Giver or Receiver?

“You’re all I want. You’re all I’ve ever needed.”

We need to be careful about the theology of songs. If God is all you’ve ever needed, He wouldn’t have created anyone else on earth.

There are countless Scriptures that tell us that we need each other as well starting with the very beginning where God said, “It is not good for man to be alone.”* Even though man’s relationship with God was unhindered at the time, it was still not enough. Man needed relationship with other human beings.

Sometimes it’s easier to just cry out in desperation, in our pain from broken relationships, that God is all we’ve ever needed. But the truth is we need each other. We need to bear another’s burdens...and have help with our burdens*. We need to encourage others...and be encouraged by others*.

We are people who need to both give and receive. To bless and be blessed. You are not either a person in need or a person who provides for others needs. You are both. If you are doing one but not the other, then you won't be content.

* Scripture references in order: Genesis 2:8, Galatians 6:2, Hebrews 3:13.
