118: Ryan Lee – Lifestyle Business is NOT a Dirty Word!

Can you have it all? Can you have the money you need and want and not work 80+ hours/week? Is it OK to want money? Which comes first: the life you want to live or the business?

My guest started out helping severely disabled children at a rehab hospital, taught physical education at an inner city school and created one of the first fitness membership sites. He then went on to have a supplement company with a big office, lots of staff a 7+ figure income an health crisis and almost a divorce.

Now he has a beautiful home, great marriage, four kids and a business that gives him family time and a multi-million dollar income. His goal is to be done working by 3pm so the rest of the day is with his family.

What is amazing about Ryan Lee is he is continually morphing how he does business. He is clear about his clients and clear about himself. Known as a master of continuity revenue and membership sites, he recently turned his Freedym University into an all-continuity all-the time membership site. Think Netflix meets business education!

Ryan shares on this episode why it is important NOT to get emotionally attached to your business or idea, the one question that started his quest to change his life and business and how what he does every day to make sure he is still aligned with his goals.

Ryan Lee loves talking about himself in 3rd person.

He created his first web site back in 1999 to promote his part-time personal training business (he still had a full-time job at a Children’s Rehab hospital). But things really took off when he turned that simple site into a paid membership program.

Since then, he’s created over FIFTY different recurring revenue programs in multiple markets. Everything from membership sites and paid newsletters to subscription boxes, software and consumables.

You might have seen him featured on the front page of The Wall Street Journal or as a contributor to Entrepreneur. Or, perhaps, you read one of his books.

But what Ryan is most proud of is his ability to build businesses around his “lifestyle”. He is always done by 3pm so he can spend unlimited time with his wife and four children.

Now, Ryan has taken all his resources. Tapped into his deep network. And created the most complete training resource for anyone looking to turn their ideas into “continuity” income.

117: John David Mann – The Cellist and The Sniper

What happens when a cellist and a sniper get together to write a few books? Magic. Perception shifting magic. At least that is what happens for me everyone time I read one of the books they have collaborated on based on Brandon Webb’s experiences as a Navy Seal Sniper, Sniper Training School re-creator and CEO of a media company valued at $100mm.

How does someone write a book with another, especially when they come from such diverse backgrounds and perspectives? It may surprise you to learn that they are actually closer in perspective than the title of this episode may lead you to believe.

As a trained cellist and composer, from a family of renowned conductors and musicians, John shares how he connects with the authors he writes with, how his latest effort with Brand Webb, Total Focus: How to Make Better Decisions Under Pressure, is a culmination of years of working together and what drives him to work with others to spread their messages to the world.

For John, “writing is music”. For me, reading his words are like listening to the most beautiful piece of music ever played. Words have the power to shift thinking, to transform the reader forever.

With their latest collaboration, my thinking is now transformed.

John and I speak about Total Focus, working with others, and his and my favorite words. After you listen to this episode, tweet out your favorite word to @thelaurasteward and @johndavidmann.

John David Mann is an award-winning author whose writings have earned the Nautilus Award, the Axiom Business Book Award (Gold Medal), and Taiwan’s Golden Book Award for Innovation. He is coauthor of the New York Times bestsellers The Red Circle (with Brandon Webb) and Flash Foresight (with Dan Burrus) and the Wall Street Journal bestsellers Real Leadership (with John Addison) and The Slight Edge (with Jeff Olson). He coauthored the international bestseller The Go-Giver, hailed by Adam Grant as “the most important parable about business?and life?of our time.” His books are available in two dozen languages and have sold more than two million copies. His 2011 Take the Lead (with Betsy Myers) was named by Tom Peters and the Washington Post as “best leadership book of 2011.” www.johndavidmann.com

116: Brandon Webb – From Top Gun Sniper to $100mm company – Want to know how?

Well there are a few more steps in-between the title of this episode. I had to bring back my guest Brandon Webb because his latest book, two in just a few months, is to important to not be talked about. Reading my advance copy of Total Focus: How to Make Better Decisions Under Pressure shifted me out of lethargy faster than anything I have read in a long time. Maybe it was timing. This show, and my guests are the best kind of therapy. Each week my perspective gets shifted, last week’s show with Wayne Pernell prepared me for the impact of this one. Hopefully you have had a chance to listen to it and many of the others. They build, they shift and most of all, according to you, my listeners make thinking happen.

Seven principles laid out, each more powerful than the last. Why powerful? Their simplicity. Not that they are always simple to implement but simplicity in the Why? And you know I love the Why? question!

Integrity, authenticity and most of all a driving need to share his experience to help others learn and grow is why Brandon is back on the show with an open invite anytime. So lets go into some things we cover on this show:

Why front sight focus with total situational awareness is the key to success in anything you do.
How you can Embrace the Suck and come out the other side.
Why you need to create a yearly vision theme and how it can change everything.

At the end of the day, it is the choices we make that define who we become. Let me know what choices you are making after you listen to this episode. Find me on Twitter @thelaurasteward

After leaving home at age sixteen Brandon finished high school, and joined the US Navy to become a Navy SEAL.  His first permanent assignment was as a helicopter Aircrew Search & Rescue (SAR) swimmer and Aviation Warfare Systems Operator with HS-6. In 1997 his Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) package was approved. He would class up with over 200 students in BUD/S class 215, and go on to complete the training as 1 of 23 originals.

As a SEAL he served with SEAL Team 3, Naval Special Warfare Group One (NSWG-1) Training Detachment sniper cell, and completed his last tour at the Naval Special Warfare Center (NSWC) sniper course where he served as the Naval Special Warfare west coast sniper course manager. Throughout his career he completed four deployments to the Middle East, one to Afghanistan and would later go back to Iraq in 2006-7 as a paramilitary contractor. His proudest accomplishment in the military was working as the SEAL sniper course manager, a schoolhouse that has produced some of the deadliest snipers in US military history.

An accomplished and proven leader, Brandon was meritoriously promoted to E-6 while serving as an advanced sniper instructor at NSWG-1, and was recommended and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (E-7) his first time eligible while at the sniper course. He has received numerous distinguished service awards including the Presidential Unit Citation (personally awarded to him by President George W. Bush), and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation medal with “V” device for valor in combat. Webb ended his Navy career early after over a decade of service in order to spend more time with his children and focus on entrepreneurship (both his parents were small business owners).

Today Brandon is focused on building his media and ecommerce business. He is the founder and CEO of the Hurricane Group, a U.S. & European based media and ecommerce company focusing on military entertainment, news, and monthly clubs.

Brandon is regularly featured in the media as a military and business subject matter expert. He has contributed to ABC’s Good Morning America, NBC’s Today Show, FOX news, CNN, the BBC, SIRIUS XM, MSNBC, and The New York Times.

Webb is a New York Times bestselling author. His books include, The Red Circle (St. Martin’s Press) Among Heroes (Penguin-Random House),  Benghazi, The Definitive Report (Harper Collins), The ISIS Solution (SOFREP books), and The Power of Thought (self-published). He has two books scheduled to publish in 2017. The Killing School: Inside the World’s deadliest sniper program, is set to publish with St. Martin’s Press May, 2017. Total Focus: How to Make Better Decisions Under Pressure, publishes with Penguin Random House in the August, 2017.

In 2012, after losing his best friend, Navy SEAL & CIA contractor Glen Doherty, in Benghazi, Libya, he founded The Red Circle Foundation (RCF)a non-profit with a 100% pass through model; every dollar donated goes to the mission and business partner donors pick up the Foundation’s overhead. RCF is focused on supporting families of the Special Operations community through emergency memorial, medical, and child enrichment programs (camps & scholarships).

Brandon is an active member of the Entrepreneurs Organization New York (EONY), and enjoys spending time with his tight circle of amazing family & friends, being outdoors, and flying his experimental aircraft upside-down. He splits his time between his residence in San Juan, PR and Manhattan, NY.

115: Wayne Pernell – Curious George Speaks Significance

“Your best self is not static. You are in a relationship with yourself and you change.” Wise words from my guest Dr. Wayne Pernell. His first book, Choosing Your Power, my copy is quite dog-eared, sets the tone for his latest book, The Significance Factor.

What am I here for? Why did I wake up today? How do I define success? How do significance and failure relate? These are only a few questions Wayne poses on the show. Yes we answer how you can find your own personal answers to those questions. Beyond those questions though we talk about how to discover your own true values, why they are important to write down and how to then live them, authentically in all aspects of your life.

One of my favorite parts of this interview was the Threshold Trigger exercise Wayne walks us through on the show. It is a brilliant piece of work that can immediately snap you out of whatever role, limiting belief or mood you are in.

Wayne shares how being Dr. Pernell was not allowing him to be who he really is. We look at how he shifted it and why his wife played such a key role in that change.

So much more, we could have talked for hours. He will be back!

Insightful, witty, and playful, Dr. Wayne Pernell brings close to forty years of experience helping leaders at all levels to attain new levels of break-through success.  Dr. Pernell knows the power of clarity and focus as foundational elements in relationships and leadership and in service of his clients, he developed his DynamicLeader® programs.

As an internationally acclaimed and #1 best-selling Author, Speaker, Certified High Performance Coach, and morning television guest, Dr. Wayne Pernell’s work has positively impacted thousands of people around the globe.

After earning his doctorate in clinical psychology, Dr. Pernell engaged in the business world and began working with mid-to-senior leaders across a broad array of organizations and now invites participation in the  DynamicLeader® programs where clients achieve greater productivity, a renewed sense of focus and purpose, and even greater levels of influence.

As a fourth-degree black belt, coach, and author, his inspiration spread to the community. As Sensei Wayne, his students learned to continually assess available options in an effort to best minimize or eliminate conflict. Drawing on concepts from Bushido (the “Way of the Warrior”), Sensei Wayne teaches those he serves to get through tough spots, reducing conflict in their lives, emphasizing the power of choice even during extremely high-pressure situations.

Also affectionately known by friends and family as “Dr. P,” this man of many talents is no stranger to the stage and is likely to show you his personal brand of magic in everything he does.  While no longer performing, Dr. Pernell is an accomplished magician.  These days he’s likely to pull out a “M.A.G.I.C.” formula in the service of helping his clients. (Ask about this one!)

In addition to his DynamicLeader® programs, since 2005 Dr Pernell has been with the Pride Institute, the country’s foremost dental practice management consulting group.  And now, as the Director of Organization Development and one of the Senior Consultants, Dr P continues to focus on leadership development, helping his new and seasoned clients across the country to break through to new levels of success.

114: Roger Wernow – Is Your Medical Data Safe?

What does HIPAA mean? Why does it seem to be implemented differently at each medical office you go to? Can they refuse to give you your medical information in a timely manner? What MUST they give you and when? Can you be charged to get it? What can a medical provider never do with your medical information?

I caregive for my mom and am in doctor’s offices and hospitals frequently. I am appalled by the documents I am required to sign and how they vary from one office to another. It is also a problem of staff training.

I recently was asked to sign a form that would give permission for the office to give out my contact info and other information to essentially anyone they wanted (3rd party affiliates, doctors, billing companies and others was the phrasing). They grouped the doctor under there and said if we do not sign the doctor cannot call me even about results and the staff cannot call me about appointments. Is that allowed?

My guest helped draft the law that became HIPAA here in the United States and is the leading expert on its implementation for both medical practitioners and those Business Associates that do business with them.

If you have medical data then you will want to listen to this episode and understand your rights and what you need to do to make sure you can access your data when and where you need it.

Roger Wernow is the President of RMW Associates, a technology-oriented management consulting company specializing in health care practice management since 1985. The company focuses on assisting healthcare providers to modernize operations, select and implement EHR and practice management systems while complying with Medicare and HIPAA regulations.

Mr. Wernow was a founding board member and co-chair of the Sharp Work Group (a 2000 partnership of private industry and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid services charged with development and implementation of the HIPAA regulations).

He is a frequent speaker to Medical Societies and industry groups on EHR selection and implementation issues, HIPAA privacy and security, the HITECH act and most recently MACRA/MIPS effects on healthcare entities. Prior to RMW, he served as a Manager of International Systems Consulting for PepsiCo International and as a Financial Analyst for CIT Financial.

111: Gary Govanus – Geek to Cruise Guru!

I have not taken a vacation since 2010. That is not something I am proud of. It is just how things have gone. I have been on business trips to speaking gigs and conferences but no vacation time where you unplug and recharge. Am I feeling that lack of recharge, away from my routine? Yes. Do I want to go away? Yes. Do I see how I can do that easily while caring for my mom? No.

Vacations have been proven to increase productivity, lower stress and improve health yet so many of us don’t take trips and when we do they just don’t live up to our expectations or the hype we have heard about that particular trip.

My guest today is a long-time friend who I met when I started my first company and he still is one of my mentors in life. He left the geek world and now helps people take vacations.

What I love is he asks lots of questions of his clients BEFORE he ever books them on a trip. Why? So he can make sure that he can provide them the best vacation they can possibly have. You see, vacations are not so simple for most people and the wrong booking can waste money, energy and time.

So how do you avoid the cruise from hell and have the cruise of a lifetime? Listen as Gary shares insider tips and tricks to book the right cruise by asking the right questions!

Thirty years ago, as a mere young whelp of lad, computer weenie Gary Govanus was dragged kicking and screaming on his first cruise. Convinced he would hate it, especially seeing the tiny cabin and the twin beds bolted to the floor, he set off with his ever-patient wife on his first cruising adventure. He desperately wanted to go back to his happy place where he could write his geek books, teach his other computer weenie friends and live happily ever after installing computer networks.

Thirty some cruises later, it is obvious his first impression was wrong, but he was enough of a man to admit it. He likes it so much that he decided to spread the gospel of cruising. He abandoned the fun filled, exciting world of computer networking and became a travel agent. Now, his goal is get to everyone to go on vacation. A lofty dream, but he is making daily strides. Find him on Facebook @govanus

110: Diane DiResta – Creating your Speaking Sandwich

Picture the audience naked.

Wondering what I am talking about? Next to death it is rated as the top fear for people. Still not certain? Public Speaking is what I am talking about and picturing the audience naked is a strategy often suggested to minimize the fear reaction. Does it work though? Is there a better way?

How do you put together a speech, presentation or workshop that captivates the audience and most of all moves them to take action of some sort? Is there a better way to setup a room?

What is a Speaking Sandwich and can you get it in a NYC deli?

One of the things I do that makes me money is deliver keynote speeches, workshops and webinar-style keynotes. People say I make it look easy. It is not. Yes, I speak from the heart yet my perfectly scripted plans are rarely delivered as planned but there is a lot of prep that enables me to do that. My mom says I was born with a mic in my hand. For the average person, that is not their truth.

My guest has written a compendium, I do love that word, for speaking. She shares how you can deliver that perfect scripted yet off-the-cuff speech, how you can push past your fear and engage the audience from moment one and she does it with some levity and a few perfect examples of how not being perfect is the best way to deliver a knockout presentation.

Diane DiResta, CSP, is Founder and CEO of DiResta Communications, Inc., a New York City consultancy serving business leaders who deliver high stakes presentations? whether one-to-one, in front of a crowd or from an electronic platform.   DiResta is the author of Knockout Presentations: How to Deliver Your Message with Power, Punch, and Pizzazz, an Amazon.com category best-seller and widely-used text in college business communication courses. www.diresta.com. She has unique ability to get to the core of the message and translate complexity into simplicity.

Diane has media trained sports and entertainment celebrities, including the NBA, WNBA and USGA.

Diane is Past President of the NYC chapter of National Speakers Association and former media trainer for the NBA and WNBA. Diane is a Certified Speaking Professional, a designation held by less than 12% of speakers nationwide. And her blog, Knockout Presentations, made the Top 50 Pubic Speaking blogs.
