Joel YoungFrom Boulder, CO, USA

Founder and Creative Director at Jump Start Video LLC

Business Model: Agency$60,000+monthly revenue$50,000+monthly profitAll info self-reported by intervieweePublished January 24, 2020Reviewed and edited by Rita Epps

Who are you and how do you make money online?

My name is Joel Young and I started a video marketing and content creating company called JumpStart Video.

We create animated explainer videos, motion graphics, training videos, and social media content for all sorts of businesses and organizations. In fact, we’ve completed more than 12,000 projects for clients in more than 100 countries around the world.

Here’s a video we did for a client that appeared on TV:

Our mission is to provide businesses of all sizes with the opportunity to obtain high-quality video marketing content that is affordable for almost anyone.

Instead of spending thousands of dollars and waiting months on a finished product, we take our clients from concept to completion in just a few weeks.

And our average project cost is somewhere between $500-$750. This enables us to serve businesses and organizations with modest marketing budgets.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

Honestly, it looks however I want it to look!

That’s what I love about working with clients online.

I purposefully built my business so I could run it the same way no matter where I found myself.

My family and I enjoy traveling and are avid RVers. In fact, we sold our home and spent the better part of 2017 on the road exploring America (chronicled on our youtube channel).

We now have a home base again, but still travel for months at a time throughout the year.

So, sometimes I’m working at a coffee shop, sometimes I’m at my kitchen table, sometimes I’m sitting on a picnic table overlooking a lake or the mountains…

…and because all I need is an internet connection, I often like to change the scenery I work around.

When I’m at my home I typically start my day with a workout, then by walking my dog, and catching up with my wife and kids as they get their breakfast.

The truth is…

…very few days look alike!

I like to mix it up as much as I can, depending on what appointments I have scheduled for the day. Eventually, I’ll make my way to a quiet place and check in with my team and start my work for the day.

I like to take time away from my desk during the afternoon and come back to work a little after my kids have gone to bed most days. It helps me to be extra prepared for the next day.

I have been working to get my hours down below 8 hours a day.

But during busy seasons I often work 10+ hours a day.

The biggest hindrance to lowering my work hours is that I am constantly looking for ways to expand my business and always have a passion project or new idea I’m fleshing out.

Everything I do in my day-to-day work can be done remotely.

I never meet clients face-to-face, but often have phone consultations or video calls to catch up on important project details.

I communicate with my small team of US-creatives online or with phone calls, and we deliver all our projects via email to clients.

Zoë BiehlFrom New York, USA

Founder of Wild Lotus Content

Business Model: FreelanceAgency$3,500monthly revenue$3,300monthly profitAll info self-reported by intervieweePublished January 15, 2020Reviewed and edited by Rita Epps

Who are you and how do you make money online?

I’m Zoë and I am the founder of Wild Lotus Content.

I write and edit for many different businesses and publications around the world, mostly in the niches of emerging technology, the cannabis industry, and higher education. I have a small team of writers that help me create content for my clients.

I make a rough average of $3,500 in revenue a month, with around $250 or so in expenses on average, making my monthly total profit around $3,250. My expenses are when I outsource my writing to other freelance writers who I pay directly.

That said, this number does fluctuate quite a bit from month to month. For instance, I made about $4,600 in August 2019, while in September I only made $2,750 in profit.

What does a typical workday look like for you?

I wake up whenever I feel like waking up.

The only time I set an early alarm for myself is if I have a big deadline that day and need to get a lot of work done.

I usually work from home, but I try to go out once or twice a week to work at a cafe just to get myself out of the house.

I will work 2 to 3 hours in the morning and then take a lunch break. I usually like to take a little nap for working so hard.

Alison RakotoFrom Boulder, Colorado

Coach, Life Work Purpose at alisonrakoto.com

Business Model: Freelance$6,500monthly revenue$5,500monthly profitAll info self-reported by intervieweePublished January 9, 2020Reviewed and edited by Rita Epps

Who are you and how do you make money online?

My name is Alison, I am a human potential coach with a background in applied positive psychology and career coaching. For the last year, I’ve also been studying life coaching to increase my capacity to support my clients to achieve success.

As a coach, I offer career, executive, and human-potential coaching to empower smart, hardworking individuals, to achieve their dreams with confidence, joy, and grit.

I do this by leveraging my passion for human potential, my knowledge of positive psychology, my strengths as a career coach, and my own experience as a working mom, former executive, expat, and business owner.

My primary focus is women aged 30 to 45 and in particular mothers.

However, I also work with single women, women with no kids, and men who have similar goals/challenges to some of my female clients, such as being immigrants/expats/fathers and/or seeking out a pivot career due to a desire to connect their work to something bigger.

My primary revenue source is the career and executive coaching and resume writing/LinkedIn strategy.

For the last year, I’ve been transitioning my revenue model to the one that is more reliant on coaching, and moving away from the resume writing (and LinkedIn profile writing), except as part of my coaching service.

I am slowly working to build passive income streams, but I’ve not adequately leveraged this yet in my business.

What makes me unique is that I’ve managed to:

create my business while raising two kids – with one of whom I was on bed rest for the entire pregnancy;being a military spouse – whose husband was deployed for 8 months out of 12 until 2018;going to school online and remote;learning to work with and manage PTSD as a coach (supporting my husband);and all the while building my expertise as a career coach.

Over the last two years, I’ve invested about $12,000 in my education, obtaining an Applied Positive Psychology Certificate from the Flourishing Center in New York and then studying coaching through the International Coach Academy.

I’ve now paid for all my studies and I’ve started to also work with two coaching groups (HireClub & Collective Gain), in addition to my private coaching practice.

As an independent worker, my revenue varies.

But in general, I make about $2,500+ per month on my resume packages and about $2,000+ per month on individual coaching sessions.

I get periodic bumps to my revenue through small group coaching, special events or consulting contracts.

We also rent out our house in France for $1,300/month, and we make about $1,200 in Airbnb revenues through two bungalows we own in Madagascar (where we currently live).

For my current fiscal year, this means that I am averaging about $6,500/month in 2019.

And I’m on track to increase my revenue by another 30% in 2020 – by offering a twice a year blended group and private coaching program.

Start-up costs and educational fees have made for high expenses in the past.

However, I recently made my final payment for my continuing education, so now my expenses will consist of things like:

Web hostingActiveCampaignLinkedIn PremiumAndCoG SuiteGoogle Fi (referral code link for $20 off)and a few other memberships.

In total, this is an average of $450/month.

Previously, my monthly expenses were about $1,000 because they included $510 for my coaching program.

Victor ThomasFrom Tiburon, California

Owner at Thomas Digital

Business Model: Agency$48,000monthly revenue$20,000monthly profitAll info self-reported by intervieweePublished January 2, 2020Reviewed and edited by Rita Epps

Who are you and how do you make money online?

Hi there, my name is Victor Thomas and I own a website design business based out of San Francisco, California.

We specialize in designing and developing custom WordPress websites for small and medium-sized businesses, typically in the service industry. Our pricing ranges from $5k-$35k per website project, with the average website project being about $7.5k.

As of writing this in December 2019, I have 11 full-time employees. They all work virtually, with most of the team being in the Philippines.

So far this year we made just over $540,000 in revenue for the business.

It wasn’t always this way.

I started my business broke, desperate and clueless.

In my first year in business, I think I made something like $35,000 in total. This was about 9 years ago.

Since then the business has steadily grown each year.

Profit and loss so far this year (mid-December 2019)

What does a typical workday look like for you?

What I love most about my business is that I get to live life on my own terms.

I have the flexibility to make my own schedule and work when and where I want.

My typical day starts at around 5:30am.

I usually spend the first couple of hours working at a coffee shop a couple of blocks from my home which I walk to.

I use this time to work on the important but not urgent tasks for my business, which for me is usually content writing or general strategy.

$100k/month in FREE Google traffic

Then I usually go for a run, come back home and check my email.

If it’s Monday I’ll do a team meeting with my team. We meet once a week via Google Hangouts.

Most of my team is in the Philippines. Even though they work remotely they are my full-time employees. I’m lucky to have a very loyal and dedicated team, with my oldest team members dating back 7 years now.

I don’t really like doing meetings, so we only do one per week just to make sure we don’t forget what everyone looks like.

Working hard at my home office

I like to run my business out of Asana and block off my calendar each day for times to talk to new leads and existing clients.

I block off Tuesdays and Thursdays for no calls so I can focus and work on developing my business and catching up on project work for existing clients.

I have two small kids, so sometimes my day ends as early as 2pm when I have to pick them up. But mostly I’m working till around 5pm.

I don’t work weekends and spend quite a bit of time with my family, at least 3-4 hours a day, which is pretty good given my workload.
