Book Description:

The Indians and the Crackedskulls are locked in the turmoil of war and presently in a stalemate. Her enemies, Raven and Bloodhawk, have come up with a scheme to up the ante and break the stalemate into their favor. Neiko later finds out that a land she thought she had only imagined is actually real and contains a legendary and otherworldly evil within it. Not only that, she becomes trapped there and must escape the world, the people within it, and the sinister evil within.

Neiko must find her way back home and turn the tables on her enemies. Can she come back home and escape the evil that seeks to claim her?

Neiko’s Five Land Adventure Excerpt:

After her eyes adjusted to the glare, the two friends could see there was a cavern that was full of perfect crystals. They were in all shapes, sizes, and colors and they came out of the walls, floor, and ceiling. The beauty was spellbinding. “Wow! If I found this in Hawote, then I’d be rich! This is a rock collector’s dream come true!”

“Yeah, but didn’t you say that there were writings about Ramses somewhere in here? I wonder where the ruins of Shadazar are,” Quickstrike rambled.

“Somewhere in here, I guess, and I think we’re close. Let’s keep walking and look at the walls. If there are any branch-offs, then we’ll split up. If you find anything, then come looking.”

“Actually, I’d rather stick together, so we won’t get separated.”

“Good idea, well, I like that idea better too,” she said as they journeyed deep into the caverns. They walked and looked at the walls, but all they found were arrangements and shapes created by crystal; they gleamed and sparkled when the light hit them like multicolored diamonds. Luckily for them, there were no branch-offs, and the caverns appeared as if they were carved into the crystal. New formations were growing in the hewn walls.

Neiko found several broken pieces on the cavern floor; she picked them up and slipped them into her pocket.

“Look, there’s an exit up ahead,” said Quickstrike as he saw a break in the glamour and a darkened cave. As they entered the door, darkness overtook them and there were ruins just ahead. “We found what’s left of ancient Shadazar!”

“Yeah, and we have an underground lake to cross. I wonder what’s on the other side.”

“I dunno, but I’ve noticed the further we go in, the further we go back in time, so that could mean the writings are probably after the lake. How do we get across?”

“There’s a boat right there.” They climbed into the boat, and Neiko got the oars and began to paddle while Quickstrike carried the torch. They could see broken columns and the remains of a bridge that possibly was a shortcut long ago towering over them. She kept paddling, and then they saw a waterfall just ahead. Neiko paddled around it and parked the boat on the bank of the hidden cavern. When they entered the hallway, there were pictures and writings. “Neiko, look! We found it!”

“Hmm,” she said as she looked at the letters which were surprisingly in the alphabet of her tribe.

“Well, it’s written in English, but it is written in the alphabet of my tribe. This will be easy for me to translate.”

“That’s good. So, what does it say?”

Neiko looked at the battling figures and the dark, shadowy form of the Dark Pharaoh fighting and slaying them. She ran her finger under the letters as she read. “This is talking about something called the Good Pharaohs. It says that God created powerful beings called Pharaohs to protect the universe from evil.

Book Description:

Seeking his revenge on Neiko for exposing him, Francesco banishes Neiko into ancient Egypt just like he did her friends eleven years ago. During her stay there, she unravels the mystery of what happened to her four friends. Now she’s faced with a bigger problem—how to get home. After a series of unfortunate events, Neiko is now entangled with Pharaoh Ramesses II. Francesco also comes to make sure their fates are sealed. Can Neiko and her friends beat impossible odds and return to Hawote and back to the present?

Escape from Ancient Egypt Excerpt:

Neiko’s vision turned from the green light to the world spinning around her in dizzying speed. Neiko wasn’t moving, but she felt like she was in freefall—like someone had cut the cable from an elevator and she was plummeting with it. Descending in what—space and time? The evergreen and colorful deciduous vegetation of the Hawote woodlands changed to a desert with a river with some greenery and palms nearby. The cool autumn air of Hawote in October transformed into stifling, searing, dry heat. Pyramids, sphinxes, and strange statues spun around her after her house, porch, and front yard disappeared within the vortex. It was nighttime in Hawote, but the sun rose and set as time flew by—from west to east--backwards. Beneath her bare feet the wood from her front porch turned to nothing then into hot, soft sand.

Neiko’s world stopped spinning, and the sun was high in the sky. Neiko watched the sun to be sure it didn’t move again. Wherever she ended up, she guessed the time must be about high noon there judging by the sun’s position in the sky after a few moments of observation. The heat was intense, and she discovered she must be somewhere far from home. “Where?” was the ultimate question. A gust of wind blew the feathers in her long, black hair. Her hair wrapped around her face, and she brushed it back. Sweat beaded out on her body, and she tugged at her shirt and headband. “Phew! It’s hot out here! Where am I--Death Valley?” she asked. Death Valley was the only desert place she thought of off the top of her head. She had never been there, but she’d read and watched TV programs about the place. She looked around, and a city was only a few feet away. She could see the buildings down below from the high dune where she stood. She took a deep breath and fingered the fringed sheath of her knife to reassure her confidence—without thinking and by instinct. Then after a few more seconds, she trudged down to the city in the soft sand from the dune to go find some answers.

Neiko entered the city still dressed in her buckskin, decorated warrior clothes and painted for war. As she took in the sights and from the confusion, she had forgotten she was armed. Her machete was sheathed to her back, and so was her knife on her side. Incense, perfumes, and music filled the air. She didn’t recognize any of the smells, but the music seemed to be like Egyptian reenactments in movies. The buildings were white alabaster covered in brilliant wall paintings. Some men rode on camels like horses and others led them by a leash. Chariots cantered by. Neiko looked around in amazement. This ruled out Death Valley, Arizona. Neiko lifted her eyes to the sun to get a bearing on north. North was as good of a direction as any to begin a search for answers. After her eyes fell from the sun and to the north, she could see the Pyramids of Giza towering in the distance. She recognized them instantly. She had seen enough pictures and documentaries on the monuments—they were unmistakable. Even though they were miles away, they towered above the city and in view. This definitely wasn’t Death Valley.

In that case I can get on the first flight home, she thought. She believed that she had landed in Cairo. This city came to mind because it's the only one close to the Pyramids of Giza. Then she realized she didn’t have any money as she put her hands in the pockets of her buckskin shorts and only felt the house key. She had left her wallet in the car back at home when she left from Phoenix’s house after the battle.

“Well, I can probably make up some story that I was abducted or something—which is sort of true. Really funny, Francesco. I guess you meant no way back since I’m broke. I’ll hitchhike back to Hawote if I have to. I’ll scrounge around to see if I can find some change for a pay phone on the road,” she remarked to herself, and maybe the phone book would have some information on where to find an airport or something. But, then again, would the phonebook be written in English or Arabic? It was a chance she had to take. The worst that could happen was not getting anywhere.

Neiko began walking to find help, change, a pay phone, the U.S. Embassy, an airport, or whatever she could find first. After a few more minutes of exploring, she recognized the clothing of the people: white linen kilts, some wore robes and fine jewelry, some wore headcloths while others did not. No one seemed to be dressed like the Arab residents of 21st century Egypt. “Why is everyone dressed like ancient Egyptians?” she asked herself. She wondered if this was some sort of a cult or a weird secret society that lived like the Amish in Cairo.

A small group of armed soldiers marched in front of her, but they didn’t pay any attention to her. They carried swords, shields, spears, and were dressed in ancient Egyptian armor. She had seen it in books and movies. They weren’t carrying guns or dressed in desert camouflage BDUs like Egyptian soldiers of the 21st century.

She headed farther in to the marketplace. It was obvious since people had shops and bazaars selling goods. People were yelling and haggling. People thrust things at Neiko trying to entice her to buy. Neiko put up her hands and shook her head. She couldn’t understand a word anyone was saying. Funny, no one seemed to be selling T-shirts, souvenirs, or that type stuff for tourists. Quite frankly, no one seemed to be selling any maps.

Neiko walked up to a man who was a merchant at a bazaar. He was selling all manner of fine jewelry. Heavy collars, bracelets, necklaces, arm pieces, earrings were on display. All gaudy like the ancient Egyptians liked. “Excuse me, can you tell me where I am? I seem to be lost. Do you know where I can find a map or where the airport is? A phone?” she asked as she made her hand like a phone and put it to her ear; her thumb the earpiece and her pinkie the mouthpiece.

The man looked at her startled because of her strange appearance and because he couldn’t understand her. He was dressed in linen like everyone else and sported some of that same Egyptian bling since he was a successful jeweler.

“That’s a little out of style, don’t you think? I mean, guys don’t wear eyeliner…and, that skirt and that sheet on your head are not how people dress nowadays. People dress like ancient Egyptians only on Halloween. Last I checked it was still three weeks away,” Neiko said to the man as she shook her head.

Author Interview with Dora Machado author of The Curse Giver.

The Curse Giver Banner 450 x 169

Today on the blog we have Dora Machado for an interview. Sit back and let’s find out more about this wonderful author.

Author Interview

Did you always wanted to be a writer?

Yes! I've wanted to be a writers since as far back as I can remember.

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Good question! I think I only began to call myself a writer after my first book, Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone, was published.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

About a year from beginning to end. It felt like a century!

Do you do another job except for writing?

Not anymore! These days I'm lucky enough to write full time and I'm enjoying every minute of it.

What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in fewer than 20 words what would you say?

My latest book is called The Curse Giver. Twenty words, eh? Why, let's give the old logline a try: An innocent healer condemned to death must ally with the cursed lord pledged to kill her to defeat the curse giver who has already conjured their ends.

Who is your publisher?

I'm a very lucky gal. The Curse Giver was published by Twilight Times Books, an independent publisher based out of Kingsport, Tennessee, that specializes in publishing critically acclaimed literary, mystery and SF/F books. A dynamic, top-of-the-line, quality-oriented publisher, TTB has more than 140 titles in the 2013 Spring Catalogue and is the home of a talented and friendly bunch of authors who have enriched my publishing experience. Check out TTB at http://twilighttimesbooks.com/

How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?

It takes me about four months, give or take a little. Keep in mind that the time invested is not always consecutive when you are working on a novel. Sometimes I'll advance one project and then shift to another novel, before going back to complete the first one.

What can we expect from you in the future? More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

You can expect more stories from me in the future, more dark fantasy romance, a dark contemporary fantasy with a Latin twist, and more about the world of The Curse Giver in its companion novel, The Soul Chaser.

What genre would you place your books into?

The Curse Giver falls into the fantasy genre and fits well in the subcategories of epic fantasy, dark fantasy, fantasy romance and romantic fantasy.

What made you decide to write that genre of book?

I've always been intrigued by the fantasy genre. I love the genre's creative freedom, the opportunity to rethink, redesign and reinterpret the human experience, the creative challenges that that arise from world building, and the mysteries that magic brings to the human equation. I grew up in the Dominican Republic and my life always felt kind of magical in many ways. I've always straddled different worlds. Fantasy is a perfect fit for me.

Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?

I do. I think it's a tossup between the main characters, Bren and Lusielle. I've always been a sucker for the underdog, the reluctant hero and the tortured soul. In The Curse Giver, Bren, Lord of Laonia, is all of those. He's got the makings of a hero, but his circumstances make him an outcast and a villain in his own mind. He is weary, bitter and troubled, but he's also dutiful and determined, and he will not betray his people. As the story begins, he rescues Lusielle from the pyre, but only because he's hunting a birthmark she bears. To defeat the curse that has obliterated his family and is killing him, he has to murder the woman who bears the birthmark in the foulest possible way. But as he escapes with his prey in tow, she is not what he expected. He faces yet another dismal choice: Can he murder the only woman capable of healing more than his body, his soul?

Lusielle is also one of my favorite characters in The Curse Giver, but for a totally different reason. When the story begins, she's been betrayed by her greedy husband and condemned to die for a crime she didn't commit. After years of abuse and slavery, the false accusations destroy her bleak but orderly world. As she flees with the bitter lord who has rescued her, she finds herself in an impossible situation: If she's going to survive, she must help the mysterious lord who is determined to kill her to defeat the curse giver who has already conjured their ends. What I like most about Lusielle is that she has to change; she has to muster the courage to free herself from her tragic past and find the strength within to thrive in a world she doesn't understand.

How long have you been writing? And who or what inspired you to write?

I've been writing for publication for about seven years now. I'm inspired to write by many people and many experiences, but ultimately, I write because I can't stop writing. I swear. I've tried. I just can't. My mind is powered by this story generator that keeps on going and won't quit.

Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? Do you listen to music, sit in a certain chair…?

I'm one of those people who prefer to write in silence. I guess my mind is way too noisy as it is! I have a writing studio in my home, a cozy little room that opens up to a veranda that overlooks a beautiful, spring-fed river. It's quiet and peaceful, and it's my favorite place to write. I like to sit on my favorite chair, a Scandinavian ergonomic design that offers excellent support for the long hours of writing.

Do you choose a title first, or write the book, then choose the title?

I usually discover the title of my novels at the very moment when I write it for the first time into the story. It can happen early on, during the opening paragraph or late in the process. It's really neat. It's always a "wow" moment.

Are there any hidden messages or morals contained in your books? (Morals such as those in Aesop’s Fables: "The moral of this story is..")

I don't strive to preach any kind of morality in my stories, but I do write a lot about conflicting situations, injustice, opposing beliefs, and the meaning of concepts such as truth, faith and prejudice. Sometimes, the storyline leaves me and my readers thinking about things. For example, in The Curse Giver we join with the characters as they discover how reason, knowledge and awareness are the main components of our personal sense of strength. We don't have to be magical to be strong. We just have to believe in ourselves.

Which format of book do you prefer, e-book, hardback, or paperback?

I'm partial to the indestructible, beach-proof, throw-it-in-your-bag, good old-fashioned paperback. I love the feel of a book between my hands. But I will confess—albeit reluctantly—that my latest e-reader has been growing on me. The idea that I can carry ALL of my favorite books around in my purse is irresistible.

Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is your favorite/worst book-to-movie transfer?

I think that books and movies are two different and distinct media. I usually approach them with different expectations. What makes a book great is not the same thing that will work for a movie. The translation is particularly challenging for science fiction and fantasy. There are an awful lot of great SF/F books that have been made into terrible movies. I used to say that I never wanted to see my books made into movies. That is, until I watched George R. Martin's Game of Thrones on HBO. It might be time to rethink the old prejudices. . .

Your favorite food is?

Cake. I know. Not a good one. I like carrots too. Does that help?

Your favorite singer/group is?

That would be a long list!

Your favorite color is?

Blue.

The Curse Giver Chapter One

Dread stared at Lusielle from the depths of the rowdy crowd. Concealed under a heavy hood, only the stranger’s black eyes dared to meet her gaze among the growing throng. The man’s eyes refused to flinch or shift from her face. His stare was free of the hatred she had gotten from the others, but also devoid of mercy. He held on to her gaze like an anchor to her soul, testing her fortitude, knowing full well her fears’ vast range.

She had always been meant for the fire. Even as she had escaped the blaze that killed her parents and burned the inn to the ground, Lusielle had known that the flame’s greedy god would return to claim her life. But she hadn’t expected it to happen after days of torture, surrounded by the raging mob, found guilty of a crime she didn’t commit, betrayed and condemned.

The town’s cobbler, one of her husband’s best customers, tightened the noose around her neck until it cut off her breath. She had waited on him countless times at the shop, and had always padded his order with a free measure of coriander to help with his wife’s cough.

But none of the town’s inhabitants seemed to remember any of her kindnesses as of late. On the contrary, the crowd was booing and jeering when they weren’t pelting her with rotten fruit. They treated her as if she were a common thief.

The brute who had conducted her torture shoved the cobbler aside, tying her elbows and wrists around the wooden stake. Orell. She remembered his name. His bearded face might have been handsome if not for the permanent leer. Like the magistrate, he wore the king’s burgundy colors, but his role had been more vicious. Had he been granted more time, he might have succeeded at extracting the false confession he wanted, but the magistrate was in a hurry, afraid of any possible unrest.

Orell yanked on the ropes, tightening her bonds. The wound on her back broke open all over again. She swallowed a strangled hiss. It was as if the thug wanted her to suffer, as if he had a private reason to profit from her pain.

But she had never seen him until three days ago, when he and the magistrate had shown up unannounced, making random accusations.

Lusielle couldn’t understand any of this.

She knew that the king’s justice was notoriously arbitrary. It was one of the main reasons why she loathed living under King Riva’s rule. But she also knew better than to express her opinion. Ruin and tragedy trailed those who dared to criticize the king. That’s why she had never mentioned her misgivings to anyone.

What had she done to deserve this fate? And why did they continue to be so cruel? After all, she wasn’t fighting them anymore.

True, she had resisted at first. Out of fear and pride, she had tried to defend herself. But in the end, it hadn’t mattered. Her accusers had relied on the testimony of the devious liar who had turned her in—Aponte Rummins—her own husband.

The mock hearing had been too painful to bear, too absurd to believe. Aponte swore before the magistrate that Lusielle was a secret practitioner of the forbidden odd arts. It was ridiculous. How could anyone believe that she, who had always relied on logic, measure and observation to mix her remedies, could possi¬bly serve the Odd God’s dark purposes? And how could anyone believe Aponte’s lies?

But they did, they believed him as he called on his paid witnesses and presented fabricated evidence, swearing that he himself had caught her at the shop, worshipping the Odd God. In the end, it had been her husband’s false testimony that provided the ultimate proof of the heinous charge for which Lusielle was about to die.

Burning torch in hand, the magistrate stepped forward. Still in shock, Lusielle swallowed a gulp of bitter horror and steeled for the flames’ excruciating pain. She didn’t want to die like a shrieking coward. But nothing could have prepared her for what happened next.

The magistrate offered the torch to Aponte.

“The king upholds a husband’s authority over his wife in the kingdom,” the magistrate shouted for the crowd to hear. “There can be no protests, no doubt of the wisdom of royal justice if a husband does as he’s entitled to do by his marital rights.”

Aponte could have forgone her execution. Considering the magistrate’s proclamation, he could have chosen a different punishment for her. Instead, he accepted the torch and, without hesitation, put the flame to the tinder and blew over the kindling to start the fire.

“Go now,” he said, grinning like a hog about to gorge. “Go find your dark lord.”

Lusielle glared at the poor excuse for a man who had ruined her life many times over. She had known from the beginning that he was fatally flawed, just as he had known on the day he claimed her that she couldn’t pledge him any affection.

But Aponte had never wanted her affection. He had wanted her servitude, and in that sense she proved to be the reluctant but dutiful servant he craved.

Over the years he had taught her hatred.

His gratification came from beating and humiliating her. His crass and vulgar tastes turned his bed into a nightmare. She felt so ashamed of the things he made her do. Still, even if she loathed him—and not just him, but the slave she had become under his rule—she had tried to make the best of it.

She had served him diligently, tending to his businesses, reorganizing his stores, rearranging his trading routes and increasing his profits. His table had always been ready. His meals had been hot and flavorsome. His sheets had been crisp and his bed had been coal-warmed every night. Perhaps due to all of this, he had seemed genuinely pleased with their marital arrangement.

Why, then, had he surrendered her so easily to the magistrate’s brute?

Aponte had to have some purpose for this betrayal. He was, above all, a practical man. He would not surrender all the advantages that Lusielle brought to him—money, standing, common sense, business acumen—without the benefit of an even greater windfall.

Lusielle couldn’t understand how, but she was sure that the bastard was going to profit handsomely from her death.

The scent of pine turned acrid and hot. Cones crackled and popped. The fire hissed a sinister murmur, a sure promise of pain. She didn’t watch the little sparks grow into flames at her feet. Instead, her eyes returned to the back of the crowd, seeking the stranger’s stare. She found him even as a puff of white smoke clouded her sight and the fire’s rising heat distorted his scarred face’s fixed expression.

The nearing flames thawed the pervasive cold chilling her bones. Flying sparks pecked at her skin. Her toes curled. Her feet flinched. Pain teased her ankles in alarming, nipping jolts. Dear gods. They were really going to burn her alive!

Lusielle shut her eyes. When she looked again, the stranger was gone from the crowd. She couldn’t blame him. She would have never chosen to watch the flame’s devouring dance.

A commotion ensued somewhere beyond the pyre. People were screaming, but she couldn’t see through the flames and smoke. She flinched when a lick of fire ignited her shift’s hem. A vile stink filled her lungs. Her body shivered in shock. She coughed, then hacked. Fear’s fiery fingers began to torment her legs.

“Come and find me,” she called to the God of fire.

And he did.

When the "Higher Power" grows bored and restless games are made. Souls are torn apart for fun, more souls are used in wicked collector games, and souls are twisted in cruel destinies.

This anthology is a collective piece of work to show different and beautifully crafted ideas of the plight ones soul must endure. Simple love and life are tainted and broken in these stories of love, betrayal, longing, and fate.

Excerpt-

“Get out of my way!” I shoved at the thick crowd, hearing others curse at me as I pushed them to the side. I didn’t care if they were woman or man; I needed to get through to find the one person who held the one thing that could save me. It was my only mission, and I wanted it to be over, already. Centuries of searching had left its mark on me. I was tired, and I longed for the end.

But she was gone, and I was left alone once more. Exasperated, I stood at the edge of the sidewalk, letting the scorching breeze of the speeding cars along the street hit me, sending my long blonde hair whipping in the air. One step and I could end it. But then, she would win the prize. I had not gone through all this pain—all this time—to let her win. I would never let her claim the prize. It was mine. This I had known since the day we were born.

***

“I wasn’t the one who signed over your soul to that demon Olivia,” Kaiya reached for her hidden blade in her sapphire dress. “You gave it up for power.”

“You banished me to that hell hole!” Olivia’s voice grew deeper. “We could have been so powerful together!”

“I never wanted that,” Kaiya dodged another attack and pointed her dagger at her sister.

Olivia hissed between her fangs that elongated and peeked out from her lips. Kaiya felt her heart break. Her twin sister, once her best friend, had become the very thing they used to hunt. They had been the best demon hunters across the seven kingdoms.

***

“Drake, where are we going?” I asked.

We’re going to my vacation home in Half Moon Bay. I have a feeling that Thaddius is on the hunt for you, and my place is close to the beach, secluded, and safer than here. When you were with him, did you ever get the feeling that he was off, as in—otherworldly—mentally unstable?” Drake glared at me, apparently anxious for a response.

As I glanced up at him over the rim of my coffee cup, my response was automatic, “Yes, on several occasions. But I just chalked it up to him being a complete, pompous asshole. Why do you ask?”

“Because things don’t add up, Shilo. He has no footprints, and there’s no record of his existence in any system. What gives? It’s almost as if he simply appeared.” He tapped his fingers on the table, obviously unnerved by the fact that he’d learned nothing about Thaddius from his investigation.

Monique O’Connor James

Monique is the mother of two beautiful children and lives in a small community outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She currently works full-time as an insurance agent, but her favorite jobs are mother, wife, and author. On her ninth birthday, her mother bought her a journal and said, "Write whatever you want. Just write." And so, a love affair with words was born.

She wrote poetry and short stories in high school and college, until 1993 when her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. After her mother's death in 1998, deep in depression, she found herself unable to write. Nine years passed, and only on rare occasions did she attempt to write. Finally, in 2007, under the urging of friends, she sat down and pecked out her first novel. It was raw and unpolished, but the process had been unquestionably cathartic.

The next three years were spent filling her hard drive with seven complete manuscripts. At the beginning of 2011, Monique decided it was time to edit the work and share it with the world. She hopes you enjoy the ramblings of a truly southern girl raised in a state rich with heritage and love.

In June of 2011 her first book, The Keepers, was published by Astraea Press and it has been a whirlwind of excitement ever since. Please check out her website and feel free to contact her at any time via her email, facebook, or twitter.

Author Interview with Jonathan Winn author of Martuk The Holy

Martuk the Holy Banner 450 x 169

Today on the blog we have Jonathan Winn author of Martuk The Holy for an interview. Let’s find out more about this author. Author Interview
Did you always wanted to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?Actually, I was an actor first, mainly on the New York stage and a bit of television and independent film.  The writing happened by accident, primarily with screenwriting and then writing "Martuk ... the Holy" (as in "two" with a hard "k" at the end ... Martuk).  The acting will be something I'll gladly revisit once my films go into production, and the writing will never stop. When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?The moment a friend of mine, who's a film producer, read my first script and didn't tear it to pieces.  She's a notorious critic and actually, sincerely loved what I did.  Her support surprised me and made me take myself seriously as a writer. How long did it take to get your first book published?I chose the self-publishing route, so it was a fairly quick process.  I have found, though, because of the high quality, that most mistakenly believe the book was traditionally published.  Now I'm finding myself with some interesting traditional publishing opportunities, so we'll see what happens.  Still early, but I'm definitely open to having those conversations. Do you do another job except for writing and can you tell us more about it?I'm incredibly lucky that writing IS my job.  From morning to night, it's what I do and what I get to focus on.What is the name of your latest book, and if you had to summarize it in less than 20 words what would you say?My debut novel is called "Martuk ... the Holy" and it's about an immortal man in modern Paris who, tormented by demons, is forced to revisit his violent past. How long does it usually take you to write a book, from the original idea to finishing writing it?I have several books in various stages of planning -- random thoughts, chapter maps, treatments, finished manuscript --, so I tend to work on whatever feels "right" to do.  As for writing the book, I average 2K words a day, so, ideally, it takes a month -- give or take -- to write a full-length novel.  But I'm also balancing my fiction writing with writing screenplays and plays, rewriting earlier screenplays and teleplays that are in development with producers, rewriting the rewrites, etc and so on.  So although I don't get to work on my books every day, I do focus on them at least three times a week.  What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?Definitely more books of the same genre.  I have "Martuk ... the Holy:  Proseuche", the sequel to "Martuk ... " slated for release in late-2013/early-2014, and the sequel to that, "Martuk ... the Holy:  Shayateen", slated for a 2015 release.  Plus I'm continuing The Martuk Series, a collection of ongoing short fiction based on "Martuk ... the Holy".  The fourth installment, "The Tall Priest", should be ready in a few weeks and I'm still hoping to have the series adapted into graphic novels.  That's an ongoing conversation.  As for changing genres, I don't think so.  There's something quite fantastic about writing horror.  It's an endless world of possibility.  Plus it's always nice to take something ordinary and turn it into something terrifying. What genre would you place your books into? It's safe to say I'd be placed in the Dark Fiction, Horror, Literary Horror corner of the market.  Probably with a dunce cap on and facing the wall in a Time Out, but, still, that's the corner I'd be in.What made you decide to write that genre of book?Like I said, the possibilities are endless.  Not only can you create beings that could never walk the earth, you can recreate what we see as "normal" into something that gives you pause, makes you doubt, and then remind yourself that, No, no, it's only a chair.  A simple harmless chair.  ;-)Do you have a favorite character from your books? And why are they your favorite?I do have an affinity for Martuk, of course.  There's something intriguing about his constant struggle between wanting to be "good" and royally screwing up in a very bad bloody way.  Plus you can't help but feel for him, this soul trapped by time through no fault of his own.  But I'm also fascinated by The Magician and The Wounded King as well as The Elder and Mot (aka Mother of Time).  And Shamisé, in "The Elder" (Book Two, The Martuk Series) is someone I definitely need to write more about.  What's fascinating is that these are characters who started out as brief pieces in Martuk's narrative puzzle and ended up, in my mind -- as well as in The Martuk Series -- as something much, much more.  There are just so many layers to these people.  And they have such fascinating histories.  You can't possibly peel that all away in just one book. How long have you been writing?, and who or what inspired you to write?I started with screenwriting in the summer of 2004 and from there I just kept going.  I kind of accidentally fell into my niche.  When it comes to Martuk, I woke up one morning in the spring of 2008 and had the whole series of books right there, ready to go.  I made coffee, sat down, started cluttering up a Word Doc with random thoughts and musings, and it all fell into place.Do you have a certain routine you have for writing? ie You listen to music, sit in a certain chair?I sit on the couch with my laptop on my lap, my 16-year old dachshund Cinnamon sleeping next to me, plop my headphones on -- I simply cannot write without music -- and, coffee within reach, just go at it.  That's literally how I spend my days, all day, every day.  Even weekends.Do you read all the reviews of your book/books?Yes, mostly.  Sometimes.  I read the good and the not so good.  Fortunately, with Martuk, the reviews have been very kind and generous.  But the thing about reviews is you can't take them seriously.  I've seen reviews heaping effusive, breathless praise on the most inane, poorly written drivel and reviews cruelly blasting books that were simply fantastic!  So you have to take it all with a pinch of salt.  Now, that doesn't mean you sometimes won't find some really good advice in the not so good reviews.  But, good or bad, you can't accept it as gospel truth.  Keep an open mind and put it all in perspective.  Someone's opinion of your work shouldn't decide whether or not you find the courage to write again.Do you choose a title first, or write the book then choose the title?I've found the titles come first and, from there, the books comes. How do you come up with characters names and place names in your books? This is a bit difficult to answer because I'm not sure how I came up with the characters' names.  They were just kind of there and I ran with it.  Of course, in the case of people like The Elder and The Magician, they wear their titles because that's how they're known to Martuk.  His dealings with them are so brief and so horrible, there just isn't time for names.  As for place names, I write of real places that actually exist or existed -- modern Paris, the ancient city of Uruk, 1st-century Jerusalem, Antioch --, so it's just a matter of doing the research to make sure I get those small details right.Do you decide on character traits (ie shy, quiet, tomboy girl) before writing the whole book or as you go along?I believe the key to great writing is knowing who's who and where the story's going, and then getting out of the way and letting it do what it's going to do.  Just letting Martuk and The Magi and The Old Crone be who they're going to be and do what they're going to do is, for me, the real joy of writing.  And I tend to find that the "good" people do "bad" things and the "bad" people do "good" things.  No one is just one or the other, and that's how I like it.  I want them to surprise me, shock me, upset me, disgust me, make me proud, and prove me wrong.  None of that can happen if I'm holding the reins too tight.  Writing fiction is a great exercise in learning to let go and trust your creativity.Which format of book do you prefer, eBook, hardback, or paperback? If I'm at home and rewarding myself with a bit of time to read for pleasure -- these days, much of my reading is research for the sequel to Martuk  --, I do love my hardback books.  I have way too many, all remnants of my travels over the years.  If I'm flying from A to B, though, obviously it's great tossing my iPad with my Kindle into the carry-on bag and having a whole library to choose from. What is your favorite book and Why?  Have you read it more than once?I've often said Anne Rice's "The Witching Hour" is a fantastic read.  I remember just being stunned by the scope and the scale and the sheer ambition of her storytelling.  It's been awhile since I've read it, though, so it'd be interesting to pick it up and, as someone who now writes, see how different it feels.Do you think books transfer to movies well? Which is you favorite/worst book to movie transfer? It depends.  In my opinion, Game of Thrones, though not a movie, has transferred very well from a written medium to a visual one.  The Harry Potter series was better as a string of movies, again, in my opinion, than as books.  Since I straddle both worlds, film and books, and know how easy it is for great ideas to get lost in the shuffle of "helpful" Hollywood Executives, I understand how important it is to find the best screenwriter to adapt that particular book.  Not all screenwriters are alike, and some will adapt certain books better than others.  And then it's up to the Studio to green light a final rewrite -- and then a final edit -- that's as true to the source material as possible, assuming they're familiar with the source material.  You'd be shocked how few Studio execs actually read the books they're making into films.  They live in a world of scripts.  That's the language they understand.Your favorite food is?Yikes!  How do I answer this?  I kind of love everything.  I'm one of those people who'll try anything once and will often enjoy the most bizarre dish on the menu.  But, to answer your question, how wrong can you go with a fantastic burrito?  Or an amazing slice of key lime pie?  Or chocolate?  See?  It's impossible for me to choose.  ;-)  When I'm locked in Writing World, I do tend to focus on simple meat/rice/vegetable dinners.  Can't go wrong with that.  Or pizza! Your favorite singer/group is?Another tough one.  I don't have a favorite singer/group per se.  What I do enjoy doing -- since I tend to write to remixes of songs and not the original song itself -- is scour YouTube for remixes of popular songs done by DJs people haven't heard of yet.  Seriously.  There's a ton of untapped, unknown remixing talent out there.Your favorite color is?Anything bright.  Or maybe brown.  Blue?  Red?  Wow, I really gotta get answers for easy questions like this!Your favorite Author is?I enjoy the storytelling prowess of Anne Rice and the "effortless" writing style of Stephen King (although he's an amazing storyteller as well) and I love, love, love how Allison Weir recreates history into something vibrant and exciting.  So, that's three authors when you only asked for one.  Consider the extra two on the list bonuses.  :)remember to check out today’s spotlight to find out more about Martuk The Unholy.
