Halloween Memory Lane

HippieI’m married to a Halloween fanatic. It’s his absolute favorite holiday, and he likes to have fun on this day.

For years we had a Halloween costume party. This started in the 1990s as a last minute decision one year and grew into this elaborate affair that people talked about the second they folded September away. One year we had a superhero theme and another it was television characters. People stuck to the theme and got very creative, like whenGeneric Man showed up in all his white-with-a-bla...

“Inside a Boy’s Head”

I had a conversation with my daughter yesterday about writing. Poppy wanted me to read a short story she had written in her Language Arts class, and she was upset with the editing a male classmate had done on her draft. I completely got that! I’m working through edits on my own manuscript right now, so I could easily feel her pain. For the record, I agreed with nearly everything the boy had corrected on her draft aside from a few commas.

After I got done reading and had give her my feedback, P...

Jay Northcote Talks First Times, but it’s Nothing Serious

I’m so happy to welcome one of my reading partners and friends, Jay Northcote, to my blog today. Her bookNothing Serious was released a few days ago, and I was one of the lucky early readers. But let me step aside now, because Jay is talking about first times. Oh, the scandal!

My Favourite First Times

Nothing Serious is a story full of first times and new experiences. At twenty-nine, Mark has only recently admitted to himself that he’s gay. We meet him at the point when he’s moving out of the h...

Use a Spark to Light that Oven

SparkImay have turned into a little bit of a dork when I wrote Spark. You see, I decided to share some of my Midwestern culture with people in the back of the book by including recipes. I’m not a lover of cooking, by any stretch of the imagination, but there are a few things I can do quite well. I included two of those recipes in Spark: Lemon Bars and Tator Tot Hotdish.

And yes, hotdish is one word where I live.

To me, a hot dish, is a dish or a plate that is warm to the touch.

A hotdish is a full me...

It’s Apparent Now

You know you no longer care about losing weight when you smear peanut butter on your oatmeal chocolate chip cookie without a second thought. After you’ve finished it, loving all those flavors mixed together, you get another one.

Last January I was told to quit going to the gym because of my injured foot and shoulder. I’ve probably rejoiced complained about it here before, but I took the advice to heart. Luckily, I haven’t gained any weight because I’m pretty much at one of my set points (which...

Annabelle Jacobs is Here! Let’s Talk Fantasy

I’m so pleased to have Annabelle Jacobs here today to talk about her new release, The Choosing. I’ve been hearing about it behind the scenes for months, and I’m so excited to read it. The cover is gorgeous.

Why Fantasy?

I recently told a friend of mine that I’d written a book and it was being published, and she naturally asked me what it was about. When I told her it was a m/m romantic fantasy, she didn’t ask me why I’d chosen to write m/m, like I was expecting, she asked me why I’d chosen to w...

I just have so much love for this kid...

He's brave and he doesn't even know it. He eschews boxes with his painted nails and love of superheroes. He defines himself and his loves and only slightly understands that he's doing something revolutionary. Because this is just who he is: An almost 7-year-old boy whose favorite colors are pink and purple, who has long, curly blonde hair that whips in the wind as he makes soccer goals, who paints his nails every color of t...
