Training my Dragon

Dragon_for_Mac_107x127

Hello readers. This post is going to be a little different, and I ask you in advance to please ignore all typos and mistakes. You'll get to see why in a moment.

a couple of years ago, I experimented with dictation for writing my books, instead of typing. I did so for about a month, and then return to the keyboard having found the dictation was too slow. Recently I have a chance to talk to other authors who were using dictation, and I learned from them that I should have persevered more...

Russia

In June 2015 we took an incredible trip to Russia. After a few days in Moscow, we sailed north along the Volga-Baltic waterway to some towns deep in the Russian countryside (Uglich, Yaroslavl) and then north to some lakes. After stopping at the remote island of Kizhi, we headed along the River Neva to spend a few days in Saint Petersburg. What an amazing country. Here's just a few of the photos from our trip.

What I learned by going round in circles

roundabout_signEver feel like you are going in circles? Sure you do. Everyone does, right?

I'm the type of writer known as an outliner, which means I like to plan my whole story in advance and make detailed notes on every scene and every step of the plot, start to finish. It's the engineer in me. It gives me a framework. Like a building is designed by an architect long before construction.

The worst feeling in the world is when you are halfway through writing your book and it all starts unravelling. Yo...

This book will keep you turning the pages to discover just how many types of demon walk among us, and some of them are bad-ass! As is the head-vampire-woma...

Polar Day, by Julie Flanders

Do you like suspenseful horror? Do you like vampires? Do you like Alaska?

Combine the two and you get a great couple of books by Julie Flanders. In 2013, she brought us Polar Night. Now, brand new last week, is the sequel, Polar Day. I’ve yet to read it, but I lovedPolar Night, it was a real page turner!(Read my review of it.)

Wonderful thing about Tigger…

TiggerSmallThis is the special story of Tigger. I have shared most of my life with cats, typically 3-6 of them at any time. Though Pippin is my current favourite, Tigger remains the most dear to me. Let me tell you why.

When I was a young teen, living in rural Oxfordshire in England, my parents promised me a new cat. We drove a ways to an animal shelter (we always adopt cats). Naturally, I wanted a kitten and there were hundreds walking around in a huge indoor space. I had my heart set on this tiny, cute...

Newsletter

Hello everyone,

I sometimes receive questions or confusion about the difference between subscribing to my blog vs. newsletter.

Look to the right and you can see two options

Free Newsletter
Follow Blog by Email

Most people subscribe to my blog so that they can get a notification of my blog posts without having to check in on the site every week or so. This is of course the best way to follow a blog (other than RSS which is less in vogue these days.) One post = one email. Simple :)

So what’s the newsle...
