Child Appeal Character

Child appeal character

I love the Speed Racer movie. I really hope we get another one. It's beautiful, bright colors, plenty of movement, and a lot of awesome visuals. I nearly fell out of my seat at the end when they clearly recreate the opening during the finale.

It got me thinking, though. One of the Channel Awesome (Y, Ruler of Time specifically, and everyone on there is awesome and you should stop reading this to check them out) reviewers pointed out the movie Spritle can be a bit...off-putting.

A second viewing and I noted...yeah, a lot of Spritle's scenes can be a bit unnecessary.

And then that got me thinking.

I don't remember where, but it was probably a Cracked.com article on such matters, pointed out that one of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace's failings was young Anakin Skywalker. The article said "Kids want to fantasize with adult Hon Solo, not identify with young Anakin."

Fair enough. I've been told Johnny Quest is a kid's fantasy, and I really can't pinpoint where it succeeded and Star Wars and Speed Racer failed.

I can say this: Speed Racer doesn't need another character to appeal to kids.

That's Speed's job.

He's a clean-cut, all-American (there's some irony for you) good boy, whose movie centers around the triumph of ethics and morality over greed and corruption. Mothers would love for this guy to be their kid's role model (if Movie!Speed got better grades in school, at least).

And he has got the COOLEST job that any little boy and some grown men I know would love to have. He drives a tricked-out car that does midair flips on the craziest race tracks, and comes out without a scratch.

Even I'd watch racing if it looked like what I saw in the movie.
