Moving Slowly

Moving Slowly
by Gabe Redel

Minds fail in disease.
They deteriorate until only the shape
of the person that once spoke its voice
is recognizable.

We hear the answers.
They are shouted from round cones
and hung on the grocery store bulletin
muttered in our conscience
until we learn that it is truth
or we let the roar of the world’s dreams
push it from our hands.

The infections of our minds
will inch along slowly
through the base of our bodies.

They will be adrift,
silent and moving in a way
that isn’t detectable
by our own hands
or our eyes
when we search the list of the day
for what is most important,
for what can be easily moved
and seen and felt and known to have obvious results.

God is like this.
Moving quietly.

When our thoughts spread and split
and our tongues no longer taste what our mind would tell us
and we don’t know how we had ever gotten here
and we scream at the days that have fallen against our desperation
what is the way in which we should go?
