Loving Day 2014…Interracial Romance in Entertainment: Is it realistic?

The goal of any form of entertainment is to present a story that draws its viewers away from their daily lives and into another reality. Settings and scenes can be unrealistic, and depending on what genre, a bit over the top. The beauty of it all is that IR couples have found their way into nearly every genre of books, movies, and television, thus expanding the entertainment options for lovers of Interracial Romance couples. Over the last few weeks, I have been taking advantage of television services such as Hulu and Netflix, and enjoying television shows from the 70’s up 2014. It has been interesting to watch the evolution of couples presented on television through the years. I’ll share with you some of my favorites.

Tom and Helen WillisThe Jefferson’s: Tom and Helen Willis (WM/BF) (Not Sure What their profession is)- Comedy- 1975-1985

I remember watching the show as a little girl and wondering why a black woman was married to a white man. Back then interracial couples on television were a rarity. Racist comments were often used by George Jefferson, in regards to the couple, who didn’t approve of their relationship, yet, the couples still managed to be friends. The depiction of Tom and Helen wasn’t always flattering, but their love was real. Not exactly the best stab at showing the realistic side of interracial romance, but it was a start.

Leverage: Alec Hardison and Parker (BM/WF) (The Hacker and the Thief)- Parker and HardisonAction/Crime/Mystery—2008-2012

I loved this show when it was on the air. Though the two characters didn’t start off as a couple, they were able to relate to one another due to unhappy childhoods. The sexual tension went on for a few seasons, but progressed as they became a couple. They writers even incorporated a storyline that dated back to the days of World War II (The Van Gogh Job; aired July 17, 2011). Hardison plays a black army officer who fell in love with a white woman in a small town, who is played by Parker, in the flashbacks. The reality of what the two characters went through during their time as an interracial couple brought to life the differences between society back then and society’s look at IR couples today. And just as the storyline with the couple got interesting, the series ended. Talk about disappointment!

Olivia and FitzScandal: President Fitzgerald Grant and Olivia Pope (WM/BF) (The President of the U.S. and the Fixer)- Drama/Thriller- 2012-Current

The popularity of this show is epic. It’s hard to tell what draws viewers to the show more, the fact that Olivia is an African American woman who is powerful in the world of politics, or if it’s because she’s an African American woman sleeping with the President of the United States. I’m pretty sure it’s a mixture of the two, but regardless, Shonda Rhimes and the show’s writers have grabbed viewers attention week after week.  And to make it even more interesting, Olivia’s heart has flipped between dating her ex (an African American male who is a political force himself), and another white male, the presidents friend, who has more power than the president. One thing is for sure; Olivia doesn’t cut herself short and sleep with the mail man! :)  How realistic is the storyline? It depends on your take of politics. Either way, it’s great entertainment!

Chicago Fire: Matthew Casey and Gabriela Dawson and (WM/HF) (The Firefighter and the Paramedic)- Chicago FireAction/Drama- 2012-Current

This show is all about the reality of the common man and woman in 2014 . The male lead is a firefighter who is a lieutenant; his love interest, a Hispanic female, is a paramedic who works at the same firehouse. At the end of this current season, she’s moved from being a paramedic to becoming a female firefighter. How awesome is that? So, not only are IR couples making a statement in television, they are also tackling the subject of strong women working in a male dominated field.

flyer2As an author who writes IR Romance novels, how has that affected my writing?

For starters, it’s encouraging to see writers in Hollywood are reaching out to an audience of viewers who come from diverse backgrounds and are looking for stories that reflect the reality of their lives. As an author, it is my goal to do the same for my readers.

A Heart Not Easily Broken features Ebony Campbell (BF) and Brian Young (WM). Jaded is about a Yasmine Phillips (Bi-racial Woman) and Zachariah Givens (BM). My latest release, Lonely Heart, features Kaitlyn Rodgers (WF) and Antonio Rodriguez (HM). The subjects I write about explore the reality of IR romance as my characters face life changing events. Topics such as family views of interracial dating, problems in the workplace, fulfilling lifelong dreams, recovering from a broken heart to find love again, the loss of a loved one due to breast cancer, becoming a single parent, and the repercussions of keeping secrets from the ones you love, are found in my novels- just to name a few. If you are looking for a series that takes you on an emotional rollercoaster ride will exploring the reality of life, love, friendship, and family, The Butterfly Memoirs series is for you. Take a moment to check out the characters and get to know them. Enjoy the rest of Loving Day 2014!

#NewRelease- Just My Type by Synithia Williams

*I’m proud to share the latest release from my friend, Synitha Williams! We meet three years ago on Twitter at a time we were both writing our fist novels. Shortly after, we both were signed to publishers, and have supported each other along the way. Check out her new release!*

Hi MJ,

Thanks for inviting me over to spotlight my book on your blog today. I’m very excited about the debut of my fourth novel, Just My Type. It’s the start of a new series featuring the Henderson Family. I started with the baby girl of the family, Janiyah Henderson and her long time crush Fredrick Jenkins. Fredrick a.k.a. Freddy, is her brother’s best friend, and for years these two didn’t think they belonged together. It was fun bringing their romance to life.

Excerpt:

Janiyah turned in the direction Marlena indicated, but her guy was nowhere to be seen. Instead, she made eye contact with a pair of light brown eyes that sent a familiar jolt through her system. It was the jittery feeling she got—and tried to ignore—whenever it came to Fredrick Percival Jenkins, aka Freddy. He was her brother Aaron’s best friend, and he’d spent so much time in her house as a kid he was like a brother.

He’d always been there. Hanging around playing video games with Aaron. Helping her with her math homework whenever she got stumped. Helping her go through college applications before graduation. Handing back her heart, crushed and broken in his hands, when at seventeen, she’d tried to give it—and her virginity—to him.

She would forever be embarrassed for throwing herself at Freddy back then. But thankfully, they’d made an unspoken agreement to never bring it up. Now they shared a close, but strictly platonic, friendship. They lived across the hall from each other. He teased her about the men she dated or her choice of colorful outfits, and she gave him grief about his exciting life of PBS documentaries and button up shirts.

She turned back to Liz. “You all were talking about Freddy?”

Liz sighed. “Don’t you know about his recent success?” Liz must have read the WTF look on her face. “You live right across the hall from him, but know nothing about what he does all day.”

Janiyah shrugged; it didn’t push away the discomfort that she’d somehow done wrong for not taking more of an interest in Freddy’s job. He was an accountant, for goodness’ sake. How interesting can it be looking at numbers all day?

Marlena grinned. “He’s smart, successful, and fine as hell. In other words, Columbia’s most sought after bachelor.”

Janiyah looked at Freddy then back at the woman. “Freddy?”

Then it hit her: Desiree was that woman Freddy broke up with a few months ago.

Freddy strolled over. “Hello, Janiyah, bright as usual.” His toffee colored gaze slowly roamed over her.

There went that damn feeling she tried to ignore when he looked at her like that, a stomach flutter followed by a slight clench. No matter how much her brain understood, her body sometimes forgot that she and Freddy were incompatible with a capital I. Freddy was as straight laced as they come, and even she would snort if someone used those words to describe herself. A complete turn off for a guy like him.

She tried not to care; he wasn’t really her type. Granted, he was good looking. If she were into conservatively dressed, light skinned guys, with sophisticated square framed glasses. He was five foot ten, taller than her, but not exactly towering. He made up for his lack of height with muscles. And, boy, did Freddy have nice muscles. He lifted weights routinely, the most exciting thing she thought he did. He also had a dimple in one cheek going for him. It only made rare appearances if she could coax a full blown smile out of him, and the canine tooth on his left side was crooked in a cute kinda way.

She gave him her brightest smile and bumped his shoulder with hers. “You love my dress, admit it.”

“You look like a stop sign,” he said in his usual voice that was part lecture and part teasing. In other words, the same tone her brothers used.

“And like that sign, I stop traffic.”

The corner of his mouth twitched. Dimple appearance a negative. “That you do.”

Contemporary Romance

Blurb:

Janiyah Henderson may be an adult, but her dad doesn’t see it that way. Granted, she’s enjoying her post-college life of little-to-no responsibility, but when her dad announces at a family meeting that she can’t handle working a “real job”, there’s only one thing to do: land a desk job and prove him wrong. When her brother’s best friend, Fredrick Jenkins, needs a new assistant, she knows she’s the perfect candidate. So what if she’s had a crush on the conservative accountant since she was nine? She’s the last woman Freddy would fall for.

But Fredrick is far from impervious to Janiyah’s charms. Though he can’t help but be attracted to her, he knows Janiyah is more interested in eating his cereal and teasing him than viewing him as more than the good guy next door. When he offers her the job, he can’t imagine her giving up her late mornings and colorful outfits for 8:00 a.m. meetings and pantyhose for too long. But as Janiyah excels as his employee, he fears he’s in danger of falling hard for a woman he shouldn’t care for.

Pretty soon the attraction they’ve tried to ignore boils to the surface. And after Fredrick shows Janiyah the man behind the numbers, she’s ready to show him that she’s just the type of woman he needs.

#8Sunday Sample: New Release!!!! LONELY HEART (Book 3 of The Butterfly Memoirs) –Observation…

*Today marks the last #8Sunday Sample of Lonely Heart! Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared excerpts from Chapters 1-3, letting each main character’s voice be heard as they share a bit about themselves and their story. I hope you liked it!  For more information about the characters, follow this link to learn more about Kaitlyn and Antonio.*

Kaitlyn has a dilemma. Her sister has been kicked out of her home and is now on a bus to come live with her. Being pregnant, living alone, dealing with financial issues, and a broke down car, the last thing she needs is a problem picking her sister up from the bus station. To her surprise, Antonio offers to take her where she needs to go since he has been unable to have her car repaired in time. What does she think about the situation?

Excerpt:

At least if I was now accepting rides from strangers, it helped he was attractive, or at least he could be. The last time I saw him he was wearing dirty overalls covered in grease and grime.

I went to my closet to find something to wear and tried remembering what he looked like. His hair was jet black and thick. He wore a five o’clock shadow that framed a nice pair of lips and warm smile. His red-brown eyes were very observant.

Not that any of that mattered…

At least once in his car there’d be no running away from telling me when my car would be ready

Life Changing Events Happen in an Instant…

blood reader

Every story I write focuses on a life changing event that sets the character on a different path in life, usually one they tried to avoid or had never thought about doing. I choose to write those types of stories because they are a true reflection of reality…of life.

My life course was altered in 2006 when I suffered a series of strokes that left me partially paralyzed and forever dependent on blood thinners to stay alive. My diet had to change, as well as exercise, which lead to a nearly full recovery (the paralysis lasted less than a week).

But I will be the first to admit that when it comes to the exercise portion of things, I’ve fallen off the wagon…a lot! My excuse: since becoming an author, I sit at my desk for hours on end, blogging, promoting, writing, editing, and interacting with readers, sometimes longer than the normal eight hour work day. And for someone who has to watch out for blood clots, (which is what lead to the stroke in the first place, and at that time, I was much more active than I am now!), it’s something I need to pay more attention to. And okay, I’ll admit it…I’m not an exercise fanatic. :)

Over the last three weeks, unexpected illness struck my household again, but this time, it was my husband. What was thought to be an onset of hemorrhoids gone really, really wrong, sent us to the emergency room. After a brief exam, it turned out to be an abscess that need to be drained immediately and treated with a serious round of antibiotics. But even worse, the illness sent him into sudden Type 2 Diabetes. Talk about a shocker! His sugar level was over 400 and he was immediately hospitalized. For over twenty-four hours, he was put on two types of insulin, his sugar checked every hour, and was unable to eat or drink. Fortunately, his sugar dropped dramatically by the morning and he was able to have surgery in order to help relieve the abscess and keep it from turning into something fatal. We left the hospital two days later armed with a handful of literature on how to manage Type 2 Diabetes and a plan: Change the family’s diet, and implement more exercise for EVERYBODY!!!

If you’ve been following my blog over the years, you know that I rarely talk about things this personal, but after the health scare we had, I felt it was necessary to educate as many of my blog readers as I can about the necessity of taking care of themselves.

For starters….do NOT avoid going to the emergency room if you feel strange and your body is telling you something is wrong! Forget the bills and don’t worry if you don’t have insurance! Life is important! There are programs in place that can help you!

Ladies, we know our men can be stubborn when it comes to seeing a doctor. They feel they can suck up the pain, handle it with some over the counter medicine, and then it will be all good. My husband is like that, too. In fact, this wasn’t the first time he’d had a problem with hemorrhoids. He took the steps he’d been instructed to take seven years ago when it happened, but after three days, he realized he was only getting worse, not better. The minute he told me we needed to go to the emergency room, I knew something was wrong. I’m so glad he didn’t put it off until later that evening or wait until the next morning. With his sugar being that high, (as I said, over 400 which is grounds for immediate hospitalization and treatment), he could have gone into a diabetic coma and we would have had no clue as to what the problem was. While diabetes runs in his family (and mine), he’d always been borderline, just under the range of being diagnosed with the disease. According to the doctor, the abscess, or infection, forced his body to work to heal itself, and in the process, produced an overabundance of insulin. This is what jumpstarted his diabetes.

**Fact: There are two main types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2…Do you know the differences?**

Type 1: This form is usually found in children and young adults. This is when the body does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone needed to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. – American Diabetes Association

Type 2: This most common form is when there is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. When this happens, your body does not use insulin properly. – American Diabetes Association

While the diagnosis is scary at first, the good thing is that it CAN BE MANAGED! BUT, it takes more than taking medicine and checking your blood sugar levels. It also means making changes to your diet and incorporating exercise, two of the simplest things in life, but yet the hardest to make happen. Some people with Type 2 diabetes- depending on the severity of the illness- with the proper changes in diet and increase in physical activity, can decrease the amount of insulin needed as a part of their management program. That means if done right, you may be able to go from having to take a shot, to taking a pill once a day. My husband has been told that if he looses weight, changes diet, and exercises, he may be able to do just that or even come off of it completely. It’s going to take time, dedication, and a lot of work. He’s not only determined to make it happen, he’s managed to get the rest of the house on board!

Here’s what we’re doing:

Exercise:

Okay, so this isn’t exactly everybody’s favorite thing to do, but it’s a necessity. It can be as simple as walking for twenty minutes a day. Simple, right? Yep! The point is to not be sedentary, to get your body moving, your blood flowing, and heart pumping. We’ve decided to make it a requirement that we, as a family, get together in the evenings and walk the dogs for an hour around our subdivision. We go in the evenings, at dusk when the sun is no longer pounding down, and the cooler air makes it a very pleasant activity. It’s amazing what fresh air, watching the sun set, and being away from all things electronic can do! You’ll find yourself refreshed, energized, and even though we’re not marathon walking, keeping a steady pace during the entire time works your muscles. If your day job has you sitting down for nearly eight hours a day, chained to a desk, you’ll be surprised at how much your body needs it. How does this work when it comes to diabetes? Walking causes your body to burn calories which uses the stored energy (insulin) in your body, thus dropping your blood sugar down and making it manageable. And for those of you who love to ‘sweat it out’, you can always power walk, run, jog, join a gym, and of course use those exercise tapes.  The point is activity. Find what works best for you, do it, then challenge yourself to do more.

Diet:

Okay, here’s the part that’s the most challenging! For diabetics, watching what you eat does not mean everything you eat has to be lacking taste. It’s a matter of knowing what is too much, what needs to be avoided, and what can only be used in moderation. The biggest things diabetics need to watch out for is carbohydrate and sugar counts on the labels. In the past, I’ve only focused on the sodium count (he’s also got high blood pressure), but now have started watching those numbers, too. It’s amazing exactly how much of those two things are found in everyday food! Sugar, well, that should be a given, anything overly sweetened or not using natural sugars, can push that glucose level into uncontrollable ranges, thus landing you back in the hospital. I had no idea that carbohydrates (breads, starches, etc., if not eaten in moderation) also break down into sugars, and can have the same results. We’ve started adding more fruits and vegetables into our diet, while decreasing the amount of sugar and bread. Eating sandwiches made from wraps or pita shells instead of loaf bread makes a huge difference. You focus on what’s on the inside of the wrap: the meat, veggies, lettuce, tomatoes, and seasonings. So much better for you! (Publix sandwiches never tasted so good!)

This is just the beginning of the changes being made in the Kane household. My husband has informed me that after we get the walking for an hour nightly routine down, he’ll be implementing additional exercise to our routine. In truth, I’m looking forward to it.

How else am I going to get in better shape for the face-to-face book signing events planned for the summer and fall? :)

Side Note: Last night we walked 2 miles in one hour! A RECORD!!!!! Finished up with push ups, and crunches. I swear I’m gonna get so skinny you’re gonna have to ask, “Where is she?” LOL!

About the Author:

Ashlynne Layne is an award winning songwriter, poet, and author of erotic paranormal and contemporary romance. She’s always had a soft spot in her heart for vampires but grew tired of the garlic fearing, sun-loathing night stalkers of old. An avid horror movie fan, she tends to enjoy media and music of a younger, more eclectic nature. This was the catalyst for her writing The Progeny.

Ashlynne loves writing on the edge—combining the erotica and romance genres—and thinks of Ascher and Shauna as the wicked, damned version of Romeo and Juliet. She is currently working on books six and seven of her Progeny Series, book one of her upcoming Alterity Series, and a novella spin off. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, reading, and spending time with her family. She juggles the hats of wife, mother, full time employee and part-time writer, hoping to write exclusively one day soon.

#FeaturedAuthor: Chelle Ramsey Shares an Excerpt from Bejeweled

I’m excited to welcome Chelle Ramsey, who is a member of my writers group, and her new release, Bejeweled: The Flight of an Angel! Check out this excerpt!

michelleramsey_bejewelled_hr (1)

Excerpt-Angel’s Intruder in the Knight

Angel woke up at 5 o’clock one Saturday morning after TJ had wet the bed. “Lil man, go back to the bedroom and wait for me, while I put these sheets in the washer,” Angel said, after pulling TJ out of the bathtub and wrapping him in a towel.

Coming out of the laundry room and heading back to her room, she ran dead smack into a body in the darkened hallway. She stumbled momentarily but not long before gathering her wits. The body was too compact and tall to be her mother’s and she knew it wasn’t TJ.

“Aiiiii!!! Get out! Get out of here!” Angel screamed to the top of her lungs. She began clawing and swinging on the body trying to land as many blows as possible. She was hoping her mother would hear and dial 911.

“Stop! Angel, stop right now!” her mother yelled as she ran down the hall and stepped between Angel and her would-be attacker.

“Mama, call 911, he’s breaking in. Run Mama, I got ‘im!” Angel screamed, still swinging.

“Angel! Quit that foolishness right now, I said!” Her mother scolded, grabbing her arms to still them.

“Huh?” Angel was out of breath from trying to save the family and her mother was mad at her? It didn’t make any sense.

Gathering a short robe tightly around her, her mother flicked on the hallway lights and turned back to Angel.

“Richard, this is my daughter, Angel. Angel, this is my…friend, Richard,” her mother introduced.

Angel looked at her mother who clearly appeared embarrassed over the entire situation. She was shocked to see her mother in a flimsy night robe and teddy.

“What the hell is going on?” Richard asked in a huffy tone. Light-skinned and standing only five feet and four inches tall, it was no surprise to Angel that she had given him a hard time. He wasn’t too much bigger than her. She was only 5’1 and 100 pounds having taken her small stature from her mother. Red scratches on his face were visible proof of Angel’s attempts to protect her family.

“Um, baby, remember I told you my daughter and grandson were moving back in here? Well this is my daughter I was referring to,” Eden, Angel’s mother stated.

“Mhmm. Well I gotta get going. I guess it was nice meeting you, Angel,” he grumbled and hurriedly walked past her to the front door.

Eden walked him to the door trying to appease him as he was on his way out. Angel ran to her bedroom remembering she had told TJ to stay there.

Her little boy stood in the middle of the bedroom floor shivering in his bath towel and looking frightened. “It’s okay, baby. Grandma Eden had company and I didn’t know it and got scared, that’s all. Are you alright?” she asked, leaning down to pick him up. He shook his head yes and looked at his mother with sad eyes.

“Come on, let’s get you dressed and back to bed, baby.”

Eden popped her head into the doorway. “Angel, I’ll talk to you later in the morning. Put that baby back to bed and get yourself some rest, you hear? I’m going to bed.”

“Yes, ma’am,” she replied and finished dressing TJ. She got the distinct impression her mother was upset with her, but she had done nothing wrong. What was a strange man doing creeping out of her mother’s bedroom at that time of the morning? She just knew Eden Gardner wasn’t doing a booty call. Uh-uh not her strong miss ‘independent-I-don’t-need-a-man’ mama.

ChelleRamseyAbout The Author

An avid reader since her primary years, Chelle saw books as an escape mechanism. Excited by the worlds, and characters that could be created with a touch of the imagination, she began writing her own stories at the age of 12. The more enamored with storytelling she became, the more she wanted to create stories about the suffering, and hardships she saw others enduring, with one twist…her characters would rise above their adversities and limitations, but not always with traditional endings.

This busy wife, and mother of three, exchanged her Girl Scout Leader pins for her creative writing pen, as she began to focus on publishing her novels. In her spare time, when she isn’t writing, she enjoys reading mystery novels, watching the NBA, remodeling their home with her husband, and spending time with him and their children. Having received her MBA in Human Resource Management, she says she cannot wait for the day when writing becomes her full-time career. “If I can show my readers they are not alone, in dealing with their challenges, and that they can rise above their limitations, I have achieved my goal,” Ramsey says.

And then Antonio, the mechanic who promised to fix her car, gets on the phone… Excerpt: “For starters, I have to pick my sister up from the bus station… tonight.” “What time should I pick you up?” I pulled the phone away from my ear, stared at the screen. “Excuse me?” “You need a ride and it’s my fault your car isn’t ready. This is the least I can do until it is. Think of me as your personal taxi service, free of charge.” “Um…, thanks.” ####
