Doctor Who Series Premiere
So, my trepidation over another episode of Doctor Who finally ended last night with my watching the DVR'ed episode.
It was alright.
There were parts of it I really, really liked.
The whole thing with the meet-up with the Doctor felt super, super awkward. But I sorta' think that it was supposed to.
I didn't like what they did with Bors. After the prequel episode, I was hoping for a King Arthur storyline somewhere (Sir Bors is one of the Grail Knights and the knight that returned Caliburn/Excalibur to the Lady of the Lake; I don't think it's strange to hope for the Bors when you have a knight named Bors in a show like Doctor Who). Maybe it still will end up as that Bors is the Bors, but it seems unlikely with how they ended his parts.
And Doctor Who REALLY needs to get away from the news clips when there is a world crisis. Sheesh, how many episodes have they done the exact same thing? It's beyond old. I didn't like it the first time they did it, let alone what ever umpteenth time this is.
All in all, I was OK with everything, but it really should have been a 2 hour premiere. I'll be surprised if the things that happened keep at all, so it just felt very cheap.
Maybe Marvel has inured me to the "he's dead! but obviously not dead" trope. There's a way to do it properly that feels natural. The way it's being done nowadays in movies and shows just feels lazy and akin to a jump scare. And maintaining that over the course of a multi-episode arc is even worse.
The way they did it with Jack back in Series 1 of Doctor Who was an example of how to bring back a character correctly. This just feels lazy.
My opinion about the showrunner really hasn't changed. I always thought his stories were some of the best, and that first series he was in charge of I enjoyed immensely, but since then the quality has dropped off sharply.
Maybe Doctor Who is a victim of its own success?
Anyway, have you seen it? What do you think?
Warning: comments may contain spoilers.

When a student gives up [rant]
I'm in the (un?)fortunate position of teaching a terminal level technical calculus course. I find the material very interesting, and it's nice that this course incorporates features from Calc 2, Calc 3, Differential Equations and Linear Algebra (because I don't usually get to teach Differential Equations or Linear Algebra), but it's bad in the sense that I'm not teaching the first technical calculus course and up until this semester, I wasn't teaching any precalculus courses.
Which means that my students are in no way prepared for the course they are taking.
Ignoring the fact that students that have passed Calc 1 should know how to do limits and take derivatives, I can already tell that my students are struggling to tread water in the course.
Over the last week, we've been working on methods of integration, which is quite a bulky portion of the text and would possibly be the majority of a non-technical calc 2 course, but the thing that has apparently started drowning a significant number of students is algebra.
Specifically, being able to rewrite powers of cosine and sine using the Pythagorean Identity and the double-angle (or half-angle) identities.
Algebra.
I know, and I've always taught, that the hard part of calculus isn't calculus, it's everything that we assume you know how to do before calculus that you now realllllllly need to be able to do without thinking about it.
But when confronted with an algebraic problem, even if you're rusty or lacking, why would you let algebra be the thing that makes you give up on a course?
This is the type of thing that is easily rectifiable! It's not like it's some obscure portion of mathematics, it's expanding binomials, but those binomials have cosines and sines in them instead of x's and y's.
It's been a very rough week for my teacher's heart.
When a student completely gives up, shuts down, and refuses to attempt to learn, I may find that the most frustrating of every frustration in this job. I can help if you let me.
If you clamp up and give up on the material though, there's not much I can do to break through that shell in the time we have available to us.
In high school, a single course normally takes something along the lines of 36 weeks, meeting 5 hours a week. That's 180 hours of instruction, with regular reinforcement and steady homework and homework checking. In college, we are lucky to get 15 weeks of 5 hours a week, and non-attendance, non-participation, and completely avoiding the material are significant obstacles. That's less than half of the time. It really hamstrings you in what you are able to do with students. It doesn't force a lecture-based course, but you definitely have your work cut out for you if you want to be more dynamic. It's one of the reasons why many people consider college material to be a teach-yourself sort of thing with professors guiding you and showing you new things, but relying on you to force yourself to master the material.
And yet, there's this idea amongst college students (particularly freshman), that they don't have to work hard outside of class. What the fuck is that?
I shouldn't need a ramrod to shove the material down your throats. If there is a lack in your education, let's address it. I will help you, but I won't force you.
Yet, here I am considering what remediations I am able to provide. Considering working more hours for the same amount of money to try to get students to understand material they don't care about and that they refuse to acknowledge they need.
I wonder how much longer I will be able to continue to get up in front of classrooms full of students. I've already been spoiled by finding out what it's like to help teachers instead of students (although they have their own sets of obstinacies that are sometimes mind-numbingly frustrating).
I'd like to idealize math majors since I don't normally get to teach them, thinking that maybe that would be a different case, but from my own experience as an undergraduate and even graduate student, I know there are possibly a majority of students that still don't care about the material or have a natural curiosity for the field they chose for themselves.

Doctor Who Review delayed until Sunday
The title says it all, I know there is a new episode this week and I am super-stoked for it, but I won't be able to watch it on time, so I will be off the internet until I do and the review will be a day late.
Thank you for reading,

Successful writing
The way I see things now, I can start to strongly supplement my lifestyle with my writings.
My writing had already led to me getting the greatest job I've ever had, and even though it's ended, I feel that there is more I should take away from the incredible opportunity I earned. I currently am earning royalties on two books that I myself authored, have published and are available for sale. People all over the world buy my books. But all of those people combined aren't going to keep buying the same books over and over again just to give me a couple dollars a month. I need to continue to produce material for the people that do call me one of their favorite authors or for the people that my writing has positively affected.
Being able to buy pizza from my royalties or paying a bill or two is no longer something that I am happy about. To jumpstart my life, I've estimated that my goal should be to write the equivalent of 6 novels a year.
This is all writing mind you, including the writing you're reading at this very second, along with rewrites and edits and everything else. Everything helps after all, and if I'm not producing purchasable material, I am at least writing and practicing my craft.
6 fantasy novels would be about 600,000 words on average (although novels in general tend to clock in around 50K, fantasy is regularly 100K+), so 600,000 words a year.
50K a month, which is NaNo's goal also.
For someone writing as their job, this should be nothing. 50K a month is about 1700 a day, which is no more than 210 words an hour.
Now, I know there is writer's block and research and everything else. But I think that's more than reasonable as long as you allow some days will be writing more and some days will be writing less.
For instance, if you subtract weekends right off the bat, then that leaves about 260 days in the year. That bumps us up to 2310 words a day and 290 words an hour.
And if we assume we can only dedicate 20 hours a week instead of 40? Then that's 580 words an hour, which is all of a sudden manageable in short bursts, but probably not consistently if you count research, marketing, editing, page design and all the rest that goes into writing that is not itself the act of putting words to paper.
But I've just written about 500 words in twenty minutes, so then maybe that's not too much to ask?
I've come out of a long tunnel and I am starting to see again. It may be that I will fail, but I won't fail from not trying. I will keep on.
Thank you for your support,

Why does "Holy Knight" suck so bad?
Hi guys,
I've been playing around with restructuring this blog, and trying to refine it so that it's something that I would like to go to as much as I actually want to write for it. This is why I've been doing the WotA Weekly's and did a huge push of posts in February. WotA Weekly is going to be once a week (on Fridays), and I'm also going to do some sort of math post once a week, and for the last thing . . .
Well, the number one thing the internet seems to regularly fail at when I go to look for information is reviews and recommendations on anime. It's hard to find a source that you actually trust. So I figure, I can be a source that is at least consistent. So here's my first look at "Holy Knight", the dub is available on Crunchyroll if you want to check it out (although . . . well, you probably shouldn't support this kind of content)
Oh crap, what a terrible, terrible mistake.
What's Holy Knight? It's a disaster, but a thankfully short disaster.
There are two episodes up on Crunchyroll, and from everything I can find these are the ONLY episodes.
I'm not against dubs; I completely agree that Japanese voice actors are usually *much* better than American, but the American dubs aren't always bad. This is a bad dub.
Even if this wasn't a dub, Holy Knight would be stupid. The story starts out with some promise, but quickly becomes absurd. The characters are stupid with stupid motivations if you even think of any motivations. The fan service is rapey.
The main character is a strigoi (which kudos for picking a monster that most people aren't aware of), but then goes on to say that it's just a vampire, and needs to copulate with the last heir of a vampire hunter family, then kill the heir and the child to bathe in their blood.
Why is never really explained. She appears to already be a strigoi, so it's not like she needs to awaken her powers or anything.
It's just really, really stupid.
She has no personality and is stereotypically the "cold" anime character but for no freaking reason. At least most tsundere characters are sympathetic or empathetic, she's just an idiot.
I can't recommend that you stay away from Holy Knight enough. Besides the somewhat OK art, it's unoriginal without any reward to watching whatsoever, and with terrible English acting. Also, there's no real ending. It feels like episode 2 of an entire series, not the last episode of an OVA.
And this is coming from someone that is admittedly biased towards demons, vampires, knights and the lot. I eat that crap up and ask for more. My bias is the only reason I was even able to continue watching the show.
Anyway, have you seen Holy Knight? If so, what did you think? Are there any anime you want me to check out and review? I have access to Netflix and Crunchyroll for possible anime. The way this will work is I'm going to prioritize anime that are airing right now or just came out, and every once in a while will go back and do older shows.
Thanks for reading. Remember to comment, +1, and subscribe.

What happened this weekend???
Hey everyone,
I didn't get a chance to be on my computer this weekend so I am only now seeing that Friday's Weekly WotA not only didn't post on time, apparently Blogger lost the draft. Not sure what happened there, but I've been having internet connectivity issues so I'm going with that explanation instead of something wrong with the hallowed Google.
I'll be posting at least one WotA blog tomorrow and possibly two, along with the regularly scheduled Friday blog on Friday.
Sorry for the inconvenience! and know that you can email me if something doesn't seem right on any of the sites. A lot of times I am focusing on writing new material or grading/day-jobbing more than updating the sites, so sometimes mistakes happen.
Thank you for your support!
So how was your weekend? I spent it running between family matters and grading an absurd amount of calculus papers. Comment below

News: Jon Stewart leaving the Daily Show
I guess with all the good news in my fandoms some bad news had to happen also . . .
That's a punch to the gut after so many years of brilliance, but good luck to Mr. Stewart with whatever he chooses to do next.
So what are your thoughts on Jon Stewart retiring from the Daily Show? Comment below. Thanks for reading.

Site Recommendation: RiptApparel.com
If you guys haven't heard of RiptApparel.com yet, here's my recommendation.
Each day RiptApparel.com provides 3 designs available as t-shirts, hoodies, posters, and . . . coasters(?) for some reason???
The designs are always a part of geek culture, be that anime, comics, movies, etc, and they're affordable also (as of Jan 2015, $11 for a t-shirt + an expected amount of shipping & handling). For instance, this weekend they had a couple Deadpool shirts, a Big Hero 6/Iron Man mashup, Attack on Titan, My Neighbor Totoro and a Neon Genesis Evangelion.
What really gets you is the fact that the designs are only available for 24 hours at the normal price, and an additional 12 hours at an elevated price (+$5).
This means that #1, there's no "waiting for a sale", and #2, when you buy a design you can be relatively sure that you are going to be one of a very select few that owns that design.
Now, the artists that provide content for the site are (I believe) allowed to take their designs elsewhere, so it may be that you can get the shirt in some other manner down the line, but it's still a very effective marketing technique for Ript.
Also, some days are better than others, but there's rarely an entire week that goes by where I don't want (or actually buy) one of their shirts since I came across it.
I'm not getting a kickback for recommending this site, I just think it's awesome (and a little troubling since they've got me hooked — my fiancee and I have already bought something in the order of 10+ shirts/posters from Ript, but considering that we would have spent 2-3 times as much buying them at Hot Topic and they're higher quality and more unique at Ript, well I guess it's a good thing!).

WotA Weekly: Yggdrasil
Hi folks! Today we're talking about the World Tree, Yggdrasil.
Absorbing far more magick than the dragons were willing to use, Yggdrasil grew exponentially from Wochirden, the core of the planet Ao.
Yggdrasil grew in all directions, but especially towards the North and South Poles of the planet. Erupting from those continents (in WotA, there is a continent at the North Pole), Yggdrasil grew to pierce the sky, nearly one hundred miles above the planet on both poles.
The World Tree strengthened the Aegis of Ao and was responsible for nearly 50% of the world's supply of oxygen. It's oxygen-producing abilities are so great that animals and races are able to live in its uppermost branches on the edge of space with little difficulty.
Indeed, the size of the World Tree, greater than any mountain and inspiring the awe one feels when first witnessing the ocean, means that to many creatures living in its boughs and burrowing into its trunk, the World Tree *is* a world unto itself. There are entire civilizations living within the tree that never venture out into Ao proper.
A pool surrounds the World Tree on both poles, however both are more akin to a sea than a pool.
The North Pole branch of Yggdrasil is known as the Tree of Life and is the sometimes home of the manifestation of Polaris. The South Pole branch of Yggdrasil is known as the Tree of Wisdom and is home to Ziz as well as countless rocs.
So what do you think of WotA's World Tree? #1, subscribe, and comment below. Thanks for reading!
