards so they don't dare show who they really are.
What can you do about bullies/trolls? Ignore them. They want attention, they live for attention, so when they post, ignore whatever they say and respond to someone who is genuine. Then sit back and have a good laugh as you watch your troll go ballistic from lack of attention.

April Quinn: What Is Monster Erotica?

Monster erotica is a fictional story involving a hero or heroine having sex with a non human creature, such as a dinosaur, dragon or octopus.
They’re usually short 3,000-10,000 word stories and you can download them on your e-reader.
So what is the appeal? In my story, Captured by the Stegosaurus, Lina finds the greatest pleasure of her life when she’s at the mercy of a dinosaur. The sex is consensual, and my heroine discovers her sexuality while in the throes of passion.
I believe you should take your audience seriously when writing in this genre. If you expect people to pay (usually) $2.99 for a short monster sex story, then give them something worthwhile to read. Make them glad they plunked down $2.99 for a short erotic read. Make your story so good that they’ll want to buy any more stories you write.
One thing to be careful of, is to avoid anachronisms in your story. For example, if your heroine is a cave girl, then she wouldn’t wear a watch. If you’re already familiar with this time period, either by research or reading novels, then you probably have a good grasp of how people lived, what they wore, and what tools or implements were available to them.
Some things to ask yourself:
How did they measure time?
Did everyone live in a tribe?
What were their greatest predators?
What kind of language did they speak?
Even if cavemen and women spoke a different language to English, it’s far easier to have everyone in your story speak English. However, be mindful that they probably wouldn’t have used modern slang; words such as baby boomers, dawg, my bad, kewl, peeps, laters, etc.
If this genre has intrigued you, why not read a story or two and see what you like or dislike? You could even try writing your own monster erotica story!
