What is it about fantasy that draws us in?

I was thinking about this the other day, the absolute unnecessary addiction that is fantasy: whether it is sci-fi films, paranormal romance novels, or a perhaps a peculiar and groundless steampunk obsession... Choose your poison. My particular fantasy poisons happen to be: Harry Potter, all things Princess Bride related, Lord of the Rings, Stardust, Star Wars, Tim Burton, The Lamplighter books, pirates, Norse mythology, and yes... steampunk.
Why? I have no answer, but one speculation: the real world is dull, but humans are not. OK the real world is not really dull. It can be beautiful, exciting, magical, and miraculous... but only in moments.
Here, there… these moments pin-prick our life lines like stars on an astrologer’s map, but in-between, there is undeniable mind-dulling, monotony. Stretches of tedious, tiring routine, and if one isn’t careful, one might find themselves submerged in the ocean that is ordinary life.
Fantasy and other escapists poisons are like little pink inner tubes that keep us afloat during the in-between. Otherwise we might not even be awake enough to enjoy those real life amazing, spectacular, my life should probably be on broadway, moments. Can’t see the sunrise from the bottom of the sea can you?
So drop your lap top and take a walk in the snow, but don’t feel bad if you have to watch "Elf" to get into the Christmas spirit or need to re-read all the Harry Potter books before you remember how fantastic it is not to be an orphan, and how happy you are to spend Christmas with your own peculiar family (that said, I might trade one of my family Christmases for a Weesely Christmas, if I’m guaranteed a sweater… all right no sweater, I’ll still take it).
