National Novel Writing Month-destroyer of weekends and free time...

Available for pre-order now at
Barnes & Noble, Kobo, and Apple!
NaNoWriMo is going full swing, but I told myself I wouldn't do it this year. Nope, not me. Instead, I want to recover from the months of editing and rewriting I've just wrapped up for Forgotten Valor (to be released Nov 20, pictured above), Shadows of Valor, and The Golden Ship. But here's what's going to get me. I've got an insane urge to just jump right in there, 7 days late, and do it anyway.
Ideas are churning. Plot points and twists are spinning, looping, and somersaulting through my head on the way to work, when I'm eating dinner, when I'm practicing Karate. I can't stifle them. I can't ignore them. And the longer I try to the more they press on my mind. The story is calling, and I'm not sure I can resist much longer.
So, long story short, I've got a long weekend coming up and I might just throw sanity and peace to the wind and jump into the frenzy after all. So, on the off chance I jump in and do it, the posts and reviews might become sparse this month. If not, I'll work on taming the book I wrote for it last year, Fearless, and see if I can get it up and running by Christmas. Nothing like a zombie book release just in time for the holidays.
Well, I'll keep you posted. Wish me luck! Either way I'll be busy this month.

New Release March 14: The Quest for Truth (Paranoia #2) by Jonathan-David Jackson
Today, I am happy to announce the release of a sequel I've been looking forward to for some time. I don't usually get the inside scoop for releases like this, other than for David Estes books, so I'm excited to be one of the first to tell you about it. I think those of you who like humorous, quirky books will like this one and its predecessor (The Quest for Juice).

The Quest for Truth by Jonathan-David Jackson
Description: Oscar's orderly paranoid world has been turned upside down by the Red Fist Army and he now lives in exile. With the help of Penelope, Jim, and Mr. Hodge the hedgehog, he must free their hostage town, take on the Red Fist, and discover the truth about Dr. Boggs.
However, when things go wrong and Oscar loses his closest friends, he has to rely on an unlikely group of refugees with surprising mental abilities. As he continues on his journey to freeing the town and himself, he finds out more of his own truths than he ever imagined, and absolutely nobody shoots lasers out of their eyes. Continue Reading...

New Release and Review: Fade to Black by Tim McBain and L.T. Vargus

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Today I'm announcing a new release and sharing my ARC review of Fade to Black by Tim McBain and L.T. Vargus. The second author may sound familiar to you if you've been following this blog, because I loved her previous book, Casting Shadows Everywhere. While I can't say that I loved this book as much as I did the other, I can say that I really liked it.
Now available on Amazon!

New Release: The Freeze by Patricia Hamill

When life gives you lemons, dig deep and stay there. Ignore reality and pretend everything is fine. Make the kids go to school, pretend they aren't hungry. Make them pretend not to see the worry on every face, poorly hidden. Life doesn't give us lemons, it gives us ice. It gives us ice and hail and destruction. Life doesn't give, it takes. In a frozen future where survivors have taken refuge in an underground tunnel system, Andrea, sick of writing sappy, optimistic essays for what the adults call school, decides to try her luck on one of the scavenging crews. With the help of a boy she likes, she pretends to be a boy and joins the team. But the job isn't at all what she expected, and she soon finds herself separated from the team, lost and alone in the frozen city.
*****
Today is release day for The Freeze, my fifth published book. I wrote this back in November 2013 as part of the NaNoWriMo challenge. That year I had decided not to participate, but halfway through, I relented and managed to finish just in time on November 30. Unlike some stories, this one just flew. Everything worked, and the ideas kept coming.
Anyway, I had a lot of fun writing this, and I hope you’ll check it out. I can tell you that I look forward to finding out what you think. I still get a thrill when I see someone has left a review.
Now available in Kindle and Paperback on Amazon. Check out this and other books by Patricia Hamill on her Amazon Author Page.
Don’t forget to add The Freeze to your shelves on Goodreads or Shelfari!

Review: The Future Memory Man by Shanna Lauffey

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Another fine addition to this series. Kallie and Marcus are getting cozy in their new life together, but Connor continues to pop up and throw in complications. The main focus of this story seems to be the lingering ambiguity of Connor’s past and future selves as well as a question of just how much of an influence his father had on his character. Kallie in particular has trouble fully trusting him, but cannot resist helping him when he asks.
As always, I enjoyed the sense of nostalgia that fills these stories. The photos (even one of Kallie and Marcus’ cat) are all pretty nice surprises whenever they pop up. They’re a nice touch and something that make this series unique. They show up well, even on my cheap, black and white Kindle.
Another thing I enjoy, though a lot of it in this book was over my head, is the theoretical exploration of time and distance travel. It’s fascinating, and I love how the science gets mixed in with the story. I think the only stuff that was really over my head, however, was what Harlan was explaining to Connor, and I pictured Kallie’s eyes glazing over as the two discussed it.
Another cool thing the book explores is the idea of the paradox and the time loop. I think it just touched on it, mostly setting up for the next book if my guess is right.
The one thing this instalment lacks is a clear and present danger. An imminent threat. The villains are mostly absent and everything seems to have shifted to information gathering mode. There’s still some action, it’s just not as much the center of the story this time around.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I recommend it to folks who like a well-thought out time travel story that fits plausibly into the real world.
I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Release Day for Avalee and the Dragon
Happy Release Day!
The day is finally here. Avalee and the Dragon is live on Amazon!
As a huge fan of fantasy and swords and sorcery books, I'm excited to announce this book, the first one I've written in that genre. I read through the story again last night (you know, pre-release jitters and last looks), and I feel great about this one.
Title: Avalee and the Dragon
Author: Patricia Hamill
Cover Art: Jack Baker Design
Released: February 14, 2016
Genre: YA, Fantasy, and just a touch of Romance (clean).
Description:
Every ten years, a maiden must be sacrificed to the dragon to ensure the safety of the village for the next ten. This year, Avalee has been selected.
But unlike those before her, she has no intention of submitting to her fate. No, she intends to fight, and not just fight, win. If everything goes as planned, the dragon will never trouble her village again.
Then again, things seldom go as planned. . .
Intrigued?
Pick up a copy at Amazon:
(Hint for international readers, replace the .com or .co.uk in the amazon link with your country's website suffix. The rest of the link's the same. :-D)
Do you love getting your books in both ebook and paperback?
The paperback is in review, so it should follow the Kindle edition soon. I always turn on matchbook, so if you're planning to get the paperback and want a discounted copy for your Kindle, too, I'd say wait for that. I'll post when both the paperback and the matchbook are live.
