Der Drachenstich

...or To Stab the Dragon
We're off this weekend to Furth im Wald for the annual Festspiel called Der Drachenstich. The town Furth im Wald, in Czech Brod nad Lesy or Bavorsky Brod, lies in the Bavarian Forest directly on the Czech border.
Der Drachenstich is considered the oldest festival of this type, its first performance dating back to over 500 years ago. The play, now performed...

Hog Island

In spite of the bleeding slash on his thigh, Darrel caught his breathe after he’d somehow managed to make it out to Hog Island, his eyes now pinned on the feral sheep approaching his hiding place from every side. He had no bandages and no time was left to stuff anything, dried leaves or mud, into his pants leg to still the weeping wound. He tried to slow his breathing. The sound seemed to attract even more of the endangered species. His eyes scanned the herd, looking for a break in their rank...

Yet Another Friday Flash

The River by Laura Libricz
Calvin heard Old Man Hayes cough and cuss. Then the screen door slammed followed by the shot from a .22. Calvin knew he was in for it this time. He ran blind towards the sound of rushing water, the smell of rotting fish directing his steps. The recent rains had swelled the river up over its banks. The manuscript of my first novel will be coming back from my editor, Gary Smailes at BubbleCow , and I have set myself a publishing deadline of September 2012. In the event that this deadline pushes my sanity to the brink of destruction, I am allowing myself October as well.
Yes, I am self-publishing my book. Well, let’s call it independent self-publishing. And let’s not confuse indep...

Friday Flash

It Is Timeby Laura Libricz
Stomping boots echo off the stone floors. Torch light rounds the corner and the guards’ silhouettes march in step with their shadows. Silke slowly raises her head. The smell of leather and horse mingles with the moldy straw of her cell. Keys jangle and rattle the iron lock. She wants to scratch the numerous dried cuts on her scalp--they were brutal when they shaved her head looking for witch’s markings--but her hands are chained behind her back. Pain pounds no...

Flash Friday

The noticed android walks past a wondering chamber. He stops to peek in through the dirty window. He wipes his muddy hand on the window, to get a better look, only to smear the glass with mud. He tries the brass door knob but it is locked. Turning his head, he presses one lopsided ear to the wooden door then straightens, shaking his head as if he is dissatisfied.
I set the stemmed glass I hav...
