#MostWantedMonday – Heated by J. Kenner
The party was still going strong when I stepped back into the room. That made sense, I supposed, considering I’d been away less than half an hour. But in that time the world had shifted, and it seemed anticlimactic to go back into the room and have everything be exactly the same.
Then I saw Tyler across the restaurant, saw him looking at me. Saw the heat in his eyes.
No, I thought. Nothing is the same at all.
I considered playing it coy, but I wasn’t certain he’d stand for it. More, I didn’t want to. He’d lobbed the ball soundly into my court. Now it was my turn to return it.
I’d checked my purse with the attendant hired to work the party, so I borrowed a pen from the bartender, then scribbled a note on a napkin. I folded it, then called over one of the waitresses and gave it to her. “Just make sure he’s the one who gets it,” I said, pointing to Tyler.
She flashed a conspiratorial grin. “You got it. Good luck.”
“Passing notes in class?” Kat asked, walking up as the waitress walked away.
“Something like that.”
“Buy you another glass of wine?” she asked, holding up two fingers to the bartender.
“They’re free,” I said.
“Don’t let that discount my generosity.” She took the glasses from the bartender and passed one to me. “To success,” she said, then held up her glass to clink.
“Success? In what?”
“In whatever the hell that was all about,” she said, nodding toward the waitress, who had just reached Tyler.
I watched as he took the note, unfolded it, and then—very slowly—lifted his eyes to mine. Come here, he mouthed, and the command seemed to fill me up, warm and enticing.
“Well,” Kat said, a lilt to her voice. “How very interesting.”
I barely heard her. I was already on my way across the room.

I took the stairs three at a time and found Allie standing in the middle of my ransacked room. Every single piece of luggage had been opened. Every single item of clothing had been tossed out. Drawers hung open and empty. The mattress lay askew, most of its bulk now held up by the floor.
I didn’t say anything. I didn’t even curse. Because what the hell was there to say?
“I don’t think they even took anything,” Allie whispered. She thrust her hand toward me and I saw the camera, the brand new Nikon that Eric had bought for her. Definitely not the kind of thing your average thief would pass up.
“It was on the floor, just right there on the floor,” Allie said. “Like they couldn’t care less.”
I was certain she was right—demons aren’t big on scrapbooking and they rarely have Facebook pages.
From behind us, Mrs. Micari drew in a sharp breath. I whipped around to face her. “What the hell did you do?”
Her hand flew to her chest. “Katherine, no!”

Dear god I want him to touch me. I’ve slept with a lot of guys, but right now, I don’t think I’ve ever been more desperate for a man’s touch.
I think about The Plan. I think about my loophole.
I think about the fact that the loophole calls for him to make a move on me.

“All right,” I say as I quash those damn nerves, then fist my hand in his shirt and move in close. He smells like musk and desire and I breathe deep, letting the scent of him fill me, warm me. We’re not even inches apart, and the air between us seems to shimmer, thick with passion.
I press my other hand to his thigh and stroke slowly up, up, up, until I brush against the hard length of his erection. My thighs quiver, and my sex tightens with need. I’m aware of every inch of my body, as if I’m a live wire, sparking and popping.

How cool is this?

I’m super-psyched that we’re counting down the the release in just a few weeks of PAX DEMONICA, the next book in my Demon Hunting Soccer Mom series!
Here’s a sneak peek at some action for you:
Dammit, dammit, dammit! I’d known there were demons on the prowl, and yet I’d so desperately wanted a demon-free vacation that I’d called on toddler logic and pretended that if I just looked the other way it would all go bye-bye. There’s a lesson there. Something about never ignoring the sign of a demon, because if you do it will surely come back to bite you on the ass.
At the moment, my ass felt well and truly chewed.
I used my free hand to slam my fist soundly into his nose. “What?” I repeated. “What do you think I have?”
“You know,” he snarled, and then he hocked back and spat on me. So help me, I flinched. Me, the woman who’s changed countless dirty diapers and nursed children through all forms of stomach flu. I faltered in the face of phlegm. And the demon took advantage of my weakness, wrenching his body to the side and forcing himself out of my grasp.
“Oh no you don’t,” I said, grappling for him, but he was small and wiry and fast. He scuttled backward like a crab, then hopped to his feet.
“It will be ours,” he said. “The door will be opened.”
And then the little fiend turned and ran down the alley away from me. I started after him, but was halted by the sound of pounding feet behind me, coupled with Stuart’s worried voice, now echoing down the alley. “Kate? Oh, shit, Kate! What happened!”
He was at my side in seconds, holding my arm to steady me, then bending down to pick up Allie’s backpack, which the little demon had dropped. At least I’d managed to accomplish that much.
“Are you okay?” He looked into my eyes. “Was it—“
“Gypsy,” I said. “Snagged Allie’s pack.”
“Jesus, Kate. You should have just let him take it. What if he’d had a knife?”
“Force of habit,” I said dryly. I rubbed the sore spot on my head as we walked back to the front of the B&B. “And all he had was a fist.”
“So it wasn’t a—a demon?” His voice dropped so far it was barely audible.
I shook my head, the lie coming too easily. “A kid,” I said. I told myself it was just jet-lag and hunger. I’d tell him the truth later, after we all were rested. But honestly? I think I was lying to myself, too.
PAX DEMONICA is my first indie “front list” title (as in, it’s an entirely new book, not backlist) that I’m releasing entirely on my own. (Tame Me is an indie book, but it’s being released in conjunction with a marketing company, and that’s why I’ve been able to get pre-order links to fans!). Because PAX is completely indie, I don’t have pre-order links, but it will be available at Amazon (in print and as an ebook) and also for Nook, iBooks, and Kobo! Stay tuned!
