BesideYourHeart_Cover_RGB

Title: Beside Your Heart

Author:  Mary Whitney

Genre: New Adult Romance

Publish Date: June 17, 2013

Synopsis:

Late one night Nicki Johnson plays with emotional fire and Googles her high school love, only to find his name splashed across the British gossip columns. Back in his native England, Adam Kincaid is successful and dating a woman from an aristocratic family like his own. With a career in politics, Nicki’s no slouch, but she knows Adam is living a world away from her life. Yet there was a time he was no farther than the next locker. Nicki will never forget their year together in high school—the year of her sister’s death, the year her mother checked out. Adam helped Nicki through suffocating grief, and she led him through a coming of age. Was it just high school, or was it something more?

Beside Your Heart Excerpt:

“No British literature. Isn’t this supposed to be an English class?” Adam asked.

“Uh.” My ancestors would’ve been proud of the jolt of American patriotism that hit me.  “There was a revolution two hundred years ago. We write our own books now.”

He leaned back in his seat with a smile. “I think I heard about that.”

“We still share the same language.”

“Sometimes I’m not too sure.”

“I bet not.” I could imagine what he thought of a Texas accent.

He picked up the list of books again. “What about Catcher in the Rye?”

“I read it a long time ago when I was, like, eleven.” I laughed a little as I remembered how I’d first come to read it.

“Is there something funny about that?”

“Yeah. My father had suggested I read it then. The book is the classic coming-of-age story. Clearly, he wasn’t really thinking about whether or not it was appropriate for an eleven-year-old.”

“Really? Why?”

“Well, for one thing, the main character is a guy who swears a lot.”

“I suppose I swear a lot.” He cracked a sly smile. “At least compared to you Yankees.”

“Yankees? You’re in the South.” I laughed.

“What else is inappropriate about the book? Now I’m interested. It can’t only be a few swear words.”

“No, it’s not just that. It’s…” I hesitated for a moment as I realized I was about to bring up the topic of sex with Adam Kincaid. What the hell, I thought. I should be matter-of-fact about it. He had a girlfriend and would never want anything with me. I could hide I thought he was hot, so I shrugged. “Holden, the main character…he’s a little sexually frustrated.”

His eyes twinkled, and it felt as if my words hung in the air. I wanted to squirm in my seat. ‘Sexually frustrated’—like me checking out Adam Kincaid.

His proper upbringing showed again as he sidestepped the issue, yet he smirked. “That sounds like an adventurous book to be on an American high school syllabus.”

“Like I said—it’s considered an American classic.” I laughed. “I guess some things are sacred.”

“But of course.” The gleam appeared in his eye again, and he turned toward me in his seat. “Teenage sexual frustration is sort of a rite of passage, if you will.”

There went the good-English-boy manners out the window. His tone, the look in his eye, his body language—was he flirting with or taunting me? I decided the former was impossible, and if the latter, I wasn’t going to back down. With two parents who were lawyers, debate was a family routine.

“A rite of passage? More like a biological fact, isn’t it?” I asked, casually clicking my pen. I raised a brow. “Especially for guys.”

“You’re right about that,” he said with a grin.

His eyes shifted downward, and I could feel him give me a once-over. I wondered what he thought. I was no Meredith, but I had enough self-confidence to know I wasn’t butt-ugly either—even with my scars. I couldn’t tell, but he’d distracted me so much, I jumped when I heard Mrs. Anderson ask, “Your name, dear?”

4 Reasons Why, Actually, You Cannot Touch My Hair

Reblogged from Disrupting Dinner Parties:

Click to visit the original post Click to visit the original post Click to visit the original post Click to visit the original post Click to visit the original post

Last week an art exhibit opened in NYC called “You Can Touch My Hair.” It featured three black women, all with different hair styles, standing in Union Station with signs featuring those same words. It was not intended to be the start of a hair touching movement, but a social experiment to explore the widespread tactile fascination with black women's hair.

Her reasons were well thought out, methodical and hilariously funny, with an undercurrent of feminist seriousness to it. I don't want anybody touching my hair either. That's like asking if you can cut me and see if I bleed red! My hair texture is not your goddamn anomaly! Okay, rant over. :)

IR/MC Juneteenth Sale!

Junteenth Sale_graphic_final2It’s June and you know what that means? It’s hotter than hades outside. It  also means Juneteenth is right around a corner. And THAT means it’s almost time for the Juneteenth sale I’m participating in.

Why Juneteenth?

The simple fact is there was a time in America’s history where folks would get fined, punished or thrown in jail for teaching people of color to read. More specifically, teaching slaves to read. The general fear was if you taught slaves how to write they might, you know, think about their lot in life. They may not be happy about it. They just might educate themselves. And then the nightmare would begin: they might educate others.

What I do every day as a passion-for a living-was illegal in the United States. Took some time for the word to get out that slavery had been abolished and that was just one step closer to where I’m sitting now. I don’t know about you, but I think that’s cause for a celebration. It’s worthy of taking a moment.

Why a group sale?

On "Geek" Versus "Nerd"

Reblogged from Slackpropagation:

Click to visit the original post Click to visit the original post

To many people, "geek" and "nerd" are synonyms, but in fact they are a little different. Consider the phrase "sports geek" — an occasional substitute for "jock" and perhaps the arch-rival of a "nerd" in high-school folklore. If "geek" and "nerd" are synonyms, then "sports geek" might be an oxymoron. (Furthermore, "sports nerd" either doesn't compute or means something else.)

Read more… 1,129 more words

I've always known there was a difference, but like most folks I've used the word interchangeably. But no more!

Sunday Sneak Peek ~ Author N. K. Smith’s Hollywood Lies

Author to Author presents a special sneak Peek for N.K. Smith’s erotic novel: Hollywood Lies.

Don’t worry! The peek is perfectly safe for work.

Her

hair is the exact color of a flaming sunset, her eyes the palest green I’ve

ever seen, and her body is like that of a woman captured in marble by the

master artists of old. Her beauty has never been a secret, but I didn’t expect

a goddess to be standing in front of me. It seems unfair to the rest of the

female population that she has more than her fair share of beauty.
“Wow.”

The whispered word is out of my mouth before I can stop it. My face heats up in

embarrassment, but I swallow hard against the stupidity that comes naturally.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you,” I say when I remember myself.
Collette

turns the edges of her lips up and pretends not to have heard the awe in my

voice. “I keep all these here in my office just in case musical inspiration

strikes while I’m working on other projects. Are you sure you won’t play?” she

asks.
“Oh.

Oh, no, thank you. Maybe another time.”
“When

you’re not so nervous?” It’s the first time Liliana speaks.
Although

not as captivating as Collette, the younger woman is also pretty. Liliana is

gorgeous in that mysterious and edgy girl

next door
kind of way. Her long, blond hair makes me want to run my fingers

through it, and I want to know what goes on behind her deep, penetrating blue

eyes. Reviewers call her, “The starlet with a million expressions,” and I

wonder what this expression means.
“Hello,”

I say in an unintentional seductive tone.
“Hi,”

Liliana returns with a smile.
Liliana,

like Collette, had been a child actor. Now nineteen, she was eight when she got

her first role in an quirky, independent film about soldiers returning from war

and has accomplished so much since then. Being only four years older than her,

I’ve used her success as a way to challenge myself and I’ve followed her career

as inspiration. Under the scrutiny of the camera and the American public, she

grew up a bit awkwardly, although there are no signs of it as I stand next to

her.
But

now isn’t the time to contemplate Liliana Addison. It’s time to impress, so I

decide to be honest. “Yeah, I’m nervous. Terrified, actually. Both of you are

kind of heroes of mine.”
My

words did what I intend them to do. Both Liliana and Collette look at me with

curiosity, obviously wanting me to expand.
“The

movies you guys make are just . . . well, I mean, Edge of Night and Six Ways? Those are daring and intelligent films.”
Collette

laughs quietly. “You have read this script, right?”
“Of

course, I have,” I say with a bit of confusion.
“Then

you know we don’t always make daring

and intelligent films.”
