Well said: “It seemed everybody knew someone who knew someone there. It affected the world. We all became New Yorkers on that day.”

A peek into my new poem book VERSIFY

World Of Darkness

My world is dark around me,

Not a ray of sun is found,

I depend on other senses,

Like touch and smell and sound.

Please! Don’t feel sorry for me,

That’s not the thing to do,

Except that I am blind,

I’m just the same as you.

I can hear the birds that sing,

As they flutter through the air,

I can touch the gentle petals,

Of the flowers growing there.

I cannot see the colors,

That make a rainbow grand,

But I hear the whisper of the wind,

And feel the grass growing on the ground

•.

I can tell you by your footsteps,

Feel your presence when you’re near,

Identify you by your voice,

And I’ve been known to shed a tear.

Poor soul, how he must suffer,

I hear some people say,

But they close their eyes to justice,

So I’d rather be this way.

Now that’s marketing!

Two days ago I was very ill and had to be taken to the urgent care for treatment. This posting is not about how ill I was but what I was able to accomplish, This is by the way quite different. On the way to urgent care to the hospital in the ambulance the female attendant was asking about me. I told her I was a first time self published author. She asked all about it and how she could get my book. she said she would like an autographed copy. I told her I had signed copies the the Coles book store at the Brantford mall. She said she lived very close to the mall and would pick one up that very night.
Then the ER Dr that took care of me, had done so before and knew me.She asked me about some of the things happening in my life. I told her about my book and she wanted a signed copy. I told her I carried some in my van and my hubby would be here to get me and when he did he would bring me one to sign..She was very pleased.
The great thing is our hospital is smaller and the word will spread especially if the Dr, has it. How cool is this.
On another note I am on the mend thanks to that amazing ER Dr.

My latest published story

For the love of a sister

In my fifty years of hairdressing, there have been many, many changes and an immense development of improved products, but there is one thing that I think will never change. That is man’s love for a woman with long flowing locks. Now it is easy for us as hairdressers to add length, almost any length to our client’s hair with the use of extensions. It is amazing when you think of it. We can make ourselves taller with heals, slimmer with spandex and sexier with extensions.

I could have used them the day Missy came in for a haircut. It was your average warm summer day. Being a Tuesday we were not overly busy and she was a walk in. In fact, she was our first customer of the day. Specializing in long hair, I was in my glory to see her sitting in my chair. Her hair in soft curls flowed a foot past the bottom on my chair. I would have to pump my chair up as high as it could go just to keep it off the floor.

There were a dozen styles happily running through my head. What would I do? What would I do?

With excitement I greeted her,” Good morning I am Chris. What may I do for you to day?”

“Cut it please,” she said.

“How much?” I asked, holding up my fingers to indicate a couple inches. “Just to make it even?”

With a catch in her throat she said.” No cut it short, really, really short.”

My heart fell. I so wanted to do my magic on this beautiful mane. My fingers stroking the silk strands as they flowed through my fingers. “Are you sure, you hair is so long and so beautiful?”

“You sound just like my husband he was almost in tears this morning when I told him I was coming to do this.” She sighed as she continued, “I feel bad for him but he has had several years to play with and enjoy my long hair.”

“May I ask why you are cutting it?”

“Well you see my twin sister has always been jealous of my long hair and the fact it has been this way for most of my life. She has not had the patience to go through the different annoying stages to get it like this. I am the kind of person who could be happy watching paint dry.” We both laughed I had never heard that before.

Once again, I asked, “Why are you cutting it then?”

Before she answered, she held her index finger up motioning me to wait a moment. She then reached into her oversized purse and took out a rather large plastic bag, which she laid on my station. On it was a sticker that read Cancer Society wig material.

She did not have to say another word. We shared silent tears as I carefully and lovingly cut her hair placing it gently in the plastic bag that one day would bring a little dignity to her sister.

When her husband came and picked her up you could see the shock seeing his short haired Missy but also the pride in his eyes. I hugged Missy as I crumpled her bill and placed it in the garbage. Missy showed her sister her love one strand at a time. And I learned a valuable lesson about unconditional love.

Guest author Christine Hannon has been a professional hairdresser for 50 of her 67 years. At sixteen, she started her career that included hairdressing, makeup artistry and modeling. Then suddenly at the age of twenty three her life was immeasurably changed due to a drunk driver. Her career as she knew and loved it was changed forever. Working in a salon until it was no longer physically possible she then worked from home. Her book A Hairdresser’s Diary shares many amazing stories on her journey. Her blog will give you much insight into her incredible life.

Being an author can have its challenges, but it can also reap great rewards. I’m not talking about that big cheque that finally makes it to our mail box, I’m talking about the people we meet along the way who become our encouragement and our life support.

Today I was featured on Chuck Douros’s blog as a guest author on…

A moment from my book

Gail was another matter; she was overly well endowed and always wore tops that almost covered something. She would bounce in and make sure she visited every one of the guys. Her skirts were far too short and no one taught her how to sit like a lady. You could hear and feel the stampede, as the guys came running up the stairs from the lunchroom in the basement. No one wanted to miss the free show. Gail was the newest addition to the ‘men’s only club’ down town and I guess she was advertising. It was a joke around the shop, that at least the guys here didn’t have to pay admission to the show, the show came to them. She was Salvador’s customer and refused to have a shampoo cape put over her, she settled for just a towel around her neck. We could see how hard this was on him, especially when he had to brush the fresh cut hair off her bosoms. This was always the longest drawn out hairdo he ever did. Flirtatiously she said, “It has to be perfect Salvador.”

We used a crochet hook for pulling the hair through the little itty-bitty holes in the streaking cap; it was as if we were digging for brains. Alternatively, as one lady put it like we were trying to scratch her nose from the inside. If not done correctly it could feel like torture.

We had Baby Jane (an older lady who had emotional problems) who came in once a month to have her hair tinted as black as we could make it. She would then go home and style it herself. She overly applied her makeup and dressed up to look exactly like Betty Davis in ‘Whatever Happened To Baby Jane.’ Her sister would come into the shop weekly and she would tell us the story about how her sister became so eccentric. When she was younger, she was in a skating accident and was in a coma for almost 6 months. She recovered but somehow became obsessed with the character Baby Jane. Everyone who knew her loved her and understood. One day at the mall, I watched as she entertained some enthusiastic onlookers and played the part as if she were living it. I too then understood what her disability was doing to her. Being entertaining made her happy.

I have been visitng some of the most awesome, delightful and interesting people a nd all via blogging. I feel so dumb as these new friends are so professional at this. I will not use the excuse that I am new to this although it is true because that is a lame excuse. There is so much to learn and each time I am challanged I learn more. I do appologise when I do not do it right or it takes me twice as long. I could use the BLONDE excuse but my hair is white and I don’t think that counts lol.

I cannot express the way I feel about my new friends accept amazing, supportive, warm and accepting. Thank you to all of you who have come into my life and who have accepted me into theirs. What a pleasure it is.
