Robert Partridge's Blog, page 2

October

Very autumnal outside the window this morning, with a robin's mournful winter song drifting across the gardens...

Someone went through all the blog posts in the last couple of days - well, two people actually unless one person went through them twice. I remain mildly curious about the whole process of blogging and the reader's relationship with it. As for sales, well, virtually non-existent. It does appear that e-books have a shelf life, and that as they age they are even less likely to be found by readers. I suppose that's why the people determined to make a business out of it tend to write serials or series, so that each new one directs attention to previous books.

Anyway, I've temporarily given up the general fiction; a detective novel under a new name should hit the screens in a few days' time.

up to nine

Here's an update on the latest blog viewing figures. The last post had 5 views in an hour, followed by 4 more a day later. I have no idea who these people are - it's definitely not me clicking on 9 times to view my own post.

Sales are very slow; well, in the sense that most authors on the forums seem to consider them, but I am always pleasantly surprised when even a single copy goes out, as one of 'The Rink' did overnight. One is always left wondering who that was and hoping that they will find something to enjoy in it. Very few readers seem inclined to leave reviews but as the review process itself on Amazon is under suspicion anyway, does that really matter. The best hope is that someone occasionally uses 'Look Inside' and likes what they see.

Currently reading a couple of Agatha Christie Poirots, partly out of curiosity and partly to help contextualise my own amateurish detective fiction efforts. They (Agatha's!) aren't sophisticated at all but something keeps you reading, and that's the magic, I suppose.

Who are the five?

The mystery deepens a little...after the last post, five people read it straight away. Obviously nobody commented but who are you? Are you also reading this post? If this keeps up, I'm sure that I could turn it into a story.

The question of whether literary fiction (whatever it is) has any sort of place in independently published writing is regularly debated in various forums. No-one comes to any conclusions but it is a topic that divides opinions and which gets some people over-excited. Fascinating.

But still..

But still the odd person comes along, reads the blog and moves on, like the finger writing in the sands of time. This is for them...

Still writing. As I've said before, it becomes a habit and you feel somehow deprived and guilty at the same time if you haven't produced some new words every day. Currently it's a detective novel - old-fashioned and traditional in approach but I've read several lately and to me far too many are needlessly violent and graphic nowadays. So even swearing is rather mild in my fictional detective's world. It's enjoyable to write after recent rather serious efforts.

Reading - coming to the end of volume 4 of 'In Search of Lost Time'. In such a huge book, there are flatter sections but Proust is right back on form as he explores the ageing of Baron de Charlus, an unforgettable character.

Feel free to say hello.

OK I gave up

Yes, I gave up blogging, not really knowing whether anyone ever actually read them. But then, not everything works for everyone.

Novel number three, 'Asher' should appear on Amazon any time now. It's rather serious, I feel, but sometimes things are determined to be written, try as one might to avoid them.

Next, well, I've always fancied a detective novel. The first three chapters are already written...

Or even...

So for example you could say - 'I was able to make a comment even though I have nothing to say.' Somebody had a look at all the blog posts yesterday - I will spend the day wondering who that was...

It's February, then, and the long, cold, wet winter isn't over yet but there are snowdrops in the garden - I can see them from here. 'Afon' outsold 'The Rink' last month which was a surprise to me but we're still only talking single figures here!

The shortest day...blink and you'll miss it as it's so gloomy and wet. 'The Rink' is selling a few copies - thanks if you bought one. A few people also read these blogs, apparently, but no-one has ever yet commented. Obviously there might be nothing to say, which is fine, but I'd like to know that people can comment if they wish. So, if you are reading this, can you make a comment such as 'I was able to make a comment'!

Merry Christmas and all that...

I'm slightly curious as to who the people are who 'view' blogs. I suppose that if you are reading this, you've just become one of them. Nobody has left a comment yet - I'm assuming that I would be able to see any comments left after a 'view'.

It's a grim day here in the fens, cold, windy with showers every few minutes - not exactly inspiring when you are trying to conjure up May in a medieval cathedral! Could always go and read some more of 'The Guermantes Way' but parts of it are so wonderful that, as a would-be writer, you end up feeling rather hopeless for a while afterwards. Life is complicated, isn't it?

So...

Not a lot has happened since the last (and first) blog on this site. It's probably my own fault as I don't really understand how most things on here work. But the second novel 'The Rink' went live on Amazon.co.uk yesterday and someone has already taken a chance on it. Just in case they are a Goodreads member, I thought I'd better post something here.

Must do better.

What is a blog?

I'm really not sure, might have to look it up. This is mainly an experiment to see what appears where when I hit 'Publish' but if anyone does see it and wants to reply - if they can- please do so. 'Afon' has gone quiet now, as I suppose most independently published things do but it was downloaded about 170 times, and some people even paid!More comments on it are still most welcome.
