A to Z Challenge – Letter M

Here is a rare cover of mine with no woman or girl in the image but a man. A male elf anyway. But my word for the letter M is not a man or a male. It is the MOON.

I have several covers that use the words starting with the L. I couldn’t choose just one. Here are two covers. One is obvious – a LIBRARY.

The letter K begins one of my favorite words – a KEY.

The J is not a much-used letter to start a word. A small dictionary might use only a couple of pages for this letter. I went with a JUNGLE.

The letter I wasn’t easy for me, but eventually, I went with the word ISLAND. A floating island, to be precise, because, of course, there are floating islands in speculative fiction.

For the letter G, many interesting speculative fiction words were available. There are gnomes and goblins and grimoires. But I chose a GOBLET of magic.

IWSG – Thinking sideways + A to Z challenge – Letter F

It’s the first Wednesday of the month again, time for a post for the Insecure Writer’s Support Group.

APRIL QUESTION: Are you a risk-taker when writing? Do you try something radically different in style/POV/etc. or add controversial topics to your work?

MY ANSWER: Not really. I don’t experiment with style and don’t intentionally introduce controversial topics to my fiction, but more often than not, I write about something I feel strongly about, and it touches people’s heartstrings. Sometimes in a good way. Other times, not so much. I never plan to antagonize anyone, but I guess it is inevitable with any personal opinion, however benign.

The explanation for my frequent ‘coming contrary to the common mold’ way of thinking probably lies in my upbringing. I grew up in Soviet Russia, with socialism and communism and all the rest of that garbage as the main state’s policies. So I often think sideways to most of the western population. It could be quite irritating, but what can I do about it?

Even in this group, I feel like an odd woman out. Welcome but different. Most participants in IWSG of my age and sex write romance or general fiction. Or non-fiction. I write almost exclusively speculative fiction: fantasy and sci-fi.

Now, I’ll segue to my A-to-Z post for today. I not only write speculative fiction. I create pre-made book covers for the genre. Today is the day for the letter F. My entry for this letter consists of two covers. I couldn’t decide which one I liked better, so I included both. One cover highlights a FUTURISTIC urban landscape.

Wouldn’t you want to live in that city?

Another cover is pure fantasy for the word FAIRY.

The letter D for a fantasy writer almost invariably brings to mind the fantasy most formidable creatures – DRAGONS. Below are my two takes on dragons. I couldn’t settle on just one cover – I have so many with dragons.

And here is the second one. For some reason, both covers feature the blue palette.
