Indie Author Day 2016

untitled-design15October 8th: Tamara and I drove out to Yuma, Az to take part in the Yuma County Library's Indie Author Day, organized by the SELF-e program.

SELF-e is powered by Library Journal and acts as a kind of matchmaking service to help Indie authors get their ebooks into the library system. It's slowly rolling out across the US and Canada, so not every library is a part of the program yet. SELF-e contacted me a couple of years ago and asked if I was interested.

Um… yes! I grew up in libraries. T...

Bloodwalker – Mystery/Thriller by LX Cain

Here's a great new release – one of the best books I've read this year. See my review below and then an interview with the author LX Cain. Don'tmiss the giveaway at the end! Bloodwalker isn'tfantasy or sci-fi but I totally recommend it as a tremendous read.

Lightning flashes. Another child disappears…

Zorka Circus’s big top roars with laughter and cheers, but when it moves on, children vanish.

Circus Security Chief Rurik suspects a killer hides among the performers, but they close r...

Russian Cosmonaut Museum

DSC_0104In 2015, we spent a couple of weeks in Western Russia, including some spectacular days in Moscow. As a space-nut, there was no way I was going to miss a trip to the Memorial Museum to Cosmonauts. We braved a 3-line trip through Moscow's subways (which are incredibly clean and efficient, by the way), and were confronted by this huge memorial. The museum is underground, beneath it.

There were no English speaking guides, and though some of the exhibit signs were in English, most were not, and...

You want to be an author? 7 basic tips

writingtoolsA lot of people ask me, "I've always wanted to write a book, but where do I start?" It's a great question. There are more writing tips out there than fish in the sea, but here's seven basic tips:

1. The time is now, don't wait for the muse

I'm sure there are millions of people with the excuses: "I'll write when I have time," or "when the kids leave for college," or "when I'm working less hours," or "when I have the perfect idea," or "when I'm in the mood."

Here's a truth you won't like...

Bookbub

BookPileIn February 2016, I ran a week-long promotion with Bookbub. For those unfamiliar with the name, it's a service that emails readers informing them of free or heavily discounted books. It is reckoned to be the best promotional service for a book, guaranteed to reach tens or hundreds of thousands of readers interested specifically in a genre – in my case, Fantasy.

Bookbub US is notoriously difficult to get accepted into. They are very picky to guarantee their readers get the best deals. It's...

Mass Transit

Do you like mental powers? Do you like spaceships? Get them both in this sci-fi short story…

MassTransit400x600

Mind over matter is more than a cliche.

Controlling starships with her mind is all Emily ever dreamed of. Her graduation from the Telekinesis Traffic Control Academy is assured, unless Dylan, an irritating and cocky fellow student, ruins it for her.

The utmost concentration is essential to land a ship from orbit. When Dylan’s jealousy turns to sabotage, thousands of people will die if Emily...

Writing Out Of My Comfort Zone – Katherine Dell

Harmless_JustFrontCover_Final This week, friend and author Katherine Dell is taking over my blog to tell you about her intriguing, upcoming book. Over to you, Kathy…

About a year and a half ago, I wrote a blog about stepping out of my comfort zone. I talked about facing my fears and taking the plunge into the uncertain, because … great things don’t come from inside your comfort zone! That blog post was centered on me finally learning to ski, which for some reason, I was petrified to learn how. Hey, turning into a human...

Horror: Malachite Mine

Do you have limited writing time but big goals?

Do you have limited writing time but big goals?

A guest post today, by my fantasy author friend, Autumn Birt.

Are you a writer? If so, are you meeting your writing goals?

Writing is a passion, one usually cobbled together from stolen moments and highs of inspiration. But if you get the writing bug and you get it bad, finding enough time is often a source of frustration.

Why write more?

Because fans like to read more. That is my number one answer. I’m a reader as well as a writer. I...
