The Narrownose chimaera (Harriotta raleighana), occurs in deep waters of the continental slopes in depths of 380 to 2,600 m in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They are oviparous but nothing is known of spawning and reproduction and very few juveniles have been collected. It was filmed swimming 10 m above the seafloor in Hydrographer Canyon, off the coast of Nantucket Island in the US.

Is it me or is it pretending to be a squid? What the hell is going on down there that looking like a squid is a useful adaptation? I mean aren’t squid cannibalistic?

Imagine a new Star Trek series that…
Imagine a new Star Trek series that continues where the shows and movie canon of TNG, Voyager, and DS9 left off. That is set shortly after all those events and can therefore still utilize all those characters. Of course it would most likely introduce a new cast of characters as perhaps the primary group (although I don’t believe it would need it) but it would also allow the other characters we have come to know and love the chance to either cameo or come on for entire seasonal story arch’s. Additionally this could not only tie into the existing novel canon, but could also even serve as the precursor to the events of Star Trek Online.
I respectfully submit Star Trek: Federation
A new Star Trek show that follows up with all of our favorite Star Trek characters and combines 3 of the Star Trek shows interacting with each other?

That would be nice, but I can’t see it happening now that the movies have rebooted into a more action based universe.
Then again I’d love to see a Next Gen/DS9/Voyager episode set down the new timeline and Federation would fit the bill.

“Ah don’ wanna talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food-trough wiper! Ah fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster, and your father smelt of elderberries! …Now go away, or I shall taunt you a second time!”
One of our favorite scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail involves French soldiers verbally taunting brave King Arthur and his questing knights and then launching a live cow at them over the castle wall. It’s not a catapult, it’s a cowtapult:
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of this awesome film a very special boxed set is coming out next month that’s shaped like a miniature castle and include a working cow catapult with a teeny-tiny cow and other mini livestock. The set also includes an educational film entitled “How to Use Your Coconuts", outtakes and extended scenes with an introduction by Terry Jones, Lost animations with an introduction by Terry Gilliam, Commentaries by Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, John Cleese, Eric Idle, and Michael Palin, and more!
The Monty Python and the Holy Grail 40th anniversary boxed set comes out on October 27, 2015. Click here to pre-order.

Anyone want to know what to get me for Christmas… This would do the job nicely and by then I’ll have forgotten all about it…

If you couldn’t tell already, NASA…
If you couldn’t tell already, NASA is having a great year. From Pluto to food grown in space, even in the face of budget cuts, the nation’s space agency had some stellar highlights. Most mysteriously of all, a spacecraft found two eerily bright lights on a distant dwarf planet.
The last one looked like wolves howling at the moon
They do seem to be having a lot of luck, nothing has been accidentally metric-imperial, or blown up in ages, must be time for a budget cut.

Science in Science-Fiction: Exoskeletons
I thought it was about time to start up my Science in Science-Fiction posts again (they still get more visitors than my world-building posts — even if they don’t get many comments these days).
So how to bring the series back? Well I gave it some thought and decided that one of the most interesting things happening these days are Exoskeletons.
What are Exoskeletons?
Literally translated the word…
