When we finally reached the part of Chicago I recognized—down by the Magnificent Mile—I tucked my phone away and frowned at the scenery. “We’re going the wrong direction,” I said.
Tyler put his phone down and followed my gaze. “No,” he said. “We’re not.”
“This is the way to Pilson?” I asked, mentioning my neighborhood.
“It’s one way,” he said. “But we’re not going to your apartment.”

Amused, I leaned back. “So where are we going?” I asked, but I didn’t really need to. Red was already maneuvering the Lexus in front of the Drake.
“What if I just want to go home,” I asked, as he opened the door for me.
“I’d say no.”
“Oh.” I considered that. Considered my very visceral reaction to his words. We’d thrown each other off-kilter at Destiny. But now … now Tyler was most definitely the one in control.

The evening sun outside the window cast an orange glow over the inside of Nick’s SoHo loft, setting the bed on fire even more than the three women already there, their bodies slick and willing atop the satin sheets. Nick stood naked at the foot of the bed, paintbrush in hand, the canvas in front of him a perfect reflection of the hedonistic revelry of the women who now cooed and called to him, urging him to abandon his work as the day abandoned its light.
Not an unpleasant proposition, all things considered, and he felt himself harden in response to the women’s call. Soon he would take his pleasure, make no mistake. But first, he wanted to take a bit more from these women. Just a spark, just a glint. Just the tiniest morsel to flesh out their portrait and make the work come alive.
Almost reverentially, he dipped his brush into the paint, then dabbed at the canvas, which now came alive as the brilliant hues of the sun’s glow shimmered on the women’s oil-paint skin. In front of him, the women cuddled and giggled, tasting and suckling and urging him to join them.
But Nick was lost in his art, lost in the light. He’d always loved this time of day, an expression of his artist’s heart, he supposed. Or, perhaps the fiery glow simply reminded him of home.
He stroked the canvas, urging his brush to exalt the women. To lift them up and make them more than they were in life. He pushed and urged, teasing out the colors, the subtle shades, the very heart of the portrait as he struggled to lift it toward an almost celestial perfection.
By anyone else’s standard, the portrait would be considered perfect. Another Nicholas Velnias masterpiece. And yet Nick knew that it was flawed. That the depth of emotion—of beauty and passion—had yet to be plumbed.
He had yet to find her. A woman so beautiful that she could awe even his jaded heart.
Someday, he thought. Someday, his brush would grace her form…

Moms and daughters and demons … #SoccerMomSunday counting down to Pax Demonica!

“And he’s dead.” She left the sentence hanging, dangling like bait on a hook. I didn’t nibble. After a moment, she let out an exasperated breath. “If you didn’t kill him, then who did? And what was a demon doing on our flight? I mean, that’s weird, right?”
“They have to get around somehow,” I said dryly. In truth, I was proud of her. She was asking all the right questions, and she deserved to know as much as I did—even though I knew exactly squat.
Except I didn’t want to tell her. Not about the altar. Not about the call from her dad. My heart might be bursting with pride from how capable and grown-up my daughter was becoming, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t still completely twisted up inside. Grappling with her desire to step into this life. And grappling with my willingness to let her do it. Weren’t parents supposed to protect their kids? The skills she was developing made her stronger, sure, but they also meant that danger would come her way. More, it meant that she’d seek it out.
And, dammit, this wasn’t the place I wanted her doing that. I wanted this trip to be about family—not about the family business.
But that was just me making excuses. There was danger out there whether she sought it out or not. It was there whether she trained or not. For better or for worse, this life was in her blood, and I owed my almost-adult daughter the respect of telling her what I knew. And what I suspected.
She sat stiff and silent beside me on the bed, scowling and undoubtedly certain that I was going to blow her off.
Once again, I stood. “Come on.” I bent down and carefully scooped Timmy into my arms. He stirred but didn’t wake, and I said a silent thank you to the patron saint of overwhelmed mommies.
“Where?” Allie asked. “Are we getting Stuart?” I heard both wariness and defiance in her voice. If I said yes, my daughter was going to put up a fight.
“No,” I said. “We’re leaving Timmy with his dad. Then you and I are going to take a walk. We’ll leave Stuart a note telling him we decided to get a head start on shopping.”
“But we’re really …?”
“Shopping may be involved,” I admitted. “Mostly we’re going to talk.” I was even considering heading on to Forza so that I could run through everything with Father Corletti before bringing Stuart by to take the official tour.
And, yes, I felt guilty about that. Probably not as guilty as I should. Lies and secrets were becoming second nature to me. Not a good thing, but there you go.
Allie’s grin lit up her eyes. “I want some shirts and jeans, but mostly I want a jacket. Italy’s all about the leather. Oh, and I told Mindy I’d find a purse for her. Something really exceptional, you know?”
I didn’t bother answering, just moved slowly out the door with my bundle of toddler in my arms and my teenager in my wake. Two minutes ago, she’d been all about the demons and the mysteries. Now it was shopping and fashion and soft leather accessories.
I could only imagine what the next minutes would bring.

More Damien Stark, More Nikki … and a whole new hero and heroine! It’s a #StarkOnSaturday announcement!
I’m thrilled to announce that readers will be seeing more of Nikki and Damien … not to mention a hot new hero and a fabulous new heroine!
Thanks so much to everyone who saw the news in Publishers Marketplace and emailed or tweeted congrats! I’m thrilled that I can now share the news that’s been brewing!
Let me bring you all up to speed:
As you guys know, I absolutely love writing Nikki and Damien (and it goes without saying that I love how much readers enjoy reading their stories!). They’ve earned (and deserve) their happily ever after that they got in Complete Me and the Take Me epilogue novella. But that doesn’t mean I wanted to simply walk away from them.
So that’s where the novellas that I’m calling Stark Ever After come in. So far, I have two planned, and they’ll both be published by Bantam Books, the awesome publisher of the Stark Trilogy. No titles yet, but I can tell you that the first novella is planned to be released this coming October, and that it centers around Nikki and Damien’s honeymoon. (As an aside, you’ll also get to see Nikki and Damien in the upcoming IGNITED, Most Wanted book 3.)
The next novella is currently planned for February 2015, and centers around drama in Nikki and Damien’s life … but what is even more cool is that in that novella you’ll get to meet the all-new hero of the upcoming, super-sensual spin-off trilogy of full-length novels set in the exciting, glamorous world of Stark International. (No details on him yet…other than to say that he is absolutely yummy, and very, very hot!). (And, yes, because these books take place in the world of Damien Stark, you’ll get to catch up with Nikki and Damien in those books as well!)

Lila fidgeted on her stool, unnerved by how much she’d revealed to this man. He probably thought she was an idiot, the way she’d blathered on and on. There was something about him, though. Something that drew her in and, apparently, affected her as potently as a few strong drinks.
Lord knew, he loosened her tongue. Not to mention that his mere proximity left her feeling warm and decadent. Itchy, even, but in a wholly sensual way. Like she might die if he didn’t scratch the itch… and she might melt if he did.
“So will you?” she asked, shaking off the languor in her bones. “Will you sketch me now?”
He leaned back, his silver-gray eyes examining her with an almost feral intensity as he looked her up, then down. She tried to sit still, but couldn’t quite manage. The heat of his gaze was so intense it might have been a caress, and her nipples peaked under his scrutiny, raising hard nubs under the soft Lycra of her top. Instinctively, she started to cross her arms over her chest, but fought the urge, keeping them at her sides, and feeling more exposed—and more turned on—than she ever had in her life.
His inspection finished, he met her eyes, the corner of his mouth curving up into a silent smile. He turned away, saying nothing, then took a quick sip of his scotch. He reached for two cocktail napkins, pulled them close, then patted his mouth with one.
Honestly, she wanted to scream. “Well?” she demanded, forcing her voice to remain calm and steady.
“Of course I’ll sketch you,” he said. He met her eyes, and a muscle twitched in his jaw. “In fact, at the moment I can think of only one thing I’d like to do more.”
“Oh.” She knew she shouldn’t ask, but she couldn’t help herself. “What’s that?”
One beat, then another. Her heart pounded in her chest, the rhythm so intense she was certain everyone in the bar could hear it.
And then, just when she was certain he wasn’t going to answer, he traced the curve of her cheekbone with his thumb, then leaned close. She closed her eyes as his lips brushed her hair, and his voice was a whisper against her ear, sending shivers trilling down her spine. “The only thing I want more than to sketch you,” he murmured, “is to paint you.”
Lila exhaled, her eyes still closed, her body burning from the remnants of his breath caressing her skin. That hadn’t been the response she’d expected. But somehow his words were all the more erotic, holding a promise of things more decadent and revealing than mere sex.
“Shall I?” he asked.
And then, opening her eyes to look at him, she nodded.
He grinned and reached into the inside pocket of his jacket to produce a stick of charcoal.
She lifted an eyebrow and he shrugged. “Accountants carry calculators,” he said. “It’s not that surprising.”
“Do you have a pad in there, too?”
He drew the napkin closer. “No need. Now sit quietly,” he directed. “And watch me.”
He cupped her face, tilting her head just slightly, then urged her hand up until she found herself resting her chin on her fist, watching him from this posed position. And watching the image of herself come to life on the tiny cocktail napkin.
He started with a sweep of the charcoal. One line that seemed to have no connection to her at all. No connection, that is, except for the smoldering way that he looked at her. A smoky gaze that seemed reflected in the smudged charcoal image emerging on the paper.
The curve of her jaw. Then the line of her neck. A flick of his wrist and the tendrils of her hair seemed to materialize from so many lines on the paper. And then, most miraculously of all, he caught the expression in her eyes. And, seeing that, she knew that he could never doubt that she’d agree to be painted. Because her expression was rapturous. And she knew the truth of what he’d sketched. Because with every piercing look—with every sure stroke of the charcoal—Lila realized that she couldn’t walk away without letting him paint her. His scrutiny made her feel both alive and unique. And even if she never did another bit of modeling, the portrait he’d create would fulfill her fantasies. More, Nicholas Velnias would be giving her the chance at immortality. And, really, what girl could say no to that?
