The distress of giving

On Sant Jordi (Saint George’s day), the international day of the book, I decided to hit the streets of Barcelona, giving away short stories in order to promote my book — the short story collection 999 Abroad. A priori, the plan sounded fun and easy. How hard could it be to walk around and give away stories? The execution did indeed turn out to be fun, but it was far from being as easy as I had imagined.

In the weeks leading up to Sant Jordi I prepared two A6 formatted flyers — one in English a...

Um breytingar

Á framtíðar brautina beinu,

berumst í vetfangi einu.

Byltum öllu.

Bætum völlu.

En breytum samt helst ekki neinu.

Gunna frá Limerick

Gekk ég með Gunnu frá Limerick,

uns gerðist hún við mig of-frek.

Hefndi mín um síð,

henni orti níð.

Gekk ég frá Gunnu með hlymrek.

Málvísi

Ung læra börnin orð að segja,

eldri þau nema sagnir að beygja.

Unglingar fræðast um framfærslu á málum,

fullorðnir hella úr visku sinnar skálum.

Æ hvað ég vild’að fólk gæti svo lært að þegja.

Ævintýra-Þráinn

Lagði hann lífið að veði,

leitandi hinnar sönnu gleði,

gekk á báða pólana,

heimsins hæstu hólana,

uns hann fann’ana heima í blómabeði.

Incredible coincidence or probable affair

On a recent trip to Chile I was standing in line at Santiago airport, waiting to be checked in for my flight to the Colombian capital Bogotá, when a person behind me in the line addressed me.

“Do you speak Spanish?” she asked (in Spanish).

“Yes,” I replied (in Spanish).

“I remember you from the festival,” she continued.

“Festival?” I asked as if I had been to more than one festival during my short stay in Santiago.

“Yes, the festival on Friday!”

“Ah yes, the Colombian festival.”

“I remember you from...

Hello World … :-)

When I was in Iceland this summer, I had a very pleasant experience. I was walking to the local swimming pool when I passed an old woman on the sidewalk who greeted me and wished me a good day.

I thought it was very a cute and hospitable act. I wondered that being greeted on the street by a complete stranger could only happen in Iceland or other small communities.

Today I took a stroll in Parque do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. A park worker was driving his car around the park, emptying tra...

999 Abroad

999 Abroad is a collection of short fiction stories by Börkur Sigurbjörnsson. Most of the stories are based on real events in the life of an Icelander living abroad. Although the stories contain a grain of truth, they are mostly fiction. The title of the collection comes from the Icelandic Registry and refers to the values of postal-code and city used for Icelandic citizens living abroad. The stories are illustrated by Yana Volkovich.

999 Erlendis

Hægt er að kaupa 999 Erlendis sem rafbók á Emma.is. Þar fæst eintak fyrir flestar gerðir rafbókar...
