The martial arts industry combats childhood obesity with Century’s, “Lil’ Dragon” program. Over eight hundred martial arts schools across America are catching kids early and teaching children from ages four to eight how to respect their bodies as well as their parents and teachers. They learn to kick out calories while learning important life skills such as stranger awareness, anti-drugs, health, nutrition, and exercise. According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, “one in three children is overweight.” The Lil’ Dragon program addresses this issue head-on, (and stomach) by providing children a whole life approach to making choices that effect both their mental and physical health. The best part is no one sits on the bench. Everyone is included. Century’s Lil’ Dragons’ catches all kids early and helps them develop terrific life skills that will make them not only a better citizen but a healthier one as well.

14 Reasons Why Martial Arts is Better for Kids Than Team Sports:
1. Self-defense: okay that may be the obvious reason but it’s true. One of the reasons why people freeze in a confrontation is because they simply don’t know what to do. The martial arts train you to deal with confrontation both verbal and physical. Beware not all styles of martial arts will give you real world self-defense so look into the art before investing time and money into training.
2. self-confidence: There are only two ways to build your self-confidence. One is to set a goal and achieve it and the other is to make a promise and keep it. The martial arts gives you set goals and standards to achieve to earn your next rank, improve technique, overcome obstacles and more.
3. Belts and ranking: Belts and ranking plus patches, trophies, and other awards give recognition to the individual’s achievements. This will build confidence by reaching one goal at a time on your journey to Black Belt and beyond. Stripes, belts, and other awards are a great way to motivate, inspire, and track ones knowledge and progress.
4. Individual achievement: no one sits on the bench: One of the great things about training in a school is you get to push your fellow classmates to a higher level as they push you to achieve. You get the benefits of training “with or on the team” but when you compete it’s all up to you. It gives you the benefit of both worlds.
5. Gender equality: Woman and men or boys and girls can train together in the martial arts. It seems that parents are ok with boys training but seem to push girls in other directions. Girls need the martial arts maybe more than boys. Fact is that they will probably need the self-defense skills in real world situation more than the boys will.
6. Weight control and physical fitness: Martial Arts can be a total body workout. There is strength training, cardio, stretching, upper and lower body techniques ranging from punches, kicks, takedowns, throws, submissions and more. It improves coordination, posture, agility, flexibility and more.
7. Families can do it together with their children: This may be the best reason. Imagine setting goals and reaching them as a family. Getting workouts together, “playing” martial arts together, earning Black Belts together are great things to keep a common bond for the entire family. My Sweetheart, son, daughter, son in law are all Black Belts and or professional fighters. Evan my grandchildren have started training. It is an awesome experience to share.
8. The never ending season or session: Depending where you live some sports are seasonal. I know when I played outdoor soccer in Buffalo NY we didn’t do it in a foot or more of snow. So there was a break between seasons. It is hard to master a skill if you do it for a few months than stop until next year or next season. You can practice Martial Arts indoors or outdoors and weather doesn’t matter.
9. Self-control / respect for strength: Self-control is developed with the discipline of the Martial Arts. You learn to pull a punch or drive through. You develop an understanding of strength and how to respect and manipulate it. The stronger person doesn’t always win. You also learn control so you can train with others without hurting them or getting hurt.
10. Athletic development: There are many styles of Martial Arts that will develop your athletic skills but some are better than others. A complete system would have self-defense, traditional techniques, punching, kicking, takedowns/throws, and control on the ground (grappling). There should be things you can practice by yourself and moves with a partner. The greater range of technique you perform the better understanding of physiology. This knowledge will translate to other sports.
11. It’s worldwide: Martial arts are practices all over the world. One style might be more common in one country than another but Martial arts is everywhere. Many countries have sports that are only played in that country and not available to everyone but all walks of life can practice in the Martial Arts.
12. Competition: train as a team and compete as an individual (teamwork and independence): As mention throughout this explanation of why Martial Arts are better for you and your children than team sports you can get the benefits of both worlds. If you choose to compete you need people to teach you, workout with you, practice with, spar, motivate and inspire you. Your instructors and your fellow classmates are there to make you perform at your best. When you compete though you may have the support of the team but you have to perform to win. No relying on someone else to make the play, it’s all up to you.
13. Exercise your mind as well as your body: This is where a program with an emphasis on personal development is great. Few if any team sports will have tenants, student creeds, blue print for success, curriculum to develop a student to be better at work or school, home, at the academy, and in the community. Many martial arts programs have all of this. Parents get your children involved in a good Martial Arts program and get involved with them. This doesn’t prevent them from playing other sports but it will enhance that sport if they do and it will bring you closer together.
14. Discipline: This comes in many forms. A martial art curriculum that combines the character education program develops both the physical technique but more importantly the mind. It is true that just going to class, practicing, pushing through tough workouts, and training on your own take discipline. The more you do this better you will get. If you translate that focus into personal development you can accomplish so much more in life. You also should learn the art is to make you a better person not misuse the martial arts. A learning techniques that can hurt someone you need to and a mental discipline a point it is appropriate. Even in the United States Marine Corps where the Marine is prepared for combat there is a Code of Honor, Courage, and Commitment that is expected to be followed.
Six reasons why it’s better at Martial Arts and More
1. There’s a structured organized curriculum and guideline to develop both physically and mentally: at the Academy, in school, at work, home and in the community
2. Students are taught and led by successful individuals both in the martial arts and in their personal lives.
3. The Black Belt Success System of goal setting and achieving.
4. A 17 year track record of developing champion martial artist in and outside of the Academy.
5. We exist to inspire and make a difference in our community one Black Belt at a time.
6. We offer a complete martial arts program.

PANKRATION
Pancrase is the most complete martial arts fighting system. It is the original Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). It incorporates all the striking of Muay Thai and Karate, all the takedowns of wrestling, all the submission of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and all the throws of Judo. It can be used as a self-defense system but is designed to fight not necessarily defend yourself from and attacker and get away. Our basic classes are designed for the student to learn the art. Anyone can train. There is not requirement to get in the cage and fight. That is an option for those that want to but not for the average student learning the art. Fight team and sparring practices are not part of the basic classes. You can earn rank as a self-defense practitioner or as a fighter.
History of PANCRASE
“The Father of Mixed Martial Arts”
The origin of UFC-type Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) dates back to the ancient Greek Olympic games. First introduced in 648 B.C. at the 33rd Olympiad, a form of free-style martial arts called Pancration (Pancrase) would soon become the most popular and demanding of all athletic sports. Olympic Pancration integrated every physical and mental resource; hands and feet, mind and spirit, in the closest simulation of competitive fighting that any culture has ever allowed. It was considered the ultimate Olympic sport for over a thousand years.
However, it was more than just a sport. Called by Philostratos the “Worthiest ontest in the Olympiads and the most important preparation for warriors”, Pancration was the martial training of the Greek and Spartan armies and was taken to India with the legions of Alexander the Great, where it became the accepted ancestor of the oriental martial arts.
Today, Pancrase MMA is experiencing a worldwide re-birth with an increasing number of martial artists and athletes being drawn to the ancient “King of Olympic Sports”. Pancrase MMA is the ultimate martial art of modern times.
Our family friendly school offers beginner through advanced instruction in the core mixed-martial arts. The curriculum is specifically designed for non-fighters and those interested in the other important areas of mixed martial arts; self-defense, fitness, confidence-building, personal-growth, and the sporting and recreational aspects. Personalized, small-group classes can accommodate most everyone. Providing safe, effective and fun instruction is our commitment to you.
Earn Belt Rank – Your progression as a mixed-martial artist will be rewarded by belt rank promotions. Pancrase MMA belt ranks and black belt degrees are among the most prestigious in the world.
Looking for fitness and conditioning training? Look no further. Our fitness system incorporates the same cutting-edge methods used by champion UFC fighters. Professional athletes from football, basketball, hockey and other major sports are now incorporating MMA fitness in their training programs.
Remember, our school is much more than just a place to learn martial arts or become physically fit. When you join, you become a member of a family that is the cornerstone of our organization. We welcome any and all skill and physical fitness levels. Contact Sensei Wright at wright.james56@yahoo.com to see how you can become an affiliate.
MORE ABOUT PANKRATION
The origins and exact age of this fighting form, however, are hard to determine.
Legend says that Hercules developed Pankration in order to become more formidable in wrestling tournaments. Another origin story by Plutarch is that Theseus created the Pankration in his battle with the Minotaur. While these are just myths, the fact that Pankration is connected to these revered heroes shows its importance to Ancient Greek culture. All the more evidenced by the fact that Pankration was one of the main events of the ancient Olympic games.
But what exactly is Pankration? And how was this martial art practiced?
To begin with, Pankration means “all power”. It was known in ancient times for its ferocity and allowance of such tactics as knees to the head and eye gouging.
One ancient account tells of a situation in which the judges were trying to determine the winner of a match. The difficulty lay in that fact that both men had died in the arena from their injuries, making it hard to determine a victor. Eventually, the judges decided the winner was the one who didn’t have his eyes gouged out. Over time, however, maneuvers like eye gouging were discouraged to prevent such unpleasant incidents.
While Pankration may seem from these stories to be little more than a brutal free for all, it did have its formal stances (Stasi), punches (Efthia), kicks (Laktismata), and blocks (Apokrousis).
The only rules that were enforced by referees, with beating sticks in hand, was no gouging (eventually) or biting. This meant that competitors could be very creative with their attacks and defense, resulting in a plethora of options. Indeed, describing every Pankration movement would require writing a complete book.
[Attic black-figure skyphos] In the end of the day though, the main goal in a match was to get your opponent to submit by raising an index finger in the air as a yield signal. The most common way to get this submission was a movement called a “choke”. This could be done with a front grip, where the trachea and windpipe are squeezed, or with a rear choke, where the caryatid arteries are closed by a forearm from behind.
Aside from chokes, an array of kicks, punches and blocks were used. Artist depictions on pottery show kicks to the stomach and shins. Punches had the best range of options from jabs to uppercuts and hooks. While blocking involved a key principle that is still taught by martial artists today, adapting to your opponent and looking for opportunities to counter their movements.
An example of this would be when your opponent is throwing a hook punch and your elbow point is used to absorb the impact of the knuckles. Then, while your opponent’s arm is extended, you punch the bicep and forearm crease with your free limb – effectively immobilizing your opponent’s remaining arm.
[Panathenaic prize amphora] This type of movement shows an interesting similarity to techniques found in Eastern martial arts, such as Kung Fu, Karate and Muay Thai.
But maybe this isn’t surprising at all… especially when you consider that Alexander the Great was a noted Pankration fighter. The famously ruthless Macedonian could have brought the martial art as far as his conquests in the Indus Valley, where cultural exchange could have allowed Pankration to spread to China and South East Asia.
While we we’ll never know for certain, perhaps in this way Pankration may very well be the mother of all martial art forms. The ancient Greeks left a tremendous legacy that is regularly represented by their art, literature and philosophy, but it is often overlooked that they did likewise in the field of fighting as well.

S.T.A.R. in the Martial Arts
Dear Students and Parents of students:
Martial Arts & More has introduced one of the most exciting and innovative programs you and your child will ever experience in the area of Personal Responsibility Education. The program is S.T.A.R. (Success Through Accepting Responsibility or Stop, Think, Act and Review). S.T.A.R. was developed by the Jefferson Center for Education, located in Pasadena, California. Over 5,000 schools and 50,000 classrooms currently use the S.T.A.R. curriculum across the country. This curriculum has reached nearly 2 million students. The Jefferson Center for Character Education is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization founded in 1963, which addresses the need to teach character education in both public and private schools. The Jefferson Center focuses on the systematic teaching of common values that cut across ethnic, cultural, and religious lines. These values include: honesty, respect, responsibility, integrity, courage, tolerance, justice, self-confidence, and politeness.
Our mission is to instill these very values in students using the martial arts. This is an ongoing process. It’s not something achieved in a month, or year, but rather over a lifetime of education and effort. We have chosen the S.T.A.R. program because it is the perfect complement to our philosophy. S.T.A.R. will provide an ongoing, systematic method of teaching the core values on which our program is based.
S.T.A.R. is designed to teach students to:
• Accept the consequences of their actions.
• Use the S.T.A.R. Stop Think Act Review decision-making model to solve problems and resolve conflicts.
• Develop and improve self-confidence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes.
• Set and achieve realistic goals.
• Accept that attendance in class, punctuality, and reliability, are part of being personally responsible.
Results of Independent Studies:
Studies done by two Pittsburgh, PA foundations, the Scafe Family foundation and the Vera I. Heinz foundation, showed dramatic decreases in disciplinary problems during an average month after the introduction of S.T.A.R. in an academic setting. For example, fighting decreased 25%, tardiness 40%. Theme of the Month: All monthly themes will emphasize responsibility and values. For example, “How Can I
Make Good Choices?” could be a theme of the month. Monthly Activity: Each Theme of the Month will have an activity, which the student is encouraged to do. The activity will reinforce the value expressed by the monthly theme. For example, the theme above would require
students to keep a logbook of kind and courteous acts done during the month.
S.T.A.R. Award: Our school is ads S.T.A.R. patch of achievement, which will go to every student who does the following:
1) Completes the monthly activity.
2) Works up to his or her ability in school and behaves there.
3) Behaves at home.
4) Displays leadership qualities and a sincere effort to improve while attending classes in the dojo.
5) Returns the S.T.A.R. Home/School Approval Form no later than the third week of the month. No late forms will be accepted or lost ones replaced. Remember, we are teaching the child responsibility.
Other Reward Systems: The patches currently earned, Student of the Month award, SWAT, STORM, and other awards will be incorporated into the S.T.A.R system.
As S.T.A.R. grows here at the school, there will be other enhancements to our curriculum. As always, your input is essential to our success. After all, the most important people in the character education of a child are mom and dad.
Once again, thank you for your support in helping make our school the best Martial Arts Center in the county.

Women Warriors!
Women Only class is the official self-defense program for women based on the techniques of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). In this 10-lesson program, we will teach you how to neutralize the 15 most common attacks ranging from having your hair grabbed to being pinned to the ground by a weapon-bearing assailant. Each one-hour lesson addresses two techniques. You can start the program at any time and participate in any class without previous experience. Unlike most self-defense systems that rely heavily on strength, speed, and coordination, the techniques in the program employ leverage, technique, and timing, so anyone, regardless of age or athletic ability, can make them work against larger opponents. Once you complete the program, you may test for promotion to pink belt!
Brazilian Jiu-jitsu is the perfect self-defense system for women, but only if it is taught correctly. If you’re unsure about learning BJJ for fear of injury, embarrassment, or any other reason, then the Women program is perfect for you! If you’ve tried BJJ at another school and had a negative experience, give Women only class a chance, and we guarantee it will win you back to the mat!
15 Essential Techniques
Law enforcement officials and survivors of sexual assault helped us identify the 15 most common attack strategies that a male assailant is likely to use on a woman. From hair-grabs and choke-holds, to bear hugs and weapon defenses, the program covers it all.
Step 1: Learn the Techniques
We have divided the 15 techniques into 10 one-hour classes so that you can complete the course at your own pace. We designed each lesson so that you can start at any point in the course. As a result, you can start the program at any time and complete the 10 lessons in any order. Upon enrolling, we will issue you a attendance card on which we will track your progress every step of the way.
Step 2: Develop Your Reflexes
Once you complete each of the 10 lessons once, you will qualify to participate in the muscle memory classes where you will learn how to combine the 15 techniques to address the most common occurrences in a real self-defense situation.
Step 3: Earn Your Pink Belt
Once you complete each of the lessons four times, and you’ve completed at least four Reflex Development Classes, you are eligible to test for promotion to pink belt! During this 15-minute test, we will assess your execution of all 15 essential techniques. If your performance meets Gracie University standards, you will qualify for promotion to pink belt. As a pink belt, you will be more than ready to move on to the Combatives program should you choose to continue the jiu-jitsu journey!
What is the Pink Belt?
As with every program at Martial Arts and more awarding belts is the traditional way to acknowledge progress and accomplishment. With the development of the program, the course featured so many unique strategies, objectives, techniques, and psychology tailored to a special set of circumstances, that the standard Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu belt system did not apply. So, we decided to add an entirely new belt, and since pink was one of the only colors not used in the existing BJJ belt system, we introduced the Women’s Pink Belt! It not only symbolizes dedication to the techniques of the program, but also an understanding of the philosophy that is essential for survival in life-threatening scenarios. We hope that this reflexive understanding of both the philosophy and techniques will instill a confidence in women that reduces their risk of ever becoming a target in the first place. Since the program was created we have watched women dedicate countless hours to earning their pink belt, and with every pink belt earned, the value and prestige of this belt has become undeniable.
