Vox’s Joss Fong put together a beautiful video pairing the images from the Voyager Golden Records (learn more about them here) with words from Carl Sagan and music from Blind Willie Johnson. The first image was a simple “calibrating circle” used in this post’s title.
There’s something powerful about this collection of images – this small attempt to sum up human existence. Carl Sagan said:
The spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this ‘bottle’ into the cosmic ‘ocean’ says something very hopeful about life on this planet.
If we sent a time capsule to the aliens today, what would you want to include?
Think I’d want to throw in scenes from Aliens, Jurassic World and Godzilla movies. Not make Earth look too inviting…

“The entire x86 computer architecture is living on borrowed time. It’s a dead platform walking. The future belongs to ARM, and Apple’s A-series SoC’s are leading the way.”
- John Gruber, in his review of the iPad Pro. (via parislemon)
Some of us have been saying this since the nineties… Long before Apple had even heard of ARM. Still not quite true yet though.

A Death in the Family…
I’m afraid my writing has sort of been thrown into hiatus by a quite sudden death in the family. My wife’s sole remaining Grandparent, Mary Parry, passed early on Thursday morning and it has hit the whole family a bit hard. She had a fall a few weeks ago and, it turned out, the fall was a sign of a degenerative motor neurone disease that came on very rapidly. We have been visiting her in hospital…

Problem with T13 pages
Something has changed in the background of my site and it seems to have broken the T13 rules pages…
Not sure what’s happened, it may be a fault caused by an automatic update that has somehow disabled my custom post-types, I will have to investigate…
Until then, sorry folks there’s not a lot I can do about it while stuck in the wilds of Shropshire without a laptop as the wordpress apps don’t…

Yog-Sothoth arises from the angles of time and space. What new thought did it inspire? There’s a code here.
