Excerpt on Beck Valley Books!

Fun Excerpt on Beck Valley Books

The Cavern

The cavern narrowed slightly toward the rear. They didn’t speak. The quietness of the cavern, much like an empty church, made one want to whisper. The soft light illuminated their way.
At the rear of the cavern, they discovered a large flat rock with writing carved onto its face. Rob read the inscription slowly to the others.

KNOW ALL YEWHO ENTER HERETO PASS THIS STONEWITHOUT FEAR
YE MUST Navigate A HUMBLE QUESTREVEALING THY HONOR AND TRUTH POSSESSED
IF YE PREVAIL YE MAY PASSIF YE FAIL TAKE HEED, ALAS
THE HEAVENS WILL DARKENTHUNDER WILL ROLLTHE BOWELS OF EARTHWILL CLAIM YOUR SOUL
Rob swallowed as he read the final line. They stared at the stone, silent for several moments.Eleanor found her voice first. “What does that mean?” “Nothing. It just keeps nosy Humans away,” an amused voice answered.

New England has a rich history of different cultures and people landing on our shores. Occasionally secrets and treasures from those times are unearthed.  The Black Ledge Series reveals one of those ancient secrets. A dark secret.  A secret from the time of The Red Paint People, thousands of years ago, when humans were Aware of the magical world.

Camedon, a Keeper of the Realm, explains being Aware much better than I can. In this excerpt from The Keeper and the Rune Stone , Book I of The Black Ledge Series, the four Driscoll children have just met Camedon in a cavern on the beach of their new home:
The Keeper straightened, and the star on his fingertips disappeared with a tiny POP. “Human Beings are not the only intelligent life in the world.” He smiled. “They just think they are.” Jack sidled closer to the conversation. “What else is there?” “All sorts. You’ve heard of many in fairy tales. Elves, Dwarves, Fae, Water Sprites ...” the Keeper’s voice trailed off.“How come Humans aren’t aware of this so-called Realm?” Jack pressed. “They used to be—they used to be part of the Realm,” the Keeper said. “Thousands of years ago. Most of your myths are stories from that time.”“What changed?” Rob asked.“As science and technology advanced, Humans pulled away from the natural order. Eventually all interaction ceased to exist, and with it, awareness. Memories and stories of the Realm became nothing more than fairy tales.” The little man held out his hand. “Let’s try this again. My name is Camedon.”
How did these Magical Beings end up in Maine? The Red Paint People were a tribe of indigenous people who lived on the coasts of New England and Atlantic Canada regions of North America thousands of years ago. The name The Red Paint People arose from their use of Red Ochre to decorate their belongings, and themselves. They decorated tools, clothing, and the bodies of their dead in burial preparation. They were bold seafarers. Swordfish bones discovered in archaeological sites tell us they were navigating deep and treacherous waters in the Atlantic. Thousands of years ago, in canoes. And here's where the plot thickens. Archaeological excavations in Norway have unearthed tools and belongings with similar red marks/patterns to those discovered on the coast of Maine. Eerily similar red markings. Other clues point to trans-Atlantic travel. Rune Stones in North America that date long before the defined Viking Age.  A breed of domestic cat (the Maine Coon) shares DNA with the Norwegian Forest Cat. Strong similarities between some Native American and Ancient Norse myths suggest they gathered around the same campfire more than once. Did Elves and Dwarves stow away on one of the return trips to Maine?  It appears they did.
Our story then takes a darker turn, as things tend to do on the coast of Maine, but our Once upon a time began in a land far, far away.

A New Home, Old Secrets

Flora glanced wistfully out the window. “I wish we could go outside.” Rob said, “We can. Tomorrow. Let’s go back down to the library and check the fire. I promised Flora I’d finish the chapter we were reading,” He headed back through the doorway to the main part of the house. Jack and Flora followed and Eleanor brought up the rear. As she reached to shut off the hall light, she paused to examine the old two-button switch. She played with it for a moment, pushing the buttons off, and then on, their action interesting. As she turned the light on again, she caught a quick movement out of the corner of her eye.She turned, but nothing was there. A shadow from the wind moving branches outside the window? Must’ve been. She clicked the light off and hurried to catch her brothers and sister.

The Summer Solstice approaches. Are you worried where the Rune Stone is? You should be ...

Excerpt from The Keeper and the Rune Stone

“Suffice it to say they performed a magical ceremony involving a sacrifice,” Agnes said, making exaggerated eye contact with each of the three oldest kids. “But something went horribly wrong, as things tend to do when you go against the laws of nature, and they became .... well, they became parasites, really. Their very lives were dependent upon existing off others. “Literally,” the crow stressed, “existing off others. I’ll let Camedon explain the details of that to you later.” Again, she looked pointedly at Flora.“Because of the magic they’d dallied with, they took on some of the traits of the Dwarves, and were forced to seek refuge in the earth. No longer could they walk in the sunlight without pain ... death, even. But they weren’t truly earth dwellers either; so, they became night creatures, able to be above ground after sunset, but seeking the solace of the earth during the day.”“You know what they sound like?!” Jack exclaimed.“Yes, Jack.” Agnes nodded. “That is exactly what they are.”
