What A Forward Air Controller Does

The first two Hamfist books follow his tour of duty in Vietnam as a Forward Air Controller (FAC). Recently you may have heard retired generals mention that FACs are essential for an effective air campaign against ISIS.

If you wondered what a FAC does, you can read this post, which is a passage from Hamfist Over The Trail.

Enjoy!

Excellent Series On The Vietnam War

There is an excellent series of films about the Vietnam War available on Youtube. The first in the series details the beginning of American involvement and the enormous troop buildups in the early years, and has extensive coverage of the battle at Ia Drang (chronicled in Lt. General Hal Moore’s excellent book, We Were Soldiers Once…And Young) and the Battle of Dak To. There are interviews with veterans, spouses and widows, as well as lots of actual films taken during combat. Although each film in the series is fairly long (about an hour and a half each), I highly recommend the series if you want to know more about the history of American involvement in Vietnam.

Great Way To Donate To A Veteran Charity

There’s a really neat promotion going on at the Veteran’s Day Challenge. The authors, all military veterans, have pledged to donate all of the proceeds from Veteran’s Day sales of their listed books to a veteran charity. The G. E. Nolly book entered into the Challenge is Hamfist Down!. The donation will go to the Air Warrior Courage Foundation, a wonderful organization awarded four stars by the Charity Navigator.

There are lots of other books by some great authors, and now is your time to stock up and support a veteran charity at the same time. If you want to know what it was like for a grunt in Vietnam, you’ll really want to read Cherries, by John Podlaski. I highly recommend it!
